Marathon problems fall into three different categories, and the correct fix depends on which one you have. Stuttering or frame drops mean the game is running unevenly; a crash means the application closes, freezes permanently, or causes a system-level failure; connection problems include sign-in errors, lag, rubber-banding, and disconnections. They do not share one universal cause.
Before changing local settings, check Bungie’s live Marathon Server and Update Status page and the BNGServerStatus notices it references. Scheduled or emergency maintenance can make sign-in, updates, and matchmaking fail even when your PC and network are working normally.
Identify the symptom before changing anything
Stuttering, frame drops, and freezing during play
Stuttering appears as uneven frame delivery, sudden drops in frames per second (FPS), or brief pauses while the game remains open. A game that becomes smooth when you lower a graphics option is showing a performance bottleneck, not necessarily a network fault.
Crashes
A crash is an application that closes to the desktop, stops responding and must be terminated, or triggers a Windows-level failure. Crashes can come from configuration files, drivers, operating-system problems, installation issues, or hardware limits. Performance tuning may reduce load, but Bungie’s high-FPS guidance is not a universal crash fix.

Connection errors
Connection trouble includes failure to sign in, disconnections from a run, visible lag, and rubber-banding. High latency (the delay before data reaches the server and returns) and packet loss (data that never arrives) are different network conditions, although both can produce poor play.
Check Marathon’s service status first
Open Bungie’s Marathon Server and Update Status page before troubleshooting your router or reinstalling the game. Follow its BNGServerStatus updates for live information about outages, deployments, and maintenance. A maintenance entry dated October 8, 2026, for Update 1.1.9.3 was historical when the status page was reviewed; do not treat it as a current outage. Check the live page on the day you are playing.
If the service is degraded, wait for the affected service to recover and avoid repeatedly changing local settings. If no incident is listed, continue with the checks below and record exactly what fails: launch, sign-in, matchmaking, loading into a run, or play after deployment.

Compare your PC with Bungie’s requirements
Bungie’s Marathon Storage and System Requirements page lists the following Windows requirements (accessed October 11, 2026):
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core i5-6600 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Intel Core i5-10400 / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB) / AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (4 GB) / Intel Arc A580 (8 GB, ReBAR on) | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (6 GB) / AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (8 GB) / Intel Arc A770 (16 GB, ReBAR on) |
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit (latest Service Pack) | Windows 10 64-bit (latest Service Pack) |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Internet | Broadband Internet connection | Broadband Internet connection |
| Bungie’s separate “RAM” line | 6 GB | 8 GB |
The page contains both a “Memory” line and a separate “RAM” line; they are reproduced as Bungie labels them rather than combined or silently corrected. Compare your actual CPU, graphics card, installed memory, Windows edition, and DirectX version with each line. A system below minimum requirements can explain low or unstable performance, but meeting minimum specifications does not guarantee a particular FPS.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Bungie says a laptop that meets or exceeds the minimum may be able to play, but laptop configurations are not officially supported. Mobile power limits, cooling, switchable graphics, and manufacturer drivers can therefore make laptop behavior differ from a similarly specified desktop.
Use a reversible process to isolate stuttering
1. Establish a consistent baseline
- Update Windows and your graphics driver to current releases.
- Launch Marathon at 1,920 × 1,080 (1080p), set the graphics preset to Medium, turn VSync off, and disable any frame-rate cap.
- Enable the in-game FPS counter or the Steam FPS overlay.
- Test the same location and activity for several minutes, noting the average FPS, sudden drops, and whether the problem is worse in a particular map.
This baseline follows Bungie’s starting point for investigating a 120-plus-FPS target. It is a diagnostic setup, not a promise that every PC can reach 120 FPS.
2. Test whether the GPU is the limit
Keep the game at Medium, temporarily disable anti-aliasing, and set Render Resolution to 25 percent. The image will look extremely poor; use this only as a test. If FPS rises substantially, the GPU or graphics workload is limiting performance. Restore a usable render resolution after testing and adjust visual settings gradually.
3. Test whether CPU work is the limit
Return render resolution to a normal value, then lower these settings one at a time:
- Environment Detail Distance
- Character Detail Distance
- Foliage Detail Distance
- Field of View (FOV), if necessary
If lowering those options produces little or no FPS improvement, leave them at Medium and avoid sacrificing image quality for a bottleneck they do not affect. A large improvement indicates that CPU-side scene and object processing is constraining frames.

Why a faster graphics card is not always the answer
Bungie describes Marathon as a multithreaded title and its first shipped game with DirectX 12 support. Each frame involves simulation CPU work, render CPU work, and GPU work; “the game will only run as fast as the slowest of these tasks.” Some portions can still depend on single-thread performance. Dense environments, including Outpost and Cryo Archive, may therefore behave differently from less demanding areas.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the two tests above rather than assuming that a GPU upgrade will solve every drop. A GPU-limited result points toward graphics settings or graphics hardware. A CPU-limited result points toward processor performance, scene-detail settings, background CPU load, or a map-specific workload. If neither test changes FPS, the limit may be elsewhere and you should preserve the baseline results for support.
Safe software and configuration checks
Keep Windows and drivers current
Bungie’s requirements guidance recommends a current operating system and current hardware drivers. Install updates through Windows Update and your GPU manufacturer’s normal driver channel, then restart before retesting. Record the driver version and the date of the update so you can identify whether the behavior changed.
Clear Steam’s download cache for Steam-side issues
When an update, download, or Steam-managed installation behaves incorrectly, Bungie suggests clearing Steam’s download cache. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, sign in again if prompted, and retry the download or launch. This process can remove cached download data; it does not repair a server outage or raise the PC’s performance ceiling.

