If movies or scripted shows look unnaturally fluid, turn the television’s motion-processing feature off and compare the same scene. Samsung labels the controls Auto Motion Plus or Picture Clarity; LG uses TruMotion. If disabling it removes the “soap opera effect” but leaves blur or rough pans, use the relevant custom control sparingly rather than turning every picture option up.
For flicker, lines, colored dots, abnormal color, or a persistent defect, run the TV’s built-in Picture Test before buying a cable or changing numerous settings. A fault visible in that test points toward the television and possibly service. A problem limited to one HDMI device points toward that device, its settings, or its cable.
Start with the symptom, not the setting
“Picture problem” can describe several unrelated behaviors. Watch the same scene in a built-in streaming app, over-the-air television if available, and each external input. Note whether the issue appears only during camera pans, only with fast action, only in films, or only on one source.
| What you see | What it commonly indicates | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Movies look unnaturally fluid, like a live studio video | Motion interpolation, commonly called the soap-opera effect | Turn Auto Motion Plus, Picture Clarity, or TruMotion off and replay the same scene |
| Moving objects look smeared or fuzzy | Motion blur, either from the content, panel response, or processing | Use the manufacturer’s Blur Reduction or De-Blur control only after testing the feature off |
| Slow pans or zooms look uneven or “steppy” | Judder caused by a frame-rate mismatch or cadence conversion | Adjust Judder Reduction or De-Judder in a custom mode, if needed |
| Brightness pulses, the screen flickers, or it changes with the room | Backlight processing, Eco features, a source signal, or a television fault | Run Picture Test; then check Eco settings and the affected input |
| Lines or colorful dots appear | Cable/source problem or an internal display fault | Run Picture Test before replacing parts |
| Color bleeds or looks wrong on one set-top box or console | HDMI format, cable, or source-output setting | Test another input and check the TV’s HDMI color setting |
Samsung’s support pages use symptom labels such as “TV picture is flickering” and “Lines or colorful dots appear on the screen.” Use those descriptions when searching the support section for your exact model.

Why motion smoothing creates the soap-opera effect
Film and television do not all supply the same number of frames per second. Samsung uses live programs such as sports or parades filmed at 30 frames per second and most movies filmed at 24 frames per second as examples in its explanation. The television may analyze adjacent frames and synthesize intermediate frames so movement appears more continuous. That is a processing choice, not a repair for a defective panel or a weak HDMI signal.
On a movie, the inserted frames can remove the cadence viewers associate with cinema. Faces, sets, and camera moves then appear unusually immediate and fluid, which is why the result is called the “soap opera effect.” Samsung Support says most movies are filmed at 24 frames per second and are not intended to be viewed with these features. Preferences differ: some people prefer interpolation for sports, live events, or animation, while others want the original film motion.
Judder is a different complaint from blur. Samsung describes judder as occurring when a show or movie has fewer frames than the TV displays. A slow pan may therefore look uneven even when individual objects are not fuzzy. Blur is the loss of definition on a moving object. Treating judder with a blur control, or blur with a judder control, can make the picture worse.
Samsung: disable or tune Auto Motion Plus
Test with the feature off
- Open Settings.
- Choose Picture, then Expert Settings.
- Open Auto Motion Plus Settings. On some televisions the same menu is called Picture Clarity Settings.
- Set Auto Motion Plus or Picture Clarity to Off.
- Replay the identical movie or scripted scene, preferably from the same source and at the same picture mode.
Samsung’s Auto option can switch motion processing on or off based on the program type. That makes it useful for convenience but unsuitable as a controlled test: the setting may behave differently between a film, a live broadcast, and another app. Off is the clearest way to determine whether interpolation is causing the unnatural look.
Use Custom only for the complaint you actually have
If Off removes the soap-opera effect but you still dislike a specific artifact, select Custom and change one control at a time.
| Samsung control | Use it when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Blur Reduction | Moving people, text, or objects become fuzzy | It targets blur in moving content; higher values can restore an overly processed look |
| Judder Reduction | Pans or zooms look rough because the program has fewer frames than the display | It targets uneven cadence; higher values can produce the soap-opera effect |
| LED Clear Motion | A separate backlight-based motion option is specifically needed | It is not the same adjustment as Blur or Judder Reduction and can introduce flicker on a narrowly identified model/software combination |
Move the relevant slider in small increments, watch several scenes, and stop when the artifact is acceptable. If the picture starts looking synthetic, return to Off or reduce the setting. Menu names and available sliders vary by model, input signal, picture mode, and software generation; the manual for the model takes precedence over this general path.

