The right fix depends on what you see. For an unnaturally smooth, video-like movie image, reduce or disable Motion Smoothing, Action Smoothing, or Judder Reduction. For jerky camera pans, raise Judder Reduction gradually. For blurred sports or fast action, try a small increase in Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity if your TCL model offers it. Change one control at a time while watching the same scene, because smoothing, clarity modes, brightness, and input lag involve different trade-offs.

If the defect appears only in one app, HDMI input, console, or streaming box, the television may not be the cause. Compare another source before changing every picture setting, then check the external device’s output mode, the selected TV input, the HDMI cable, and another port.

Identify the symptom before changing a setting

TCL televisions use different names for motion processing, and the useful adjustment depends on the artifact. Start with a scene that makes the problem obvious—a slow film pan, a sports replay, or a fast game sequence—and use it for every comparison.

What you see Most relevant adjustment What to watch for
Movies look unnaturally smooth or like live video Lower or turn off Motion Smoothing or Action Smoothing. If Judder Reduction is separate, lower it as well. Excessive smoothing can create a “soap opera” appearance and processing artifacts.
Slow pans stutter or move in uneven steps Raise Judder Reduction or the general motion-smoothing control gradually, starting low to medium. Too much processing can make film content look artificial or produce halos around moving objects.
Players, cars, or camera movement smear during sports and action Try a small increase in Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity, if available. LED Motion or similar backlight-strobing modes can reduce perceived blur but may lower brightness or cause flicker for some viewers.
Faint trails, double edges, or ghosting Compare several scenes and sources first; there is no single setting that fixes every cause of ghosting. Determine whether the effect is present in built-in apps, on every input, or only with one device.

TCL’s support guidance describes low-to-medium motion settings as a starting point for judder, not as a universal calibrated value. Your panel, software version, source frame rate, room lighting, and personal preference all affect the result.

Why TCL motion settings change the picture

Television video is delivered as a sequence of frames. TCL’s motion explainer uses 24 frames per second for typical film content and 30, 60, or 120 frames per second as examples of other content rates. When a source has fewer frames than the panel displays, the TV can repeat frames, create intermediate frames, or use a backlight technique to make movement appear clearer.

Judder reduction and frame interpolation

Judder Reduction analyzes adjacent frames and may generate intermediate frames. That can make a slow pan look continuous, but invented frames can also create a hyper-real, video-like look or distort a moving object. A low setting generally changes the source less than a high setting. Turning it off preserves the original cadence when that is your priority.

Blur reduction and LED Motion

Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity may use different processing from Judder Reduction. On some TCL models, LED Motion (also called a clarity or backlight mode) briefly changes the backlight timing rather than generating as many new frames. It can improve perceived detail in fast movement, but the picture may become dimmer and some viewers notice flicker. Do not judge this feature in a bright showroom mode alone; compare it at your normal viewing brightness.

Source quality still matters

Low-bitrate streaming, a heavily compressed sports feed, an unusual frame-rate conversion, or a device outputting the wrong resolution can look blurred even with motion processing disabled. A TV setting cannot restore detail that was removed before the signal reached the television.

Most of these can be improved by adjusting or resetting motion controls on your TV.

That wording appears in TCL Support’s official guide, “Troubleshooting Motion Issues on Your TCL Google TV.” It is a useful starting principle, but source checks are important when a problem is limited to one input or app.

Choose a picture preset as your starting point

Presets often change several controls at once, including motion processing. TCL describes Sports as a mode that may apply more smoothing, while Movie or Cinema is intended to stay closer to a film presentation. Try Movie or Cinema for films, then compare Standard and Sports for live events using the same shot. Do not assume one preset is objectively best: a viewer who dislikes judder may prefer more processing, while another may prefer the original cadence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pause on a scene with a moving subject or camera pan.
  2. Switch between the two presets you are considering.
  3. Wait for the same movement to repeat or replay the clip.
  4. Keep the preset that gives the desired balance before making individual motion adjustments.

