Mixed-content warnings stop when every resource on an HTTPS WordPress page is also fetched over HTTPS. First identify the exact http:// request in your browser’s Developer Tools, test whether that URL works with https://, then correct the reference in WordPress, your theme, plugins, or the external service. Finish by purging caches and testing the site with the Console open. Do not change WordPress URL settings until the certificate, HTTPS virtual host, and redirect are working correctly.
Browsers treat HTTP requests inside an HTTPS page as a security boundary problem. Scripts, stylesheets, fonts, frames, and other active resources can be blocked; some images, audio, and video may be upgraded automatically, but that is only a temporary safety net. A missing padlock, broken layout, or non-working JavaScript usually means at least one URL still points to HTTP.

A page is mixed content when its main document loads through HTTPS but one or more subresources are requested through plain HTTP. For example, https://example.com/shop that loads http://cdn.example.net/app.js is mixed content. The browser must decide whether to upgrade, allow, or block that request.
HTTPS authenticates the connection and protects data in transit. If an HTTPS page imports an HTTP script, an attacker who can alter the unencrypted response could change the code that runs in the visitor’s browser. That is why browsers are particularly strict with active content. MDN documents the distinction between upgradeable and blockable mixed content in its mixed-content guidance.

Upgradeable versus blockable resources
- Usually blockable: JavaScript files, CSS stylesheets, web fonts, iframes, plug-in content, and other resources that can execute code or alter the page. A blocked script can disable menus, forms, analytics, carts, or checkout.
- Sometimes upgradeable: certain images, audio, and video requests. A browser may rewrite the request to HTTPS before sending it.
- Still unsafe to leave unfixed: auto-upgraded media can fail when the host has no HTTPS endpoint, and browser behavior can change. Correct the URL rather than relying on automatic upgrading.
Open the browser’s warning details to distinguish a blocked active resource from an upgraded media request. The same page can contain both kinds.
Before changing WordPress: verify HTTPS at the server
WordPress should use HTTPS only after the site’s certificate and server configuration are ready. Confirm all of the following first:
Recommended Free Tools
- The TLS certificate covers the exact hostname visitors use, including the preferred
wwwor non-wwwform. - The HTTPS virtual host (or hosting configuration) serves the site instead of a default page or redirect loop.
- Opening the canonical HTTPS URL works in a private browser window.
- HTTP requests redirect to the chosen HTTPS URL without repeated hops or a loop.
- Login, password-reset, and administrator pages work over HTTPS.
WordPress explains the security benefits and configuration requirements in its HTTPS administration documentation. If HTTPS itself is broken, fix the certificate, web server, load balancer, or hosting configuration before editing database URLs.
Find the exact request that causes the warning
Do not guess which plugin is responsible. The browser identifies the URL and resource type that generated the warning.
- Open the affected page in a current browser.
- Open Developer Tools (usually with
F12orCtrl/Cmd+Shift+I). - Select the Console tab and reload the page. Read each mixed-content message and copy the complete
http://URL. - Open the Network tab, reload again, and filter for
http://or search by the hostname. Record whether the request is a script, stylesheet, font, image, frame, media file, API call, or form target. - Note the page, template, and feature where it appears. A URL in a header widget may affect every page, while one in a post affects only that content.
MDN’s mixed-content documentation recommends locating the offending request and testing its HTTPS form. Copying the URL prevents a broad, risky replacement from changing an unrelated string.
Test the HTTPS version
Change only the scheme in a new tab: replace http:// with https:// while keeping the hostname, path, query string, and file name. Interpret the result as follows:

