MySQL Error 2013 at “reading/waiting for initial communication packet” means the connection was dropped before authentication and session setup. Start by proving that the server is listening on the expected interface and port, then test TCP reachability from the client. Next verify that you are using the classic MySQL protocol on port 3306 (not X Protocol on 33060), check DNS and host-cache state, and only then increase connect_timeout if the server is reachable but slow to send its first packet.
The same error can be caused by a closed listener, firewall or security-group filtering, a wrong bind address, a protocol/port mismatch, failed name resolution, a blocked host, a broken proxy backend, or an unrealistically short timeout. The diagnostic order below separates those cases without changing more configuration than necessary.

MySQL Error 2013 is a lost-connection error. At the initial-handshake stage, the client has opened (or attempted to open) a connection, but the exchange of the server’s greeting packet and the client’s response did not complete. Normal username/password authentication, privilege checks and session initialization have not yet finished.
That timing matters. An authentication error normally identifies a bad account or password after the protocol is working. Error 2013 at “reading initial communication packet” or “waiting for initial communication packet” points first to transport, listener, protocol, name-resolution, host-cache or timeout conditions. MySQL’s guidance identifies network connectivity and an overly short connect_timeout as the principal starting points, and the Aborted_connects status counter shows whether the server is aborting initial attempts.

Do not treat every Error 2013 as the same fault. Record the complete message, including any operating-system error text, the client host, destination hostname or IP, port, protocol option and whether a proxy, tunnel or router is in the path. That information determines which branch below is relevant.
Use this diagnostic order
- Confirm that the intended MySQL instance is running and listening on the intended interface and port.
- From the client network, test basic TCP reachability to that exact host and port.
- Confirm that the client protocol matches the listener: classic MySQL on 3306, not X Protocol on 33060.
- Check forward/reverse DNS behavior and grant-table host values.
- Inspect the host cache for repeated handshake failures or a blocked client address.
- Only after reachability is proven, adjust
connect_timeoutfor a genuinely slow initial response. - Use the error log, optional general query log and status counters to verify the selected fix.
1. Verify the endpoint and MySQL listener
Confirm the service and instance
On the database host, verify that the intended mysqld process is running and that you are checking the same instance named in the application configuration. A healthy local command can still be testing a different socket or a different server than the failing application.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →sudo systemctl status mysql
sudo systemctl status mysqld
ps -ef | grep '[m]ysqld'
Use the service name that exists on your operating system; distributions commonly use either mysql or mysqld. If the service is stopped, read its startup error before attempting network changes.
Check the configured port and listening sockets
The conventional classic-protocol port is 3306. Check both MySQL’s configuration and the operating-system socket table:
mysql -NBe "SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'port'; SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'bind_address'; SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'skip_networking';"
ss -lntp | grep 3306
A listener on 127.0.0.1:3306 accepts loopback connections only. A listener on a private or public interface can accept remote TCP connections, subject to firewall policy. If skip_networking is enabled, MySQL accepts no TCP/IP connections at all; only local transports such as a Unix socket can work.
Check the effective configuration rather than relying on an assumed file location. Include any option files, container environment variables and command-line arguments used to start the server. If the server is in a container, a process listening on container port 3306 is not remotely reachable unless the host port is published and the network policy permits it.
Check every forwarding layer
For a managed service, virtual machine, container, SSH tunnel or database proxy, identify the actual endpoint the client reaches. Verify cloud security-group or network-policy rules, host firewall rules, container port mappings and tunnel forwards. A rule that allows a connection from one subnet but not the application subnet can make local tests misleading.

2. Test TCP reachability from the failing client
Run the test from the same machine, container, pod or network segment as the application. Substitute the exact hostname and port in use:
nc -vz -w5 DB_HOST 3306
telnet DB_HOST 3306
nc reports whether a TCP connect succeeds; telnet is an alternative where netcat is unavailable. These commands do not authenticate to MySQL, but they distinguish a basic path problem from a protocol or server-response problem.
- Connection refused: the destination is reachable, but no process is accepting that port, the service is bound elsewhere, or an active firewall is rejecting the attempt. Recheck
mysqld,port,bind_addressand port-forward rules. - Connection timed out: packets are commonly being filtered or routed incorrectly. Check host firewalls, security groups, network ACLs, VPN routes and the address returned by DNS.
- TCP succeeds but the MySQL client still reports Error 2013: investigate protocol/port pairing, DNS behavior during handshake, host-cache blocks, proxy backends and the initial timeout.
After a successful TCP check, test with the same protocol and endpoint as the application:
mysql --protocol=TCP -h DB_HOST -P 3306 -u USER -p
The explicit --protocol=TCP prevents a local socket from hiding a TCP failure. Keep the host, port and DNS name identical to the production connection string while testing.
3. Make sure the protocol and port match
Classic MySQL clients must connect to a classic-protocol listener. Port 3306 is the conventional classic port. Port 33060 is the default X Protocol port and is not interchangeable with 3306.
A classic mysql client pointed at 33060 can establish a TCP connection yet fail while reading the initial packet, producing Error 2013. The two protocols initialize connections differently, so an open port alone does not prove compatibility.
Correct the pairing
- For the traditional SQL client and classic connectors, use the server’s classic listener, normally
3306. - For an X Protocol client, use the X Protocol endpoint, normally
33060, and the corresponding client library or shell mode. - Check proxy or load-balancer listener definitions; a frontend port may forward to a backend using a different protocol.
Retest after changing only the port or protocol setting. Do not simultaneously change authentication, grants and timeout values, because that obscures which change resolved the handshake.

