Quiet rear speakers or a subdued subwoofer does not necessarily mean your Sony BRAVIA Theatre hardware has failed. The source may contain little surround or bass information, the sound field may be disabled, Night mode may be reducing impact, calibration may be incomplete, or a wireless link may be unstable. Identify the exact Theatre model and speaker connection first, then use the built-in test tone or demo to separate a content issue from a configuration or hardware problem.

Start by identifying the exact system and connection

Sony uses different menus and controls across BRAVIA Theatre products. Before following a button sequence, record the model number from the soundbar, control box, or system information screen. Examples covered by Sony’s support instructions include Theatre Quad (HT-A9M2), Theatre Bar 9 (HT-A9000), Bar 8 (HT-A8000), Bar 7 (HT-A7100), Theatre Trio (HT-A8), Theatre System 6 (HT-S60), HT-S2000, HT-A7000, HT-A5000, and HT-A3000.

Also establish how the speakers are connected:

  • System-linked speakers: the optional rear speakers and subwoofer pair with the Theatre bar or control unit.
  • Direct-to-TV Wi-Fi speakers: on some supported BRAVIA configurations, optional speakers connect to the television rather than to the Theatre system.

That distinction changes the relevant power, output, and wireless settings. Do not assume that a menu shown for one model exists on another; Sony specifically directs owners to the model’s Help Guide for paths that are not shared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down whether the problem affects one rear speaker, both rears, the subwoofer, or every optional speaker. Note whether the symptom is silence, very low level, crackling, delay, or intermittent dropouts. Those observations make the later test results more useful and prevent you from treating a wireless fault like a sound-field preference.

Determine whether the problem follows the program

Rear channels are not continuously as loud as the front channels. Sony describes the rear speaker as reproducing a multichannel surround signal or being virtually processed from two-channel sound. A film, show, game, or music track with little ambient information can therefore produce very little rear output. A dialogue-heavy stereo source may also leave the rears almost silent even when the system is working correctly.

The same principle applies to bass. A subwoofer can be operating normally while contributing little audible output when the program contains few low frequencies. Test more than one source before changing settings, and include a title known to contain movement, effects, or music with substantial low-frequency content.

Comparison What you may hear What it tells you
Multichannel or surround-rich content Distinct ambient effects and directional sounds from the rear speakers; stronger bass on effects and music Useful for checking whether the complete mix reaches the optional speakers
Two-channel, dialogue-heavy, or low-bass content Quiet rears and a restrained subwoofer contribution Does not by itself prove a speaker or wireless fault
Built-in test tone or demo audio A deliberately generated signal from each speaker or a sample program Provides a repeatable check independent of the program being watched

If the built-in test works but ordinary content remains quiet, investigate the source and sound-field combination. If the test does not reach a speaker, continue with level, optimization, power, and wireless checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the same short scene when comparing settings. Changing from a surround-rich action sequence to a quiet interview can make a perfectly successful adjustment appear ineffective. If possible, compare one multichannel title, one ordinary stereo or dialogue source, and the system’s own test signal.

Restore rear-speaker output in order

1. Raise the rear level

On compatible models, open the BRAVIA Connect app and increase Rear level. Other Theatre systems provide rear-speaker volume buttons on the remote. Make a small adjustment, replay the same surround-rich passage, and avoid judging the change from a different scene or source.

If the rear level was already high, leave it there while performing the remaining checks. Repeatedly increasing the level cannot restore a speaker that is powered off, unpaired, or blocked by a wireless problem.

2. Turn Night mode off

Night mode is intended to reduce loudness and dynamic contrast for quiet listening. If it is enabled, switch it off and retest the same material. This is particularly important when both the rears and subwoofer sound unusually restrained, because a dynamic-range setting can make the entire presentation seem less energetic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Complete Sound Field Optimization

Sound Field Optimization measures the room and speaker arrangement on models that support it. Run it after the speakers are in their normal listening positions and powered on. Do not move a speaker halfway through the process and then rely on the old result; the measurement is intended for the arrangement in which you actually listen.

For Theatre Quad (HT-A9M2), Theatre Bar 9 (HT-A9000), Bar 8 (HT-A8000), Bar 7 (HT-A7100), and Theatre Trio (HT-A8), Sony gives this BRAVIA Connect path:

  1. Open BRAVIA Connect.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Open Sound Settings.
  4. Select Sound Field Optimization.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts until the process finishes.

On other supported models, use the remote:

  1. Press HOME.
  2. Choose Setup.
  3. Open Advanced Settings.
  4. Select Speaker Settings.
  5. Choose Sound Field Optimization.

Theatre System 6 (HT-S60) does not have a Sound Field Optimization setting. Do not treat its missing menu as a fault.

