If Metaphor: ReFantazio suddenly has no music, very quiet audio, or complete silence, first update the game and check the game’s Master Volume against your computer’s output volume. On Windows PC and Steam, ATLUS West says patch 1.03 increased Master Volume and advises lowering the computer volume before launching, then readjusting the in-game setting. If sound disappears while you are playing, reselecting the audio output in Sound Settings is a player-reported workaround, not a guaranteed official fix.
The right next step depends on what disappeared: all audio, only music, dialogue, or effects; whether the problem starts at launch or mid-session; and whether you are on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox. Use the symptom-based checks below rather than assuming every audio fault has the same cause.
Identify what “missing music” means in your game
Before changing settings, listen for a few seconds in a location where music normally plays and classify the failure. This prevents you from treating a volume-balance problem as a complete audio failure.

Also note exactly when the fault occurs. Audio that is silent immediately after startup points you toward volume and output checks. Audio that cuts out after changing areas, opening a menu, or playing for a while is better treated as an in-session loss until proven otherwise.

Run this recovery sequence first
These steps are ordered from the least disruptive checks to the more specific workaround. Stop when the music returns, and record which step worked if the problem comes back.
- Update the game. On PC, confirm that Windows PC or Steam has installed the current update offered for your copy. ATLUS West’s documented PC audio change was included in patch 1.03. The note also references console patch 1.04, but it does not provide the same audio instructions for consoles.
- Lower the computer’s output volume before launching on PC. ATLUS West specifically advised turning down the computer volume before startup after the Master Volume change. This avoids beginning with an unexpectedly loud signal while you test the new balance.
- Launch the game and open its audio settings. Set the in-game Master Volume to a clearly audible level, then adjust the computer volume upward or downward to a comfortable level. The patch note’s recommendation is to make the final adjustment with the in-game Master Volume after reducing the computer level.
- Check that the game is not muted outside the game. Inspect the active output device and the application volume in your operating system’s sound controls. If you use headphones, a monitor, a television, or an external interface, make sure that device is the one currently receiving sound.
- Test menu and gameplay audio separately. Listen for menu clicks, dialogue, effects, and music. If every category is silent, continue with output checks. If only music is missing, keep the issue classified as a balance or category problem rather than reporting it as total silence.
- If audio vanished during play, reselect the output. Open the game’s Sound Settings, choose the intended audio output again, and return to the game. A Steam community user reported that this restored sound after it disappeared. This is an individual workaround; it has not been established as a universal or officially verified repair.
- Check the language setting only when the symptom is language-related. SEGA’s FAQ says the text/audio language can be changed from the pause menu whenever that menu is available. Changing language can correct an unexpected voice language, but the FAQ does not say that it restores missing music.
- Restart after changing settings. Close the game normally and start it again after selecting the output and volume. A restart gives you a clean test and tells you whether the change persists beyond the current session.
PC: understand the Master Volume change in patch 1.03
ATLUS West documented a specific audio-balance change for Windows PC and Steam: PC patch 1.03 increased the game’s Master Volume. The accompanying instruction was to turn down the computer’s volume before starting the game and then readjust the in-game Master Volume setting. This is guidance about the volume change; ATLUS did not present it as a fix for every case of missing audio.
That distinction matters. If you installed the patch and the game now sounds louder, do not interpret the change as a new hardware fault. Lower the system output first, launch, and use Master Volume to establish the level you want. If the game is still silent, continue through the output and session checks rather than repeatedly raising the system volume.

A safe way to rebalance after the patch
- Quit the game if it is running.
- Reduce the computer’s main output volume to a conservative level.
- Start Metaphor: ReFantazio and open the audio or Sound Settings screen.
- Play a menu sound or enter an area where music normally starts.
- Raise or lower Master Volume in the game until the signal is audible and comfortable.
- Make small final changes with the computer’s output control rather than jumping directly to maximum.
If this procedure produces normal sound but the level changes again after a restart, note the exact sequence and your output device in a bug report. The patch note establishes the Master Volume increase, but it does not establish why an individual system would remain silent.

When sound disappears during a session
A mid-game cutoff is different from audio that never worked after installation. First pause and determine whether the menu itself is silent. Then open the game’s Sound Settings and select the output device again. One Steam user reported recovering audio by doing exactly that. Because this is a player account rather than an ATLUS confirmation, treat it as a quick, reversible workaround.
If reselecting the output works temporarily
Continue playing long enough to see whether the sound remains stable after changing areas or opening menus. If it cuts out again, write down what happened immediately beforehand: a scene transition, controller or headset change, display change, suspend or resume, or another application taking control of the output. Those observations are more useful than simply reporting “no sound,” especially if you later contact support.
If reselecting the output does nothing
- Confirm that the selected device is physically connected and producing sound in another application.
- Check the operating system’s active output and application mixer while the game is running.
- Return to the game’s Master Volume setting and make a small adjustment, then test again.
- Close and relaunch the game to distinguish a session-only failure from a persistent configuration problem.
These checks do not prove a particular cause. They separate an output-routing failure from a game-setting problem so that your next report contains a useful description.
When music is quiet but voices and effects remain
Quiet music is not the same symptom as total silence. If dialogue, menu sounds, and effects are audible, begin by checking the game’s volume controls rather than treating the entire output as disconnected. The documented PC patch changed Master Volume, so compare the perceived music level before and after adjusting that control. Avoid raising the computer volume to maximum until you have checked the in-game setting.