LG: use TruMotion and its model-specific modes
On the LG models covered by the cited user manual, go to the picture controls and open TruMotion. The available choices are Off, Smooth, Clear, and User. In User mode, the television exposes De-Judder and De-Blur.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| LG option | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Off | Removes TruMotion processing for a direct comparison |
| Smooth | Applies stronger motion processing for a fluid appearance |
| Clear | Uses a preset intended to improve motion clarity |
| User | Lets you set De-Judder and De-Blur separately |
LG’s manual explicitly cautions that configurable items differ by model. Input signal and picture mode can also change which controls are selectable. If TruMotion is absent, greyed out, or named differently, consult the exact manual rather than assuming the television is faulty.
Narrow gaming exception: a 30-fps PS5 situation
An LG support article dated July 17, 2026 describes a specific case in which a game outputting 30 frames per second produces stutter or an afterimage. For supported televisions, LG suggests turning off ALLM and using TruMotion when it is available. TruMotion cannot be selected while TV Game mode is active. This is a model- and game-dependent troubleshooting option, not a general recommendation to disable ALLM or to add motion processing to every game. Test input lag and image quality after each change and restore Game mode when the game does not need this workaround.
Run Picture Test before troubleshooting other defects
For flicker, lines, colored dots, abnormal colors, or a defect that persists after motion processing is off, use the TV’s internal diagnostic image. It removes the external video source from the test and creates a useful fork:
- Defect appears in Picture Test: the television, panel, backlight, or internal electronics are implicated. Follow the manufacturer’s service path.
- Picture Test is clean: investigate the app, broadcast, HDMI device, output format, and cable that produce the problem. Do not buy parts for an internal fault based only on an external-source symptom.
Samsung Picture Test paths
On Samsung models from 2022 onward, the current path is All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test. On previous models, use Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test. Labels can vary slightly by software generation, but the test is normally under Support or Self Diagnosis.

Fix a flickering picture
First separate processing from a source fault
Turn off motion processing and run Picture Test. If flicker changes with room lighting or scene brightness, inspect Samsung’s Eco Solution features; those features can alter brightness in response to ambient light or the content. Test the affected HDMI input separately, and temporarily remove other devices from the same electrical circuit if the flicker appears across sources.
Keep Samsung’s 2018 QLED exception in scope
Samsung identifies a specific issue on 2018 QLED televisions running software version 1270.6: flicker may occur when LED Clear Motion is enabled. For that exact model and software combination, Samsung’s guidance is to turn LED Clear Motion off while following its update or support instructions. This does not establish a general flicker defect on other Samsung models, years, or software versions.
If flicker is visible in the built-in Picture Test, do not treat a new streaming app, generic cable, or motion slider as a repair for the television. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider with the model number, software version, and test result.

