Start with mysql -u root -p and enter the password interactively. If that fails, determine whether the client sent no password or a rejected one, then check whether localhost is using a Unix socket while 127.0.0.1 is using TCP. MySQL error 1045 is an authentication failure for a specific user-and-host account; the right fix depends on the password, connection transport, option files, grant-table row, and server version.
What MySQL error 1045 actually means
A typical message is ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO). The server received a login attempt for the account name root from the host localhost, then rejected authentication. It is not a generic indication that the MySQL service is down; a stopped server normally produces a connection error instead.

using password: NO: the client sent no password. You may have omitted-p, used an option file that changed the command you thought you ran, or are connecting to an account designed for a different authentication method.using password: YES: the client sent a password, but it did not authenticate. The password may be wrong, expired, attached to a different account row, or being supplied by a stale option file.
The host is equally important. MySQL grants are matched using both User and Host. 'root'@'localhost', 'root'@'127.0.0.1', and 'root'@'server-name' are separate account rows unless a grant pattern deliberately matches more than one.

1. Retry with an explicit, interactive password
From a shell on the database host, run:
mysql -u root -pWhen prompted, type the password and press Enter. Nothing will be displayed while you type. Do not append the password directly, as in -pMyPassword; command lines can be exposed through shell history, process listings, or system diagnostics.

If the command succeeds, the original failure was an omitted or incorrect credential. If it returns using password: YES, continue with option-file and account checks rather than repeatedly guessing passwords. If it returns using password: NO, verify that you used the exact command above and that a wrapper script or alias is not replacing it.
2. Eliminate stale client option files
The MySQL client reads option files before processing many connection settings. A file can contain a legacy password, user, host, socket, or port value, so the command you see in your terminal may not describe the request actually sent to the server.
Run one clean test with:
mysql --no-defaults -u root -p--no-defaults suppresses option-file loading for that invocation. If this works while the ordinary command fails, inspect the client option files used by your operating system and remove or correct the obsolete setting. Check both user-level and system-wide files, and look for a [client] or [mysql] section that supplies credentials or changes the host.
Do not treat --no-defaults as a permanent repair if your installation relies on a required socket path or port. It is a diagnostic comparison. Restore the intended configuration after identifying the conflicting entry.

3. Check whether you are using a Unix socket or TCP
For a connection to localhost, MySQL programs normally attempt a local Unix-socket connection unless parameters force TCP/IP. A command using 127.0.0.1 uses TCP/IP instead:
mysql -u root -p -h localhost
mysql -u root -p -h 127.0.0.1These are not interchangeable tests. A root account authenticated through a socket-specific setup does not automatically authenticate a TCP client, and the server may match a different Host row for each request.
When localhost fails
If mysql -u root -p fails but the explicit TCP command succeeds, the password is probably valid and the socket path or the root@localhost account is the difference. Verify the socket location configured by the server and client. You can force a known socket when you have its path:
mysql --socket=/path/to/mysql.sock -u root -pReplace the path with the socket configured on your machine; do not copy a path from another installation.

When 127.0.0.1 fails
If the socket command succeeds but the TCP command fails, inspect the account row matching the TCP connection and the server’s TCP listener. Do not “fix” this by granting root access from every host. First determine whether you actually need TCP; local administrative work can usually use the socket.
4. Verify the matching User and Host rows
If another account with administrative privileges can connect, inspect the root entries:

FROM mysql.user
WHERE User = 'root';The result may contain several rows, such as root@localhost and root@127.0.0.1. Each row can have a different password, authentication plugin, and privilege set. Change the row that corresponds to the connection you intend to use, not an unrelated row.
MySQL’s host matching rules can include patterns, but a broad host grant is a security liability. In particular, changing the account to 'root'@'%' permits connections from any host that can reach the server. The wildcard can expose the most powerful account to networks you did not intend to trust. Prefer a local host row or a narrowly specified administrative host, and create a separate least-privilege account for applications.

