Restart MySQL once and let InnoDB complete its built-in crash recovery. After an unexpected exit, InnoDB reads the redo logs, rolls committed work forward, and rolls back transactions that were still uncommitted. Do not delete ibdata1, *.ibd, or redo-log files before understanding the error log; those files may contain the evidence needed to recover the instance.
If a normal restart cannot complete, preserve the error log and data directory, then choose between restoring a known-good backup with binary logs or starting a copy with the lowest innodb_force_recovery level that permits a logical dump. Forced recovery is a data-extraction measure, not a repair command.
What to do first
Take these actions in order. They minimize the chance of turning a recoverable crash into permanent data loss.
- Stop repeated restart loops. Leave enough time to capture one complete failed startup, and prevent an automated service manager from constantly rewriting the error log.
- Protect the evidence. Identify the configured data directory, preserve the complete error log, and make a byte-for-byte copy or storage snapshot before changing files if corruption or I/O errors are reported.
- Check the environment. Confirm that the filesystem is mounted, the server can read and write its data directory, free disk space is available, and the service is using the directory you are inspecting.
- Try one normal start. Use the operating system’s usual MySQL service command. On Windows, running
mysqld --consolecan display startup diagnostics directly. - Classify the result from the log. Ordinary crash recovery should be allowed to finish. Missing tablespaces, redo-log mismatches, corruption, or storage errors require a backup or controlled salvage plan instead.
Why a restart normally fixes an unexpected shutdown
InnoDB is designed to recover after a process crash, power loss, or forced shutdown. During startup it discovers the redo logs, reapplies changes that reached the log but not the data files, and then removes the effects of transactions that had not committed. This is why the official MySQL manual states: “To recover from an unexpected MySQL server exit, the only requirement is to restart the MySQL server.”

The same manual explains that “InnoDB automatically checks the logs and performs a roll-forward of the database to the present.” It also says that “InnoDB automatically rolls back uncommitted transactions that were present at the time of the crash.” These operations are automatic; manually deleting files is not part of normal crash recovery.
Why startup can appear frozen
Recovery work is usually visible in the error log rather than in a progress bar. A large redo backlog or a transaction that modified many rows can take a long time to roll back. The rollback can substantially outlast the original transaction because the server must undo each change safely. CPU, disk activity, and log messages may continue even when client connections are unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not interrupt a server that is clearly performing ordinary recovery merely because it has not accepted connections yet. Interrupting it repeatedly can extend recovery and make the diagnostic trail harder to interpret.
Read the error log before changing configuration
The complete startup log is the decision point. Capture the messages from the first failed attempt, including timestamps and the final error, rather than copying only the last line. Log location depends on the installation and operating system; use the configured error-log setting or the service definition to find it.
Messages consistent with normal recovery
- Statements that InnoDB is starting crash recovery or scanning redo logs.
- Progress through log application, page recovery, or transaction rollback without reports of missing files.
- A later message indicating that the server is ready for connections.
For this class of message, keep the instance running and allow recovery to finish. Avoid changing redo-log settings or moving files while the process is working.
Messages that indicate a different problem
- “Cannot open” or “missing tablespace” errors for an InnoDB system or user tablespace.
- Redo-log size, format, or checkpoint mismatches after files were moved, restored, or partially replaced.
- Page corruption, checksum failures, assertion failures, or repeated InnoDB errors on the same object.
- Input/output errors, read-only filesystem reports, device failures, or “out of space” messages.
- Permission or ownership errors showing that the service account cannot access the configured data directory.
These messages should stop an indiscriminate restart-and-delete cycle. First protect the data, then use a clean backup or a controlled extraction procedure.

| Observed condition | Preferred action | Objective |
|---|---|---|
| InnoDB reports ordinary crash recovery and continues making progress | Leave the normal startup running | Preserve normal transaction semantics and let automatic roll-forward and rollback complete |
| Startup fails with corruption, missing tablespaces, redo mismatch, or I/O errors | Stop changes, take a byte-for-byte copy or storage snapshot, and restore a known-good backup if available | Rebuild predictably without damaging the original evidence |
| No immediate clean restore is available, but the data directory can still be read | Use the lowest innodb_force_recovery value that starts a copy, then dump recoverable data |
Extract as much data as possible for a rebuild; do not treat the started server as repaired |
| Disk or filesystem is failing | Address the storage problem or move the protected copy to healthy storage before database work | Prevent additional unreadable pages and incomplete writes |
Step-by-step recovery procedure
1. Stop restart loops and record the state
Disable or pause automatic restarts long enough to inspect one complete startup attempt. Record the MySQL version, operating-system version, service name, configured data directory, and the time of the crash. Do not run cleanup jobs, table-repair utilities, or file moves against the only copy of the data.

