An ARK mod mismatch means the server and your game are not using the same mod files, versions, or load order. The reliable fix is to identify whether the server or the client is out of sync, update the affected side, verify the configuration, and reconnect only after downloads and restarts finish.
What an ARK mod mismatch error means
ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended validate mod information when a player connects. The server and client need the same mods, matching versions, and the same order. If one side has an older Workshop file, a missing mod, a damaged download, or a different configuration, the connection can be refused. Other symptoms include invisible creatures, missing structures, a forced-download loop, or a message that the server has a different mod version.

There is no single universal reset button. The correct repair depends on five questions:

- Is the server running Survival Evolved or Survival Ascended?
- Does every player see the error, or only one player?
- Does one mod fail, or does the entire mod list mismatch?
- Is the server self-hosted or controlled through a managed panel?
- Would resetting saved data be acceptable if configuration and files are already correct?
Determine which side is out of sync

Ask the server owner for the current mod list rather than relying on memory or an old screenshot. A subscription in Steam’s Workshop is not proof that the local files are current, and a server’s display name is not proof that its configuration loaded successfully.
Server-owner repair sequence for Survival Evolved
Perform these steps while the server is stopped or inaccessible. A managed panel may expose equivalent buttons instead of a shell; use its normal stop, update, file-edit, and restart controls.

1. Stop the server cleanly
Stop or restart it through the control panel or service script used to administer it. Do not edit configuration while the process is writing files. Wait until the panel reports that the process has exited before changing mods or settings.
2. Update and validate the dedicated server
For a SteamCMD installation of ARK: Survival Evolved, the ARK wiki documents this update and validation command:
app_update 376030 validateRun it in the SteamCMD session or update workflow that owns the server installation. Validation replaces missing or damaged server files; it does not by itself guarantee that every Workshop mod is current.
3. Update every Workshop mod used by the server
Update the complete mod set, not only the mod named in a player’s error. The official ARK documentation describes the -automanagedmods option and the [ModInstaller] section with ModIDS entries. These mechanisms download or maintain Workshop content, but the mods still have to be activated with the server’s active-mod setting.

If your provider has a “Mod IDs” field, enter the IDs there exactly as the provider documents. If you maintain files yourself, confirm that the server’s Workshop directory contains the updated content before starting the process again.
4. Correct the ActiveMods line
For Survival Evolved, open:
ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/GameUserSettings.iniThe exact root directory can differ by provider. Find the ActiveMods entry and use numeric Workshop IDs separated by commas, with no spaces and no trailing comma. Put the IDs in the load order required by the mod authors and the server’s existing setup.
ActiveMods=123456789,987654321,456789123Do not paste Workshop URLs, mod names, quotation marks, or a comma after the final ID. A correctly downloaded mod that is absent from ActiveMods is still inactive. Conversely, an ID in the line without corresponding files will fail at startup.
5. Start once and inspect the console or log
Restart the server and watch the startup output. oneSubnet recommends looking for a “Mod … loaded” message for each declared ID. Treat “Failed to load mod” as a failure signal rather than allowing players to test an incomplete startup. If an ID fails, stop the server and correct that mod before asking anyone to reconnect.
6. Reconnect only after the restart is complete
Tell players to join after the server has finished updating and restarted. Having some players connect during a partial update can leave different clients targeting different server states and makes the error harder to diagnose.
Server-owner repair sequence for Survival Ascended
Do not copy a Survival Evolved ActiveMods example into an Ascended installation. The managed-host guidance cited for the two editions uses ActiveModOverrides or the provider’s Mod IDs field for Survival Ascended. Use the setting exposed by your Ascended server software or hosting panel, then enter the numeric mod IDs in the syntax that software specifies.

The operational order remains the same: stop the server, update the dedicated installation, update every listed mod, verify the Ascended mod declaration, start the server, and check startup output for each mod. If a panel translates its Mod IDs field into ActiveModOverrides, edit the field rather than adding a second competing setting manually.

Player-side repair sequence
Use this sequence when the server owner confirms that the list and startup are correct, or when only your account is affected.
1. Obtain the exact server list
Ask for every mod ID and its order. Subscribe to each listed Workshop mod. An unsubscribed client can be blocked when the server attempts a forced download, according to oneSubnet’s guidance.
2. Exit ARK and Steam completely
Close ARK, then exit Steam rather than merely closing the game window. Workshop updates can be pending while the client is open. Reopen Steam and wait for all queued downloads or installations to finish before launching ARK.
3. Repair only the affected mod first
If the error names one mod, identify its Workshop ID and compare its update date or version with the server copy. Avoid deleting every local mod immediately; a targeted repair is faster and preserves working downloads.
4. Perform a clean redownload if the mismatch remains
- Exit ARK and Steam.
- Unsubscribe from the affected Workshop mod, or from the complete server list if several local files are suspect.
- Remove the corresponding local files under ARK’s
ShooterGame/Content/Modsdirectory. - Restart Steam and ARK.
- Subscribe again to the required mods and allow their installation to finish.
- Join the server only after the downloads have completed.
This unsubscribe-and-delete procedure is described in a Steam Community report as a way to force a clean, server-consistent download. That report is anecdotal: heavily modded servers may require several join attempts, and repeated attempts are not a guarantee of success. Let each download finish instead of repeatedly launching the game while files are still changing.