Presets can be stored separately for different inputs on some models. If a built-in app looks correct but a console input does not, change the preset while that input is selected rather than assuming the television has one global setting.

Find motion controls on your TCL platform

Menu labels and locations vary by TCL model and software version. An option shown in a support article may be absent on another panel; that normally means the model does not expose that control, not that the television is malfunctioning.

Google TV

  1. Press the Settings (gear) button on the remote.
  2. Open Picture.
  3. Choose Advanced Settings or Advanced picture settings.
  4. Open Motion or Motion Clarity.
  5. Look for controls such as Judder Reduction, Blur Reduction, or an on/off motion option.

The exact wording and number of sliders depend on the model and installed software. If Motion is not listed, check the selected picture preset and input, then consult the guide for the exact model.

Roku TV

  1. Start playing the content that looks wrong.
  2. Press the Star (*) button.
  3. Open Picture settings, then Advanced picture settings.
  4. Look for Action Smoothing and, on supported models, LED Motion Clarity or LED Motion.

Roku picture and motion options can be model-dependent. TCL’s Roku guidance also notes that each HDMI input can remember its own picture and motion settings, so repeat the adjustment on every input that needs it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fire TV

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Display & Sounds, then Picture.
  3. Open Advanced Settings, Expert Settings, or a Motion section, depending on the model.
  4. Adjust the available motion controls while the affected source is displayed.

Fire TV models do not all use the same labels. If a control is missing, first verify that you are editing the affected input and not a different source or preset.

Use a controlled adjustment procedure

Changing several sliders at once makes it impossible to know which one helped. Use this sequence for a reliable comparison.

  1. Pick a repeatable scene. Use a film pan for judder, a sports replay for blur, or a moving game camera for interactive content. Avoid judging from a static menu.
  2. Record the starting state. Note the preset and each motion value, or photograph the menu. This gives you a way back if the experiment gets worse.
  3. Change only one setting. Move Judder Reduction one step, replay the same movement, and decide whether the change helped. Then return it to the original value before testing another control if you want a clean comparison.
  4. Stop at the lowest effective level. For judder, increase processing only until the pan is acceptable. For a soap-opera effect, reduce it until the film looks natural. For fast-action blur, use the smallest Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity increase that improves detail.
  5. Check brightness and artifacts. Enable LED Motion or a similar clarity feature only after checking whether the loss of brightness or visible flicker is acceptable. Look for halos, tearing around objects, or warped backgrounds.
  6. Test more than one scene. A setting that helps a slow pan can make a sports feed or animation worse. Check at least one film scene and one fast-motion scene before keeping it.
  7. Save or leave the input-specific setting. Some TCL televisions remember changes per input or per picture mode. Verify the setting again after switching sources.

When the problem is limited to one app or source

A source comparison separates TV processing from a signal or application problem.

Built-in app versus another built-in app

Play a similar clip in a second app. If only one app looks blurry or stutters, close it and reopen it. On Fire TV, clear the app cache or data when those options are available in the system menus; signing in again may be required after clearing data. Check whether the issue follows one title or affects everything in that app, because a single stream can have unusual encoding or a lower-quality feed.

Built-in apps versus an HDMI device

If the TV’s own apps look normal but a streaming box, disc player, console, or computer does not, inspect the external device first:

  • Confirm the device is outputting a resolution and refresh rate supported by the TV.
  • Check whether the device has its own motion-smoothing, frame-interpolation, cinema, or low-latency setting enabled.
  • Verify that the TV is on the intended HDMI input and that the input’s picture mode is not an old setting saved for another device.
  • Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends of the HDMI cable.
  • Try another HDMI port to rule out a port-specific connection problem.

For external 4K or higher-frame-rate content, TCL advises using a High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable appropriate to the signal. That is a compatibility check, not a general cure for interpolation artifacts, poor streaming quality, or incorrect TV settings. Do the free source, port, and output checks before replacing a cable.

