If GTA 6 has dialogue and sound effects but no radio or music, first check the in-game station and music controls, then test the output device and speaker configuration. A stereo-versus-surround mismatch can send radio audio to a center channel you do not have. On Xbox, temporarily leaving Party Chat is also worth testing because Rockstar documented licensed-music suppression in a previous GTA title. Rockstar’s support index had not published a GTA VI-specific missing-radio article as of October 16, 2026, so these steps are documented audio checks and cross-title precedents—not a confirmed GTA VI bug fix.
What is—and is not—confirmed about silent radio in GTA 6
Rockstar’s GTA VI support index currently lists platform, purchase, pre-order and album-support information, but it does not list a dedicated article for missing radio audio or music playback. That means there is no published GTA VI-specific cause, universal fix or official statement that a particular platform is affected.
The troubleshooting below uses two kinds of evidence. The first is directly applicable audio isolation: checking the station, volume, output device and speaker layout. The second consists of Rockstar explanations for earlier games. Those older cases can reveal what to test, but they do not prove that GTA 6 has the same defect.

The pattern of the failure determines which check is most informative. Use this table as a starting point rather than assuming every silent-radio problem has the same cause.

Work through the fixes in order
1. Check the radio station and in-game music controls
- Open GTA 6’s audio settings and confirm the music or radio volume has not been reduced to zero.
- Confirm that radio audio is not muted.
- While travelling in a vehicle, switch to another station and then back again. Rockstar’s earlier radio guidance specifically recommends changing stations and making sure a station is selected.
- Test more than one vehicle or situation if possible. This helps distinguish a station-selection state from a wider music problem.
Rockstar has not published the exact GTA VI menu labels or control layout in the support material available as of October 16, 2026. Treat the names above as functions to locate, not guaranteed word-for-word labels.
2. Verify where the console or PC is sending sound
Check the complete path from the game to your ears: the selected console or PC output, the television or receiver input, the speaker or soundbar input, and any connected headset. Make sure the receiving device is not muted and that its volume is high enough to hear other content.
If effects and dialogue are audible but music is not, connect a different output temporarily. For example, compare the television speakers with a stereo headset, or compare the headset with the receiver. If radio returns on the alternate device, the game is generating at least some audio and the original output path needs attention.
On a computer, also check the operating system’s active playback device. A game can be directed to a monitor, USB audio interface, controller headset or another device while you are listening elsewhere. Select the device physically connected to your speakers or headset before testing again.

3. Match stereo and surround settings to the hardware
A channel mismatch is one of the most concrete explanations for “effects work, music does not.” In a Rockstar support explanation for a documented Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas case, radio music is sent to the center speaker when a PC is configured for 5.1 or greater surround sound. Rockstar states: “If there are only 2 speakers then there is no channel through which the music can be heard.”
Therefore, if you physically have two speakers, configure the computer for stereo rather than 5.1, 7.1 or another surround layout. If you do have a surround system, verify that the center speaker is connected, powered and assigned correctly. A receiver set to a different input or a missing center-channel cable can make music appear to vanish while other channels remain audible.
Use the same principle on a console: choose the output mode that corresponds to the equipment actually connected. Do not select a surround layout merely because the television, receiver or headset advertises surround processing. After changing the mode, retest radio audio with the same station and vehicle so the comparison is meaningful.

4. Update and verify PC audio drivers
For PC players, Rockstar says missing audio can involve the audio drivers, audio device or sound device. Install the current supported driver for the sound hardware, then confirm that Windows and the game are using that device. If you recently changed a graphics card, USB headset, monitor, motherboard or receiver, recheck the default playback device because Windows may have switched it.