Replace USERNAME with your Windows account name. On the next launch, Marathon recreates the file. This resets custom in-game settings to their defaults, so write down or capture any sensitivity, graphics, keybind, and accessibility choices you want to restore. Deleting this file is a configuration reset, not a guarantee against every crash.
How to stop Marathon from crashing
First determine whether the crash is repeatable at a particular point (startup, loading a map, entering a run, or after changing a setting) or appears randomly. That timing helps separate a configuration or installation problem from a broader system failure.
- Confirm the PC meets the requirements table and that Windows and graphics drivers are current.
- Undo any overclock, undervolt, or experimental driver setting while testing.
- Use the Medium 1080p baseline and remove custom settings by regenerating
CVARS.xmlif the crash began after a settings change. - For Steam download or installation behavior, clear the download cache as described above and retry.
- Check whether the same action still crashes after a full game restart and a Windows restart.
If Windows itself restarts, shows a blue screen, or loses power, treat that as a system-stability issue rather than an ordinary game crash. Capture the Windows error details and hardware information for support. If only Marathon closes, include the exact location and action that preceded the closure when reporting it. Bungie’s general PC guidance directs unresolved problems to the Marathon Help Forums; it does not promise that any single step fixes all crash causes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can’t I connect to Marathon?
Follow this order so you do not mistake a service incident for a home-network problem.
- Check service status. Review the live status page and BNGServerStatus notices for maintenance or an outage.
- Record the exact error code. Take a screenshot or copy the complete code, including its spelling and capitalization.
- Open the dedicated code article. Bungie’s Error Codes: Disconnected From Marathon page distinguishes platform codes from Marathon codes. The correct support channel and troubleshooting path can differ by code.
- Restart the application. For a disconnect, relaunch Marathon before trying more invasive changes.
- Use the branch that matches your code pattern. A repeated identical code can indicate a shared root issue; several different codes more often suggest unstable connectivity, although neither pattern proves a cause.
- Test the connection path. Prefer Ethernet when practical, then work through the Wi-Fi and network-hardware checks below.
Repeated identical disconnect code
When the same code returns after each attempt, Bungie suggests restarting the game, restarting or clearing the relevant platform cache where applicable, switching from Wi-Fi to a wired connection, and following the instructions on that code’s page. Do not substitute a generic fix for the code-specific instructions.

Several different disconnect codes
Bungie identifies network instability as a frequent possibility when codes vary. Power-cycle the modem and router, then contact your internet provider about traffic congestion, connection stability, or packet loss if the problem persists. A changing code sequence is evidence to investigate the path between your PC and the service, not proof that the game installation is damaged.
Prefer wired internet, then improve Wi-Fi conditions
Bungie’s Network Setup: Wi-Fi v. Wired Connections guide states: “For the best Marathon experience, Bungie recommends players use a wired internet connection instead of Wi-Fi.” If you can test Ethernet, an ordinary Ethernet cable is a simple way to bypass wireless interference temporarily. It cannot repair a server outage, unsupported hardware, every form of packet loss, or a game crash.
When wired testing is not practical, Bungie’s Wi-Fi suggestions are:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Move the PC closer to the access point.
- Reduce walls, furniture, and other obstructions between the PC and access point.
- Disconnect or pause competing devices and downloads while playing.
- Select a less congested wireless channel on the router.
- Disable channel bonding if your router’s configuration and local interference make that appropriate.
Bungie does not recommend mobile internet for Marathon; variable mobile conditions can produce frequent error codes or crew-related problems. The same guide estimates that Marathon may request up to 1 Mbps upload and 1 Mbps download, and that live gameplay can use up to 1 GB per hour. These are Bungie’s estimates, not a guarantee that every session continuously uses those rates; play behavior and game updates change actual traffic. Other activity on the connection can still affect latency and packet loss even when your nominal broadband speed is much higher.
Separate lag, latency, and packet loss
Bungie’s Marathon Network Troubleshooting Guide describes lag as a noticeable delay and gives rubber-banding as an example. High latency means packets take too long to complete the round trip; packet loss means some packets fail to arrive. Both can make movement and combat appear erratic, but the remedies differ.
- If only wireless play is affected and Ethernet is stable, focus on signal strength, interference, channel selection, and competing devices.
- If both wired and wireless connections fail while the service is operational, investigate the router, modem, ISP path, or packet loss.
- If other online services also fail at the same time, record the timing and contact the ISP after checking local hardware.
- If Marathon alone fails with a consistent code, follow that code’s article and include the code in a support report.
What happens when you disconnect during a run?
Bungie says the shell remains in the world after a disconnection and recommends reconnecting promptly. Gear return is limited to a subset of server-side error conditions. It does not cover losses caused by internet problems or client-side issues, so do not assume that reconnecting will restore every item.
When to contact support
After checking status, reproducing the issue with the baseline, and following the relevant code or network branch, post unresolved PC problems in the Marathon Help Forums as directed by Bungie’s PC guidance. For Steam account, client, or installation problems, use Steam support where appropriate.
Include:
- CPU, GPU, installed memory, and whether the system is a laptop or desktop
- Windows version and graphics-driver version
- Marathon and platform version, if shown
- What changed immediately before the issue began
- Whether the problem is stuttering, a crash, sign-in failure, lag, or a disconnect
- The exact error code and whether it repeats or varies
- When it occurs and whether Ethernet changes the result
This information lets support distinguish a performance limit, a client configuration problem, a platform issue, and a network or service condition without guessing.
