If a PC game has no music, start inside the game: raise the separate Music and Master sliders and clear any music or mute-when-minimized setting. While the game is running, open Windows Volume Mixer and make sure the game is unmuted, turned up, and routed to the speakers or headphones you are actually using. Then test another game and a non-game app. A problem limited to one title usually belongs to that game or its installation; silence across several apps points to Windows output selection, enhancements, audio services, or drivers. Work through those layers in that order, from the easiest and most reversible checks to repairs that change system software.
Use the symptom to choose the right audio layer
Game music can disappear at more than one volume control. The game may have muted only its soundtrack, Windows may have muted the game as an individual app, or Windows may be sending that app to a different output device. A normal-looking taskbar speaker icon does not rule out any of those conditions. The table below keeps the diagnosis focused instead of sending you straight to a driver reinstall.
| What is affected | Most useful layer to inspect first | First action | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Music only; effects and dialogue still play | In-game audio profile | Raise Music separately from Master and check music-enabled or mute options | Safe and immediately reversible |
| All sound in one game; other apps work | Windows per-app mixer, app output route, then game files | Unmute the game in Volume Mixer and verify its output device | Safe; file verification changes only damaged or missing install files |
| Several games or apps are silent | Windows output, enhancements, audio services, and driver | Select the intended output and test with enhancements off | Mostly reversible; driver changes should come later |
| Audio works through one device but not another | Output selection and physical connection | Choose the working speakers or headphones and try the other connection | Safe; changing a USB port or output does not erase settings |
These are diagnostic branches, not guarantees. The same symptom can have different causes, so move to the next layer only when the current check is correct and the game remains silent.
1. Check the game’s own music controls
Open the game’s Audio or Sound options while it is running. Menu names and locations differ by title, so there is no universal path for an unnamed game. Look for controls that can suppress music independently of the rest of the mix.

Raise Music and Master separately
Set the Music slider high enough to hear it, then check Master volume. A high Master setting cannot restore music if the Music channel is at zero. Effects and dialogue may continue normally when only Music is disabled, which is why this check comes first for a soundtrack-only symptom.
Look for mute and profile switches
Check for a music-enabled checkbox, a global mute button, an audio-profile selector, or a setting that mutes the game when it is minimized or running in the background. If you switched profiles for streaming, headphones, accessibility, or surround sound, select the normal profile temporarily and test again. Apply or save the settings before returning to play.
Test without changing unrelated options
Do not reset every graphics and control setting just to test audio. Change one audio control at a time, play a scene that normally contains music, and note the result. If the game’s controls appear correct but only its soundtrack is missing, consult that game’s official support documentation for its exact audio menu and known issues rather than assuming a Windows fault.
2. Unmute the game in Windows Volume Mixer
Windows stores volume and mute state per app. The game can therefore be silent even when the system volume and taskbar icon look normal.
Windows 11
- Leave the game open and playing an area that should contain sound.
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Find the game by its title or process label under the app volume controls.
- Make sure its slider is raised and its speaker control is not muted.
- Play the same scene again before changing another setting.
Windows 11 can retain a low or muted value for one app independently of the main volume. If the game is not listed, keep it producing audio for a few seconds, close and relaunch it, and reopen Volume mixer.
Windows 10
- Keep the game running.
- Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar.
- Open Volume mixer.
- Locate the game and raise its slider or clear its mute state.
Labels can vary slightly by Windows build. The important distinction is the individual game control, not only the master speaker slider.

Do not confuse a muted channel with missing content
If effects and dialogue are also absent, the game-level mixer is still worth checking, but continue to output routing and system tests. If only music is absent, return to the in-game Music control after confirming the Windows app slider; Windows does not normally provide a separate soundtrack channel for a game.

