If Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux will not launch, freezes, or crashes on a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, start with platform-safe checks rather than assuming a known Metro defect. On PS5, the documented sequence is to check the disc or installation, move the game to internal storage, restart, restore licenses, reinstall, update system software, and then use Safe Mode maintenance. On Xbox, use the current Xbox Support instructions for console restart and game problems because the exact procedures can change. For either console, check the game update, ventilation, and a clean reinstall before contacting PLAION support.
There is no confirmed source establishing one universal Metro Redux crash bug on either current-generation console. The steps below separate launch failures, licensing problems, freezes, and repeatable crashes so you can stop at the least disruptive fix that matches your symptom.

First identify which Metro Redux problem you have
“Metro Redux” refers to two separate 2014 releases: Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux. Troubleshooting is easier when support knows the exact title, console model, copy type, and point of failure.
| What you see | What it usually tells you to check first | Information to record |
|---|---|---|
| The game never opens or returns to the dashboard | Installation location, game update, system software, disc condition, and licensing | Title, disc or download, console model, and any error code |
| A padlock, purchase prompt, or entitlement message appears | Purchasing account, subscription entitlement if applicable, console sharing, and service status | Account used to buy the game and the exact wording on screen |
| Black screen or freeze before the menu | Restart, storage location, update status, and reinstall | Whether other games start normally and how long the screen remains stuck |
| Crash at a particular level, cut-scene, or save | Reproducibility, update status, save-specific symptoms, and a clean reinstall | Mission or checkpoint, steps immediately before the crash, and a video if possible |
Also note whether other games fail. If several games are affected, treat the issue as a console, storage, account, or system problem rather than assuming Metro Redux alone is responsible.

PS5: Metro Redux will not launch
PlayStation’s official game-start troubleshooting order moves from reversible checks to more disruptive maintenance. Apply only the steps relevant to your copy.
1. Check a disc copy
If you own a disc, inspect it for dirt, fingerprints, or visible damage and insert it correctly. Confirm that the PS5 recognizes the disc and that the game is installed from that disc. A download-only edition does not need this check. Do not buy another copy merely because the current installation fails; establish whether the problem is the disc, entitlement, or software first.
2. Move the installation to PS5 internal storage
PlayStation specifically recommends moving a game from USB extended storage to the console’s internal storage when a PS5 game will not start. In the PS5 storage settings, select the installed game and use the move option to place it on internal storage, then try launching again. This step changes where the existing installation resides; it does not erase your save by itself. Make sure the internal drive has enough free space before starting the move.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Restart the PS5
Use the normal power menu to restart the console, wait for the home screen to return, and launch Metro Redux before opening other applications. A restart is preferable to repeatedly pulling the power cable, which can interrupt writes and create additional storage problems.
4. Restore licenses
For a digital copy that appears locked or suddenly asks you to purchase the game, restore licenses while signed in to the account that acquired it. Also verify that the transaction belongs to that account, that a required subscription is active, that console sharing is configured as intended, and that PlayStation services are operating normally. A licensing failure is different from a crash: reinstalling the game will not correct an account that lacks the entitlement.
5. Delete and download the game again
If the title still will not start, delete the game installation and download it again. PlayStation suggests using a wired connection if possible, because a stable download reduces the chance of another incomplete installation. Confirm that the download and any available game update have finished before launching. Deleting the application is not the same as deleting saved data; check the item you are removing carefully, and back up saves if you are unsure.
6. Update PS5 system software
Install the latest PS5 system-software update offered in Settings. A current system helps rule out incompatibility between the console software and the game package. Restart after the update if the console requests it, then test the game on its own.
7. Use Safe Mode maintenance
If ordinary restart, storage, licensing, reinstall, and update checks do not help, PlayStation lists Safe Mode options to clear the console cache and rebuild the database. These are maintenance operations intended to address system-level data organization and temporary data; follow the on-screen warnings and do not interrupt the console while it works. Connect the controller by USB when Safe Mode requires a wired connection.
8. Treat system-software reinstallation as a last resort
Reinstalling PS5 system software is substantially more consequential than rebuilding the database. PlayStation advises backing up data first. Do not select a destructive reset simply because Metro Redux fails to launch; reserve this route for cases where PlayStation Support directs you to it after less disruptive steps have failed.

