MariaDB failing at the same minute each day is usually a scheduling clue, not a random database defect. Correlate that minute and its timezone with cron jobs, systemd timers, logrotate, backups, reporting queries, maintenance scripts and resource limits. Preserve the MariaDB error log, system journal and kernel messages before repeatedly restarting the service; MariaDB documentation says the reason a start fails will almost certainly be in the error log or, for a manual start, the console.
What a fixed crash time tells you
A failure that occurs at 01:00, 02:30 or another repeatable time narrows the search dramatically. Something scheduled may be stopping MariaDB, rotating a file, creating a load spike, exhausting a limit or causing the operating system to kill the process. The clock alone does not prove causation: a backup can start at 02:00 while an unrelated memory leak happens to become fatal at 02:07. Treat the match as a hypothesis and verify it in logs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Record the exact event, including the timezone shown by the host, before changing anything:
- Timestamp with timezone and the number of incidents observed.
- Hostname, container or virtual machine, MariaDB version and exact build.
- Service unit name (often
mariadb.serviceormysql.service). - What clients see: connection refusal, timeout, authentication errors or data errors.
- Whether the service restarts automatically, enters crash recovery or stays stopped.
Compare several incidents if possible. A timer that runs at the same local time may appear one hour different after a daylight-saving change, while a UTC-based scheduler remains fixed. Check the server’s clock and timezone with date -Is and timedatectl on Linux, and use the same timezone when comparing application, backup and database logs.

Preserve evidence before restarting repeatedly
Every restart can overwrite the most useful context, rotate a log or remove a core file. Capture the failure window first, then restart only when service availability requires it.
- Copy the MariaDB error log and note its ownership, timestamps and size.
- Save the service journal around the failure minute:
sudo journalctl -u mariadb --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:00" --until "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:59" --no-pager. Substitute the real interval and unit name. - Save kernel messages for the same interval:
sudo journalctl -k --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:00" --until "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:59" --no-pager. - Record scheduler definitions and the output of the backup, monitoring or maintenance jobs that ran then.
- Preserve any crash stack trace, core dump metadata and the exact MariaDB package or binary version.
MariaDB’s error-log guidance identifies the error log or console as the primary source for a startup failure. The error log also receives a crash stack trace after a server crash, so do not discard it when the service appears to start normally afterward.

Read the MariaDB error log first
Find the path configured by log_error. Common Linux locations include /var/log/ and /var/log/mysql; on Windows, the MariaDB data directory commonly contains the error log. The configured path, not a guessed default, is authoritative.
Search the entries immediately before and after the failure for these terms:
| Evidence in the log | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
SIGKILL, “killed process” or an abrupt end with no orderly shutdown |
The operator, service manager or operating system terminated MariaDB; an out-of-memory event is a common OS cause. | Kernel OOM records, cgroup limits, service timeouts and scheduled jobs. |
InnoDB semaphore wait, especially a wait exceeding 600 seconds |
A severe InnoDB stall that may meet MariaDB’s documented crash-report conditions. | Complete error log, stack trace, workload and storage health; prepare a full backtrace. |
| Fatal signal, assertion failure, illegal instruction or hardware fault | A true process crash rather than a clean administrative stop. | Exact build, CPU/platform details, crash report and relevant query or plugin. |
| Corruption, checksum, redo or page errors | Storage or data-integrity trouble that can make startup or recovery fail. | Storage diagnostics and a recovery plan; avoid destructive file deletion. |
| “Can’t open,” permission or authentication errors | A rotation, startup or maintenance command cannot access a file or connect. | Path ownership, modes, SELinux/AppArmor policy, credentials and post-rotation command status. |
| “Shutdown complete” followed by a later start | A controlled stop, not necessarily a crash. | Identify which user, timer, script or service dependency requested the stop. |
Do not interpret an automatic restart as proof that the database is healthy. Systemd can restart a process after a fatal signal, and InnoDB can perform crash recovery before accepting connections. The preceding failure lines remain essential.

