If your Nintendo Switch 2 can reach the internet but Mario Kart World will not join a match, start by checking NAT type, latency and the other player’s connection—not by buying a new router. On the HOME Menu, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection, note the results, and use them to choose the next step. A successful internet test does not guarantee that peer-to-peer matchmaking will work.

First, identify which connection problem you have

There are two different problems that can look alike. If the console cannot get online at all, check the home internet connection and Nintendo’s live service status. If the console is online but cannot join a match—or disconnects as one begins—the issue may be NAT compatibility, latency, wireless conditions, or the other player’s network. Nintendo’s matchmaking troubleshooting guide is specifically for players who can get online but cannot connect to others or are often disconnected when a match starts.

  • Console cannot connect to the internet: troubleshoot the network connection first. For error codes from 2321-0000 through 2321-9999, Nintendo also recommends checking its Network Status page for maintenance or an outage.
  • Console is online, but a match fails: run the connection test and investigate NAT, latency, stability, and whether the problem involves one particular player.
  • Only one friend or opponent is unreachable: their network may be part of the problem. Ask them to run the same checks rather than changing your router immediately.

A match can fail even when the internet test succeeds because online play between consoles depends on their ability to communicate with one another. Nintendo notes that both players’ NAT types matter, and high latency can cause matchmaking to time out even when the reported NAT type and speeds look acceptable. See Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting guidance for Switch 2 and Switch.

Pay attention to when the failure occurs. A console that never reaches Nintendo services points first to an internet or service-status problem. A console that can use online services but cannot join a particular match calls for matchmaking checks. If the failure appears only when a match starts, note that detail as well: Nintendo’s matchmaking guide covers players who are frequently disconnected at that point.

Check the game, membership and Nintendo service status

Before changing network settings, confirm that Mario Kart World is updated and that you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo lists both as requirements for online play in its Mario Kart World multiplayer instructions.

If your error code is in the 2321-0000 to 2321-9999 range, check Nintendo’s Network Status page for a listed service outage or maintenance and retry after service is restored. Nintendo’s support page for that error-code range also recommends restarting the console and troubleshooting NAT if online matches fail consistently. The range is general Nintendo Switch support guidance, not a Mario Kart World-only error category.

When you check status, distinguish a Nintendo service interruption from a home-network fault. Note whether the console’s connection test succeeds and whether other online services work. If the console is online but matchmaking alone fails, continue with the peer-to-peer checks below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Service status can change, so check Nintendo’s current status page when the error occurs rather than assuming an old report still applies. If there is a listed outage or maintenance, retry after Nintendo reports service restored before making disruptive changes to your home network.

Run the Switch 2 connection test and record the result

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection.
  2. Write down the reported NAT type, download speed and upload speed. Keep the results so you can compare them after each change.
  3. Make one troubleshooting change at a time, then run the test again. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped or made the connection worse.

Nintendo prefers NAT type A for peer-to-peer communication and says type B is compatible with most other NAT types. Its matchmaking guide also uses a 3 Mbps download threshold as a diagnostic branch. Treat that figure as one part of Nintendo’s troubleshooting flow, not as a guarantee that a connection with that speed—or any particular speed—will be stable enough for every match. Upload speed, latency, packet stability and the other player’s network also matter.

Speed tests are snapshots. If results vary, run the console test again after a network change and consider whether the problem is intermittent. A good-looking speed result does not rule out high latency, restrictive NAT or a peer-to-peer compatibility issue.

Use the results together, not in isolation. NAT is a compatibility clue, the download and upload figures show the measured connection speed, and a repeat test can reveal whether the result changes after a specific adjustment. Nintendo warns that latency can still make matchmaking time out when NAT and speeds appear acceptable. That is why a high speed number alone cannot confirm that a match will connect reliably.

Use NAT type as a compatibility clue

NAT describes how your router or network handles connections between devices and the wider internet. For console matchmaking, the useful question is not simply whether your console has internet access; it is whether your network can establish the connection needed with another player. Nintendo cautions that the other player’s NAT type affects the outcome too.

NAT result What Nintendo’s guidance says What to do
A Preferred for peer-to-peer communication; generally indicates a network environment that works well for connecting with other players. If matchmaking still fails, check latency, stability and the other player’s connection rather than assuming NAT is the only cause.
B Compatible with most other NAT types. Continue with wireless or wired troubleshooting if matches still fail; type B does not guarantee compatibility with every network.
C May have difficulty connecting to users with stricter NAT types. Check Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting for your modem/router setup and test again after any change.
D Poor for peer-to-peer connections; generally able to connect only with type A. Investigate the router and internet-provider setup using Nintendo’s guidance. Do not assume one setting will work for every network.
F Unable to complete peer-to-peer communication. Work through the NAT-related troubleshooting for your network arrangement, then retest.