Rockstar explicitly cautions: “If you only have stereo speakers do not set your Windows speaker settings to 5.1.” The setting must describe the speakers attached now, not a system you might connect later. Reopen the game after changing the Windows speaker layout and test radio playback again.
- Two physical speakers or a conventional stereo headset: select stereo.
- A working surround system with a connected center speaker: select the matching surround layout.
- A USB or wireless headset: select that headset as the active playback device and use its actual channel mode.
If the driver utility offers its own surround virtualization, avoid changing several layers at once. First establish a plain stereo or correctly wired surround output, then test GTA 6 before enabling additional processing.
5. Test Xbox Party Chat—but label the result correctly
Rockstar previously acknowledged an Xbox Series X|S problem in GTA V/Online in which licensed in-game music could not be heard while players were in Party Chat. Its notice said the issue was under investigation. That is a GTA V precedent, not a confirmed GTA VI defect.
Even so, the test is quick and reversible:
- Leave the Xbox Party Chat session completely.
- Close and restart the game.
- Enter a vehicle, select a station and check whether licensed music returns.
- If the result changes, record that Party Chat state when reporting the issue; do not treat it as proof that all GTA 6 Xbox players have the same bug.
If leaving Party Chat makes no difference, continue with the output and channel checks rather than repeatedly changing chat settings.

6. Use a stereo headset as an isolation test
A stereo gaming headset is useful because it bypasses the television, receiver and speaker wiring. Connect one, select it as the active output and test the same radio station. This does not mean GTA 6 requires a particular headset. It simply gives you a second, known two-channel path.
- Radio works through the headset: inspect the original speakers, receiver input, center-channel connection and stereo/surround selection.
- Radio is still missing through the headset: return to the in-game music controls, station selection, platform chat state and PC driver checks.
- All audio disappears through both: focus on the selected output device, mute state and system-level audio configuration.
Platform-specific decision paths
PlayStation
Start with the game’s station and music controls, then verify that the console is outputting to the television, receiver or headset you are actually using. If you normally use a receiver or soundbar, test the television’s built-in speakers or a stereo headset. A change in result points to the external audio path or its channel configuration; no change points back to the game settings or another platform state.
Xbox
Perform the same station, volume and output checks, then run the Party Chat test described above. Keep the platform and chat state in your notes. Rockstar’s documented Party Chat behavior concerns GTA V/Online on Xbox Series X|S, so it should be reported as a comparison if it appears relevant—not as an established GTA VI explanation.
PC
PC troubleshooting has the additional driver and speaker-layout requirements. Confirm the active Windows playback device, install a current supported driver, and set Windows to the number of channels your physical speakers provide. A stereo setup configured as 5.1 is specifically discouraged by Rockstar because radio can be routed to a center channel that does not exist.

What to record before contacting support
If none of the checks restores music, make the problem reproducible before opening a support request through Rockstar’s GTA VI support portal. Include:
- Platform and, on PC, the audio hardware and driver version.
- Whether dialogue, effects and other non-music sounds are audible.
- The connected output: television speakers, receiver, soundbar, wired headset, wireless headset or another device.
- The configured channel mode, such as stereo or surround.
- Whether Xbox Party Chat was active during the test.
- The in-game volume, mute and station checks you completed.
- Whether changing to a different output or stereo headset changed the result.
These details let support distinguish a radio-only symptom from a complete output failure and identify whether the issue follows the game, the platform or one audio path. Do not describe the older San Andreas or GTA V behavior as a confirmed GTA VI diagnosis; identify it as a comparison that guided your tests.
Common mistakes that make the problem look worse
- Assuming effects prove every channel is working: effects and dialogue can remain audible even when music is routed elsewhere.
- Choosing 5.1 for two speakers: this can place radio on an unavailable center channel.
- Changing several settings without recording them: make one change, retest the same station and note the result.
- Treating an old-title workaround as a GTA VI patch: Rockstar has not published a GTA VI-specific missing-radio article in the reviewed support index.
- Testing only one output: a headset-versus-speaker comparison is often the fastest way to separate a game setting from hardware routing.
Bottom line
Begin with station selection, radio/music volume and mute status. Then verify the active output and match stereo or surround settings to the speakers you actually own. On PC, update the audio driver and never configure stereo speakers as 5.1. On Xbox, leave Party Chat and restart once as a clearly labeled GTA V precedent test. If the symptom survives an alternate output and these checks, document the exact platform, hardware, channel mode and results and send them to Rockstar Support; there is no published GTA VI-specific workaround to apply with confidence as of October 16, 2026.