- It loads the expected resource: the provider supports HTTPS. Update the WordPress reference to the HTTPS URL.
- It redirects to HTTPS and loads: use the final HTTPS URL where practical, then verify that the redirect does not create a performance or policy problem.
- The certificate is invalid, the host times out, or the file is missing: treat the resource as HTTP-only or unavailable. Ask the provider for an HTTPS endpoint, replace it with an equivalent HTTPS-capable resource, or remove the dependency.
- The URL works directly but fails on the page: inspect redirects, hotlink protection, credentials, content-security policies, and the page’s cache. The browser console will usually show the next error.
Correct WordPress’s canonical URLs
Once HTTPS works at the server, update the two core URL settings:
- Back up the database and files, and preferably perform the change on a staging copy first.
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Settings > General.
- Change WordPress Address (URL) to the canonical HTTPS URL.
- Change Site Address (URL) to the same HTTPS URL unless your deliberate installation architecture requires a different, documented value.
- Save the changes, sign in again if prompted, and open the front end in a private window.
These settings control links WordPress generates, but they do not rewrite every old URL stored in content, theme files, plugin options, or cached assets. A site can have correct settings and still produce mixed content from a single hard-coded reference.
Replace hard-coded HTTP references safely
Search every place that can emit a URL. Make the narrowest change that fixes the identified resource, then expand the check only when evidence shows more occurrences.
Posts, pages, and reusable content
Edit the affected post, page, reusable block, navigation menu, and widget. Check image URLs, background images, embeds, buttons, custom HTML blocks, and links inserted by a visual builder. Re-selecting an image from the Media Library can replace an old absolute URL, but inspect the resulting HTML when the editor continues to output HTTP.

Search the active theme and child theme for http://, including CSS url() declarations, JavaScript imports, font files, and inline scripts. Prefer WordPress enqueue functions and generated URLs over hard-coded schemes. Edit a child theme or a version-controlled deployment rather than modifying a parent theme that updates automatically.
Plugins and widgets
Review plugin settings for analytics, maps, chat, video, payment forms, fonts, and custom code. Check widget fields and block settings as well. Update the plugin if its current release has corrected an HTTP endpoint; otherwise use the provider’s HTTPS URL or remove the feature.

Media metadata and database records
Old attachment metadata, serialized options, builder data, and custom fields can contain absolute HTTP URLs even when the visible editor looks correct. Take a fresh database backup and use a search-and-replace method that understands serialized data. Test on staging first, review the proposed replacements, and limit the search to the old site URL or the specific affected hostname. Never replace every occurrence of the text http:// indiscriminately: it can alter external services, documentation, code samples, or values that must not change.
After a controlled replacement, inspect representative content and verify that serialized plugin settings still load. If a tool cannot safely process serialized fields, do not run it against production; ask the tool’s documentation or support team for a serialization-safe procedure.
Handle third-party resources
External resources are a common reason a site remains mixed after first-party URLs are fixed. For each external hostname:
- Test the exact file or endpoint over HTTPS.
- Check the provider’s current embed or installation instructions for an HTTPS URL.
- Replace the old URL in the plugin, widget, theme, or content field that generated it.
- If no HTTPS version exists, remove the resource or choose an equivalent service that serves it over HTTPS.
Do not keep HTTP scripts, stylesheets, fonts, frames, or API calls on an HTTPS page. A provider’s redirect from HTTP to HTTPS may appear to work, but the initial insecure request can still trigger a warning and adds an avoidable dependency. For embedded frames, the frame’s own document and every resource it loads must also be HTTPS; changing only the parent page cannot repair an HTTP-only embed.
Use Content-Security-Policy only as a transition control
The upgrade-insecure-requests directive tells the browser to rewrite HTTP resource URLs to HTTPS before making the request. A server can send it as a response header:
Content-Security-Policy: upgrade-insecure-requests
MDN describes this directive in its CSP documentation. It cannot create an HTTPS endpoint. If a host is HTTP-only, the rewritten request fails, so scripts, fonts, media, or frames may disappear. Use the directive to contain legacy references while you correct their source, not as a substitute for editing WordPress URLs.

