First, protect every save copy you can still access. Don’t overwrite slots, delete local data, reinstall the game, or download a cloud save until you know which copy is newest. Then troubleshoot the symptom: a missing save, an unreadable save, and a game that cannot create new saves have different causes and fixes.
Before troubleshooting, protect your remaining saves
A restore or cleanup can replace the only copy that still works. Start by avoiding actions that change save data: don’t save repeatedly over the same slot, delete local saves, clear console data, or choose a cloud download until you have compared the available copies.
On PC, copy the complete save folder to a different drive or external device before reinstalling or removing folders. CD PROJEKT RED lists the folder as %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. Keep that backup separate from the original so later troubleshooting cannot overwrite both. A USB flash drive is one optional place to keep a separate PC backup; it does not repair a damaged file.

Think of each recovery option as a separate copy, not as a guaranteed repair. A manual save, autosave, checkpoint, local backup, platform cloud copy, or CD PROJEKT RED cross-progression save may be usable, but only if it exists, is associated with the right account, and was synchronized before the problem. Keep the original files untouched while you check.
Identify which save problem you have
Check the Load Game menu and try to create a separate new save only if doing so will not overwrite the slot you are trying to preserve. Note whether a save is absent, appears but will not load, is missing only on a different platform, or whether the game cannot write any new save.
- Save absent from Load Game: Check the game edition, platform account or console user, local save location, and cloud or cross-progression copies.
- Save visible but unreadable: Look for an intact older manual save, autosave, checkpoint, local backup, or cloud copy. A visible but unreadable file may be corrupted; restoring another intact copy is the supported path described by the official guidance.
- Save missing on another platform: Check CD PROJEKT RED cross-progression, the account connected on both versions, game updates, and edition or expansion compatibility.
- Game will not create a save: On PC, check whether Windows security software is blocking the game from writing to protected folders. That can address save creation, not repair damaged save contents.
These distinctions matter. A missing save can be present under another Windows account, console user, game edition, or cloud service. A game that refuses to write a new save points to a permissions or security issue rather than proving that existing save files are corrupt. If a save appears but will not load, do not keep trying destructive fixes that cannot restore its contents.

Copy the save folder before changing the installation
- Open File Explorer and enter
%userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesavesin the address bar. - Copy the entire
gamesavesfolder to a different drive or external device. Keep it as a safety copy; do not move the only original. - Check the copied folder for the saves you expect. If you use more than one Windows account, check the relevant account’s Documents location as well.
- Keep track of which copy is the original and which is the backup. If you later compare dates or test a copy, avoid saving over the original folder.
CD PROJEKT RED’s clean-install instructions say to disable the game’s cloud saves before performing that procedure. Follow the official clean-install sequence rather than improvising by deleting folders: local and cloud copies may differ, and a reinstall does not reconstruct a missing or corrupted save. The backup step comes first because reinstalling changes the game installation, not the state of a save that has already become unreadable.
If the folder is empty or the expected files are not there, first make sure you are looking under the Windows account that played the game. Also consider whether you are looking for a local save or a save stored through a platform cloud service. A missing file in one location does not establish that no other copy exists; check the account and cloud service used by that installation before writing off the progress.
If The Witcher 3 cannot save
Windows Controlled folder access can block an application from writing to protected folders. CD PROJEKT RED advises checking whether The Witcher 3 is on the allowed-app list when saves cannot be created. Windows Defender and Bitdefender are examples of security software covered by the developer’s instructions; the exact interface can vary by product and Windows version.
- Open the security software’s Controlled folder access settings.
- Check the allowed-app list for The Witcher 3.
- If the game is blocked, use the security software’s option to allow the game, following the developer’s instructions for the installed security product.
- Start the game and test by creating a new save in a separate slot.
If that test succeeds, the problem was save writing rather than a repair to the old save’s contents. If it still fails, preserve your files and consult CD PROJEKT RED’s technical-support instructions for the inability-to-save issue on your system. Do not use a new-save test on top of the only slot you are trying to keep.

If you use Steam Cloud
A Steam Cloud conflict can occur when the local save and cloud save have changed independently. Steam says it cannot automatically decide which version to keep in that situation, and its support team cannot recover lost saves or resolve the choice for you. Preserve both copies where possible, compare their dates, and select the version you want only after review. Do not treat a cloud prompt as proof that one copy is newer or better.
There is no automatic merge promised for two divergent versions. Before choosing, ask which copy contains the progress you want and whether another separate backup exists. If you can preserve both copies, do so before resolving the conflict. Choosing one version without checking may replace the version you meant to keep.
Use cross-progression to look for saves on another platform
CD PROJEKT RED’s cross-progression feature can make saves available on other platforms when the feature is set up correctly. Its support instructions require an updated game, a CD PROJEKT RED account connected in the game, and a newly created save uploaded through the feature. The developer describes eligible latest saves as being uploaded to the cloud for use on other platforms: “Your latest saves will be automatically uploaded to the cloud so you can easily pick up where you left off on other platforms.”
- Update The Witcher 3 on the source platform to the latest available patch.
- Open Load Game and use the Cross Progression control to connect the game to your CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a save after connecting. Check for the cloud icon that indicates the save was uploaded.
- On the destination platform, update the game and connect using the same CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Open Load Game and check for the uploaded save.
Connecting accounts alone does not establish that a missing older save has been uploaded. Check for the cloud icon on a save created after enabling cross-progression, and make sure the account is the same on both versions. If the save was never uploaded, cross-progression cannot make that particular cloud copy appear just by linking accounts after the fact.

