Start with the exact message in the Home app. “Unable to add to home” means pairing or setup failed; “No Response” means the accessory was added but is not answering. “Thread Border Router Required” and “Needs Thread Network” indicate missing Thread infrastructure. Each message has a different fix, so follow the matching path below rather than resetting everything at once.
Identify the failure stage before changing anything
Write down the exact alert, the accessory’s brand and model, whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread, whether it was paired with another app or Home previously, which iPhone or iPad you are using, and whether the manufacturer’s app can control it. Those details determine the correct branch and give the manufacturer useful information if you need support.

| Message or symptom | What it means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| “Unable to add to home” | The setup transaction did not complete. | Use an iPhone or iPad, check power, Bluetooth, compatibility, network requirements, pairing codes and prior-home ownership. |
| “No Response” | The accessory is already in Home but is not answering requests. | Choose the one-manufacturer or several-manufacturer path, then check firmware, hubs, Wi-Fi and Thread. |
| “Thread Border Router Required” | The accessory needs a Thread border router and the Apple device or home does not currently provide one. | Add or use a compatible Thread-enabled home hub or third-party Thread border router. |
| “Needs Thread Network” | Home cannot find the Thread network needed by the accessory. | Check Thread-capable Apple hardware, account, power, interference and the accessory’s firmware. |
| Network is incompatible | The accessory’s radio requirement does not match the network being offered. | Read the model’s manual; some accessories require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and do not work on 5 GHz. |
| Accessory was already added or used in another home | The device still has an earlier pairing or ownership state. | Use the former app or home if available, then follow the maker’s reset procedure before pairing again. |
Apple’s support instructions separate these cases because a setup failure, a lost response, and a missing Thread network have different causes. Do not treat “No Response” as proof that the original pairing failed.
Prepare the Apple device, accessory and network
- Use an iPhone or iPad for setup. Apple says a Mac cannot add accessories in the Home app. Install the latest available iOS or iPadOS update for the device you are using and turn on Bluetooth.
- Keep the accessory powered. Replace or reseat batteries when appropriate, and confirm that status lights or the manufacturer app show that it is ready for setup.
- Confirm Apple Home and Matter compatibility. Read the accessory’s manual and the maker’s app instructions. Some models require an update, an extra bridge, or initial setup in the manufacturer app.
- Check the transport. Determine whether the model communicates over Wi-Fi or Thread. Some Wi-Fi accessories require 2.4 GHz and are not compatible with 5 GHz; that is a model-specific requirement, not a rule that applies to every Matter accessory.
- Test the manufacturer app. If the maker’s app cannot see or control the device, the problem is not limited to Apple Home. Record that result for the maker’s support team.
During setup, keep the phone or tablet and accessory close to the router and follow the model’s instructions for pairing mode. If a third-party bridge or an Apple home hub is already part of the installation, be prepared to restart it as part of the relevant procedure.

Fix “Unable to add to home”
1. Use the supported setup device
- Open the Home app on an iPhone or iPad, not a Mac.
- Install pending iOS or iPadOS updates and enable Bluetooth in Settings.
- Confirm that the accessory is a Matter or Apple Home-compatible model and that its manual does not require a bridge, firmware update or manufacturer-app step first.
If the app offers a QR code, scan it in Home. For a Matter accessory that was paired in another app, open that app and generate its Matter pairing code, then enter or scan the code in Home. Depending on the model, the code is a QR code or an 11- or 21-digit Matter code.
2. Resolve power, distance and hub issues
- Make sure the accessory is powered and in pairing mode.
- Move it closer to the router during setup. This is a temporary troubleshooting position; you can return it to its intended location after pairing succeeds.
- Restart any third-party bridge involved in the setup.
- Restart all Apple home hubs associated with the home.
- Try adding the accessory again.
These steps address a failed handoff without erasing the device. If the alert remains, continue with the model-specific checks instead of repeatedly attempting the same code.
3. Match the Wi-Fi requirement
When Home reports an incompatible network, consult the accessory manual for the required band. Apple notes that some accessories support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi but not 5 GHz. Connect the setup device to the network the accessory expects, and follow the maker’s instructions for band selection or temporary pairing. Do not infer that every Matter product requires 2.4 GHz; the requirement belongs to the individual model.