Deploy the header carefully when a CDN, reverse proxy, web server, and WordPress security plugin can all add headers. Check the response headers in Developer Tools and test login, administration, forms, scripts, and embedded content after enabling it. Remove or reassess the transition policy after permanent URL corrections are complete.
Purge caches and proxy layers
WordPress page caches, object caches, CDN caches, reverse proxies, browser caches, and minification bundles can continue serving HTML or CSS containing the old scheme. Purge the relevant layers after changing URLs:
- Clear the WordPress caching or optimization plugin.
- Purge the CDN and reverse-proxy cache, including cached HTML and generated CSS or JavaScript bundles.
- Regenerate combined or minified assets if the optimization system provides that action.
- Use a private browser window or a hard reload so an old browser cache does not hide the result.
If the warning returns only on one edge location or after a delay, compare response headers and cache age. Confirm that the origin serves the corrected HTML before purging the edge again.
Verify the repair site-wide
A clean home page does not prove that checkout, account pages, or older posts are clean. Verify in increasing scope:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Reload the original page with Developer Tools open. The Console should contain no mixed-content errors, and Network should show no unintended
http://requests. - Test JavaScript interactions such as menus, search, forms, sliders, modal dialogs, and any feature supplied by the resource you changed.
- Submit representative contact, login, account, and checkout forms. Confirm that their action URLs and API calls remain HTTPS.
- Open pages with different templates: a post, page, archive, media-heavy page, custom landing page, and an administrator preview.
- Test embedded media, frames, fonts, and images. A broken media item can indicate an HTTP-only host even when the Console no longer reports a blocked script.
- Run a crawler that checks rendered pages and source HTML for HTTP references. Include authenticated or excluded areas when your crawler supports them.
- Open Tools > Site Health in WordPress and review the available diagnostics. The Site Health screen documentation explains the tests and status information.
Repeat the crawl after cache expiry or deployment if your site has multiple origins. Record the URL, resource type, generating component, fix, and verification result so a future theme or plugin update can be checked quickly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the remediation method by scope and risk
| Situation | Best first method | Why | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| One image or link in a known post | Edit the content manually | Small, transparent change with an easy visual check | Other templates may still contain the same URL |
| A few references in a theme, widget, or plugin | Correct the generating setting or source file | Prevents the component from recreating the error | Theme updates can overwrite direct edits |
| Many first-party URLs after a domain-wide HTTPS move | Backup, staging, and a serialization-safe database replacement | Consistent site-wide correction | Incorrect scope can damage serialized data or unrelated URLs |
| An external resource with a working HTTPS endpoint | Use the provider’s HTTPS URL | Preserves the feature without an insecure request | Plugin settings or cached bundles may still emit the old URL |
| An HTTP-only external resource | Replace or remove it | There is no secure URL for the browser to load | Removing a dependency may change page functionality |
| Legacy references during a controlled migration | Temporary CSP upgrade-insecure-requests plus permanent edits |
Contains upgradeable references while work proceeds | HTTP-only endpoints fail and can hide incomplete migration |
Staging and backups improve reversibility. Manual edits provide the tightest scope; a database operation provides coverage but carries more operational risk. Browser checks validate one rendered page, while crawlers and continuous-integration checks can cover many URLs.

Troubleshoot the most common symptoms
The padlock is missing, but the page looks normal
Inspect the Console and Network panel rather than assuming the certificate failed. An image, font, tracking pixel, or favicon can trigger a warning without visibly changing the layout. Correct the reported URL, purge caches, and reload in a private window.
The layout is broken or buttons do nothing
Look first for blocked CSS, JavaScript, fonts, or API requests. Test each URL over HTTPS and update the component that generated it. A page-cache purge is required if the corrected URL is inside generated CSS or JavaScript.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn image loads for some visitors but not others
One browser may auto-upgrade the image while another blocks it, or the HTTPS host may serve a different response by region or cache. Replace the source URL with a verified HTTPS URL and test from a clean session.
The HTTPS URL returns a certificate or 404 error
The external host is not ready for secure delivery at that path. Do not force the scheme with CSP. Contact the provider, select a different HTTPS-capable file, self-host content when licensing permits, or remove the feature.
The warning returns after a plugin or theme update
Re-run the Console and Network investigation to identify the new URL. Check the component’s settings and changelog, update to a release that supports HTTPS, or report the exact request to its developer. Keep a crawler check in deployment or maintenance routines.
WordPress redirects repeatedly after changing the URLs
Check that the canonical hostname, HTTPS virtual host, reverse-proxy scheme, and WordPress URL settings agree. A proxy that fails to pass the original HTTPS scheme can make WordPress believe every request is HTTP. Correct that server or proxy setting before attempting more database replacements.

- Use HTTPS canonical URLs in new content, custom fields, theme code, and plugin configuration.
- Prefer WordPress-generated URLs and enqueue functions over hard-coded schemes.
- Review third-party embeds before publishing and reject providers that offer only HTTP delivery.
- Run a rendered-page crawl after major theme, plugin, CDN, or domain changes.
- Keep database and file backups, and test broad URL migrations on staging.
- Monitor the browser Console on key templates after cache regeneration and deployments.
- Use CSP upgrading only as a controlled migration aid, then remove the underlying HTTP references.
The durable solution is simple but strict: serve every page and every dependency through HTTPS. As MDN states, “The best strategy to avoid issues with mixed content is to serve all the content as HTTPS.”