4. Run a test tone or output check

A test signal is the fastest way to determine whether the speaker can produce sound outside the program you are watching. On the newer Theatre models listed above, Sony places the check in BRAVIA Connect at Settings → Sound Settings → Sound Output Check. Start the check and listen to each rear speaker separately if the app offers individual selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Theatre System 6, HT-S2000, and other models use different routes or labels. Use the model-specific Help Guide rather than applying the BRAVIA Connect path universally. A test tone that reaches the speaker confirms that its amplifier and basic link can produce audio; it does not guarantee that every source or sound field will use that speaker.

Stand in the normal listening position and listen for each channel in turn. A very quiet test signal can be mistaken for silence, so pause other playback and keep the room reasonably quiet. Record which speaker responds and whether the sound is clean, intermittent, or distorted.

5. Select a sound field that uses the rears

When the test signal works but normal playback does not, review the sound-field setting for the source:

  • On compatible models, select Sound Field in BRAVIA Connect.
  • On HT-A7000, use Immersive Audio Enhancement when you want processing that expands suitable content.
  • On HT-A5000 and HT-A3000, use Sound Field Effect.
  • On Theatre System 6, Multi Stereo can send stereo content to multiple speakers.

Some formats, including certain Dolby Atmos sources, can force particular processing choices. If an option is unavailable or changes by itself, check the source format and the model’s Help Guide instead of repeatedly selecting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use the presence of a Dolby Atmos label as a guarantee that every moment will be loud in the rears. The mix still determines what is assigned to each channel, and quiet scenes can remain quiet even with a surround-capable format.

Fix weak subwoofer output

First rule out a low-bass source

Compare a program with obvious music, impacts, or other low-frequency material against the source that sounded weak. Streaming services, broadcast channels, dialogue scenes, and some music mixes can contain substantially less bass. A quiet contribution on one title is not proof that the subwoofer is defective.

Optimize supported systems

For HT-A7000, HT-A5000, and HT-A3000, Sony recommends completing Sound Field Optimization. Use the model’s menu path described earlier, or the exact route in its Help Guide if the labels differ. Run the process with the subwoofer powered and in its usual position.

Adjust the subwoofer level where the model provides it

For HT-S2000, Sony identifies this BRAVIA Connect route:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Sound Settings.
  3. Select Speaker position and volume level settings.
  4. Open Volume level.
  5. Increase the subwoofer level and replay the same bass-rich passage.

Menu names and controls differ on other products. Confirm the exact model before changing a setting; do not assume that the HT-S2000 path applies to every BRAVIA Theatre system.

Change one control at a time and listen again. If you raise both the master volume and subwoofer level together, you cannot tell which adjustment changed the result. Also check that the subwoofer has not been switched off at its own power control before judging its level.

Use a test signal or demo

Play the system’s built-in test tone or demo music while standing where the subwoofer’s output is easy to hear. If the demo produces bass but a particular program does not, the source mix is the more likely explanation. If the demo is also silent, check power and wireless status before concluding that the driver has failed.

Resolve wireless dropouts, crackling, or intermittent bass

A wireless link problem can affect rear sound, bass, or both. Symptoms include output that cuts in and out, noise, delayed sound, or a speaker that works only when it is close to the bar or control unit. A speaker that is consistently quiet is not automatically wireless-related; use the test tone to distinguish low program content from an unstable link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this physical checklist

  • Confirm that every rear speaker and the subwoofer is switched on and has power.
  • Remove obstacles between the Theatre bar or control unit and the optional speakers.
  • Move the system away from devices that emit electromagnetic waves.
  • Temporarily bring the bar and optional speaker closer together to see whether reliability improves.

A closer test is diagnostic, not necessarily the final placement. If the connection becomes stable nearby, interference, distance, or obstruction is more likely than a failed speaker. Restore the intended positions one change at a time so you can identify what caused the improvement.

Prefer a stable wireless connection

On supported models, set wireless playback quality to Priority on Stable Connection. The setting may appear in the Theatre system’s wireless or network-related audio options. Supported BRAVIA Connect and Home Entertainment Connect models provide a corresponding wireless-connection optimization setting in the app.

This option favors reliability over the alternative wireless quality mode. It is most useful when audio is cutting out or becoming noisy; it cannot add surround information that is absent from the source.

Check RF or wireless-channel controls

Systems that expose an RF Channel setting can sometimes recover after the channel is renegotiated. Sony’s guidance is to toggle RF Channel off and back on; if the symptom remains, try leaving it off. Newer models may instead use their own Wireless Channel controls. Because the labels and available choices vary, use the Help Guide for the exact model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After changing a channel or connection-quality option, replay the same test tone and the same surround-rich passage. This avoids mistaking a different program mix for a wireless improvement. If the symptom changes when you move a nearby wireless device or obstruction, note that detail for Sony support.

Branch: speakers connected directly to the BRAVIA TV

Some supported configurations pair optional speakers to the BRAVIA television over Wi-Fi instead of linking them through the Theatre bar or system. In that arrangement, a Theatre-system adjustment alone may not restore output.

