Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The fastest reliable fix is to stop guessing: identify the server software and loader, record the exact Minecraft and Java versions, read the newest log or crash report, then correct the file type, dependency, or version mismatch it reports. Back up the world and test changes on a copy before you remove mods, switch loaders, or open a saved world with different software.
Use this order when a server addon or mod fails
Most startup failures become straightforward once the environment and the first meaningful error are known. Work through these steps in order rather than replacing files at random.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Protect the data. Stop the server cleanly, copy the entire server directory, and make a separate world backup. Keep the original copy untouched while testing.
- Write down the environment. Record the Minecraft Java Edition version, server implementation, loader and build, Java version, operating system, every addon or mod filename and version, and the time the failure began.
- Classify the file. Decide whether the download is a Fabric mod, Forge mod, Paper plugin, or something intended for vanilla. These ecosystems are not interchangeable.
- Read the evidence. Open
logs/latest.logand the newest crash report. Save the complete files before editing anything. Find the firstCaused by, dependency, version, Java, or “could not load” message and several surrounding lines. - Correct one cause at a time. Install the required dependency, remove a duplicate, select the required Java runtime, or replace the file with one built for the exact Minecraft and loader version.
- Reproduce on a copy. If the cause is not obvious, remove the newest addition, start the copied server, and reintroduce components one at a time or by halves. Record the result after every change.
This process gives you a reversible test and a useful report if the problem needs help from a loader or project maintainer.
Identify the server ecosystem before changing anything
An addon only loads in the ecosystem for which it was built. Confirm the server software from its startup banner, launch script, or JAR name; do not infer it from the word “server” in a download page.
| Server or loader | What it loads | Correct location or rule |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Fabric mods packaged for the exact Java Edition release | Put the mod JAR in the Fabric instance’s mods/ directory and add Fabric API when the mod declares it as required. Follow the version guidance at Fabric’s mod-installation documentation. |
| Forge | Forge-compatible mods and their declared libraries | Use the Forge server’s mods/ directory. Satisfy dependency, Java, and load-order requirements described in the mod metadata and Forge’s mod-file documentation. |
| Paper | Paper-compatible Bukkit or Spigot-style plugins | Put plugin JARs in plugins/, as described in Paper’s plugin guide. Fabric and Forge mod JARs are not plugins. |
| Vanilla | Unmodified Minecraft server behavior | Vanilla does not load Fabric or Forge mods, and it does not provide Paper’s plugin API. Use the matching server implementation instead. |
Paper explicitly states that it does not support Fabric or Forge mods. If a world contains mod-added blocks, items, dimensions, or other data, Paper cannot load that content; you need an equivalent plugin or must remain on the original mod loader. See Paper’s migration documentation before attempting a switch.

Record exact versions and Java details
Compatibility is determined by the complete version combination, not just a major release. A mod that worked on one Minecraft point release can fail on another, and Fabric requires mods for the correct Java Edition. Verify the Minecraft version shown by the server, the loader or server build, and the version printed on each mod or plugin download page. Fabric documents this point-release requirement at its installation guide.
Check the Java runtime actually launching the server
Mojang says the Java server requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment; the server download page is minecraft.net/en-us/download/server. Forge requires a 64-bit Java environment and documents mod Java requirements at Forge’s getting-started guide. Paper’s required Java version changes with the Paper release, so use the requirement for your specific build at Paper’s getting-started documentation.
Run the same Java binary that the startup script invokes, rather than checking only the Java bundled with a desktop launcher. In a command prompt or terminal, run:
java -version
If the script uses an absolute path, run that path with -version as well. A log mentioning an unsupported class-file version, an explicit Java requirement, or a failed runtime initialization means the runtime must be changed before you investigate mod behavior. Memory errors are a separate problem: increase the server allocation only after Java compatibility is confirmed, and leave memory for the operating system and other services.
Read the log or crash report before replacing files
Paper describes three possible forms of evidence: “If your server encounters a problem, it will either print an error message on the server console, create a crash report and close itself, or do both.” The relevant guidance is at Paper’s basic troubleshooting page.