Fix lines or colorful dots
Run Picture Test first. If the test itself shows lines or colored dots, the display hardware or internal signal path needs manufacturer service. If the test is normal and the artifacts occur only with one external device, replace that device’s cable first, then troubleshoot the device if the lines remain. Compare another input and source before concluding that the panel is damaged.
A cable replacement is justified only when the source-specific checks point to the cable or when the television’s HDMI test identifies a cable problem. The available Samsung HDMI test is designed for cables shorter than 2 metres; results may not be reliable with longer cables. The sources do not establish a particular HDMI version, cable model, or cable as a universal fix for judder, the soap-opera effect, flicker, or a panel fault.
Correct abnormal color and HDMI format problems
Check the source and cable before changing the whole picture mode
If color bleeding or abnormal color appears only from a set-top box, console, or other HDMI source, test a different cable and input, then check the source’s output resolution and color format. A clean Picture Test points away from the panel.

LG HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color
LG advises checking HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color when a set-top box shows abnormal colors. Set it On for a source that supports 4K (3840 × 2160). Set it Off for an HD source at 1920 × 1080 or lower. The control’s location and availability depend on the model. If changing it makes the source blank, return to the previous value and verify the set-top box’s output mode before trying another input.
Reset picture settings only when settings are the problem
When the entire image looks wrong because several picture options have been changed, Samsung provides All Settings → Picture → Expert Settings → Reset Picture. Record intentional changes first—brightness, contrast, color temperature, and input-specific choices—because the reset restores picture settings to factory defaults.
Samsung’s Film mode is not a universal motion fix. Its guidance applies only to specific older input types and resolutions: TV, AV, Component 480i/1080i, and HDMI 1080i. It should not be presented as a remedy for every modern streaming, 4K, or gaming signal.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
- Name the symptom. Decide whether it is the soap-opera effect, blur, judder, flicker, lines, colored dots, abnormal color, or a source-specific issue.
- Compare sources. Check a built-in app, another app or broadcast, and each HDMI device. Note exactly where the problem appears.
- Test motion processing. Set Samsung Auto Motion Plus/Picture Clarity or LG TruMotion to Off and replay the same scene.
- Tune only if necessary. If Off fixes the unnatural look but leaves one artifact, use Samsung Custom Blur Reduction or Judder Reduction, or LG User De-Blur or De-Judder, in small increments.
- Run Picture Test for persistent non-motion defects. Use the Samsung path for your model, or the equivalent Support/Self Diagnosis test on another television.
- Follow the test result. A defect in the test warrants manufacturer support or qualified service. A clean test sends you back to the affected app, broadcast, HDMI device, output format, and cable.
- Apply narrow fixes. Check Eco Solution for brightness changes, the named 2018 QLED LED Clear Motion exception if it exactly matches your set, HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color for LG sources, and a cable replacement only when testing identifies cable trouble.
- Use the model manual. Menu paths, supported controls, and behavior change with model, software generation, input signal, and picture mode.
Common mistakes that make picture problems harder to diagnose
- Changing several controls at once: you lose the ability to identify which setting caused or fixed the behavior. Return to a known state and change one item.
- Using Auto as the diagnostic setting: Auto can respond differently to different program types. Use Off for the comparison.
- Confusing blur with judder: fuzzy moving objects and uneven pans require different controls.
- Assuming every flicker is motion smoothing: Eco brightness changes, LED Clear Motion, the source, power environment, and internal faults have different remedies.
- Replacing a cable before testing: a cable cannot repair lines visible in the built-in Picture Test or a panel fault.
- Applying a gaming workaround universally: the LG ALLM and TruMotion advice is tied to a described 30-fps game situation and supported models.
- Forcing a menu path from another model: manufacturers change labels and locations across years and software versions.
When to stop adjusting settings and request service
Request manufacturer support or qualified service when lines, colorful dots, flicker, or another defect appears in the television’s own Picture Test, or when the problem persists across built-in apps and inputs after a reset and source check. Have the model, software version, affected input, and Picture Test result ready. A clean test with a problem confined to one HDMI source is instead evidence to continue troubleshooting that source, its output settings, and its cable.
The practical rule is simple: remove motion processing to diagnose the soap-opera effect; use blur and judder controls only for the artifact they address; and let Picture Test determine whether a broader picture defect belongs to the TV or to the signal path.
