To remove the soap-opera effect on most QLED TVs, turn off the television’s motion-interpolation setting. On Samsung sets, press Home or Settings, open Picture → Expert Settings → Picture Clarity Settings (called Auto Motion Plus on some older models), and choose Off. This restores the original frame rate and usually removes the overly smooth, video-like appearance.
If disabling it makes films look too juddery, use Custom mode instead: raise Blur Reduction gradually, keep Judder Reduction low, and leave LED Clear Motion off unless you specifically prefer its effect. Motion blur and the soap-opera effect are caused by video processing, not by QLED hardware itself.
What the soap-opera effect looks like
The soap-opera effect makes a film or scripted drama look unnaturally smooth, as if it were recorded for live television. Camera pans glide instead of showing the small amount of judder normally present in 24-frame-per-second cinema, and actors can appear to move with a hyper-real, video-like sharpness. Some viewers also see halos, shimmering around moving objects, or a faint double image.

A QLED television is an LCD television that uses a quantum-dot layer to improve color and brightness. That display technology does not create the soap-opera effect. The effect comes from the TV generating intermediate frames between the frames in the source video, a process called motion interpolation or motion smoothing.

Why motion interpolation creates an artificial look
A movie may provide 24 distinct frames each second, while a modern panel can refresh much faster. Motion processing analyzes adjacent frames, estimates where objects should move, and inserts computer-generated frames. When the estimate is convincing, movement appears clearer. When it is wrong, you may notice warped edges, a brief halo, a duplicated object, or a background that seems to bend.
Manufacturers tune these algorithms for different types of content. Live sports and studio broadcasts often benefit from some smoothing because they contain fast pans and motion at around 30 frames per second. The same setting can make a carefully photographed film look unlike its intended presentation. A setting that looks good for a football match therefore may be distracting during a movie.
Samsung QLED: turn off Picture Clarity or Auto Motion Plus
Fastest fix: set the control to Off
- Press Home or Settings on the Samsung remote.
- Open Picture.
- Select Expert Settings.
- Open Picture Clarity Settings. Older Samsung televisions may label this menu Auto Motion Plus.
- Set the main control to Off.
This disables the interpolation that produces the soap-opera look. Play the same scene that bothered you and wait through a camera pan or a person crossing the screen before deciding whether the change worked.

Samsung describes Picture Clarity Settings as controls that “Enhance picture sharpness to optimize for fast-moving images.” Its guidance also notes that motion-smoothing settings can look good on live TV, such as sporting events or parades filmed at 30 frames per second. That is why the setting may be useful for one source and undesirable for another.

Use Custom when Off is too harsh
Some viewers prefer a small amount of processing, especially when a 24-frame-per-second film produces obvious judder during slow pans. In Picture Clarity Settings, choose Custom and adjust the controls separately:
| Control | What it changes | Suggested starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Blur Reduction | Targets the smeared appearance of fast-moving objects. It generally has the greatest effect on sports, games and other high-motion scenes. | Start low and increase one step at a time until moving details are clear enough. |
| Judder Reduction | Targets the uneven motion seen in low-frame-rate film and television content, particularly slow camera pans. | Keep it low for a cinematic appearance; raise it only if film judder is the problem. |
| LED Clear Motion | Uses a black-frame or backlight-scanning style technique to make motion appear sharper. | Leave it off initially. Test it separately because it can introduce visible flicker. |
Change only one value at a time and use the actual movie or show you watch. A setting that improves a football match can add artifacts to a film, and a setting that looks smooth in a menu demonstration may look unnatural in a dark scene.
Check LED Clear Motion separately
LED Clear Motion is not the same as interpolation. It can alter perceived motion sharpness by briefly reducing or modulating the backlight, but some viewers notice flicker or a dimmer picture. If motion still looks odd after choosing Custom, switch LED Clear Motion off and compare the same scene. If you prefer it on, check for flicker during bright scenes and long viewing sessions.