The descriptions above are Nintendo’s general networking guidance, not a guarantee about a particular opponent or router. Modem/router combinations, provider configurations and other network arrangements differ. Follow the relevant steps in Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting article, changing only one setting at a time and rerunning the console test after each change.

Do not read a restrictive result as proof that your router is broken. NAT reflects the network path and configuration, which can involve the modem/router arrangement and internet provider. Nintendo’s guidance does not promise that one router setting will correct every setup. Make only changes appropriate to your equipment and connection, then use a new test result to check the effect.

If you use Wi-Fi, test the signal and interference

If the connection test does not point to an obvious NAT or speed problem, check the wireless setup. Nintendo’s suggested changes are tests, not universal fixes: a change such as disabling IPv6 may help isolate a problem on one network and be unnecessary or disruptive on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Try the saved network with IPv6 turned off. In the saved internet connection’s settings, toggle IPv6 off and test matchmaking again. If that causes other network problems or makes no difference, restore the previous setting.
  2. Move closer to the router. Remove the console from the dock and test within 10–15 feet (about 3–5 metres) of the router, as Nintendo recommends for wireless troubleshooting.
  3. Reduce possible interference. Move metal objects and electronics that may interfere away from the router and console, then retest.
  4. Power-cycle the modem and router. Turn the networking equipment off, wait briefly, turn it back on, allow it to reconnect, and then rerun the console connection test.

If a close-range test works but the usual position does not, that is evidence to investigate the wireless path—distance, obstacles or interference—rather than proof that a new router or extender is required. If the close-range test also fails, compare NAT and speed results and check whether another player has the same issue.

Keep the comparison fair: change one condition, such as moving the console closer, then test again before trying the next step. If several changes happen at once, it becomes difficult to know which condition affected the result. A wireless improvement may help with stability, but it will not necessarily resolve a restrictive NAT or a problem on the other player’s connection.

If you use a wired connection, isolate the cable and network path

A wired test can help determine whether Wi-Fi conditions are involved, but it is not a general-purpose matchmaking cure. On Switch 2, wired internet requires the console to be docked. Nintendo’s wired troubleshooting includes checking the modem/router path and testing whether an existing Ethernet cable is faulty.

  1. Power-cycle the modem and router, then rerun the console connection test.
  2. If practical, connect the console directly to the modem to isolate other network devices. Restart the modem as part of the test.
  3. If the connection remains unreliable, try a different Ethernet cable. This is a way to determine whether the original cable is damaged or no longer working, not a reason to replace a cable that is already functioning normally.
  4. After each change, test the connection and matchmaking again so you can identify which part of the setup affects the result.

If connecting directly to the modem changes the result, the router or another device on the network may be involved. If the same problem persists through the modem and affects other devices, Nintendo recommends contacting your internet service provider.

Wired and wireless are useful comparison points, not competing products that one must always choose over the other. A wired test can isolate whether wireless conditions appear relevant; it cannot by itself eliminate latency, NAT incompatibility or another player’s network as possible causes. Buy a replacement cable only if you need one for a wired setup or the existing cable appears faulty.

Check whether the other player or network type is involved

If the problem happens with one particular player but not with others, ask that person to run the Switch connection test and check their NAT type, speeds and connection stability. Nintendo says another player’s network can cause connection trouble, so changing your own settings repeatedly may not solve a one-to-one compatibility issue.

Some types of internet service may be less suitable for peer-to-peer play. Nintendo’s error guidance cautions that mobile hotspots or 5G networks may prevent peer-to-peer connections. For the 2618-0514 scenario, Nintendo suggests trying another network, preferably a cable, DSL or fiber connection. A different network is a diagnostic comparison; it does not prove that every connection of that type will work or that every problem on the original network is caused by the provider.

Use the pattern of failures to decide what to test next. If all players fail to join, begin with your own console, network and Nintendo service status. If one particular player is unreachable, compare notes and have that person test their connection too. If the same player can join other people but not you, the two networks may be incompatible with each other even though each can access the internet.

What the common error codes mean

Error code Nintendo’s stated meaning and scope Useful next action
2618-0514 Nintendo says this generally means multiple players had a suboptimal network connection during matchmaking. Possible factors include restrictive NAT, latency or an internet service type Nintendo does not recommend. The player-facing message is “Unable to connect to the other console(s). Please try again later.” The support page applies to Switch and Switch 2 games generally; it is not exclusive to Mario Kart World. Check NAT and latency, ask the other player to check their connection, or compare with another network. Nintendo recommends cable, DSL or fiber for this scenario.
2618-0513 Nintendo says this usually indicates a network that is not optimal for peer-to-peer matchmaking, potentially because of the provider, connection speed or NAT. Its guidance notes that mobile hotspots and 5G may prevent peer-to-peer connections. Retry, check NAT and test another network if available. See Nintendo’s 2618-0513 support page.
2321-0000 through 2321-9999 Nintendo’s general Switch support guidance recommends checking for an outage or maintenance. The range is not identified as Mario Kart World-specific. Check Nintendo Network Status, restart the console, and troubleshoot NAT if online matches continue to fail. See Nintendo’s guidance for this range.