Open the newest logs/latest.log and any crash report generated at the same time. Fabric calls the stack trace under the ---- Minecraft Crash Report ---- heading the most important section because it contains the main error; its explanation is at Fabric’s crash-report guide.
What to capture
- The first
Caused by:line and the exception immediately after it. - Any line containing
requires, depends, incompatible, unsupported, missing, orcould not load. - The several lines before and after that message, including the mod or plugin identifier and versions.
- The complete log and report as separate files for support; a final “server stopped” line by itself is not enough.
A mod named in the stack trace is not automatically the culprit. Fabric warns that interactions between several mods can make one mod appear in the crash even when another component or combination caused the failure. Treat the named component as a lead, then reproduce with the smallest set that still fails.
Fix misplaced, invalid, or duplicated downloads
Put the file in the directory its loader scans
Use mods/ for Fabric or Forge mod JARs and plugins/ for Paper plugins. Do not leave a download in the server root and expect it to load. Stop the server before moving files, then restart and inspect the new log.
Check that the download is really a JAR
A browser can save an HTML error page with a .jar extension, and a ZIP or source archive may not be a runtime mod. Check the file type and open it with an archive tool if necessary. The archive should contain the loader metadata expected by Fabric, Forge, or the plugin platform. Download from the project’s official distribution page when available.
Remove duplicates and stale builds
Two copies of the same plugin or mod, especially different versions with similar names, can produce duplicate-registration or class-loading errors. Stop the server, move the older or duplicate JAR to a quarantine folder outside the scanned directory, and restart. Keep the original file until the replacement is proven to work.

Resolve Fabric-specific failures
Match Minecraft, Fabric Loader, and the mod
Check that every Fabric mod targets the server’s exact Minecraft release and that the installed Fabric Loader is supported by those files. A file made for a nearby point release is not automatically compatible. If the log identifies a loader requirement, install that loader build in a test copy rather than changing the live server first.
Install Fabric API and declared libraries
Many Fabric mods require Fabric API or an additional library. A missing dependency normally appears as a named “requires” or “depends” message. Install the dependency version matching the same Minecraft release, restart, and inspect the log again. Do not add unrelated libraries simply because their names look similar.
Investigate a crash that names the wrong mod
Remove the newest mod from a copied server and reproduce the crash. If it persists, halve the remaining mod set and test each half; continue narrowing until one component or pair is responsible. This binary-search method is faster than repeatedly changing several files and preserves a clear record for the mod author.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsResolve Forge-specific failures
Read dependency and ordering messages
Forge mod metadata can specify required mods, version ranges, and load-order constraints. Install every required dependency for the same Minecraft and Forge versions. A cyclic ordering requirement can stop startup even when all files are present; the error normally names the cycle or the affected mods. Remove the newest addition in a copy, then add components back in a controlled order.
Confirm Java and architecture
Forge documents a 64-bit Java environment and per-release Java requirements at its getting-started page. If the log reports a 32-bit runtime, an unsupported class version, or a Java requirement that is not met, correct the startup script and verify with the exact Java executable before troubleshooting mod configuration.