4. Clear an earlier pairing safely
If Home says the accessory was already added or used in another home, it may still hold its previous pairing. If you can access the former manufacturer app or home, use its removal procedure first. Otherwise, reset the accessory only with the maker’s documented method for that exact model, then put it back into pairing mode and add it to Home. Reset controls and timing vary, so an invented button sequence can leave the device in the wrong state.
When Home says “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network”
These alerts are infrastructure messages. A Thread accessory needs a Thread border router to join the home’s Thread network. Apple says the following Apple devices are Thread-enabled for this purpose:
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, Wi-Fi + Ethernet)
- HomePod (2nd generation)
- HomePod mini
A compatible third-party Thread border router is another option. Buying or adding a hub is relevant only when the accessory uses Thread or Home explicitly shows one of these Thread requirements; it is not a universal remedy for every Matter pairing or response problem.

Understand the iPhone’s role
Apple’s iPhone user guide says a Thread-enabled iPhone can locally pair with and manage Thread accessories. That local capability does not remove the need for a hub or border router in every situation, especially for the home-wide Thread network and features that depend on it. If Home shows a Thread requirement, provide the required infrastructure rather than assuming the phone alone will cover it.

- Turn the Apple home hub off and back on.
- Use an iPhone or iPad signed in to the Apple account used for that Home.
- If an Apple TV is connected by Ethernet, connect it to Wi-Fi on the same network as the iPhone or iPad while testing, following Apple’s specific guidance for this condition.
- Move the accessory or hub away from sources of radio interference and retry.
- Turn on Bluetooth and check the manufacturer app for firmware, with special attention to battery-powered Thread accessories.
- Review Apple’s network-settings, VPN and security-software guidance if the network still cannot be established.
Do not remove a working Thread network or factory-reset a device merely because the alert appears once. First establish whether the missing element is a border router, account relationship, radio path or firmware update.
Fix an accessory that paired but shows “No Response”
Apple recommends checking after each step. Choose the path that matches the scope of the failure: one manufacturer or several.

Only one manufacturer’s accessories are affected
- Turn on Bluetooth. This is required for several local discovery and recovery operations.
- Restart each affected accessory. For a battery-powered device, remove and reinsert the batteries as the maker permits. For a powered device, use its normal power switch or unplug-and-reconnect procedure.
- Check the manufacturer app for firmware. Install updates offered for the exact model, then wait for the update to finish before testing Home.
- Restart the maker’s bridge and every Apple home hub. A bridge can be the shared failure point even when the individual accessories have power.
- For a third-party Thread accessory, disconnect power for five minutes. Reconnect it and wait ten minutes for the Thread network to stabilize before judging the result.
- Re-add only if necessary. Remove the accessory from Home, follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions, and add it again using the maker’s documented procedure.
If the manufacturer app also cannot control the accessory after its restart and firmware check, concentrate on the maker’s bridge, account and support process rather than repeatedly changing Apple Home settings.
Accessories from several manufacturers are affected
- Update the iPhone, iPad or Mac used to manage the Home.
- Close and reopen the Home app.
- Connect the Apple device to the same Wi-Fi network used by the affected accessories.
- Enable Bluetooth.
- Restart the affected accessories and check each manufacturer’s app for firmware updates.
- If Thread is involved, disconnect third-party Thread devices for five minutes, reconnect them and allow ten minutes for stabilization.
- Restart the modem or router, third-party bridges, all Apple home hubs, the accessories and the Apple device. Test after the restart sequence completes.
- Temporarily review VPN and third-party security software settings that could block local-home traffic, following Apple’s network guidance and your organization’s security policy.
Remote control when you are away from home requires a home hub to be set up. A missing home hub explains failed remote access, but it does not by itself explain every local “No Response” alert.

