When MTG Arena will not update, rejects a login, disconnects during play, or leaves you in a matchmaking queue, start by identifying the failure rather than reinstalling immediately. Check Wizards of the Coast’s current service-status page first. If services are unavailable, local changes cannot restore them. If the service is operating, use the targeted procedure below for your platform and exact symptom.
The quickest route is different for each failure: account recovery is not the same as network repair, a Null Reference loop has a specific proxy test, and a queue that never starts has no documented reset button. Keep notes of every change so you can undo it and tell support exactly what happened.
Use this order before changing anything
- Check service status. Planned maintenance and outages can make every play queue inaccessible. Wizards announced an eight-hour maintenance window for October 7, 2026; that event has passed, so rely on the live status page for present conditions.
- Classify the failure. “Checking for Updates” with a Null Reference error, a rejected password, a total connection failure, lag after connecting, and a queue that never starts require different fixes.
- Confirm the platform. Windows PC, Mac, iOS, and Android can have different menus, installers, and network controls. Do not apply a Windows file or proxy instruction to a phone.
- Change one setting at a time. Record the original value before testing a proxy, VPN, firewall, antivirus, DNS, hosts-file, or router change. Restore a setting when it has no effect.
- Restart only after the relevant change. Restarting the client, computer, router, or phone can clear a transient session, but it will not repair an account or an unavailable service.
Quick symptom map
| What you see | Most useful first path |
|---|---|
| Login rejected or password forgotten | Use account recovery, check every inbox, then choose Access Issues in support. |
| “Checking for Updates” and Null Reference | Use the platform-specific proxy procedure in Wizards’ targeted article. |
| Installer or update fails without that error | Follow the clean PC installation guide; do not start with router changes. |
| Cannot connect to the server | Check status, restart equipment, then compare another network and security settings. |
| Lag or disconnects after joining | Check competing traffic, bandwidth, Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, and another network. |
| Matchmaking queue never starts | Check service and connection, restart once, review known issues, and contact support. |
Recover an account that will not let you sign in
Reset the password through the official account flow
Use Wizards’ password-reset process rather than repeatedly guessing credentials. Enter the email address associated with the account and follow the message you receive. Keep the reset link and password private; support staff should not need your password.
If the reset email does not arrive
- Check the spam, junk, promotions, and quarantine folders.
- Search every inbox that might be associated with the account, including an older address.
- Confirm that the address was typed correctly and request another reset message only after checking those folders.
- Do not use a reset link forwarded by another person or a third-party “account recovery” service.
When recovery still fails
Submit a request through Wizards’ support form and select Access Issues. The account-recovery guidance was updated July 8, 2026. Include the platform, account email, exact error text, and approximate time of the failed attempt, but never include your password or an authentication code.

Changing DNS, opening router ports, or reinstalling Arena cannot correct credentials that the account system rejects. If the same account works on another device, that points toward a local client or network issue; if it fails everywhere, stay with account support rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
Fix a PC update stuck on “Checking for Updates”
Null Reference error: use the targeted proxy procedure
Wizards has a specific article for a client that remains on “Checking for Updates” and displays a Null Reference error. On Windows, open Control Panel → Internet Options → Connections → LAN Settings, then clear the proxy-server option identified in that procedure and apply the change. Mac users should follow the separate Mac proxy instructions in the same official article.
Close and reopen Arena after applying the documented change. If the error remains, take a screenshot and record whether the setting was originally enabled. A managed computer may require an administrator to change or restore proxy settings.
This is an error-specific test, not a universal update fix. Do not disable a proxy for every update problem, especially on a managed school or work computer. If the named error continues after the documented change, restore the previous setting if appropriate and contact support with a screenshot or the exact text.
Repair a PC installation or update that fails generally
For errors other than the Null Reference case, Wizards attributes failed PC installs or updates to causes such as a partial previous installation, network trouble, or a Windows-level problem. Use the clean-install sequence in its current “Can’t Install or Update MTG Arena on PC” guide.
- Close Arena and its launcher.
- Open the default Wizards of the Coast installation directory, if that is where you installed the game, and remove only the MTGA folder. Do not delete unrelated game, work, or personal files.
- Uninstall MTG Arena from Windows’ installed-apps or programs list.
- Download and install Arena again, selecting the 64-bit client when that option is offered.
- If the webpage installer still fails, try the Steam installation as an alternative distribution route.
A clean install removes local program files; it does not replace account recovery and should not be your first response to a confirmed service outage. The PC support page was reported as updated roughly three months before October 13, 2026, so check its current wording before deleting folders.
If the installer fails again, note the step that failed: download, installation, first launch, or update check. That distinction helps support separate a web-download problem from a client startup problem. Avoid deleting folders outside the named Arena directory, and avoid third-party “cleaner” utilities that remove files you have not identified.

