Mini LED blooming is often a limitation of zone-based local dimming, not a failed LED. A halo that follows a bright object can usually be made less noticeable with supported picture settings and sensible room lighting, although it may not disappear. A bright or dark mark that stays in one physical location across different scenes, apps and inputs is a different symptom and may be panel-related.
Use the diagnostic sequence below before changing several settings at once or requesting service. Menu names differ by TV model, operating system and software version, so use only controls your television actually provides.
First identify which problem you are seeing
Do not diagnose a television from one exaggerated black test screen. Watch ordinary programming, pause a scene and compare more than one source. The key question is whether the light or dark area follows on-screen content or remains attached to the same point on the panel.

Blooming and a fixed spot can coexist, but they require different decisions. A moving halo is primarily an image-processing and backlight-zone behavior question. A stationary mark that survives source changes deserves model-specific support evaluation.

Why Mini LED TVs can bloom
A Mini LED television still uses an LCD panel in front of a backlight. Local dimming divides that backlight into independently controlled zones. When a small bright object appears inside a dark scene, the zone covering it may be larger than the object itself, so neighboring dark pixels receive some light. The result is a halo whose size and visibility depend on the zone layout, dimming algorithm, scene brightness and viewing conditions.
This behavior is especially easy to notice with HDR because bright highlights are driven much harder than surrounding shadows. In its explanation of full-array local-dimming blooming, Acer Community states that “The blooming/halo effect cannot be completely eliminated while HDR is enabled.” That is a limitation described in Acer’s support article, not a universal measurement for every Mini LED model. Processing and zone behavior vary between televisions.
Blooming is therefore not automatically evidence that an LED has failed. The practical goal is to reduce how noticeable it is without making the whole picture too dim or destroying HDR contrast.
Run a controlled check before changing settings
- Choose a repeatable scene. Use a normal movie, game or broadcast scene containing a bright object against dark surroundings. Note the picture mode, HDR or SDR status, and input.
- Compare motion. Pause, resume and find another scene where the highlight moves. A halo that moves with the subtitle, lamp or star points toward blooming; a mark that remains at one screen coordinate points toward a fixed spot.
- Test multiple sources. Check at least two apps or channels and one external input if available. If the symptom exists in only one source, troubleshoot that source rather than the panel.
- Repeat in ordinary room lighting. A completely dark room makes low-level LCD nonuniformity more conspicuous. Do not use a black test screen alone as your acceptance standard.
- Inspect the surface without pressing it. If you suspect a smudge or residue, turn the set off and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. A soft, clean microfiber cloth can help rule out surface contamination; it cannot repair internal blooming or backlight nonuniformity.
Settings that can reduce visible blooming or unevenness
Make one change at a time, watch the same scene for several minutes, and record the original value so you can reverse it. Manufacturers use different names and menu locations; the options below are examples of controls mentioned in published support guidance, not a universal menu path.
Reduce Backlight
Lowering the Backlight control reduces the total light output of the LCD backlight. It can make a halo or cloudy area less obvious, particularly in a dark room. It also reduces overall brightness, so stop when shadow detail or HDR highlights become unacceptably dull. This setting is not the same as a source device’s video-level or brightness control.
Test the light sensor
If your television has an ambient-light or light-sensor option, enable it temporarily and compare the same scene. Automatic adjustment can lower the backlight in a dark room, where uneven illumination is easiest to see. If the resulting picture pumps in brightness or becomes too dim, turn the feature off and use a fixed level that suits your room.

Try Power Saving
Power-saving controls can reduce backlight output on supported models. Test the available level rather than assuming the most aggressive option is best; excessive dimming may hide the symptom by making the entire picture too dark. Record the setting that produced the comparison so you can return to your preferred balance.

