Random MySQL restarts on a small VPS are usually a resource or service-management problem, not a mysterious database failure. First correlate the restart time with both MySQL’s error log and the Linux kernel log. If the kernel records an out-of-memory (OOM) kill, reduce total memory demand or move to a larger VPS. If there is no OOM event, investigate repeatable queries, disk exhaustion, file-descriptor limits, InnoDB recovery errors, and service-manager constraints instead of blindly shrinking the buffer pool.

The safest fix is evidence-led: capture the failure, identify which resource was exhausted, change one major contributor, restart during a maintenance window, and watch the logs long enough to establish that the problem is actually gone.

Start by proving what “crash” means

A site outage that looks like a MySQL crash can have several causes. The mysqld process may have been killed, it may have exited after an internal error, or it may still be running while a client, health check, socket, network path, or service manager reports failure. Check the database process and its unit status at the same time.

Record the exact restart window

Write down the first failed request, the last successful request, and the time the service became available again, including the server’s timezone. A minute-level window is much more useful than “it restarted overnight.” If the VPS provider exposes host-level events, record those too, but do not treat a provider notification as a substitute for guest operating-system logs.

Check service state and recent events

systemctl status mysql
journalctl -u mysql --since '2026-10-15 10:00' --until '2026-10-15 10:15'
ps -o pid,etime,rss,vsz,cmd -C mysqld

Some distributions use a service name such as mysqld instead of mysql. A clean “active (running)” result after an outage does not prove that the server never died; it may have been restarted automatically. The unit journal, MySQL error log, and kernel journal must be compared by timestamp.

Correlate the MySQL and Linux logs

MySQL’s troubleshooting guidance is to examine the database error log and the system log, while also checking memory, disk space, and file descriptors. Find the error-log path in the active configuration or service definition, then inspect entries immediately before and after the restart.

Inspect the kernel for an OOM kill

free -h
swapon --show
df -h
journalctl -k -b | grep -i -E 'oom|out of memory|killed process'

On systems that keep a traditional log file, the same evidence may appear in /var/log/messages or a distribution-specific equivalent. Search the boot containing the incident; -b limits the query to the current boot, so inspect an earlier boot if the VPS restarted.

An OOM record commonly identifies the killed process and may show mysqld. Linux terminates a process in this situation with SIGKILL. MySQL cannot run normal shutdown handlers after SIGKILL, so the error log may end abruptly and the next startup may perform crash recovery. That abrupt ending is consistent with an OOM kill, but the kernel record is the decisive evidence.

Interpret the absence of an OOM record correctly

No matching OOM message does not prove that memory was sufficient. The event may be outside the selected boot, may have been logged by a different facility, or may have been a cgroup or service-manager limit. Check the unit’s resource controls and the VPS provider’s monitoring. Also look for explicit MySQL errors, assertion failures, stack traces, “too many open files,” “disk full,” or InnoDB recovery messages.

Understand MySQL’s memory footprint

innodb_buffer_pool_size is the largest obvious allocation on many InnoDB servers, but it is not the server’s complete memory budget. MySQL also allocates per-thread and feature-specific buffers, temporary-table memory, metadata, performance instrumentation, replication-related structures, connection state, and memory used by plugins. The total rises with concurrent activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a buffer-pool value from the whole VPS budget

MySQL’s default configuration is designed to let a server start on a virtual machine with approximately 512 MB of RAM. For a dedicated database host, documentation commonly describes a buffer pool around 50 to 75 percent of system memory. A low-memory VPS that also runs a web server, PHP or application workers, a control panel, monitoring agents, and scheduled jobs cannot safely apply the upper end without measuring those consumers.

Use this calculation rather than a universal percentage:

  1. Measure the VPS’s usable RAM during normal load and during the busiest expected period.
  2. Reserve memory for the operating system, filesystem cache, application workers, monitoring, and a safety margin.
  3. Give the remainder to MySQL’s buffer pool only after accounting for connection and temporary allocations.