4. Check DNS and grant-table host matching
For non-localhost TCP clients, MySQL may perform reverse and forward DNS lookups during connection processing. Slow or broken DNS can delay or abort the handshake. Test name resolution from both the client and the database host:
getent hosts DB_HOST
nslookup DB_HOST
getent hosts CLIENT_IP
Use the resolver tools available on your operating system. Confirm that the hostname resolves to the intended database address and that reverse lookup of the client address is not returning stale or contradictory data. Repair DNS or add a deliberate hosts-file entry only when your network policy permits it.
Understand skip_name_resolve
Starting MySQL with skip_name_resolve disables DNS host-name lookups. This can avoid delays caused by an unreliable resolver, but it changes how grant-table Host values are matched: accounts must use IP addresses (or appropriate patterns), not DNS hostnames.
Before enabling it, inventory the relevant accounts:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
SELECT User, Host FROM mysql.user;
Convert or create the necessary IP-based grants using your normal account-management procedure, then restart or reload the server according to your deployment method. If you enable skip_name_resolve without adjusting grants, the handshake may progress farther but the application can receive a new access-denied failure.
5. Inspect and clear host-cache blocks
MySQL tracks connection errors by client address in the host cache. Repeated interrupted or malformed handshakes can raise the error count until a legitimate host is blocked. This is especially easy to trigger when an application repeatedly retries through a broken network path.
Query the host cache
With an account allowed to inspect Performance Schema, query the row for the client IP:

SELECT IP,

SUM_CONNECT_ERRORS,
COUNT_HOST_BLOCKED_ERRORS,
COUNT_NAMEINFO_TRANSIENT_ERRORS,
COUNT_NAMEINFO_PERMANENT_ERRORS
FROM performance_schema.host_cache
WHERE IP = 'CLIENT_IP';
High connection-error counters, failed name-information counters or a blocked-host counter indicate that the server has evidence about the client address. Correlate the timestamp and address with application logs; NAT can make several applications appear as one client IP.
Flush only after correcting the cause
An administrator can clear host-cache blocks with:
mysqladmin -h DB_HOST -P 3306 -u ADMIN -p flush-hosts
Use the documented SQL or administrative host-cache flush mechanism for your MySQL version if that is preferred. Flushing removes the block; it does not repair a firewall, DNS failure, wrong port or malformed client traffic. If the underlying problem remains, the counters will rise again.
The current MySQL reference documentation lists a default max_connect_errors value of 100. Raising that value can delay future blocking, but it is not a substitute for fixing connectivity. Change it only when you understand why legitimate clients are accumulating errors and have confirmed that the network path is sound.
6. Tune connect_timeout only for a reachable but slow server
connect_timeout controls how long the server waits for a connection packet from a client. On a long-distance or congested link, an extremely small value can cause the server to abandon an otherwise valid initial exchange. MySQL’s guidance suggests trying 10 seconds or more in that situation.
Check the current value
mysql -NBe "SHOW GLOBAL VARIABLES LIKE 'connect_timeout';"
If TCP reachability is reliable and logs show that the initial packet arrives too slowly, an administrator can test a temporary value:
SET GLOBAL connect_timeout = 10;
The exact value should reflect measured latency and connection behavior, not a large arbitrary number. A bigger timeout keeps server resources waiting longer for incomplete clients, so it can increase exposure to connection-exhaustion attacks or buggy retry storms.
Make a persistent change carefully
If the temporary test resolves the issue, place the chosen value in the server’s [mysqld] configuration for persistence, then restart or reload according to your operating procedure. Record the old value so it can be restored. Compare Aborted_connects and application connection-latency metrics before and after the change.