Confirm the account definition before editing it
For a specific row, use:
SHOW CREATE USER 'root'@'localhost';Change localhost to the exact host shown by your failed login. This reveals the authentication plugin and account requirements without changing them. If you do not have permission to run these statements, log in with the installation’s designated administrative account or follow the password-recovery procedure below.
5. Reset a forgotten root password safely
If no known password works, use the official reset method for the installed MySQL release and platform. MySQL has changed authentication and service behavior across versions, so an old blog command can leave the server unsecured or fail to reset the row you actually use.
General recovery sequence on a Unix-like host
The following is the decision flow, not a substitute for the version-specific service instructions:
- Schedule a maintenance window and stop the normal MySQL service using the service manager for your operating system.
- Start the server temporarily with grant checking disabled and networking disabled, for example with the equivalent of
--skip-grant-tables --skip-networking. Restrict access to the local machine while it is running this way. - Connect locally without a password:
mysql -u root. - Reload the grant tables inside the session:
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;. - Assign a new credential to the correct account row. For a local socket account, for example:
ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'Use-a-long-unique-password'; - Exit, stop the temporary server, and start MySQL normally. Leaving grant checks disabled is an unauthenticated database exposure.
- Test the same transport you will use in production, such as
mysql -u root -pfor the local socket or an explicit TCP command for a TCP account.
The host in ALTER USER must match an existing row. If your inspection showed root@127.0.0.1 rather than root@localhost, alter that row instead. If the account uses an authentication method that does not accept a password, follow the release’s documented conversion procedure rather than forcing a plugin name from an older example.

Alternative init-file recovery
Some installations reset credentials by starting the server with a temporary initialization file containing an ALTER USER statement, then deleting that file and restarting normally. The file contains a secret and must be readable only by the database service account; remove it immediately after the reset. The exact startup option, quoting rules, service command, and file permissions differ on Windows, Linux, macOS, and packaged distributions, so use the instructions matching your installed version.
After a reset
- Test the account from the intended host and transport.
- Update applications, scheduled jobs, connection pools, and secret stores that used the old password.
- Search temporary scripts and logs for the old credential and remove exposed copies.
- Keep a separate administrative account or documented recovery path so a future reset does not require guesswork.
6. Correct an insecure initialization
If MySQL was initialized with mysqld --initialize-insecure, the root account can initially allow passwordless login. That is an installation state, not a safe operating mode. Set a strong password immediately, then verify that an unauthenticated command such as mysql -u root no longer succeeds.

Do not confuse this with a normal password failure. A server initialized securely may already have generated or assigned a root credential that must be supplied with mysql -u root -p.
7. Account for authentication-plugin changes by version
Authentication plugins are not constant across MySQL releases. MySQL 8.4 disables mysql_native_password by default, and MySQL 9.0 removes it. A client or connector that only supports that legacy plugin can therefore fail even when the typed password is correct.
Check the server version and the plugin shown by SHOW CREATE USER or the mysql.user query. Prefer upgrading the client, connector, or application to support the server’s current authentication method. Re-enabling a legacy plugin as a default is a compatibility workaround with security and maintenance consequences; do it only when the exact release documentation and a documented compatibility requirement justify it.

Security checks after you regain access
- Use a unique, long password for each administrative account and store it in an approved secret manager.
- Do not grant root from
%merely to make a connection work. - Use a dedicated application account with only the privileges the application needs.
- Remove temporary
--skip-grant-tablesprocesses and initialization files. - Review client option files for plaintext passwords and restrictive file permissions.
- Test both local socket and TCP behavior after upgrades, because a change in client defaults can select a different account row.
A short, safe checklist
- Read the complete 1045 message, including
using password: NOorYESand the host name. - Try
mysql -u root -p. - Try
mysql --no-defaults -u root -pif a hidden credential is suspected. - Compare
localhostand127.0.0.1deliberately; they use different connection paths. - With administrative access, inspect the exact
User/Hostrow and authentication plugin. - Reset only the matching row, using the procedure documented for your MySQL version and operating system.
- Remove insecure startup options, avoid wildcard root grants, and retest the intended client and transport.