For 2618-0514, Nintendo’s exact message is “Unable to connect to the other console(s). Please try again later.” Its 2618-0514 support page describes the code as a matchmaking connection problem, not a diagnosis of one specific faulty component. Use the code to choose relevant checks, not as proof that your console, router or provider alone is at fault.

Error codes narrow the troubleshooting path but do not identify a single failed part. For 2618-0514, check both players’ network conditions and consider NAT, latency or service type. For 2618-0513, review provider, speed and NAT possibilities. For the 2321-0000 to 2321-9999 range, check service status as well as the console and network. Follow the code’s scope carefully: Nintendo’s cited pages describe Switch networking generally, rather than establishing that these are Mario Kart World-only errors.

Escalate without losing useful router settings

If a different network works while your normal connection does not, contact your internet provider and ask whether the connection has restrictions affecting peer-to-peer communication. If the issue appears specific to your router, Nintendo recommends contacting its manufacturer about firmware updates or resetting the router to factory settings.

A factory reset may erase custom network settings. Before resetting, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and record any configuration you need to restore. If the same problem persists when connected directly through the modem and other devices are affected too, contact the internet provider rather than continuing to change console settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a useful support conversation, keep a short record of the error code, whether the console connection test succeeds, the NAT type and speed results, whether you were on Wi-Fi or wired, and whether the problem affected one player or everyone. This gives the provider or router manufacturer concrete observations without assuming the cause.

Escalate based on what your comparisons show. A different network that succeeds points to a difference in the original connection worth discussing with the ISP. A problem that appears only through one router makes the router manufacturer a sensible next contact. If the failure remains when connected directly through the modem and other devices also have problems, Nintendo’s guidance is to contact the ISP. Avoid jumping to a factory reset before recording the settings you may need to restore.

Do not confuse online matchmaking with LAN Play

Mario Kart World LAN Play is a separate wired mode for a local group, not a routine fix for public online matchmaking. Nintendo says it supports 2–24 players, with up to two players per console. Its setup requires Switch 2 consoles and docks, a copy of the game, an Ethernet cable for each player or pair, a television or monitor, and a shared wired router. A network switch may be needed if the router does not have enough LAN ports; all consoles must connect through the same shared router.

That equipment list applies to the LAN setup. For ordinary online matchmaking, Nintendo’s guidance does not establish that buying a new Ethernet cable, router or Wi-Fi extender generally improves matchmaking. A cable is relevant if you are setting up LAN Play, need a wired connection, or are replacing an existing cable that tests faulty. Start with the free connection test and targeted troubleshooting instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, LAN Play is an equipment-dependent local setup: each player or pair needs a cable connection to the shared router, and consoles must be docked for wired internet. Check the router’s available LAN ports; Nintendo notes that a network switch may be necessary when there are not enough. Do not buy this equipment just to troubleshoot ordinary online matchmaking unless you have a separate need for a wired setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can Mario Kart World fail to join a match when my Switch 2 is online?

A successful internet test does not guarantee peer-to-peer matchmaking. Nintendo identifies restrictive NAT and high latency as possible causes, and the other player’s NAT and network conditions can matter too. Run the console connection test and compare results after one change at a time.

What NAT type is best for Mario Kart World online?

Nintendo says NAT type A is preferred for peer-to-peer communication and type B is compatible with most other NAT types. Type C may have difficulty with stricter NAT types, type D generally connects only with type A, and type F cannot complete peer-to-peer communication. These are compatibility clues, not guarantees for every opponent.

What does error 2618-0514 mean?

Nintendo says error 2618-0514 generally means multiple players had a suboptimal network connection during matchmaking. Possible factors include restrictive NAT, latency or an internet service type Nintendo does not recommend. Nintendo suggests trying another network, preferably cable, DSL or fiber. The code is not specific to Mario Kart World.

Will an Ethernet cable or new router fix matchmaking?

Not necessarily. Nintendo’s guidance does not establish that buying new networking equipment is a general matchmaking fix. A cable can help test wired conditions, replace an existing cable that appears faulty, or support LAN Play. Start with the free Switch 2 connection test and targeted checks.

What do I need for Mario Kart World LAN Play?

Nintendo says LAN Play supports 2–24 players, up to two players per console. The setup uses Switch 2 consoles and docks, a game copy, an Ethernet cable for each player or pair, a television or monitor, and one shared wired router. A network switch may be needed if the router lacks enough LAN ports.

The Bottom Line

Start with the Switch 2 connection test, record NAT type and speeds, and change one thing at a time. Check Nintendo Network Status for the relevant service errors, compare with another player or network when possible, and contact the ISP or router manufacturer based on what those tests show. Buy a cable only when you need wired connectivity, LAN Play equipment, or a replacement for a cable that is faulty.
