Fix mouse skipping by isolating the cause before buying anything: test the mouse on plain white paper and another pad, clean the sensor and pad with the mouse disconnected, connect a wired mouse directly to a different USB port, or move a wireless receiver closer and check its charge. Then compare desktop behavior with the affected game. If the fault follows the mouse across surfaces and computers after these checks, contact the manufacturer because hardware damage is possible.

Start by locating where the skipping occurs

“Skipping,” “stuttering,” “lag,” and “inconsistent tracking” describe a symptom, not one diagnosis. A sensor can lose reliable data because of the surface beneath it, dust over the lens, an unstable connection, wireless interference, a game’s input path, or a damaged device. No official source establishes a universal percentage for any of those causes, so the quickest route is controlled comparison rather than guessing.

Before changing several settings at once, reproduce the problem and record four observations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does the pointer skip on the desktop, in a browser, or only inside one game?
  • Does the behavior change on plain white paper or a different mouse pad?
  • Does a wired connection behave differently when connected directly to another USB port?
  • For a wireless mouse, does the symptom change after charging, moving the receiver, or temporarily removing nearby 2.4 GHz devices?

Change one variable at a time. A change that makes the symptom disappear identifies a place to investigate; it does not prove that every mouse with the same symptom has that cause.

A quick isolation matrix

Comparison How to perform it What a change suggests
Game versus desktop Move the pointer in Windows or another application, then in the affected game. Desktop-only problems point toward the mouse, surface, connection, or system. A game-only problem points toward game input, overlays, background software, or polling compatibility.
Current surface versus control surface Try plain white paper, then another pad. If tracking improves, inspect the original surface or its debris before replacing the mouse.
USB hub versus direct port Connect a wired mouse directly to the computer and try a second port. Improvement implicates the hub, port, or connection path rather than proving a sensor fault.
Wireless receiver position Charge the mouse, move the receiver closer, and retest with nearby 2.4 GHz devices moved away. Improvement suggests a power, range, or interference issue.
Original computer versus another computer Install or use the device according to the manufacturer’s instructions and repeat the same surface test. A fault that follows the mouse is more consistent with the device or its accessories; a fault left behind on one PC warrants software or port investigation.

1. Test the surface before changing mouse settings

Use a sheet of plain white paper as a fast control test. Logitech recommends this comparison when tracking is inconsistent. If the cursor becomes stable on paper, test a second mouse pad and inspect the one you normally use rather than immediately buying a new mouse.

Optical sensors can have difficulty with certain surfaces. Logitech’s general tracking guidance says to avoid glass or see-through material, reflective surfaces such as mirrors and metal desks, strongly grooved or grainy materials, and very glossy finishes. These are surface characteristics to eliminate during diagnosis, not a promise that every mouse will fail on every example of them.

Check whether the pad has a damaged area, a curled edge, liquid residue, or particles that the mouse feet can cross. ZOWIE’s guidance specifically calls for keeping its pad free of debris. Move the mouse over a clean section and compare the result with the problem area.

When a replacement pad is justified

A replacement pad is a reasonable purchase only after the control test implicates the current surface—for example, tracking is stable on white paper and another pad but repeatedly fails on the original. Choose a compatible, non-reflective surface; do not assume any particular pad will repair a sensor that also skips elsewhere. A pad is optional for diagnosis, not a prerequisite for the free tests.

2. Clean the sensor and pad safely

Power the mouse off or unplug it before cleaning. Logitech notes that “The sensor lens may be dirty” as a possible explanation for stuttering or skipping. Dust, lint, hair, and pad debris can obstruct the sensor’s view or alter the surface it reads.

  1. Disconnect the mouse or switch it off.
  2. Turn it over and inspect the sensor opening and the pad under good light.
  3. Remove visible debris from the outside of the sensor area and pad using the method allowed by the device maker. A soft brush or microfiber cloth can be an optional aid.
  4. Reconnect the mouse and repeat the same straight-line and slow-movement test on the original surface and on white paper.

Follow the model’s own care instructions. Do not disassemble the mouse, pour liquid into the sensor opening, or assume that a particular cleaning chemical is safe. The official guidance supports cleaning the exterior sensor area and pad; it does not establish one universal product or procedure for every model.

3. Stabilize a wired mouse connection

A wired mouse that receives intermittent power or data can feel like it has a bad sensor. Test the connection before changing in-game sensitivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Unplug the mouse.
  2. Connect it directly to a USB port on the computer, bypassing hubs.
  3. Try a different USB port, preferably one on the computer rather than a monitor or dock.
  4. Move the mouse while observing desktop tracking, then retest the game.
  5. Inspect the cable along its length for cuts, crushed sections, or a connector that loosens when moved.

Logitech’s G502 troubleshooting specifically recommends avoiding powered and monitor hubs while diagnosing lag. That advice is model-specific, but the direct-port comparison is a useful diagnostic for other wired mice as well. Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance likewise recommends unplugging and reconnecting the device, trying another port, and removing a hub for testing.

If the mouse works reliably from one port but not another, use the working port temporarily and investigate the computer’s port, dock, or hub. That result alone does not show that the mouse sensor is defective.

4. Restore a wireless mouse’s link

Wireless tracking problems can result from low charge, receiver placement, or radio congestion. Start with the reversible checks:

  1. Charge the mouse fully or replace its batteries according to the model’s instructions.
  2. Move the receiver closer to the mouse. Logitech’s gaming-mouse guidance recommends keeping the receiver within 20 cm of the mouse.
  3. Temporarily move wireless routers and other 2.4 GHz devices away. Logitech recommends keeping the mouse and receiver at least 2 m from routers and other 2.4 GHz equipment.
  4. Reconnect or re-pair the mouse using the manufacturer’s procedure, then repeat the desktop and game tests.