If a supervisor immediately restarts the process, stop the service through that supervisor rather than killing individual processes repeatedly. The exact service label varies by platform; use the normal service-management interface for your installation.
2. Verify disk, filesystem, permissions, and datadir
Check the basics before interpreting an InnoDB message as corruption:
- Confirm that the volume containing the data directory is mounted and healthy.
- Check free space for the data volume and for the location where the error log, temporary files, and a recovery dump will be written.
- Verify that the MySQL service account owns or can access the data directory and its files.
- Confirm that the service configuration points to the same data directory you are inspecting. A restored copy or alternate installation can make the wrong directory look damaged.
- Look for operating-system or storage errors at the same timestamp as the MySQL failure.
Do not “fix” permissions by recursively changing every file until you know the intended service account and installation layout; an indiscriminate ownership change can create a second failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Attempt one ordinary startup
Start MySQL with the command normally used by your platform. On Windows, run the server in a console when appropriate:
mysqld --console
Keep the console output and the error-log file from that attempt. On systems using a service manager, watch the service status and the error log rather than launching a second server process against the same data directory.
4. Allow ordinary crash recovery to complete
If the log describes redo application and transaction rollback without a fatal storage error, wait. Do not remove redo files, change the data directory, or terminate the process solely because clients cannot connect immediately. A long-running transaction can require a long rollback, and restarting during that rollback can cause the sequence to begin again.
When the server eventually reports readiness, connect with an administrative client and check that expected databases and tables are present. Record the recovery messages and the time required; they are useful when investigating why the shutdown occurred.

5. Protect a failing instance before experimentation
If the log reports corruption, missing tablespaces, redo mismatch, or I/O failure, stop the server and create a byte-for-byte copy or storage snapshot. Keep the original unchanged and perform experiments on the copy. A filesystem-level copy must preserve the database files consistently; a storage snapshot is preferable when your platform can create one without modifying the source.
Also preserve binary logs, configuration files, and the error log. Binary logs may be required to bring a restored base backup forward to the desired point in time.
Restoring a backup and applying binary logs
A known-good physical backup is the most predictable path when the data directory is corrupt or the underlying storage has failed. Do not restore over the only copy of the damaged directory. Provision a clean MySQL instance on healthy storage, restore the base backup there, and validate it before directing applications to it.
Restore sequence
- Prepare a clean instance with a compatible MySQL version and sufficient storage.
- Restore the uncorrupted base backup according to the backup tool’s documented procedure.
- Start the restored instance and verify that its system tables, users, schemas, and expected row counts are sensible.
- Identify the binary-log files and positions or timestamps that cover the period after the base backup.
- Generate a SQL stream from the binary logs with
mysqlbinlog, then apply that stream to the restored server with themysqlclient. - Stop replay at the selected recovery point, validate application-critical data, and only then plan cutover.
A generic form of the replay pipeline is:
mysqlbinlog binlog.000001 binlog.000002 | mysql
The file names, connection options, credentials, and stopping position must match your backup and binlog retention plan. The command above is an illustration of the tools involved, not a substitute for selecting the correct start and stop coordinates.
Why point-in-time recovery matters
Restoring only the base backup returns the database to the time that backup was taken. Applying subsequent binary-log events can recover committed changes up to a chosen point before the crash or data-damaging event. If binary logs are missing, expired, or themselves damaged, the recoverable point may be older than expected.
Using innodb_force_recovery for salvage
Use innodb_force_recovery only when normal startup cannot bring the server up and a clean restore is not immediately available. Its purpose is to start the instance far enough to extract data, not to repair corrupted pages or make the original data directory trustworthy.
Prepare a copy and start at the lowest level
- Stop MySQL and work from the protected copy or snapshot, never the sole original.
- Add the setting under the server’s
[mysqld]section:
innodb_force_recovery=1
- Start the copy and inspect the error log. If it still cannot start, stop it and increase the value one level at a time.
- Use the lowest value that permits startup. Higher values disable more recovery behavior and increase the chance that extracted data is incomplete or inconsistent.
- Prevent application writes. The running copy exists for reads and extraction, not normal production traffic.
The exact level that works depends on the failure. There is no universal “correct” value, and reaching a running prompt does not prove that every table or row is sound.