7. Use server evidence to select the fix
Status counters
Capture these values before and after each change:
SHOW GLOBAL STATUS LIKE 'Aborted_connects';
SHOW GLOBAL STATUS LIKE 'Connection_errors%';
Aborted_connects rises when the server aborts initial connection attempts. The Connection_errors_* family helps separate accept, internal, peer-address, select, TCP, max-connection and related categories, depending on the MySQL version. A falling error rate after one targeted change is stronger evidence than a successful single manual login.
Error and general query logs
Read the MySQL error log around the failure time. It may identify malformed packets, name-resolution problems, blocked hosts or timeout conditions. The general query log normally begins after a connection is established, so it may contain no entry for a failure that occurs before authentication; when enabled, it can nevertheless help show whether some attempts are reaching the server.
Recommended Free Tools
Correlate server timestamps with firewall, load-balancer, proxy, container and application logs. If a proxy accepts the client TCP connection but cannot reach its backend, the client can still see a handshake-stage Error 2013. Verify each hop separately: client to proxy, proxy to database, and database listener health.
Common situations and the correct branch
“It works with localhost but not from another machine”
A localhost test often uses a Unix socket rather than TCP. It can succeed even when remote TCP is disabled by bind_address=127.0.0.1, skip_networking, a host firewall or a cloud security rule. Repeat the local test with --protocol=TCP -h 127.0.0.1 -P 3306, then test the same port from the remote client. This isolates socket success from TCP success.
“The port is open, but the client still gets 2013”
Confirm that the open port is the classic listener expected by the client. A reachable 33060 X Protocol listener, a proxy frontend with an incompatible backend, or a service that accepts TCP and closes before sending a greeting can all produce this symptom. Inspect the process bound to the port and test the backend directly when a proxy is involved.
“The error started after many retries”
Inspect performance_schema.host_cache for the client address. A host-cache block may be the immediate cause, but repeated retries usually indicate an earlier network or protocol problem. Fix that cause, flush the host cache, then monitor Aborted_connects rather than simply raising max_connect_errors.
“Increasing the timeout did nothing”
A timeout change cannot open a closed port, correct a wrong bind address, bypass a firewall drop, translate X Protocol to classic protocol, or repair a proxy backend. Re-run the TCP test and listener checks; return to the earliest failed layer instead of increasing the value again.
Remedy comparison by failure layer
| Failure layer | Typical evidence | Remedy | Access required | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Service or listener | Refused TCP connection; no process on the expected port | Start the intended instance; correct port, bind_address or skip_networking |
Server administrator | Configuration change; reversible, but exposes a listener if bound too broadly |
| Firewall, route or security policy | TCP timeout or filtering from the client network | Allow the specific source, destination and port; repair routing or tunnel forwarding | Network or host administrator | Policy change; keep scope narrow and auditable |
| Protocol and port | TCP succeeds, but classic client fails immediately; port 33060 involved | Pair classic client with 3306 or use an X Protocol client with 33060 | Client or proxy administrator | Low-risk endpoint correction; no server setting required |
| DNS and grants | Slow lookups, name-resolution counters or host-name grants with disabled resolution | Repair DNS, use deliberate hosts-file entries, or enable skip_name_resolve after converting grants to IPs |
DNS and database administrator | Grant changes can remove access if incomplete; keep a rollback plan |
| Host-cache block | Host-cache error counters or blocked-host count for the client IP | Fix the repeated failure, then flush hosts; change max_connect_errors only with justification |
Database administrator | Flush is reversible; raising the threshold can hide abuse or faults |
| Initial timeout | Reliable TCP path, slow first packet and rising aborted handshakes | Increase connect_timeout modestly, test and monitor |
Database administrator | Reversible; larger values consume waiting resources |
Verification checklist after the change
- Run the TCP check from the application’s actual network location.
- Connect with the exact client protocol, hostname and port used in production.
- Confirm that the server’s listener and proxy backend show an established connection.
- Check
Aborted_connects, relevantConnection_errors_*counters and the host-cache row for the client address. - Review the error log for new handshake, DNS or blocked-host messages.
- Exercise the application’s normal connection pool and retry behavior, not just one interactive login.
- Document any changed firewall rule, grant, timeout or listener setting and retain the previous value for rollback.
What not to change first
- Do not begin by changing the password or authentication plugin; the failure occurs before normal authentication.
- Do not expose MySQL on every interface simply to make a test pass. Bind only to the required network and restrict source addresses with firewall policy.
- Do not point a classic client at 33060 because the port is reachable.
- Do not enable
skip_name_resolvewithout checking and converting hostname-based grants. - Do not rely on a higher
max_connect_errorsor a very large timeout to compensate for a broken path. - Do not use a successful
localhostsocket connection as proof that remote TCP works.
When to escalate
Escalate to the database or network administrator when you cannot inspect the listener, security policy, proxy backend, error log or Performance Schema. Provide the complete Error 2013 text, UTC timestamps, client source IP, resolved database address, destination port, protocol option, TCP test output, relevant status counters and the network path. That evidence lets the administrator distinguish a server-side abort from filtering between hops without repeating blind configuration changes.