PS5: Metro Redux crashes, freezes, or shows a black screen
A crash after the menu, during a loading transition, or at the same checkpoint needs a slightly different approach from a title that never opens.
Check the game update and console environment
Make sure Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux has downloaded its current update. Then check that the PS5 has adequate ventilation: keep its vents unobstructed, avoid an enclosed compartment that traps heat, and remove dust that blocks airflow. PLAION’s crash guidance presents update and cooling checks as general advice for its games, not as proof that overheating caused a particular Metro failure.
Recommended Free Tools
Try a clean reinstall
If the crash persists, reinstall the affected title. A reinstall replaces the application files, but it cannot guarantee a fix for a damaged save, an account problem, or a defect that is reproduced by every player. Keep saved data in mind: do not delete it unless you understand the consequence and have a backup or cloud copy available.
Separate a game-wide crash from a save-specific crash
Record whether a new game reaches the same point. If a fresh profile works while one existing save crashes at a particular checkpoint, tell support that distinction instead of repeatedly reinstalling. If every profile fails at the same screen, include that in the report. Avoid claiming that the save is corrupted unless the behavior actually isolates the save; the available guidance does not establish a universal cause.
Capture reproducible evidence
When the failure repeats, note the exact title, PS5 model, game version if visible, system-software version, disc or download format, level or menu, and the steps immediately before the crash. Write down any error code exactly. A short screenshot or video can show whether the console freezes, closes the game, displays a black screen, or returns to the dashboard.
Xbox Series X|S: what to do when Metro Redux will not start
The Xbox Store lists Metro 2033 Redux as playable on Xbox Series X|S, and the Metro Redux Bundle contains both Redux games. That confirms platform availability; it does not prove that every installation or account state will work without troubleshooting.

Xbox support instructions can change with dashboard versions and account settings. Use the current Xbox Support guidance for restarting the console, handling a game that will not launch, checking updates, and resolving installation problems rather than relying on an old button sequence or an unverified cache trick. The Xbox support pages consulted for this article did not provide readable procedural text, so no specific power-cycle, cache-clearing, or local-save sequence is presented as an official Metro fix.
Check the title, edition, and entitlement
Confirm whether you are starting Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux and whether the installed item is the game or a bundle entry. For a digital copy, sign in with the purchasing account and check that the console is online if the entitlement requires an online check. For a disc, make sure the console reads the disc and that the installed edition matches it. A purchase or ownership message should be handled as an account or service issue, not diagnosed as a crash.
Install available updates and check ventilation
Allow the game and the console to finish any pending updates. Keep the Series X or Series S in an open, ventilated position and make sure air intakes and exhausts are not blocked. This follows PLAION’s general crash guidance; it is not evidence that heat is the cause of your particular failure.

Reinstall only after considering saved data
If the game still crashes, use Xbox’s current official instructions for removing and reinstalling the game. Read the prompts carefully so you remove the application rather than saved data unless support has told you otherwise. A reinstall can replace incomplete game files, but it is not a guaranteed repair and should not be presented as one.

For a crash that returns at the same level or menu, collect the title, console model, game edition, game and system versions, error code, reproduction steps, and a recording if possible. Send that information through the publisher’s support catalogue for Metro titles. If other Xbox games fail as well, include that broader pattern when contacting Xbox Support.

What the October 2026 Metro Redux update does—and does not prove
PLAION says the free console upgrade for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux is scheduled worldwide for October 29, 2026, with Japan scheduled for November. On October 16, 2026, that date is still in the future, so do not describe the update as available or claim that it has already fixed a launch or crash problem.
The announcement describes native PS5 and PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S support, 4K textures, community-led bug fixes, and other platform enhancements. It describes console modes including true 4K at 60 frames per second and upscaled 4K at 120 frames per second when suitable display hardware is used. Full technical patch notes are due at launch. These are announced features, not a diagnosis of an individual console failure.
PLAION’s FAQ characterizes the release as a quality-of-life upgrade rather than a remake or remaster. It states that existing owners receive it free and that new players automatically receive the next-generation update when purchasing Metro 2033 Redux and/or Metro: Last Light Redux on the stated platforms. After October 29, verify the update’s actual availability and read the published patch notes before attributing a specific fix to it.
When to contact support
Contact PlayStation or Xbox for account, service, console, or system-level problems. Contact PLAION support when the failure appears limited to one Redux title after the platform checks and reinstall. A useful report contains:
- The exact game: Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux.
- Console model: PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S.
- Disc or digital copy, bundle or standalone edition, and region if relevant.
- Game version and console system-software version, if shown.
- The screen, level, checkpoint, or menu where the failure occurs.
- Exact reproduction steps and whether a new save behaves differently.
- Any error code, written exactly as displayed.
- A screenshot or video when possible.
- Whether other games launch normally.
Do not omit a failed step: telling support that you moved the PS5 installation, restored licenses, reinstalled, or followed the current Xbox procedure helps prevent the same instructions being repeated without context.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume every crash is caused by overheating, corrupted data, or a known Metro bug; no universal diagnosis is established here.
- Do not apply PC advice such as graphics-driver updates, Steam file verification, background-app shutdown, or lowering graphics settings to a console.
- Do not use an old Xbox cache or power-cycle recipe as if it were a current, official Metro procedure.
- Do not delete saved data when you intend to remove only the game application.
- Do not reinstall PS5 system software before backing up data and exhausting less disruptive options.
- Do not treat a future update announcement as proof that your present crash has a confirmed fix.
Following the platform-specific order gives you the best chance of resolving an ordinary installation, entitlement, or temporary system problem while preserving the evidence needed for a genuine game-specific investigation.