When Arena cannot connect to the server
Perform basic network tests
After confirming the service is available, restart the computer and router. If possible, test Arena on another network or another computer. A second network separates a local router or ISP problem from a client or account problem; a second computer helps distinguish device-specific security or installation settings.
Run the tests separately. For example, try the same computer on a trusted phone hotspot, then try another computer on the original home network. A failure that follows the account across both devices is different from a failure isolated to one Windows installation.
Check networks that commonly block game traffic
School, workplace, hotel, and other managed networks may restrict game traffic. Ask the network administrator whether that traffic is permitted rather than attempting to bypass organizational policy. On a personal network, temporarily test with the VPN or proxy disconnected and verify that the firewall and antivirus allow Arena. Re-enable protection immediately after the test if it made no difference.
Do not permanently lower firewall protection to make one launch succeed. Add an appropriate exception only if the security product identifies Arena as blocked and its own documentation supports that change. If another network works immediately, provide that comparison to the administrator or Wizards support.

On a phone or tablet, use Wi-Fi when available, close background apps, and restart the device. Wizards’ mobile FAQ says an internet connection is required and recommends Wi-Fi for stability. If the problem continues across reliable Wi-Fi and cellular data, contact the mobile carrier. Older device specifications in legacy FAQs should not be treated as current compatibility requirements without checking a current platform source.
Keep the mobile test simple: disable bandwidth-heavy background activity, confirm the device has a stable signal, and retry after a restart. Do not assume a successful cellular test means the home Wi-Fi is permanently at fault; wireless congestion can change by room and time of day.
Reduce lag and connection drops after you get into a match
Check bandwidth and competing traffic
Wizards’ support guidance specifies broadband of at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. That figure is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee of lag-free play. Close video streams, cloud backups, large downloads, and other programs using the connection. If several people share the network, test while those activities are idle.

Bandwidth tests measure a moment, not every route Arena uses. Record whether lag appears only when another person streams or uploads, whether it happens at a particular time, and whether other online games or services show the same symptom. Those observations are more useful than repeatedly running a speed test without changing conditions.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
Try a wired Ethernet connection when the device and router support it. This is a diagnostic comparison: if wired play is stable while Wi-Fi disconnects, investigate wireless signal strength, interference, channel congestion, or router placement. A cable is optional and is relevant only when you are testing whether Wi-Fi is the unstable link.
If the device has no Ethernet port, use another supported wired setup or move closer to the router only as a comparison. Do not buy an accessory solely because the speed number is below the support guidance; first establish whether wireless conditions change the result.
Test another network or ISP
Playing briefly through another trusted network can reveal whether the problem follows your home connection. Do not interpret one successful test as proof that your ISP is solely responsible; congestion and route changes can vary by time and destination.
Advanced PC network troubleshooting
Use these steps only when basic tests fail and you administer the computer or network. They can affect other applications, and Wizards warns that public DNS may cause problems on some corporate networks. Make one change, test Arena, and undo it if there is no improvement or another service breaks.

|---|---|---|
| DNS | Temporarily try a reputable public DNS service, following your operating system or router’s documented procedure. | If name resolution improves, your original DNS path may be contributing. Restore the old setting if other services break. |
| Windows hosts file | Remove custom MTG Arena entries, if present, and retain a backup before editing. | A stale manual entry can send Arena to the wrong destination. Do not remove unrelated system entries. |
| Router ports | Forward TCP ports 80, 443, 30010, and 30003 only when you control the router and understand its administration interface. | Port forwarding is a reversible diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. Remove rules that do not help. |
| VPN route | Wizards lists trying a US-based VPN as an advanced test. | Use a provider and service permitted by your policies and local law. If the VPN changes the result, the ordinary route may be the issue; it does not prove the game requires a VPN. |
| Network drivers | Install the current driver supplied for your computer or network adapter. | An old or damaged driver can cause instability, but a driver update is not needed when the problem affects only a confirmed outage. |
Port forwarding and hosts-file edits are easy to leave behind accidentally. Keep a written record or screenshot of each original value, then remove temporary rules after testing. If you do not administer the device or network, stop before changing DNS, hosts files, ports, or drivers and ask the administrator or Wizards support for help.
When matchmaking will not start
Separate a queue problem from a service problem
First verify service status and that another network function works. Then restart the Arena client and retry once. If every queue is unavailable, treat the symptom as a service or connection issue; if only one mode fails, capture the mode name and exact behavior for support. Consult the current known-issues information before making invasive changes.