The 20 cm and 2 m figures are Logitech guidance, not universal engineering limits for every wireless product. Treat them as practical starting points. A receiver extension cable or a different placement can help establish whether distance or obstruction matters, but do not purchase one until moving the receiver produces a meaningful change.

5. Separate a game-specific problem from system-wide tracking

If the pointer skips in Windows, a browser, and multiple applications, continue with surface, cleaning, connection, battery, and hardware checks. If it skips only in one game, leave the sensor alone initially and inspect that game’s input path.

Check the game’s input options

  • Open the game’s mouse or input settings and verify that the intended mouse is selected where the game offers device selection.
  • Compare raw-input, enhanced-pointer, acceleration, or similar options only if the game documents them. Change one option, restart the game if requested, and retest.
  • Check whether the game has a separate sensitivity or aiming mode that makes normal movement appear inconsistent.
  • Temporarily close overlays, capture tools, macro utilities, and other background applications as a diagnostic. If the issue disappears, re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict.

Do not treat a game-only symptom as proof that the mouse is broken. A title can process input differently from the desktop, and background software can affect only that title’s input path.

Consider polling rate carefully

Very high polling rates can be handled poorly by some older game engines. Razer’s HyperPolling guidance discusses trying a lower supported polling rate, checking device firmware, and reviewing game input settings for supported HyperPolling devices.

This is not a universal fix. Not every mouse offers an adjustable polling rate, and Razer’s HyperPolling advice applies to the supported devices covered by that guidance. If your mouse software provides a polling-rate control, note the current value, select a lower value that the device supports, restart the game if necessary, and compare movement. Restore the original value if there is no improvement or if responsiveness becomes less suitable for your use.

6. Check device software and firmware without adding new variables

Use the current, supported device software for the exact mouse model. Logitech states that its older Firmware Update Tool is no longer maintained; use the supported software path listed for the specific device instead. Avoid installing utilities intended for a different model simply because they have a similar name.

Before updating:

  • Write down current sensitivity, button, and polling settings if the software allows them.
  • Connect a wired mouse directly to the computer, or keep a wireless mouse charged and its receiver stable.
  • Close other mouse-configuration utilities while testing for conflicts.
  • Apply only firmware offered for the exact model and follow the vendor’s interruption warnings.

A software update can address compatibility, but these troubleshooting sources do not establish that a driver or firmware issue is the cause of every skipping report. Treat software changes as an isolation step, not as proof of a defect.

7. Use another computer to determine whether the fault follows the mouse

After the surface, cleaning, connection, and game checks, test the mouse on another computer. Use the same control surface and, where possible, the same type of connection. ZOWIE recommends trying another PC and another pad, and checking whether other gaming-mouse software conflicts.

  • Works on the second computer: investigate the original computer’s USB ports, hubs, game settings, overlays, and mouse software.
  • Skips on both computers and multiple surfaces: the problem is more consistent with the mouse, cable, receiver, battery system, or physical sensor, although only the manufacturer can confirm a repair diagnosis.
  • Fails only in one game on both computers: focus on that game’s input settings, overlays, and compatibility rather than replacing the mouse.

Use a clean test setup and change one variable at a time. A second computer is a diagnostic control, not a guarantee that every operating-system or driver difference has been eliminated.

8. Know when to contact the manufacturer

Contact the manufacturer after the mouse still skips across multiple surfaces and computers, or when the cable, connector, receiver, or housing shows physical damage. Include the model, connection type, operating system, games affected, whether the desktop also skips, the surfaces tested, and the result of the direct-port or receiver-placement test.

For a product still under warranty, follow the maker’s warranty-support route rather than opening the mouse. ZOWIE recommends warranty support when the issue persists after trying another PC and pad and checking for software conflicts. Logitech likewise directs users to contact support after completing its listed troubleshooting checks.

Support may ask for a video, serial number, firmware version, or purchase information. Supply only what the manufacturer requests. Do not promise yourself that a replacement mouse is necessary until support has evaluated a fault that persists under controlled tests.

Should you buy cleaning supplies, a pad, or a new mouse?

Most initial checks cost nothing. A soft brush or microfiber cloth is optional, and a compatible pad is justified only when the current surface fails the paper and alternate-pad comparison. No evidence here supports recommending a particular mouse model, a universal cleaning product, or a replacement mouse as the default solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Purchase When it makes sense When to wait
Sensor-cleaning supply You need a soft, model-compatible way to remove visible exterior debris. The sensor and pad are already clean, or the model’s care instructions prohibit the proposed method.
Mouse pad Tracking is stable on white paper or another pad but fails on the current surface. The mouse skips on every tested surface or only inside one game.
Replacement mouse The manufacturer confirms a hardware fault or the mouse fails on multiple computers and surfaces after basic checks. You have not yet tested a direct USB port, receiver placement, charge, game settings, and another surface.

A concise decision path

  1. Reproduce the skipping on the desktop and in the affected game.
  2. Test plain white paper and another pad.
  3. Disconnect the mouse, clean the exterior sensor area and pad according to its instructions, and retest.
  4. For wired models, bypass hubs and try another direct USB port. For wireless models, charge the mouse, move the receiver closer, and reduce nearby 2.4 GHz interference.
  5. If only one game is affected, inspect its input settings, overlays, background software, and—when supported by the device—polling rate.
  6. Use the supported software for the exact model; do not rely on Logitech’s discontinued Firmware Update Tool.
  7. Repeat the test on another computer.
  8. Escalate to manufacturer support when the fault follows the mouse or physical damage is evident.

This order starts with free, reversible checks and preserves evidence about what changed. It avoids assuming that a new mouse or pad is required before the symptom has been localized.