More than one connected output makes routing errors common. USB headsets, HDMI displays, docking stations, controllers, Bluetooth devices, and motherboard audio can all appear as separate destinations. A display without speakers can become the selected output, or the game can retain a different destination from the Windows default.
Select the intended Windows output
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under the output section, select the speakers or headphones you intend to hear.
- Confirm that the device is connected, powered, and not muted by its own hardware control.
- Play a Windows test sound or a non-game recording, then return to the game.
Check the game’s own output entry
Return to Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer in Windows 11, or the per-app controls in Windows 10. Inspect the affected game’s Output device field if it is shown. Set it to the intended speakers or headphones instead of leaving it on a disconnected monitor, a previous headset, or an automatic choice that is no longer valid.
Changing the system default does not always change an app-specific route. After selecting the device, close and relaunch the game if it continues to use the old route.
When one device works and another does not
Compare the same game through the working and non-working outputs. Check cables and connectors, reseat a USB plug, and try another USB port when practical. This is a connection diagnosis, not a reason to buy replacement hardware. If every app fails through one device but works through another, the device, its connection, or its driver deserves attention after the software checks below.

- Play a different game.
- Play a non-game app such as a browser video or a local recording.
The result organizes the next steps:
- Only music in one game is missing: concentrate on the game’s Music setting, profile, and official support information.
- All audio in one game is missing but other apps work: check that game in Volume Mixer and its app-specific output, then consider installation-file verification.
- Several games or apps are silent: treat the issue as Windows audio configuration and continue with output, enhancements, troubleshooter, services, and drivers.
- Only one physical output fails: inspect that output’s connection and selection before changing game files.
This split is a practical diagnostic method, not proof that one component is definitely defective. Use it to avoid changing a healthy game installation when the same silence occurs everywhere.
5. Turn off audio enhancements temporarily
Microsoft notes that audio enhancements can cause audio problems. Disable them temporarily, test the game, and restore them later if they are not responsible.
- Open the selected output in Settings > System > Sound.
- Find the audio-enhancement control; its wording and location can vary by Windows build and driver.
- Choose the option that turns enhancements off.
- Play a scene with music and compare it with the previous result.
Enhancements can include processing supplied by Windows or by the device driver. Turning them off is a diagnostic change, not a requirement to use the device without processing permanently. If music returns, re-enable enhancements one at a time to identify whether a particular effect causes the silence.
6. Run Windows’ audio troubleshooter
When more than one app is affected, use the built-in diagnostic before reinstalling anything. For current Windows 11 guidance, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Audio. Microsoft also directs Windows 11 users to the Audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Navigation can differ by build, so use Settings search for audio troubleshooter if the label is not in the expected place.
Allow the troubleshooter to inspect the selected output, mute state, and related Windows audio configuration. Apply a suggested change only if it matches the device you intend to use, then retest the game. A troubleshooter can identify a configuration problem, but it does not prove that a game-specific music setting is correct.
7. Restart the Windows audio services for app-specific failures
If Windows audio works intermittently or one app remains silent after the basic checks, restart the services Microsoft identifies for app audio problems. This does not remove games or personal files.

- Save work and close the affected game.
- Open the Windows Services app by searching for Services from the Start menu.
- Find Windows Audio, open its context menu, and choose Restart.
- Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and restart it as well.
- Reopen the game, confirm the intended output, and test music.
If a service is already stopped rather than running, use its available start command and test again. Service names can be localized or displayed differently on some systems. Do not disable either service as a permanent troubleshooting shortcut; games and other apps rely on them for normal playback.