Check content and network conditions

Compare a downloaded or locally played clip with a live stream when possible. If only a live stream breaks up or loses detail, bandwidth, congestion, or the service’s adaptive quality may be involved. Motion controls cannot correct dropped frames or a low-resolution stream.

Handle gaming separately

Game Mode is designed to reduce processing and input lag, so keep it enabled when responsiveness matters. Motion interpolation intended for films can add delay and may not behave consistently with a console or PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the console or PC HDMI input.
  2. Enable Game Mode in that input’s picture settings.
  3. Confirm the console or PC’s output resolution and refresh rate.
  4. Test camera movement and controller response in an actual game, not only in a trailer.
  5. If the image is still blurred, investigate the game’s own motion-blur option, output bandwidth, and HDMI connection before enabling television smoothing.

Game Mode can change other image processing, so its appearance may differ from Movie or Standard. Use a separate movie preset for film playback rather than repeatedly turning Game Mode on and off without checking which input is selected.

Understand double images and ghosting

Double edges can come from motion processing, panel response, source compression, an overdriven game setting, or the signal itself. Because those causes look similar, avoid jumping straight to a high smoothing value.

  1. View the same moving object in a built-in app and an HDMI source.
  2. Turn motion processing off temporarily and compare the edge of the object.
  3. Try a different scene with a high-contrast subject, such as white text moving across a dark background.
  4. Check whether the effect is visible only at one refresh rate or resolution.
  5. Restore the least objectionable setting and investigate the source if the artifact persists everywhere.

If ghosting remains across multiple inputs and content types with motion controls disabled, the support material does not identify one guaranteed setting that will fix every case. Persistent, source-independent artifacts may require TCL support or service evaluation rather than more aggressive interpolation.

Reset, power-cycle, and update only after testing

Resetting is useful when many experiments have left the picture worse, but it erases your adjustments. Do it after symptom, preset, and source checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset picture settings

Use the picture menu’s reset option on the affected input or mode, where provided. On Fire TV, TCL specifically recommends resetting picture settings when multiple changes have degraded the image. Reapply one adjustment at a time afterward and write down the values you prefer.

Power-cycle the television and source

  1. Turn off the TV and the connected device.
  2. Unplug both from power briefly.
  3. Reconnect the TV and source, then select the correct HDMI input.
  4. Replay the test scene before changing motion controls again.

A power cycle can clear a temporary handshake or processing state, but it does not correct a permanently wrong output resolution or a damaged cable.

Check for system updates

Install an available TV system update using the television’s own update menu, then retest. Menu behavior can change with software, so recheck the model-specific path if a control moves or disappears.

Make the trade-off that suits your viewing

Priority Starting approach Likely compromise
Film-like motion Movie/Cinema preset; Motion Smoothing and Judder Reduction low or off Some pans may retain visible judder.
Smoother pans Increase Judder Reduction gradually from a low setting More video-like motion and possible interpolation artifacts.
Fast-action clarity Small Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity increase; test LED Motion separately LED-based modes can reduce brightness or introduce flicker.
Lowest game latency Game Mode on; use the console or PC’s own motion settings sparingly Less television processing and sometimes a softer-looking image.
Stable external playback Correct output mode, suitable HDMI connection, and input-specific picture settings Changing cables cannot repair poor source encoding or TV interpolation choices.

A quick decision checklist

  • Is the image too smooth? Lower or disable Motion Smoothing, Action Smoothing, and Judder Reduction.
  • Are camera pans choppy? Raise Judder Reduction slowly and stop at the first acceptable level.
  • Is fast sports action smeared? Try Blur Reduction or Motion Clarity, then check brightness and flicker.
  • Is the issue visible only in one app or input? Compare another source and troubleshoot that app or device.
  • Is a console involved? Use Game Mode and verify the console’s output mode before changing movie-oriented processing.
  • Is the problem still present after a reset and source comparison? Record the model, software version, input, content, and settings before contacting TCL support.