  1. Verify that the optional speaker is powered on.
  2. Open the BRAVIA Connect remote screen or the TV’s Quick Settings.
  3. Enable the TV’s wireless-speaker audio output option.
  4. If a subwoofer is also connected, verify its power because rear-speaker audio may route through that subwoofer in this configuration.
  5. Replay a source that actually contains surround information.

Rear output can still vary with the source, even after the TV output option is enabled. If the speaker is visible in the TV settings but silent during the built-in check, consult the TV and speaker Help Guides for pairing and channel-specific instructions.

Do not apply system-linked speaker instructions to a direct-to-TV setup without checking the connection screen first. The TV may control whether wireless-speaker output is enabled, while the Theatre bar controls other sound-field functions.

A compact troubleshooting sequence

  1. Identify the exact BRAVIA Theatre model and whether the optional speakers link to the Theatre system or directly to the TV.
  2. Test a known surround-rich, bass-rich source and note whether the symptom occurs everywhere or only in one program.
  3. Raise Rear level where available and turn Night mode off.
  4. Run Sound Field Optimization if the model supports it.
  5. Run the correct test tone, Sound Output Check, or demo for the model.
  6. If the test works, select the appropriate surround processing mode and inspect the source format.
  7. For weak bass, adjust the supported subwoofer level and verify the result with demo audio.
  8. For dropouts or noise, restore power, clear obstructions, reduce electromagnetic interference, try a closer placement, and select Priority on Stable Connection where available.
  9. Review RF Channel or Wireless Channel controls using the model’s Help Guide.
  10. For direct-to-TV Wi-Fi speakers, enable wireless-speaker audio output in the TV or BRAVIA Connect controls and check the subwoofer’s power.

Sony’s rear-speaker support article, last modified June 7, 2026, emphasizes that rear output depends on the multichannel source or virtual processing of two-channel sound. Applying that principle before replacing hardware prevents a normal, content-dependent behavior from being mistaken for a fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Sony BRAVIA Theatre rear speakers so quiet?

Rear speakers reproduce assigned surround channels or virtual processing, not a constant full-volume signal. Test a surround-rich source, raise Rear level, turn Night mode off, and run the model’s test tone. If the test is clear, the quiet program may simply contain little rear-channel information.

How can I tell whether the subwoofer is working?

Play the built-in test tone or demo music and compare it with a bass-rich film, game, or music track. Bass that appears in the demo but not in one program usually reflects the source mix. If the demo is silent, check power, wireless placement, connection-quality settings, and the model’s subwoofer level.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Does every BRAVIA Theatre system have Sound Field Optimization?

No. Sony lists it for models including Theatre Quad (HT-A9M2), Theatre Bar 9 (HT-A9000), Bar 8 (HT-A8000), Bar 7 (HT-A7100), and Theatre Trio (HT-A8), among others. Theatre System 6 (HT-S60) does not have that setting, so its absence is not a fault.

Why can’t I find the Sound Output Check menu?

The BRAVIA Connect path Settings → Sound Settings → Sound Output Check applies to newer listed Theatre models. Theatre System 6, HT-S2000, and other systems use different routes or labels. Use the exact model’s Help Guide instead of assuming the same app menu exists.

Should I turn on Multi Stereo?

Multi Stereo on Theatre System 6 can send stereo content to multiple speakers. Other products use different controls, such as Sound Field, Immersive Audio Enhancement, or Sound Field Effect. Choose the control documented for your model and remember that some source formats can force their own processing.

What should I do if rear audio cuts in and out?

Confirm power, remove obstacles, move the system away from devices that emit electromagnetic waves, and temporarily bring the bar and optional speaker closer together. On supported models, select Priority on Stable Connection and review RF Channel or Wireless Channel settings in the model’s Help Guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

My speakers connect directly to the BRAVIA TV. Which setting matters?

Verify the speaker is powered on, then enable wireless-speaker audio output from the BRAVIA Connect remote screen or the TV’s Quick Settings. If a subwoofer is also connected, check its power because rear-speaker audio may route through it. Source content still determines how much rear sound you hear.

When should I contact Sony instead of changing more settings?

Contact Sony after the model-specific test or demo remains silent or intermittent despite confirmed power, level checks, optimization where supported, and wireless troubleshooting. Provide the model number, connection method, affected speaker, settings changed, and test result. Do not buy replacement components until compatibility and the failed part are established.

The Bottom Line

Start with the source, not the hardware: compare surround-rich and bass-rich content, then run the Theatre system’s own test signal. Raise the appropriate levels, disable Night mode, optimize supported models, and troubleshoot wireless placement or channel settings. If the test works, the behavior is usually content or sound-field related; if it fails consistently, use the exact model’s Help Guide and Sony support before replacing equipment.
