Low frame rates, sudden hitches, and late-loading textures are different problems. Start by identifying which symptom you have, then change one relevant setting at a time and repeat the same scene. Sustained low FPS usually points to a CPU or GPU limit; brief pauses can come from shader compilation or asset streaming; blurry textures and pop-in can occur when a game runs short of graphics memory. No single fix works for every open-world title, so use the game’s current requirements and support instructions as the final authority.

Identify the symptom before changing settings

Watch what happens for several minutes instead of judging performance from one number. Note the game version, platform, resolution, graphics preset, driver version, and the exact location or activity that triggers the problem. A repeatable observation is more useful than a general impression that the game feels slow.

Sustained low FPS

If the frame rate remains low in most areas, the system is likely limited by one of its main resources. A CPU can be the limiting component even when the graphics card appears powerful. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance describes CPU-limited game performance as common and also notes that high resolution and pixel-shader work can make the GPU the bottleneck.

Intermittent stutter or hitching

If the game runs smoothly and then pauses for a fraction of a second while you enter a new area, see a new effect, or load after an update, you are dealing with a frame-time spike rather than a permanently low average. Shader compilation is one documented cause. Some games compile shaders on first launch or as new effects appear, and the process can temporarily interrupt rendering.

Texture pop-in or blurry surfaces

If objects are present but their textures arrive late, remain blurry, or switch quality while you move through the world, distinguish this from low FPS. Insufficient graphics memory is one possible cause in some titles. BeamNG.drive support specifically warns that low-memory graphics cards can produce blurry textures, delayed texture loading, and visual pop-in. That statement is title-specific evidence, not proof that VRAM explains every game’s streaming problem.

Record when the problem began

  • First launch after installing the game.
  • Immediately after a game patch or graphics-driver update.
  • Only while traversing quickly through the world.
  • Only in crowded cities, combat, or effects-heavy scenes.
  • After changing resolution, texture quality, or another graphics option.

These timing clues determine which checks to try first and help you undo a change that does not help.

Map the symptom to a likely resource

Observed behavior Likely area to check First reversible test What the result means
Low FPS almost everywhere CPU or GPU load Measure CPU and GPU use, then lower settings that stress the busy component An improvement after a targeted reduction supports that bottleneck; it does not prove that component is the only cause
Drops in busy scenes CPU simulation, draw calls, or GPU pixel-shader work Repeat the same crowded scene at a lower resolution or with CPU-heavy options reduced Compare frame rate and frame-time behavior in the identical location
Brief hitches during traversal or new effects Shader compilation or asset streaming Allow the game’s shader preparation to finish and test again after a complete restart Fewer hitches after preparation suggest compilation was involved
Textures appear late or stay blurry VRAM pressure, storage streaming, or a game-specific bug Lower texture quality one step and repeat the same route Improvement points toward graphics-memory pressure, but does not rule out streaming or software defects

This table is a practical troubleshooting framework, not a validated diagnostic test. A definitive diagnosis requires the game and version, platform, CPU, GPU and VRAM, system RAM, storage device and free space, resolution, settings, driver version, and the exact trigger.

Check the game’s requirements and measure the bottleneck

Use the current requirements for that title

Open the publisher’s current requirements page or support article and compare the minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, graphics-memory capacity, RAM, and storage requirements with your system. Requirements differ by game and can change between editions or major updates. Do not turn one title’s specification into a universal threshold for all open-world games.

Observe CPU and GPU load in the affected scene

Use your operating system or graphics-driver performance overlay to observe utilization while reproducing the problem. Check several minutes of the same route rather than relying on a menu or an empty area. Microsoft notes that a capable GPU does not prevent a CPU limitation; conversely, high resolution and pixel-shader demand can make the GPU the constraint.