For a 1 GB VPS, a cautious starting value might be in the 256–384 MB range when the machine also serves applications. That is an illustrative starting point, not a guarantee: a nearly dedicated database host with very few connections may sustain more, while a busy PHP stack may require less. Change the value in a maintenance window, then verify kernel and MySQL logs under representative load.

Do not multiply the buffer pool by connection count

The buffer pool is shared, but many other allocations are per connection or per operation. A high connection limit can therefore turn a seemingly reasonable buffer-pool setting into an OOM event when many sessions perform sorts, joins, temporary-table work, or replication tasks simultaneously. Record the active connection limit and temporary-table settings before tuning, and reduce concurrency or oversized per-session settings when they are the dominant contributors.

Lowering the buffer pool can reduce cache hit rates and increase disk reads. Lowering connection limits can make clients wait or fail fast. Lowering temporary-table thresholds can move work to disk and increase latency. Each change trades peak memory for throughput, latency, or disk activity, so change one major contributor at a time.

Check swap without mistaking it for RAM

swapon --show reveals whether swap is enabled and where it resides. Swap can prevent an immediate kill during a short allocation spike, but it does not add sustainable database capacity. Prolonged swapping can make queries extremely slow and increase disk pressure. Treat a nearly full or constantly active swap area as evidence that the VPS lacks headroom, not as proof that the memory problem is fixed.

Check for limits imposed by systemd or a container

The VPS may have more physical RAM than the MySQL service is allowed to consume. Inspect the unit and any drop-in override:

systemctl show mysql -p MemoryMax -p MemoryHigh -p TasksMax
systemctl cat mysql
systemctl status mysql

If a resource limit is configured, the effective value may be in a systemd drop-in rather than in my.cnf. MySQL documents that some limits belong in an override.conf file. Change such limits deliberately, verify that the hosting environment permits the change, and keep enough memory for every other service in the cgroup. In a container, inspect the container’s memory limit as well as the host’s total RAM.

Determine whether one query triggers the failure

Look at the final event in the MySQL error log before each restart. If the same statement, table operation, or client appears repeatedly, treat it as a query-isolation problem rather than a random crash.

Use controlled logging

  1. Choose a maintenance or test window and record the current logging configuration.
  2. Enable an appropriate query log only for the controlled reproduction. Broad logging on a tiny VPS can itself consume disk, CPU, and memory.
  3. Reproduce the workload with the smallest safe dataset and the fewest concurrent clients.
  4. Capture the statement, connection pattern, error-log stack trace, resource usage, and exact server version.
  5. Disable the temporary log after the test and retain the relevant entries.

A reproducible test case should include the schema elements needed to trigger the behavior, the SQL statement, session settings, and the smallest dataset that still fails. Test the case against a current supported MySQL release before filing a bug. Do not label a query as the cause merely because it was running when the service was restarted; the kernel log must rule out an independent OOM event.

Rule out disk and file-descriptor exhaustion

Memory tuning will not repair a full filesystem or an exhausted descriptor limit. Check every filesystem that can hold database files, binary logs, relay logs, temporary files, or application logs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
df -h
df -i
systemctl show mysql -p LimitNOFILE
ulimit -n

A filesystem can have free bytes but no inodes, so df -i matters. Review log and temporary-file retention, binary-log expiration, and unexpected growth before deleting anything. If the error log reports “too many open files,” correct the effective service limit and investigate descriptor leaks or excessive table and connection activity. If the disk is full, free or expand the affected resource first; changing innodb_buffer_pool_size addresses a different failure mode.

Handle InnoDB recovery safely

After an OOM kill or abrupt power loss, InnoDB may perform crash recovery on startup. Preserve the complete error log and wait for recovery to finish if progress is visible. If startup fails during recovery, follow the documented recovery-failure procedure for your MySQL version and make a copy of the data before destructive work.

Do not delete InnoDB data files, redo logs, or system tablespaces to make the service start. Such deletion can turn a recoverable crash into permanent data loss. If recovery repeatedly fails, stop repeated restart attempts, protect the original files, and prepare a minimal diagnostic package for an experienced administrator or support channel.