A save that does not appear through the old integration may therefore require the newer feature rather than a local-file operation. These steps are for transferring progress between platform versions; they do not repair an unreadable file.
Check whether the game editions and expansions match
A save may appear missing because the installed product is not the same edition that created it. CD PROJEKT RED treats the console base game and GOTY/Complete Edition as separate products; their local console saves are not compatible with each other as local saves. The developer points players moving progress from the base version toward cross-progression.
Cross-progression also depends on the game content installed on the destination. A base-game save can load in Complete Edition, but a Complete Edition save will not load in the base game unless its expansions and DLC are installed. Before concluding that a save is lost, confirm the source edition, target edition, and whether the target has the content used by the save.

Check the edition on both ends, not just the platform. A save could be present in the account or transfer path but fail to show as loadable because the destination installation lacks required content. Matching the platform alone is not enough; the edition and expansions can matter too.
Nintendo Switch: compare the cloud and console copies
Nintendo’s general corrupted-save guidance recommends updating the console and game, restarting, using Check for Corrupt Data, confirming the correct user, and downloading a cloud backup if the title supports Save Data Cloud and the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Deleting a Switch user also deletes that user’s save data, so do not remove a user as a troubleshooting shortcut.
- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management, then Save Data Cloud Backup.
- Select the intended user and The Witcher 3.
- Compare the displayed timestamps for the latest cloud backup and the console save.
- If the console copy is newer, preserve it before taking any restore action. If the cloud copy is newer and contains the progress you want, download that copy.
The timestamp comparison matters because downloading one copy can overwrite the other. Nintendo says overwritten save data cannot be recovered. Confirm the user and the progress represented by each timestamp before choosing. If you are uncertain which one contains the wanted progress, do not download yet; first avoid any action that could replace the only usable version.
The Nintendo steps are platform-specific. The cloud-backup option requires Save Data Cloud support for the title and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If no cloud backup is available, do not assume that deleting and reinstalling the game will recreate one. Use the console’s update, restart, corruption-check, and correct-user checks before considering any restore or deletion.
Xbox: restart before considering local-save deletion
CD PROJEKT RED’s Xbox troubleshooting instructions recommend a full power cycle before considering more destructive steps:

- Fully power down the Xbox.
- Unplug it from power for at least two minutes.
- Reconnect power and restart the console.
If you are considering clearing local saves after restarting, first verify that cloud saving is enabled and the console is online. CD PROJEKT RED warns that progress can be lost if cloud saving is off or the console is offline. When cloud saving is enabled, the developer says the game should synchronize again when the console restarts.
Do not treat clearing local data as a routine first step. The point of the restart sequence is to try the less destructive option first. If you cannot confirm that cloud saving is active and the console has connectivity, stop before removing local saves: the online copy may not contain the progress you want.

CD PROJEKT RED’s Xbox save-information page lists eight manual-save slots, excluding checkpoints and autosaves. That figure applies to the developer’s Xbox support information; do not assume it describes every platform or a later game version. Checkpoints and autosaves are separate from the manual-save slot count, so do not count them as part of those eight slots.
Choose a recovery copy without overwriting the best one
When several versions exist, compare them before restoring. A useful copy must not only contain the desired progress; it also needs to belong to the right platform account or console user, be compatible with the installed edition and content, and be available from a local or cloud system that actually synchronized it.

- Compare dates: Look at local and cloud timestamps where the platform provides them. A newer timestamp is a clue to recency, but confirm that it represents the progress you want.
- Confirm account and user: Cross-progression requires the same CD PROJEKT RED account; console cloud saves are tied to the relevant console account or user.
- Confirm edition and content: Check whether the save came from the base game or GOTY/Complete Edition and whether the destination includes required expansions or DLC.
- Keep competing copies: Before selecting a cloud version in a conflict, retain the local copy and any available backup. Do not assume the platform can merge two divergent saves.
- Consider the overwrite risk: If an action could replace the only usable copy, stop until you have made a separate backup or checked the platform’s restore timestamps.
Recovery systems are not interchangeable. A PC folder backup is not the same as Steam Cloud; a Nintendo Switch cloud backup is not CD PROJEKT RED cross-progression; and Xbox local data should not be deleted on the assumption that another service has a current copy. Identify where each copy came from and which account it belongs to before restoring it.
When comparing versions, prioritize the copy that actually contains your intended progress, not simply the one that is easiest to select. A recent date may help establish which copy changed last, but it does not by itself show that a cloud upload completed or that the version belongs to the correct user. If the platform presents two choices, pause long enough to preserve whichever option you might otherwise lose.

An intact manual save, autosave, checkpoint, local backup, platform cloud copy, or CD PROJEKT RED cross-progression save may let you resume. Whether one exists depends on the platform, account, edition, settings, and whether it synchronized before the problem occurred.
The official support guidance described here does not establish a general way to repair a save file that is unreadable everywhere and has no intact backup. Reinstalling the game may change the installation, but it does not recreate damaged save contents. If every available copy is unreadable, avoid repeatedly modifying the files and contact the relevant platform or CD PROJEKT RED support with the platform, edition, and steps already tried.

For a missing save, recovery may mean finding a different copy rather than fixing the file in front of you. For an unwritable save, check the mechanism that prevents new files from being created. For a corrupted save with no other usable copy, there is no guaranteed recovery path in the official instructions covered here. Keeping multiple intact saves and preserving copies before troubleshooting are the safest ways to reduce the chance of losing further progress.

Check CD PROJEKT RED cross-progression: update the game, connect the same CD PROJEKT RED account on both platforms, create a save after connecting, and confirm the cloud icon appears. Then check Load Game on the destination platform. Also confirm that the editions and required expansions or DLC are compatible.
Should I download the newer cloud save on Switch?