Test more than one location. Some scenes have intentionally low or absent music, while others provide a clear musical cue. If music is missing in every location but other categories remain audible, record that distinction. If only one scene is affected, include the location and the action that preceded it when reporting the issue.
Do not label a language mismatch as missing music. A different voice language changes dialogue presentation; SEGA’s FAQ addresses language selection from the pause menu, not music restoration.
Check language settings only for the correct symptom
SEGA’s FAQ, updated October 7, 2024, states that players can change the game’s text and audio language from the pause menu whenever that menu is available. Use this setting when voices are unexpectedly presented in another language or when text and speech do not match your preference.
Language selection is not documented as a cure for absent music. If the soundtrack is silent but the selected voice language is correct, leave language troubleshooting aside and return to volume and output checks. If the pause menu is unavailable because of the current game state, reach a point where it is available and then review the setting.

What the October 2024 console information does—and does not—say
The published notes cover PC patch 1.03 and console patch 1.04 in October 2024. ATLUS West’s quoted audio guidance concerns the Windows PC and Steam patch: it says Master Volume was increased and tells PC players to lower computer volume before startup, then readjust Master Volume. The available note does not provide equivalent PlayStation or Xbox instructions for missing audio.
For that reason, do not assume that a PC output-reselection procedure or the PC volume advice applies identically to a console. On a console, you can still verify the game’s own volume setting, the television or headset output, and the console’s current audio device, but present those as general checks rather than as an ATLUS-documented console fix. If the problem persists, report the console model, connection type, and exact symptom through the platform’s support route and ATLUS’s available support channels.

- Did sound disappear after it was working? Reselect the output in Sound Settings, then restart if necessary.
- Is the only problem the spoken language? Use the pause menu’s text/audio language setting when available.
- Does the issue return after a restart? Record the platform, patch level, output device, timing, and steps already attempted before submitting a report.
Changing one thing at a time makes the result interpretable. If you simultaneously change the operating-system device, Master Volume, language, and headset connection, you may not know which action affected the symptom.

Prepare a useful ATLUS bug report
For unresolved PC problems, ATLUS’s pinned Steam bug-report thread asks players to provide a detailed account and their PC setup. Follow that request, then add the symptom details that help distinguish complete silence from a balance or routing issue.
Include these core facts
- Platform and edition, such as Windows PC or Steam; include the console model if you are reporting a console issue.
- When the problem began and whether it happened immediately at startup or during play.
- Whether all audio is missing or only music, dialogue, effects, or menu sounds.
- The output device selected in the game and the device connected to the computer or console.
- Your game patch level, including whether the PC installation has patch 1.03 or the console installation has the October 2024 patch 1.04.
- Your computer setup for a PC report, as requested in ATLUS’s pinned thread.
Describe what you already tried
- Updating the game.
- Lowering computer volume before startup and readjusting in-game Master Volume.
- Checking the operating system’s output and application volume.
- Reselecting the output in the game’s Sound Settings.
- Restarting the game.
- Checking the pause-menu language setting when the symptom involved voice language.
State the result of each step instead of listing only the actions. For example, say that reselecting the output restored sound for five minutes and then it disappeared again, or that voices and effects remained audible while music did not. ATLUS directly asks for a detailed issue and PC information; the additional fields above are practical suggestions for making that report reproducible.
Common mistakes that make the problem harder to diagnose
- Raising every volume control to maximum. Patch 1.03 increased PC Master Volume, and ATLUS advised lowering computer volume before launch. Maximum system volume can obscure whether the in-game level is correctly balanced.
- Calling every fault “no sound.” Say whether music, voices, effects, and menus are each audible. Different symptoms point to different checks.
- Treating a player workaround as an official fix. Output reselection was reported by a Steam user; it is not a confirmed universal solution.
- Changing language to repair music. SEGA documents language selection, not music recovery.
- Assuming console behavior matches PC behavior. The documented Master Volume instruction is for Windows PC and Steam, and platform-specific PlayStation or Xbox steps were not provided in the available official notes.
- Reporting without timing or setup information. A report that says only “music is gone” cannot distinguish startup silence from a mid-session cutoff.

If the issue remains after updating, balancing Master Volume, checking the active output, trying the reported output-reselection workaround, and restarting, preserve your observations for a bug report instead of repeatedly altering unrelated settings.