Change the setting that matches the measured limit

  • CPU-limited behavior: Test options that reduce simulation or scene complexity, such as crowd, traffic, distance, or object-detail settings when the game exposes them. Use the game’s descriptions because labels and effects vary by title.
  • GPU pixel-shader limitation: Lower resolution or resolution scale first. High-resolution rendering increases pixel-shader work, so this test directly targets the load Microsoft describes.
  • VRAM pressure: Lower texture quality one step and watch whether late textures or pop-in improve. Avoid changing several unrelated options at once.

After each change, restart the same route or encounter and compare the result. If lowering a setting does nothing, restore it before testing the next one so you know which change produced the outcome.

Reduce shader-compilation stutter

Let the game finish its own preparation

When hitches begin on first play, after an update, or as new visual effects appear, look for an in-game message or menu option that prepares shaders. Allow the process to complete while the game is idle. Some titles build a cache after installation or on the first run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Square Enix documents a shader-cache and in-game compilation procedure for a supported game, including a title-specific menu path and an estimated duration. Do not copy that path or timing to another game. Follow the instructions published for your exact title and version; a different game may compile automatically, use another menu, or provide no manual control.

Understand Windows 11 Advanced Shader Delivery

Microsoft describes Advanced Shader Delivery as a Windows 11 technology that can precompile and deliver shaders before play. Its documentation explains that compiling shaders on the player’s device at launch or “just-in-time” during gameplay can cause longer load times, in-game shader-compilation stutter, and higher power consumption.

Advanced Shader Delivery is conditional, not a switch every player can use. It requires a supported Windows version, compatible GPU and driver capabilities, and integration by the game and storefront. If any of those pieces is missing, there may be no setting to enable on your system.

Allow background compilation to finish

AMD’s documentation also describes background shader compilation and notes that affected titles may perform worse until compilation completes. If the game reports that shaders are compiling, avoid judging final performance during that phase. Let it finish, then exit and relaunch the game to test whether the same scene still hitches.

When shader work is not the explanation

A hitch that persists in exactly the same location after shader preparation, or that began with a storage, driver, or game change, needs a broader investigation. Do not repeatedly delete caches or remove drivers without a title-specific reason; the official guidance above does not establish those actions as universal fixes.

Address texture pop-in and graphics-memory pressure

Run a controlled texture-quality test

  1. Stand in the area where textures arrive late or remain blurry.
  2. Lower texture quality by one preset step, leaving resolution and other options unchanged.
  3. Travel through the same route at the same speed and observe the same objects.
  4. Restore the original setting if there is no improvement, then test the next suspected cause.

If pop-in improves after the texture reduction, compare the game’s published graphics-memory requirement with the VRAM available on your GPU. Also check whether other applications are using graphics memory. The result indicates memory pressure may be involved; it does not establish that VRAM is the cause in every title.

Do not confuse storage streaming with a universal SSD cure

Open-world games stream assets while you move, so storage can be relevant, but the evidence is game-specific. One PlayStation-published PC title lists a 190 GB SSD requirement. That is a specification for that example title, with no general publication date shown in the cited support result; it is not evidence that installing every game on an SSD fixes shader compilation or texture pop-in.

Before buying storage, verify the game’s own requirement and your device’s interface, form factor, capacity, free space, operating-system support, and installation constraints. A storage upgrade should follow a demonstrated requirement or limitation, not a blanket assumption.

Keep other causes in view

Game bugs, asset-streaming behavior, patches, and storage conditions can also produce delayed textures. If lowering textures has no effect and the issue appeared after an update, check the publisher’s known issues and current support steps for that version instead of assuming the graphics card is defective.

Apply low-risk official maintenance checks

These checks are sensible because official PC support guidance commonly includes them, but none is guaranteed to solve a particular game.

  1. Update Windows: Install current operating-system updates, then restart before testing.
  2. Update the graphics driver: Use the GPU manufacturer’s official driver channel and record the version so you can correlate the change with the symptom.
  3. Update the game: Confirm that the launcher has installed the latest patch for your platform and edition.
  4. Verify game files: Use the launcher’s file-verification command when the publisher recommends it. Santa Monica Studio’s PC support guidance, for example, documents update and file-verification steps for its title.
  5. Retest one scene: Reproduce the original route or encounter after each maintenance action. If nothing changes, keep the result and move to the next branch rather than repeating the same operation.