Compare Standard picture mode
Switch to Standard mode if your model offers it, then repeat the same scene comparison. Sony recommends trying Standard mode for certain LCD televisions when uneven bright areas are visible with no input or in very dark scenes. Picture modes alter several processing choices at once, so use this as a diagnostic comparison rather than proof that one mode is universally correct.
Handle HDR deliberately
Confirm whether the source is HDR or SDR before judging the result. HDR highlights can make zone halos more apparent, and Acer’s guidance specifically says its full-array local-dimming halo cannot be completely eliminated while HDR is enabled. You can reduce the effect’s visibility with lower display brightness and suitable room lighting, but disabling HDR changes the image’s intended dynamic range. Treat that as a preference trade-off, not a repair.
When a bright or dark spot may indicate a panel issue
A fixed spot is different from a moving halo. After checking several inputs and content types, look for these signs:
- The mark stays at the same physical coordinates while people, subtitles and camera shots change.
- It appears in the TV’s own menus or built-in apps as well as on an external source.
- Backlight, sensor, power-saving or picture-mode changes do not alter its shape or position.
- It is visible during normal viewing, not only on a blank black screen in a dark room.
These observations do not by themselves establish a defect or warranty outcome. TCL advises checking whether a dot is limited to an app or input and notes that a persistent bright or dark spot may be panel-related. Use the instructions for your exact model and contact the manufacturer or retailer if the symptom remains.
Understand clouding and uneven backlighting
Clouding is a broad, cloudy variation in black levels; flashlighting often describes brighter areas spreading inward from a corner or edge. The terminology is commonly discussed as part of TV black-uniformity testing; RTINGS’ black-uniformity reference covers those categories. A visible variation on an empty screen is not automatically a failure during normal content viewing.

Sony’s support article, modified July 7, 2026, says some uneven brightness can be visible on covered LCD models in a dark room, with no input or while viewing very dark scenes, and describes that limited condition as normal for those products. Its suggested visibility-reduction steps are lowering Backlight, enabling the light sensor, adjusting Power Saving or selecting Standard picture mode when available. That statement applies to the models and conditions in Sony’s article; it is not a universal rule for every Mini LED television or every severity of spot.
If a broad patch is obvious in ordinary bright scenes, grows, changes after physical impact or remains severe across normal settings, document it and seek model-specific support instead of relying on the blank-screen test.
Use a symptom log instead of memory
Short, consistent notes make the comparison more useful. For each test, record the date, source, scene, HDR or SDR status, picture mode, Backlight value, light-sensor state, Power Saving state and room lighting. Describe whether the effect moved with the bright object, stayed fixed, became smaller, or was merely less visible because the entire picture became darker. This prevents a setting change from being mistaken for a repair.

Keep the original values beside the test values. If a change improves one dark scene but makes another scene too dim, you can return to the previous balance. Avoid judging a setting from a new movie or a different camera shot; use the same pause point whenever possible.

Why room lighting changes what you see
Perception matters in this diagnosis. In a completely dark room, your eyes adapt to low light and a small elevation in a black area can look dramatic. A small amount of ordinary room light can reduce the apparent contrast between a halo and its surroundings. That does not change the panel, but it can tell you whether the complaint is primarily visibility under a specific viewing setup. Compare the same scene with consistent, comfortable lighting rather than shining a flashlight directly at the screen.
What settings can and cannot prove
If lowering Backlight, enabling the sensor or changing Power Saving reduces the visible area, that shows the symptom is affected by luminance and viewing conditions. It does not prove that the underlying uniformity is within a manufacturer’s specification. Conversely, if a setting does not help, that does not prove a failed LED; a fixed panel mark may be insensitive to picture controls, and a halo may remain because the dimming zone is larger than the highlight.

There is no reliable universal number of acceptable bright spots, a standard zone count, or a single percentage that determines whether every Mini LED television is defective. Pixel and uniformity policies are model-specific. Ask the manufacturer for the criteria that apply to your exact model rather than relying on an internet test image or another brand’s policy.