5. Check that the client is using the same order
Even with identical subscriptions, a client’s active list or a server browser’s cached information can differ from the owner’s current order. Compare the complete ordered list supplied by the owner, not just the number of subscribed items.
When the files and configuration look correct
Host Havoc Technical Support wrote on June 8, 2026 that ARK: Survival Evolved mod failures are “almost always” caused by one of three conditions: missing mod files, an incorrect ActiveMods setting, or old saved data rejecting the mods. Once the first two have been verified, treat the save as a separate troubleshooting branch.
Back up before touching saves
Stop the server and make independent copies of the world, map, tribe, and player save files. Keep the backup outside the live save directory and confirm that it can be restored. A save reset can be destructive; do not test it on the only copy of an established world.

Test whether the mod requires clean data
With a verified backup, investigate whether the newly changed or reintroduced mod expects a clean save. Host Havoc lists resetting saved data as a troubleshooting step, but that action can remove progress or make a rollback necessary. Use it only after the server files, Workshop content, edition-specific setting, IDs, and load order have all been checked.
Restore deliberately if the test fails
If a clean-data test does not resolve the error, stop the server and restore the backup rather than leaving players on an experimental world. Record which mod and configuration were changed so the next test alters one variable at a time.

A Steam Community user, ShaZZa, claimed on July 1, 2021 that a mismatch can occur when a mod author changes the mod’s UUID, which changes its version. That is a user report, not an official diagnosis. Use it as a reason to compare the actual Workshop ID and downloaded files, not as proof that every mismatch has that cause.

Common configuration mistakes
- Using names instead of IDs:
ActiveModsexpects numeric Workshop IDs, not display names. - Adding spaces or a trailing comma: keep the value as a clean comma-separated sequence.
- Declaring a mod that was never downloaded: activation cannot substitute for installation.
- Downloading a mod without activating it: installed Workshop content will not load unless the server’s active-mod setting includes it.
- Mixing edition instructions: Survival Evolved’s
ActiveModsrecipe does not automatically apply to Survival Ascended. - Restarting too early: let SteamCMD, the panel, and Workshop downloads finish before starting the server.
- Editing while the server is running: stop it first so the process does not overwrite the change.
- Clearing every client mod for a one-mod fault: compare the named mod first and minimize unnecessary downloads.
Preventing the next mismatch
- Keep a written, ordered mod list with numeric IDs for each server.
- After changing a mod, update the dedicated server and all Workshop content before inviting players back.
- Record whether the server is Evolved or Ascended beside its configuration instructions.
- Read startup output after every update and confirm that each declared mod reports as loaded.
- Tell players to reconnect only after the server owner announces that the restart and downloads are complete.
- Back up world and player saves before adding, removing, or substantially updating a mod.
- When possible, change one mod at a time so a failure identifies a specific update rather than an entire batch.
FAQ
Should I delete and redownload every ARK mod?
Not automatically. If one mod is named, compare that mod first and perform a targeted clean redownload. Clear the complete local mod set only when several files are stale or corrupted, and make sure the server’s list is confirmed before downloading everything again.
Why does subscribing to the Workshop items not fix the error?
Subscription controls what Steam can download; it does not correct the server’s active list, load order, failed server update, or an old save. Both ends must finish installing the same versions, and the server must successfully load them.
Is a different mod order really enough to block a connection?
Yes. The server and client are expected to use the same ordered set. Matching IDs with a different order can still produce a mismatch or incorrect loading behavior.
Can several failed join attempts repair the problem?
Sometimes a forced download completes on a later attempt, particularly on heavily modded servers, but the Steam report describing that behavior is anecdotal. Do not treat repeated attempts as a substitute for checking the server list, downloads, and logs.
When is resetting the save justified?
Only after the dedicated files, Workshop files, edition-specific configuration, IDs, order, and startup logs are correct, and only after you have a restorable backup. Old saved data can reject a mod, but resetting it may permanently remove progress if no backup exists.

What is the fastest way to tell whether the server or my PC is at fault?
If every player is rejected, begin with the server update, mod files, active-mod setting, and startup log. If only you are rejected while others connect, begin with Steam’s Workshop cache and a client-side redownload.
Which setting should I edit on an Ascended server?
Use ActiveModOverrides or the provider’s Mod IDs field for Survival Ascended. The ActiveMods example applies to Survival Evolved and should not be copied across editions.
What should I do if a mod loads successfully but the world still will not start?
Stop the server, back up the world and player saves, and investigate save compatibility. A clean-save test is a later step, not a replacement for validating files and configuration.