Choose the troubleshooting branch by symptom and scope
| Decision point | What to compare | Why it changes the next step |
|---|---|---|
| Symptom | Cannot add versus “No Response” | Pairing checks apply to the former; connectivity, firmware and hub checks apply to the latter. |
| Scope | One manufacturer versus several | One maker points toward its firmware, bridge or accessory; several point toward shared Wi-Fi, Apple software, hubs, router, VPN or security controls. |
| Transport | Wi-Fi versus Thread | Wi-Fi requires the model’s supported band; Thread requires a functioning Thread network and border router. |
| Prior pairing | New device versus used in another app or Home | An earlier pairing can require a maker-specific reset or a new Matter code. |
| Where it fails | Home only versus Home and the manufacturer app | Failure in both apps suggests the accessory, bridge, firmware or maker account; Home-only failure keeps Apple software and home-network paths in focus. |
Use the manufacturer’s instructions for reset and firmware
Apple’s general pages cannot provide a safe reset sequence for every Matter model. The manufacturer controls the button combination, hold time, indicator-light pattern, firmware channel and procedure for restoring a device after an interrupted update. Follow the manual or the maker’s app for that model. Do not apply a reset sequence copied from a different product.

Before resetting, record the accessory name, model number, current Home status, firmware version if visible, transport (Wi-Fi or Thread), exact alert, and whether it works in the manufacturer app. If the device was previously paired elsewhere, note the former app or Home. This prevents support from having to reconstruct the pairing history and helps determine whether a new Matter code is required.
Common mistakes that prolong the problem
- Using a Mac to add the accessory. Switch to an iPhone or iPad for the initial addition.
- Assuming every Matter accessory needs 2.4 GHz. Check the model; Apple’s warning applies to some accessories, not all.
- Buying a hub without checking the transport. A Thread border router helps a Thread accessory, not a generic Wi-Fi pairing failure.
- Resetting before checking prior ownership. If the device is still linked to another app or Home, use the maker’s documented removal or reset path.
- Ignoring the manufacturer app. Firmware and bridge status can explain a Home failure that Apple cannot repair from its own interface.
- Declaring a Thread failure immediately after reconnecting power. Apple’s guidance allows ten minutes after a five-minute power disconnect for the Thread network to stabilize.
- Changing several variables at once. Check after each Apple-recommended step so you know which action restored service.
When to contact support
Contact the accessory manufacturer when the device needs model-specific firmware, reset, bridge or pairing help, or when it fails in the manufacturer app. Provide the exact alert, model, transport, firmware version, pairing history, Apple device and software version, and the steps already completed.
Contact Apple Support when accessories from multiple manufacturers remain unavailable after the shared-network, software, hub, router and VPN/security checks. Keep the same details available, including whether the issue is local, remote or both. This division sends a device-specific fault to the maker and a cross-manufacturer Home or network fault to Apple.
Quick Recap
A concise recovery sequence
- Copy the exact on-screen wording: “Unable to add to home,” “No Response,” “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network.”
- Record model, Wi-Fi or Thread, prior pairing, Apple device and software, and manufacturer-app behavior.
- For adding: use an updated iPhone or iPad with Bluetooth, verify compatibility and power, use the correct Matter code, check the model’s Wi-Fi band, restart bridges and hubs, and reset only with the maker’s instructions.
- For Thread alerts: provide a Thread border router, verify the Apple account and network relationship, check interference and firmware, and allow the prescribed stabilization time.
- For “No Response”: follow the one-maker or several-maker branch, checking firmware, hubs, Wi-Fi, router, VPN and security software in that order.
- Escalate with the recorded details instead of repeating an unverified factory-reset sequence.