Note whether the queue button is disabled, spins indefinitely, returns you to the menu, or produces an error. Also record whether casual, ranked, limited, and event queues behave differently. Those details help distinguish a broad outage from a mode-specific issue without assuming a cause.
What Wizards documents about fairness
In its June 3, 2024 explanation, Wizards says unranked matchmaking uses relative deck power and player skill to seek fair pairings. It also acknowledges the limits of any model: With a game as complex as Magic, however, no system will perfectly account for all the strategies, variables, and deck-building options available to players, let alone the myriad motivations those players have.
That explains why a pairing can feel uneven; it is not a client-side repair procedure.

What is not established
The support material does not provide a dedicated current reset or repair sequence for a matchmaking queue that hangs. Do not delete files, change ranking settings, or install optimization software on the assumption that those actions repair matchmaking. Send support the platform, client version if shown, queue or event name, error text, approximate time, and whether other modes worked.
Choose the right fix for the symptom
| Symptom | First targeted action | Avoid as a first step |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot sign in or recover the account | Password reset; check every inbox; submit Access Issues request. | Reinstalling the client or changing DNS. |
| “Checking for Updates” plus Null Reference | Use the documented Windows or Mac proxy procedure. | Disabling proxies for every update issue. |
| PC installer or update fails generally | Follow the clean-install sequence; use the 64-bit client; try Steam if the webpage installer fails. | Deleting folders outside the MTGA installation directory. |
| Cannot connect at all | Status check, restart, alternate network, then security and VPN/proxy tests. | Port forwarding before basic diagnosis. |
| Lag or disconnections in matches | Close bandwidth-heavy programs, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, and test another network. | Assuming the stated bandwidth threshold guarantees stability. |
| Queue never starts | Status and connection checks, client restart, known-issues review, then support. | Assuming matchmaking fairness settings are a repair control. |
What to include in a support request
- Platform: Windows PC, Mac, iOS, or Android.
- The exact screen, error, or button where the failure occurs.
- Whether the status page showed an incident and the approximate local time.
- Client version or update number, when displayed.
- Network type (home Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cellular, school, workplace, or VPN).
- Which reversible tests you performed and what changed.
- Whether another queue, device, or network worked.
- A screenshot with email addresses, account IDs, tokens, and other private data obscured.
Use official Wizards pages for downloads, password recovery, and support. Never send a password, one-time code, payment details, or an unrestricted screenshot of your account.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop local changes when the status page reports an outage, when the same error persists after the procedure specifically written for it, or when a managed network blocks the required traffic. Continuing to reinstall, edit router rules, or disable security tools can create new problems without restoring service. At that point, wait for the service notice or provide the documented details to Wizards support.
Keep temporary diagnostics reversible. Restore proxies, VPN settings, DNS, hosts-file entries, firewall exceptions, and port rules that did not help. That leaves the computer and network in a known state while support investigates.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will reinstalling MTG Arena fix a login failure?
Usually not. Account access uses the password-reset and Access Issues processes; reinstalling addresses damaged or incomplete program files, not credentials.

Should I disable my VPN or proxy permanently?
No. Test without it only when diagnosing a connection or the documented Null Reference update error, then restore the setting if it is not the cause.
Does 25 Mbps guarantee that Arena will not lag?
No. Wizards lists 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload as troubleshooting guidance. Wi-Fi quality, congestion, routing, and competing traffic can still cause lag.
Is there a matchmaking reset button?
No dedicated current queue-repair procedure is documented in the support material described here. Check service and connection, restart the client, review known issues, and contact support with details.

Should I forward ports before restarting my router?
No. Status checks, a restart, and an alternate-network test come first. Port forwarding is an advanced, reversible test for administrators and is not guaranteed to fix Arena.
Can a school or work network block MTG Arena?
Yes. Managed networks may restrict game traffic. Ask the administrator whether Arena is permitted rather than attempting to bypass organizational controls.
Is Ethernet required to play Arena?
No. Wizards recommends trying wired networking as a diagnostic comparison for lag or disconnects. It is optional and only useful when Wi-Fi may be the unstable part of the connection.
What details make a support ticket useful?
Provide the platform, exact error or screen, queue or event name, approximate time, client version when shown, network type, status-page result, and the reversible tests you tried. Remove passwords, codes, and private account data.
The Bottom Line
Check Wizards’ status page first, then match the procedure to the exact symptom. Use account recovery for login problems, the targeted proxy fix only for the Null Reference update error, a clean install for general PC installer failures, basic network comparisons for connection and lag, and support escalation for persistent or undocumented matchmaking failures.