Apply changes in a controlled order

  1. Capture a baseline. Save the active MySQL variables for innodb_buffer_pool_size, connection limits, temporary-table settings, and relevant service limits. Record free -h, swapon --show, df -h, and the recent error and kernel logs.
  2. Fix the confirmed resource first. For OOM, reduce aggregate memory demand, stop or resize competing services, add appropriately sized swap when suitable, or move to a larger VPS. For disk or descriptors, correct those limits instead of changing memory settings.
  3. Change one large contributor. Reduce the buffer pool or connection and temporary-memory settings in a measured step. Avoid simultaneously changing many variables because you will not know which trade-off mattered.
  4. Restart during a maintenance window. A buffer-pool change normally requires a restart when configured statically. Confirm that the service returns cleanly and inspect the startup log for recovery or configuration errors.
  5. Exercise the real workload. Observe peak memory, swap activity, latency, disk usage, and connection counts during the busiest period you can safely reproduce.
  6. Keep or revert based on evidence. Do not claim success until the logs show stable operation for an observation period that covers the workload that previously caused the restart.

Compare the main remedies

Remedy Peak memory headroom Throughput and latency effect Swap or disk impact Operational risk Root cause or spike mask?
Reduce innodb_buffer_pool_size Usually increases immediately after restart Can lower cache hit rates and increase read latency More physical reads; no swap requirement by itself Requires a restart and adequate recovery time Addresses an oversized shared allocation, but not runaway concurrency
Reduce connection or per-session memory demand Increases with high concurrency Clients may queue or receive connection errors; individual queries may slow May reduce temporary-file pressure if fewer operations run at once Applications may need pooling or retry changes Addresses concurrency-driven peaks
Enable or enlarge swap appropriately Adds short-spike tolerance, not RAM capacity Can become very slow under sustained pressure Uses disk and may increase I/O contention Low database-change risk, but disk sizing and monitoring are essential Usually masks a spike; persistent pressure remains
Stop or resize competing services Returns their reserved memory to the VPS May reduce application capacity or move the bottleneck elsewhere Usually neutral for MySQL disk use Can interrupt unrelated workloads Addresses contention outside MySQL
Move to a larger-memory VPS Provides the largest and most durable margin Often improves cache effectiveness and avoids memory-induced stalls May reduce swap activity; migration requires planning Requires migration or plan change and validation Addresses an undersized platform when tuning cannot create safe headroom
Isolate and fix a repeatable query Removes the specific allocation or execution pattern Can restore normal latency without reducing general cache size Depends on the query and execution plan Testing and a reproducible case are required Addresses the application or server defect directly

Use a decision path after each incident

When an OOM signature is present

Confirm that the killed process and timestamp match the outage. Measure all major consumers, reduce aggregate demand, and inspect service or container limits. Add suitable swap only when disk capacity and latency consequences are acceptable. If pressure returns after conservative tuning, the VPS plan does not have safe headroom; a larger-memory service is the durable remedy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When no OOM signature is present and a query repeats

Preserve the error-log stack trace, reproduce the statement under controlled logging, and test on a current supported MySQL release. Prepare a minimal reproduction rather than repeatedly restarting production and guessing at memory values.

When disk space, inodes, or descriptors are exhausted

Free or expand the affected resource, correct retention and rotation, and raise the effective descriptor limit only after checking why usage is high. Memory changes are not a substitute for filesystem or descriptor capacity.

When startup stops in InnoDB recovery

Preserve logs and data files, allow a normal recovery attempt to complete, and follow the documented recovery-failure procedure. Never delete database files as a first response.

Prevent the next random restart

  • Alert on available memory, swap activity, filesystem bytes and inodes, descriptor usage, and MySQL service state.
  • Keep kernel, service-manager, and MySQL logs long enough to cover the interval in which failures occur.
  • Record configuration changes, restart times, peak connections, and workload changes so a later incident has a usable timeline.
  • Load-test the busiest expected combination of web workers, scheduled jobs, backups, and database clients rather than testing MySQL alone.
  • Review the memory budget after adding an application, plugin, replication role, monitoring agent, or backup process.
  • Use a maintenance window for changes that require restart and verify both startup recovery and post-startup workload behavior.