Correlate systemd, cron and other scheduled work
Inspect the service state and journal around the exact minute:
sudo systemctl status mariadb --no-pagershows the last state, exit code and recent messages.sudo journalctl -u mariadb -b --no-pagerprovides the boot’s full service history; narrow it with--sinceand--untilwhen reviewing an incident.systemctl list-timers --alllists systemd timers, their last run and next run. Check both system and user timers where applicable.- Review
/etc/cron.daily,/etc/cron.hourly,/etc/crontab, files in/etc/cron.d/and the relevant user’s crontab withcrontab -l. - Inspect
/etc/logrotate.d/, backup scripts, report generators, certificate-renewal hooks, monitoring actions and application maintenance jobs.
A scheduled task can call a stop command, request a log flush, create enough disk or I/O pressure to trigger failure, or run inside a memory-limited service. Confirm a relationship by matching process start, command output, exit status and resource evidence in the same minute. A coincidental timestamp is not sufficient.
Distinguish a requested stop from a kill
A clean stop normally leaves an orderly shutdown sequence in the MariaDB log and a successful service exit in the journal. A kill may show an exit status associated with a signal, a journal message that the process was terminated, or no shutdown sequence at all. If a service manager waits and then kills MariaDB, capture the stop timeout and the resource or I/O messages that came before it.
Test whether logrotate is the trigger
Daily log rotation is a plausible explanation when the failure occurs at the rotation time. MariaDB’s Unix/Linux guidance describes a rule that rotates daily, executes a postrotate command, uses sharedscripts, compresses old files and applies delaycompress. The postrotate action uses mariadb-admin flush commands so MariaDB closes old handles and opens the new log files.
Rotation can fail when the account cannot authenticate, paths have incorrect ownership, a shell command returns an error, compression races with a file MariaDB is still writing, or an external rule rotates the wrong file. Inspect the installed rule rather than copying an unrelated example:

- Confirm the error-log path in the rule exactly matches
log_error. - Check that the rotation account can run the configured
mariadb-admincommand and authenticate without exposing credentials in process listings or world-readable files. - Verify directory ownership, file modes and any mandatory-access-control policy.
- Check the postrotate command’s exit status in scheduler or logrotate output.
- Confirm compression is delayed when recommended, so the newest rotated file is not compressed while handles are being reopened.
In a maintenance window, force one controlled test with:
sudo logrotate --force /etc/logrotate.d/mariadb
Immediately verify that MariaDB remains active, the expected new error log is receiving entries, the old file has the intended name and ownership, and no authentication or flush error appeared. A successful forced rotation demonstrates that the rule works under those conditions; it does not prove the nightly event caused every prior crash.
Do not externally rotate MariaDB binary logs
Binary logs are different from the text error log. MariaDB manages binary-log rotation internally with settings such as max_binlog_size and retention controls. Applying a generic external logrotate rule to binary-log files can break the server’s file-handling assumptions and retention policy. Review and change MariaDB’s binary-log settings instead.
Check disk space and inode exhaustion
Inspect every filesystem involved in the event: the data directory, error and general logs, temporary files, relay or binary logs and backup destination.
df -h
df -i
A filesystem can have free bytes but no free inodes, or adequate space on the data volume while a separate log partition is full. MariaDB security guidance warns that a log filling the storage partition can make the server crash or hang. Look for a rapidly growing unmanaged log, failed compression, a backup that shares the same volume, and stale binary or relay logs.

- Record usage before cleanup so the cause is not erased.
- Use the retention policy to remove or archive files; do not delete active InnoDB data, redo logs or binary logs indiscriminately.
- Correct the rotation rule and alert threshold so the filesystem cannot silently fill again.
- Check that the MariaDB user can create and write the post-rotation file.
Check memory pressure, OOM and service limits
MariaDB documents that the operating system may kill the server during an out-of-memory event in an attempt to reclaim memory. Search the kernel journal for OOM-killer messages, “out of memory,” “killed process” and cgroup-limit notifications. Also inspect the MariaDB service journal for SIGKILL or a signal-based exit.
Capture a baseline and compare it with the scheduled event:
free -h
systemctl show mariadb -p MemoryMax -p TasksMax -p TimeoutStopUSec
sudo journalctl -k --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:00" --until "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:59" --no-pager
Review scheduled backups, reporting queries, exports, batch imports and table-maintenance jobs for a daily memory or I/O peak. A database can be within its normal limits at noon and exceed a cgroup or host limit when a backup and report run together. If no OOM evidence exists, do not label a failure as memory-related solely because it happened during a busy period.