- Do not press, massage or twist the LCD panel to “spread” a bright spot. Pressure can create additional damage.
- Do not conclude that a television is defective from a single 100% black test image viewed in a dark room.
- Do not change Backlight, Power Saving, HDR and picture mode simultaneously; you will not know which change affected the result.
- Do not assume a generic menu path applies to your set. TCL and Sony both emphasize model-specific instructions and changing software interfaces.
- Do not buy replacement parts or a new television before establishing whether the symptom is content-specific, a normal dark-scene characteristic for that model, or a persistent panel mark.
- Do not use aggressive cleaners or scrape the display while investigating a suspected surface mark. Follow the television maker’s cleaning directions.
Prepare an effective manufacturer support request
If the mark remains fixed or the unevenness is severe during normal viewing, gather evidence that lets support reproduce it:
- Write down the complete model number, software version, purchase date and region.
- Record the input, app or channel, picture mode, HDR or SDR status and the room-lighting condition.
- Take one photograph showing the symptom in ordinary content and another showing its position relative to the screen edges. Avoid relying only on a black test image.
- State whether the mark appears in the TV menu, built-in apps and external inputs.
- List the settings you changed and restore or identify the original values.
- Ask for the model’s published uniformity or pixel guidance and the applicable inspection or warranty process.
Support may request its own test pattern or reset procedure. Follow that model-specific instruction, but do not erase your photographs and notes until the case is resolved. If the set is still within a retailer or manufacturer coverage period, ask about the inspection route before paying for third-party work. No general repair price can be stated responsibly without the model, diagnosis and region.

Replacement is not the first step for a halo that tracks bright objects. First decide whether the effect is acceptable after controlled settings and room-light comparisons. A fixed mark that appears across menus, built-in apps and external inputs is a different case; obtain a model-specific assessment before purchasing parts or another television. This avoids spending money to solve an app artifact or a dark-room characteristic that does not affect ordinary viewing.
The practical verdict
A halo that tracks bright objects is usually blooming from zone-based local dimming. Reduce its visibility with a controlled Backlight, light-sensor, Power Saving or picture-mode comparison, and keep expectations realistic for HDR. A spot that stays in one place across content and inputs belongs in a separate panel-related investigation. Unevenness visible only on a blank screen in a dark room may be considered normal for some covered LCD models, while severe or persistent marks during ordinary viewing warrant manufacturer support.

Is blooming proof that my Mini LED TV is defective?
No. A halo that moves with a bright subtitle, lamp or star is consistent with zone-based local dimming. Acer Community says its full-array local-dimming halo cannot be completely eliminated while HDR is enabled. A fixed mark that stays in one location is a separate symptom and may be panel-related.

How can I tell a halo from a dead or stuck pixel?
Pause scenes and move to different content. A halo follows the bright object; a fixed pixel or spot remains at the same screen coordinates. Check more than one app, input and the TV’s own menus before drawing a conclusion.
Will lowering Backlight permanently fix blooming?
It can reduce visibility by lowering total backlight output, but it does not change the zone layout or repair the panel. Compare the same scene, one adjustment at a time, and stop if HDR highlights or shadow detail become unacceptably dim.
Should I turn HDR off?
Turning HDR off may make a halo less noticeable, but it also changes the source’s intended dynamic range. Treat that as a viewing preference or diagnostic comparison, not a hardware repair. Acer’s guidance specifically notes that the halo cannot be completely eliminated while HDR is enabled.
Why does clouding look worse on a black test screen?
A blank black screen in a dark room makes small LCD brightness variations easier to see. Sony describes some unevenness under that limited condition as normal for certain covered LCD models. Judge the set with ordinary content and comfortable room lighting as well.
What should I photograph for support?
Take one image showing the symptom during ordinary content and another showing its fixed position relative to the screen edges. Note the model, software version, input, app, HDR or SDR status, picture mode and room lighting. Do not rely only on a black test pattern.
Can I press the panel to remove a bright spot?
No. Pressing, massaging or twisting an LCD panel can create additional damage. Use only non-contact checks and the settings your model provides.
Is there a universal acceptable number of bright spots?
No universal threshold applies to every Mini LED television. Pixel and uniformity criteria vary by model and manufacturer. Ask support for the policy that applies to your exact set rather than borrowing another brand’s test standard.

Bottom line: If the glow follows bright objects, it is usually local-dimming blooming and can often be made less noticeable, not eliminated. If a bright, dark or cloudy mark stays fixed across apps, inputs and normal content, document it and request model-specific support. Change one supported setting at a time, avoid pressure on the panel, and do not replace the TV until you have separated a source artifact, dark-room characteristic and possible panel issue.