| Consideration | Motion processing Off | Custom, lightly tuned |
|---|---|---|
| Cinematic naturalness | Preserves the source’s original cadence and avoids the soap-opera effect. | Can retain a film-like look if Judder Reduction stays low. |
| Fast-action clarity | Shows the source as delivered; some broadcasts may look blurrier. | Low Blur Reduction can make sports and rapid movement easier to follow. |
| Interpolation artifacts | Removes generated-frame errors such as halos and warped edges. | Artifacts become more likely as either slider is increased. |
| Flicker risk | None from motion processing itself. | LED Clear Motion may cause flicker; test it independently. |
| Gaming and input lag | Usually the simplest baseline, but the exact delay depends on the TV’s picture mode. | Some processing options may be unavailable in Game mode or may add processing delay. |
| Availability | Normally available, although the menu name and location vary by model, firmware and source. | May be unavailable for some HDR formats, apps or picture modes. |
Why motion settings may disappear in Game mode
Game mode is designed to reduce processing delay between a controller and the image. To do that, a television may disable or limit motion-interpolation features. If a slider is greyed out or missing after you select Game mode, this is usually a mode restriction rather than a fault.

For console play, first decide whether low latency or additional smoothing matters more. Keep Game mode enabled when responsive controls are important. Then check the console’s output resolution and frame rate. A game running at a stable high frame rate may already look clear, while a lower or variable frame rate can expose ordinary sample-and-hold blur that interpolation cannot completely remove.
Other brands: find the equivalent control
Sony: Motionflow
On Sony televisions, look under Picture adjustments → Advanced → Motion for Motionflow. Sony’s help guidance recommends setting Motionflow to Off when you see ghosting or double images. The available options depend on the exact model, picture mode and signal, so a menu may not match another Sony set.
LG: TruMotion
LG calls its comparable system TruMotion. It smooths motion, but LG states that TruMotion cannot be set when Game mode is selected for the video mode. If the control is unavailable while a console is connected, temporarily check the picture mode rather than assuming the TV is defective.

Fix persistent motion blur in the right order
Use this sequence so you do not try to correct a source problem with the wrong TV control.
- Disable interpolation first. Set Picture Clarity, Auto Motion Plus, Motionflow, TruMotion or the equivalent to Off. Check whether the soap-opera look and double images disappear.
- Test the same scene from another source. Try a built-in streaming app, a broadcast channel and an external player or console. Picture settings are often stored separately for each input and picture mode.
- Confirm the selected picture mode. Movie, Filmmaker, Standard, HDR and Game modes can expose different controls. Record the setting for the mode and input that actually show the problem.
- Use a low custom blur value only if necessary. If Off removes the artificial look but leaves fast action too soft, add Blur Reduction in small increments while keeping Judder Reduction low.
- Test LED Clear Motion by itself. Toggle it off and on with a stationary camera shot followed by motion. Keep it off if you see flicker, reduced brightness or eye strain.
- Check the source frame rate and output. On a console or set-top box, verify that the selected resolution and refresh rate are supported and stable. A source that changes frame rate repeatedly can look uneven even with TV processing disabled.
- Inspect the signal path. Reseat the HDMI cable, try another certified cable and bypass an audio/video receiver or switch temporarily. If only one device remains blurry, its output or processing is the likely cause.
- Escalate when every source is affected. If blur or double images remain with all motion processing off on multiple inputs, use the manufacturer’s model-specific support instructions. A panel, backlight or source-device fault requires a different remedy than a motion setting.
Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
| What you see | Likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Everything looks unnaturally smooth, especially films | Motion interpolation is enabled. | Turn Picture Clarity or the equivalent Off. |
| Objects have a halo, bend or briefly split into two | The algorithm generated an incorrect intermediate frame. | Reduce Judder Reduction and Blur Reduction, or disable interpolation. |
| Slow pans judder after processing is disabled | Normal low-frame-rate film cadence is visible. | Use a small Judder Reduction value only if the trade-off is acceptable. |
| Sports look smeared while movies look fine | Source motion is fast and the original signal contains ordinary blur. | Try low Blur Reduction in a sports-specific picture mode. |
| Motion looks sharper but the screen flickers | LED Clear Motion or another black-frame/backlight option is active. | Turn that option Off and compare. |
| Only one app, input or HDR mode is affected | Settings are stored per source or mode, or the source is processing the image. | Check that source’s picture menu and test another device. |
| Motion controls are greyed out during console play | Game mode limits processing to reduce input latency. | Keep Game mode for responsiveness and adjust the console output instead. |
How to choose settings for common content
Films and scripted television
Start with all motion processing Off. This preserves the cadence selected by the director and avoids generated-frame artifacts. If a particular film has distracting judder in slow pans, use Custom with a small amount of Judder Reduction and no more Blur Reduction than needed. Recheck several scenes; a setting that hides judder in one shot may make another shot look artificial.
Live sports and news
Sports is the strongest case for modest smoothing. Begin with Custom and raise Blur Reduction gradually while watching a fast pan, a ball in flight and a player crossing a detailed background. Stop when clarity improves without halos or a plastic-looking field. Keep Judder Reduction low unless the broadcast itself has uneven cadence.
Console and PC gaming
Use Game mode when input response matters. Motion controls may disappear by design. Instead, verify the console or PC is sending the intended resolution and refresh rate, and look for a stable frame-rate mode in the game. If a setting is available without increasing latency, test it with a moving camera and fine text; do not judge only from a static menu.