Investigate backups, reports and maintenance jobs
Nightly backups often read large portions of the data, create temporary files and compress output. Reporting queries can hold transactions or consume temporary space. Batch imports can produce a simultaneous CPU, memory and disk burst. For each scheduled job, record its start and end times, command, exit code, destination filesystem and whether it invokes MariaDB administrative commands.
Compare those records with:
- MariaDB connection, lock and InnoDB messages.
- Disk latency, filesystem-full warnings and temporary-directory usage.
- Kernel OOM or hardware messages.
- Service-manager stop, timeout and restart events.
If moving the job to a different time makes the crash disappear, that is useful correlation but not a root-cause fix. Correct the query, memory limit, backup concurrency, destination capacity or shutdown behavior that made the overlap unsafe.

Handle a genuine MariaDB crash safely
Escalate when the error log reports an InnoDB semaphore wait over 600 seconds, fatal signal, illegal instruction, hardware fault, assertion failure or corruption. Preserve the complete log, exact MariaDB build, operating-system and CPU details, storage information and the SQL workload active at the time.
MariaDB requests full backtraces for several crash classes. If a query appears implicated, include its EXPLAIN output and SHOW CREATE TABLE results with the crash report. Keep the original evidence immutable and work from a copy when possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not delete InnoDB data files or redo files as a first response. Take a filesystem or storage snapshot according to your recovery policy, confirm that backups are usable and involve the person responsible for database recovery before attempting repair operations. Removing files can turn a recoverable crash into permanent data loss.
Verify the fix across more than one cycle
After changing a timer, cron entry, rotation rule, resource limit or MariaDB setting, observe the next scheduled run and at least one additional cycle when practical. A fix is credible only when the expected job completes and all of these checks pass:
- The MariaDB service remains active and accepts a test connection.
- The intended error-log file is open, writable by the MariaDB account and receiving current timestamps.
- Disk bytes and inodes remain within policy after rotation and backup completion.
- No matching OOM, SIGKILL, permission, authentication or flush error appears.
- InnoDB recovery does not recur and clients do not report timeouts or data errors.
- The scheduler records a successful exit for the job that previously coincided with the failure.
Keep the before-and-after timestamps and configuration change in the incident record. If the failure returns at a shifted time after a timezone or daylight-saving transition, repeat the correlation using the host’s current timezone rather than assuming the original schedule is unchanged.
A practical decision framework
| Primary observation | Most useful branch | Evidence that confirms it |
|---|---|---|
| Exact minute matches a timer, cron job or rotation | Audit the job and its MariaDB interaction. | Matching start time plus stop, flush, permission or resource messages. |
| Journal reports OOM or SIGKILL | Investigate host and service memory limits. | Kernel kill record, memory peak or cgroup-limit event. |
| Filesystem reaches 100% or zero inodes | Correct retention and rotation, then restore capacity safely. | Full-volume warning and a growing log, backup or temporary file. |
| Orderly shutdown appears in MariaDB log | Find the actor that requested the stop. | Timer, script, operator or dependency log with a successful stop. |
| Fatal signal, assertion, corruption or long InnoDB wait | Collect crash-report material and follow recovery policy. | Stack trace, build/platform details and reproducible workload evidence. |
| No scheduler match and no resource evidence | Broaden the search to hardware, storage, networking and application behavior. | Repeated incidents with comparable database or kernel signatures. |
Common mistakes that prolong the outage
- Restarting until the original error log is rotated away.
- Assuming logrotate is guilty because it runs at the same time, without checking postrotate status or kernel evidence.
- Using an external rotation rule on MariaDB binary logs.
- Deleting InnoDB files, redo logs or binary logs to make a failed start “clean.”
- Checking only free gigabytes and ignoring inodes, temporary space and cgroup limits.
- Comparing application local time with a server or container running in UTC.
- Declaring success after one manual restart instead of observing the next scheduled run.
When to involve a database specialist
Get specialist help when corruption, repeated crash recovery, hardware errors, unexplained fatal signals or an unreproducible crash persists after scheduling and resource causes are excluded. Provide the unedited error log, journal and kernel excerpts, exact version and build, platform and CPU details, configuration changes, scheduler definitions, storage and memory measurements, and any relevant EXPLAIN or SHOW CREATE TABLE output. That package lets an investigator distinguish a clean administrative stop, an operating-system kill and an internal MariaDB defect without guessing.