Do not treat blanket registry edits, indiscriminate driver removal, cache deletion, or third-party optimizer utilities as standard remedies. The official guidance available for this issue does not establish them as universal fixes, and they can introduce new variables.

Choose graphics settings without losing track of the cause

Setting or action Use it when Trade-off How to test
Resolution or resolution scale GPU load is high or the game is limited by pixel-shader work Lower image sharpness Reduce one step, keep textures unchanged, and repeat the same scene
Texture quality Pop-in or blurry textures suggest VRAM pressure Lower surface detail and potentially more visible texture transitions Drop one step and traverse the identical route
CPU-heavy scene-detail options CPU utilization is the limiting measurement and drops occur in crowds or dense areas Less distant detail, traffic, or simulation complexity Change one CPU-related option and compare the same busy location
Shader preparation Hitches occur on first launch, after updates, or when new effects appear Initial waiting time or extra preparation before play Complete the game’s supported process, relaunch, and repeat the trigger

Keep a short change log: setting, old value, new value, scene, and result. This prevents you from mistaking a different route or a one-time compilation event for a successful fix.

Decide whether hardware is actually justified

Consider a graphics-card upgrade only after confirming a GPU or VRAM limit

A card with more VRAM is relevant when the specific game requires more graphics memory than your current card provides or when the controlled texture test consistently reduces pop-in. Check the game’s requirements, your card’s available VRAM, power supply, case clearance, display connector, and platform compatibility before purchasing. No source establishes a universal VRAM amount for all open-world games.

Consider a CPU upgrade only after observing CPU limitation

If the CPU remains the busy component in the affected scene while lowering resolution barely changes FPS, a faster processor may address that title’s limit. Confirm socket or platform compatibility, cooling, firmware support, and the game’s recommended CPU before spending money. A CPU purchase will not automatically resolve shader-compilation hitches or texture streaming.

Consider storage only when requirements or testing support it

Use the named game’s storage requirement and your measured behavior. Confirm interface, form factor, capacity, free space, and whether the platform permits the planned installation. The 190 GB SSD figure published for one PlayStation PC title illustrates why storage advice must remain title-specific.

Do not buy hardware to solve an unisolated symptom

If the issue began after a patch, appears only while shaders compile, or does not respond to a targeted setting change, seek the game publisher’s current support information first. The available evidence does not prove that a GPU, CPU, or SSD purchase will resolve a particular reader’s problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Console players: use platform-specific support

The technical evidence summarized here is primarily PC-specific. On a console, install the game’s current update, verify available system storage, restart the title and console, and follow the game publisher’s and platform holder’s current troubleshooting instructions. Console graphics settings, shader systems, storage expansion rules, and repair options differ by platform, so do not apply PC driver or Windows procedures to a console.

A repeatable troubleshooting sequence

  1. Classify the symptom as sustained low FPS, scene-specific drops, intermittent hitches, or texture pop-in.
  2. Record the game version, platform, hardware, VRAM, RAM, storage, resolution, settings, driver version, and trigger.
  3. Compare the system with the game’s current minimum and recommended requirements.
  4. Observe CPU and GPU load in the exact scene where the problem occurs.
  5. Apply one targeted, reversible setting change that matches the measured limit.
  6. If hitches align with first launch, an update, or new effects, complete the game’s supported shader-preparation process.
  7. If textures arrive late, lower texture quality one step and repeat the same route while checking VRAM pressure.
  8. Install official Windows, driver, and game updates, then verify files when the publisher supports that step.
  9. Retest after every change and keep only changes that improve the original symptom without creating a new one.
  10. Buy hardware only when the title-specific requirements and your measurements identify a compatible CPU, GPU, VRAM, or storage limitation.

This process cannot guarantee a fix: open-world engines differ, and a game-specific bug may require a patch from its publisher. It does ensure that each change is tied to an observed symptom rather than guesswork.
