To fix low FPS or stuttering on an RTX 5070 gaming laptop, first reproduce the problem under consistent conditions, then check power, GPU routing, drivers, and—only for supported games—Windows’ windowed-game optimization. Change one setting at a time and compare results; the GPU name alone cannot predict performance, and stuttering does not by itself prove a hardware fault.
First, determine whether FPS is low or frame delivery is uneven
Low average FPS and stuttering are related but different problems. A low average means the game is rendering fewer frames overall. Stutter means frame delivery is inconsistent; a game can show a reasonable average while still feeling jerky.
Reproduce the issue in the same game scene and note the resolution, graphics settings, display mode, whether the laptop is plugged into its recommended adapter, and when the symptom begins. Record those conditions before making changes so you can make a meaningful comparison.

Check power and the laptop’s performance profile
Connect the adapter recommended for your exact laptop and select the manufacturer’s performance or gaming profile if you want maximum performance and accept more fan noise and power use. NVIDIA documents Performance, Balanced, and Quiet power modes for supported notebooks; Performance mode requires an adapter capable of providing its required output. Not every notebook exposes NVIDIA’s controls, and manufacturers may use different profile names. See NVIDIA’s Power Mode Reference and instructions for supported notebooks.
Do not substitute an arbitrary charger: the compatible adapter and required output depend on the laptop model. If the game runs poorly only on battery, compare it while plugged in using the same scene and settings.

Make sure the game is using the NVIDIA GPU
On a Windows 11 laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics, set the game’s graphics preference to High performance:
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game. If it is not listed, add its executable using the available browse option.
- Select Options, choose High performance, and save.
- Close and restart the game before testing again.
Microsoft explains that this preference is relevant when a PC has more than one graphics processor: Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11. NVIDIA’s Optimus documentation describes how hybrid systems may select integrated or NVIDIA graphics, with behavior affected by the notebook’s configuration and power plan: Using NVIDIA’s Power-Saving GPU Technology.

If your laptop has a MUX switch or Advanced Optimus
Some notebooks let you choose between hybrid graphics and a discrete-GPU display path through a MUX or Advanced Optimus setting. If your manufacturer provides that option, compare the supported automatic or hybrid mode with discrete mode while plugged in, following the laptop’s instructions. Discrete mode can improve performance and may enable G-SYNC on supported systems; hybrid mode can reduce power use. The setting, menu name, and available display features vary by notebook. NVIDIA describes the display multiplexer in its Display Multiplexer help and outlines Advanced Optimus in its NVIDIA App and Advanced Optimus overview.
Check the exact laptop’s driver guidance
Look up the full laptop model on its manufacturer’s support page and check for certified graphics and platform updates. NVIDIA’s driver listing supports RTX 5070 Laptop GPUs but also advises notebook owners to check with their laptop manufacturer for recommended software updates: NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver listing.

Before changing drivers, review current release notes for a fix that matches your game or symptom. Driver versions and fixes change over time, so verify the current listing rather than relying on a version number from an older guide. Prefer the laptop manufacturer’s certified driver when it recommends one for your exact machine.

Test windowed-game optimization only in its supported case
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games setting targets DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. Microsoft says the optimization can transition compatible games to the flip presentation model, potentially reducing frame latency and enabling features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. It is not a general FPS switch for every game or display mode.

If your game meets those conditions, use the per-app setting described in Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions, restart the game, and compare the same scene with the option on and off. Keep the change only if the comparison improves your experience.
Compare changes one at a time
After each change, repeat the same scene with the same resolution, settings, display mode, and power state. Compare average and percentile FPS and, if available, frame pacing. Note which setting changed; otherwise, an improvement or regression may be hard to explain.
If the issue remains, gather the exact laptop make and model, game, Windows version, driver version, GPU and CPU usage and clocks, temperature, power, and whether the symptom starts immediately or appears after sustained play. That information can help distinguish a software or configuration issue from a possible hardware problem. Do not infer overheating from stutter alone.

What the RTX 5070 specification does—and does not—tell you
NVIDIA lists the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with 4,608 CUDA cores, a 1,425–2,347 MHz boost-clock range, 8 GB of GDDR7 memory, and 384 GB/s memory bandwidth on its GeForce RTX 50 Series laptop page. These are GPU-family specifications, not a promise of a particular laptop’s sustained performance or FPS. Laptop power limits, cooling, CPU, display, and game workload all affect the result, so those specifications alone cannot identify the cause of low FPS or stuttering.