Resolve Paper plugin errors
Use a plugin build, not a mod build
Paper scans plugins/ for plugins that declare the Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper plugin format. A Fabric or Forge mod is a different artifact and will commonly produce a “not a plugin” or missing plugin metadata error. Paper’s placement instructions are at docs.papermc.io/paper/adding-plugins/.
Recommended Free Tools
Match the Paper release and plugin API
Check the plugin’s supported Minecraft or API versions against the Paper build. Update the plugin only when its release notes support your server version, and update Paper only after confirming that the rest of the plugin set remains compatible. If a plugin fails after an update, restore the backed-up JAR in the test copy and compare the two logs.
Check configuration and permissions after it loads
A plugin that loads successfully can still fail when a configuration value, database connection, or permission is invalid. Separate startup loading errors from runtime command or gameplay errors by searching the log for the first exception after the server reaches its “done” state. Fix the named configuration or service, then retest with one change.
Understand common error messages
| Log symptom | Likely meaning | Safe next action |
|---|---|---|
| “Incompatible,” “unsupported,” or a version range failure | The Minecraft, loader, Java, mod, or plugin versions do not overlap. | Compare exact point releases and loader builds; install a compatible file or roll back the last change on a copy. |
| “Requires” or “missing dependency” | A declared library, API, or companion mod is absent or the wrong version. | Install the named dependency for the same Minecraft release, then restart once. |
| “Not a plugin” or missing plugin metadata | A mod, invalid archive, source package, or HTML error page was placed in plugins/. |
Remove it and obtain the correct Paper plugin JAR. |
| Duplicate class, duplicate registration, or already loaded | Two copies or overlapping components are being scanned. | Quarantine the older or duplicate file and test again. |
| Unsupported class-file version | The Java runtime is older or otherwise incompatible with the compiled server or mod. | Select the Java version required by the server release and verify the startup command. |
| Out-of-memory or allocation failure | The process cannot reserve enough memory, or the requested allocation leaves no room for the operating system. | Confirm Java first, then adjust the memory flags conservatively and reduce the mod set if necessary. |
| A stack trace naming a seemingly unrelated mod | An interaction or dependency conflict may have surfaced through that mod. | Reproduce with a minimal set and test the named mod together with recently changed components. |
Isolate a conflict without damaging the world
- Stop the server normally so region and player files are flushed.
- Copy the entire directory, including
world, dimensions, configuration, mods, plugins, and logs. - On the copy, remove or disable only the most recent addon, mod, or plugin.
- Start the copy and perform the action that previously failed. Record whether startup, joining, a command, or a particular chunk triggers the problem.
- If it still fails, divide the remaining components into two groups and test each group. If it starts, add the removed group back in smaller batches until the failure returns.
- When you identify a reproducible combination, preserve the failing log and the working configuration. Re-enable the component on the live server only after a tested rollback plan exists.
Never test an unknown mod combination first on the only copy of a valuable world. A backup protects files, but it does not make unsupported world conversion safe.
Do not switch loaders casually
Changing from Fabric or Forge to Paper is not a universal repair. Paper cannot load mod-added blocks, items, dimensions, or other data from a modded world. A migration can therefore remove content or leave references that no longer resolve. Paper’s documented migration limits are at docs.papermc.io/paper/migration/.

Before a migration, make a tested backup, inventory the modded content used by players, and verify an equivalent plugin for every essential feature. Open the converted world only on a disposable copy first. If no equivalent exists, keep the original loader and repair its version, dependency, Java, or configuration problem instead.
Use the right support channel
Minecraft Support states: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” The statement appears at Minecraft Support’s Java modding article. For actionable help, use the official issue tracker or support channel for the loader, server implementation, mod, or plugin after reproducing the problem on a clean, minimal setup.
Include a complete, useful report
- Server implementation, loader and build, Minecraft version, operating system, and Java version.
- The exact filenames and versions of every mod or plugin, including dependencies.
- The command or script used to start the server.
- The full
latest.logor crash report, with the first relevant exception and surrounding lines. - The change immediately before the failure and the smallest set of files that reproduces it.
- Whether the issue occurs during startup, player join, a command, world load, or a specific block or dimension.
Remove secrets such as account tokens, database passwords, and private host addresses before posting logs. Do not replace the complete stack trace with only its last line.
Costs, downloads, and rollback planning
The official Minecraft server software for Java and Bedrock is free to download from Mojang’s server page: minecraft.net/en-us/download/server. Paid hosting or administration software is not required to perform this diagnosis. The important safeguards are a compatible runtime, verified files, complete logs, and a recoverable backup.

Quick Recap
Final pre-start checklist
- The server implementation and loader are known and match the addon type.
- Minecraft point release, loader build, Java version, and operating system are recorded.
- Every file is a valid mod or plugin JAR from the correct project and is in the correct directory.
- Required APIs, libraries, and Forge ordering constraints are satisfied.
- No duplicate or stale JAR remains in a scanned directory.
- The newest log or crash report has been read, and the first meaningful exception is understood.
- The world is backed up, and risky changes were tested on a copy.
- A loader migration has been rejected unless every required piece of world data has a tested replacement.