A driver can affect every app, a single output type, or audio after a Windows or device change. Microsoft’s broader audio guidance includes updating drivers and, when necessary, reinstalling or rolling them back. Use these options after confirming volume, routing, enhancements, the troubleshooter, and audio services.
Prefer the correct driver source
If a reinstall is needed, start with the official support page for the PC, motherboard, headset, or audio-device manufacturer. Match the driver to the exact model and Windows edition. Avoid random driver-download sites and do not install a package intended for a different chipset or device.
Choose update, reinstall, or rollback deliberately
- Update: appropriate when the current driver is old or a manufacturer has issued a fix.
- Reinstall: appropriate when the driver installation is damaged or the device is detected incorrectly.
- Rollback: appropriate when the problem began immediately after a driver update and the previous driver remains available.
Restart Windows after a driver change, reselect the intended output, and retest both a non-game app and the game. If the driver change fixes every app except one game, return to that game’s settings or installation rather than repeating system-wide driver changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Verify files for one Steam game
For a single Steam title whose settings and Windows routing are correct, file verification is a reasonable platform-specific repair step. A damaged or incomplete installation can affect game assets, including audio, but verification is not a guaranteed fix and does not establish that missing music was caused by corrupted files.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Wait for the check to finish, then launch the game and test music.
Steam may reacquire files that fail verification. Keep the launcher open until the process completes. If the title uses separate downloadable sound packs or mods, check the game’s own support instructions before removing them; file verification may not repair a mod’s configuration.

Symptom-specific decision branches
Music is missing, but effects and dialogue work
- Raise the in-game Music slider independently of Master.
- Clear a music mute or music-disabled option.
- Check whether a selected audio profile omits music or whether a minimize-related mute is active.
- Confirm the game is not muted in Windows Volume Mixer.
- If the controls are correct, consult the title’s official support page for game-specific audio files, profiles, or known issues.
General Windows guidance cannot establish the exact menu labels for an unnamed game, so do not assume every title exposes the same switches.
All sound in one game is missing, while other apps work
- Check the game’s Master and Music controls.
- Unmute and raise the game in Windows Volume Mixer.
- Set the game’s per-app output to the intended speakers or headphones.
- Relaunch the game after changing routing.
- If it is a Steam install, run file verification.
Several games or apps are silent
- Select the intended output under Settings > System > Sound.
- Check the system mute state and each affected app’s Volume Mixer entry.
- Turn enhancements off temporarily.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter.
- Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Update, reinstall, or roll back the driver if the earlier steps fail.
Audio works through one device but not another
Keep the working device selected while testing. Inspect the failing device’s connection, power, volume control, and Windows output entry. Try another USB port when relevant. If the device is absent from Windows or fails in every app, follow the device manufacturer’s support process; changing game settings will not repair a disconnected output.
What not to do first
- Do not assume the taskbar icon proves that the game is audible; per-app volume and routing are separate.
- Do not reinstall a driver before checking the game slider and Windows mixer.
- Do not buy a headset, speaker, sound card, or cable merely because one game is muted; the documented first-line fixes are software settings and troubleshooting.
- Do not present a game’s menu path as universal when the title is unspecified.
- Do not treat file verification as proof of corrupted files or as a guaranteed repair.
- Do not leave audio enhancements disabled permanently unless you prefer the result; restore them when testing shows they are not involved.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that version. The Volume Mixer and audio checks above remain useful on an existing Windows 10 installation, but an unresolved system-wide audio problem may be harder to address without current manufacturer and operating-system support. This lifecycle note does not change the order of the immediate troubleshooting steps.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When to contact the game or device maker
Escalate to the game’s official support channel when music alone is missing after the game controls, Windows mixer, output route, and any platform repair are correct, especially if another player using the same title reports the same soundtrack issue. Include the game version, launcher, Windows version, output device, whether effects and dialogue work, and which steps changed the symptom.
Contact the PC or audio-device manufacturer when the output is missing from Windows, fails in every app, disconnects repeatedly, or works only after reconnecting. Report the exact device model and driver state rather than describing the problem only as a game bug. Keeping the scope clear helps support staff avoid sending you through unrelated game reinstalls or hardware purchases.
A safe order of operations
The shortest reliable path is layered: game controls, Windows per-app mixer, output routing, scope comparison, temporary enhancement change, troubleshooter, audio services, driver maintenance, and finally platform file verification for a one-game Steam problem. Each step either fixes the symptom directly or tells you which layer deserves the next check. Stop when music returns and record the setting that solved it so a future device switch or profile change is easier to undo.