Dump what can be read
Once the forced-recovery copy starts, use a logical backup tool to dump databases or individual tables that can be read. For example:
mysqldump --all-databases > salvage.sql
Run the dump in a location with enough free space and monitor its errors. If one table prevents a complete dump, extract unaffected databases or tables separately and document what could not be read. Preserve the original dump output and error messages.
Rebuild instead of continuing in forced mode
After extraction, create a fresh MySQL instance, import the logical dump, and validate it. Remove innodb_force_recovery from the rebuilt instance; leaving it enabled turns a temporary salvage setting into an unsafe operating mode. Treat the extracted data as potentially incomplete until row counts, constraints, application checks, and business-critical records have been reviewed.
Why deleting InnoDB files is dangerous
ibdata1
ibdata1 can contain the InnoDB system tablespace and metadata required to interpret tables and transactions. Deleting it can destroy information needed to open tables, even when individual .ibd files remain.
Individual .ibd files
A file in a file-per-table configuration is not a self-describing replacement for the table definition and tablespace metadata. Removing an .ibd file creates a missing-tablespace condition and can make an otherwise recoverable table inaccessible.
Redo logs
Redo logs record changes that must be applied during crash recovery. Deleting or replacing them can discard recovery evidence or create a checkpoint mismatch. A forum recipe that says to remove redo files may apply only to a narrowly documented rebuild scenario; it is not a safe response to an unknown crash.
If a file must eventually be replaced, make and verify a protected copy first, document the exact reason, and follow a procedure appropriate to the MySQL version and backup layout.

Choosing between recovery approaches
| Approach | Strength | Risk or limitation | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal restart | Uses InnoDB’s intended roll-forward and rollback semantics | May take a long time and cannot overcome missing files or failed storage | The log shows ordinary crash recovery |
| Physical backup restore | Fast, repeatable rebuild when the backup is known good | Requires a usable backup and compatible restore environment | Corruption, missing tablespaces, or disk failure is reported |
| Logical dump and rebuild | Extracts portable objects and avoids carrying damaged physical files forward | Can be slow; unreadable tables or rows will not appear in the dump | A forced-recovery copy can start and read enough data |
| In-place repair attempts | May appear to reduce downtime | Can destroy evidence, worsen corruption, and leave uncertain data | Only when a documented, version-specific procedure and verified backup justify it |
Validate before returning to production
A server that accepts connections is not automatically recovered. Validation should be explicit:
- Confirm that every expected schema and table is present.
- Compare critical row counts and selected aggregates with monitoring records, reports, or the latest backup.
- Review the error log for continuing InnoDB, checksum, or I/O warnings.
- Run application-level checks for orders, accounts, inventory, or other records where silent omissions would matter.
- Check users, privileges, scheduled events, and replication settings before cutover.
- Keep the damaged original and recovery artifacts until validation and retention requirements are complete.
For a point-in-time restore, record the exact binary-log endpoint used. For a logical salvage, record which databases, tables, and rows could not be dumped.

- Stop restart loops and preserve the first complete error log.
- Confirm free space, filesystem health, permissions, and the configured data directory.
- Attempt one normal start and wait if the log shows ordinary crash recovery.
- If the log shows corruption, missing tablespaces, redo mismatch, or I/O failure, stop and snapshot or copy the data directory.
- Restore a clean base backup to a new instance and replay binary logs when available.
- If no clean restore is ready, start a protected copy with the lowest
innodb_force_recoverylevel that works and dump readable data. - Rebuild on clean files, validate application data, and remove forced-recovery settings.
- Investigate the shutdown cause, verify backup and binlog retention, and rehearse the restore procedure.