Streaming apps
Streaming services can switch between film, television and live content, so one universal setting may not suit every title. Check whether the TV stores picture settings per app or per signal type. Compare the same title in the built-in app and on an external streamer to determine whether the difference is in the TV mode or the source device.
Important limits and expectations
- Turning off interpolation cannot restore detail that was never present in the source. Compression, a low camera shutter speed and ordinary LCD sample-and-hold blur can remain.
- QLED branding does not guarantee a particular motion processor, refresh rate or menu. Two models with the same panel branding can expose different controls.
- Firmware updates can rename, move or add options. Always use the instructions for your exact model and region.
- HDR, filmmaker-style modes and external inputs can have independent settings. A change made while watching one source may not affect another.
- There is no single universally correct setting. The best choice depends on whether you value cinematic cadence, sports clarity, gaming latency or freedom from flicker.
Practical starting presets
| Use case | Starting preset | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Films and prestige drama | Motion processing Off; LED Clear Motion Off. | Natural cadence, but normal film judder during slow pans. |
| Sports | Custom; low-to-moderate Blur Reduction; low Judder Reduction. | Halos around players, a warped background or an overly live-video appearance. |
| Competitive gaming | Game mode; motion processing left at the mode’s permitted setting. | Input delay, unstable frame rate and source-side blur. |
| Casual gaming or video playback | Start Off, then test a small Blur Reduction value if the source is visibly soft. | Generated-frame artifacts and any change in controller response. |
When the TV may need service
Settings are the likely cause when the symptom changes immediately after switching motion processing. Service becomes more plausible when the same blur, ghosting or double image appears on every input, in built-in apps and in menus, even with interpolation and LED Clear Motion disabled. Before contacting support, note the model number, firmware version, affected sources, picture mode and a repeatable scene. That information helps distinguish a source or cable issue from a display fault.
The Bottom Line
Start by turning Picture Clarity, Auto Motion Plus or the equivalent motion-smoothing control Off. If you need more fast-action clarity, use Custom with small Blur Reduction and low Judder Reduction, and treat LED Clear Motion as an optional test because it can flicker. Check each input and picture mode separately, keep Game mode for low latency, and investigate cables or source devices only after motion processing has been disabled across multiple sources.
