Fix low FPS and stuttering in this order: determine whether the problem affects one game or the whole laptop, restart and close unnecessary workloads, inspect CPU, memory, disk and GPU activity in Task Manager, install pending Windows and optional driver updates, assign the game to the correct GPU on Windows 11, test a performance power mode while plugged in, and then compare the result with the laptop’s hardware limits. These steps can remove software and configuration bottlenecks, but they cannot make older hardware deliver performance it was never designed to provide.
Use the narrowest diagnosis that fits your symptom. A game that stutters while Windows remains responsive needs a different investigation from a laptop that is slow everywhere. A flickering or scrambled display also needs a separate driver-versus-application check; the flicker test is not a universal stutter test.
First, establish what is actually slow
Low frames per second (FPS) means the game is rendering fewer frames than you expect. Stuttering is uneven delivery: the average FPS may look acceptable, but individual frames arrive with noticeable pauses or hitches. General Windows slowness can come from background activity, low free storage, outdated software, malware, or hardware limits. Do not assume that changing a graphics setting will fix a problem that occurs outside the game.

Write down when the problem began and whether it followed a Windows update, a graphics-driver update, a newly installed app, or a settings change. That timeline is evidence, not proof of a cause; confirm it by testing one change at a time.

Reset the laptop and create a clean baseline
Before changing advanced settings, save your work and restart the laptop. A restart clears transient processes and completes updates that are waiting for a reboot. Launch only the affected game after Windows finishes loading, then check whether the symptom remains. If performance is normal after a restart but degrades later, background activity or a program that starts during the session deserves attention.
- Restart Windows rather than merely closing the lid or using sleep.
- After signing in, wait for obvious startup activity to settle.
- Close browser windows, launchers, chat clients, recording tools, overlays, and editors you do not need for the test.
- Run the game in the same scene or mode where you noticed the problem, so each test is comparable.
- Change only one setting between tests and note whether the hitching or FPS changes.
This baseline prevents a background task from being mistaken for a graphics limitation and gives you a meaningful before-and-after comparison.
Use Task Manager to find a resource bottleneck
Microsoft’s performance guidance recommends monitoring resource use and closing applications that are not in use. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. The Processes tab shows which programs are consuming resources; the Performance tab shows overall CPU, memory, disk, and GPU activity.
Check Processes while the problem is happening
- Open Processes and sort by CPU. Look for a process using substantial CPU while the game is hitching.
- Sort by Memory and identify browsers, launchers, or other applications consuming an unusually large share.
- Sort by Disk. A sustained disk-heavy task can coincide with pauses, especially when Windows is updating, indexing, synchronizing, or scanning.
- Close only applications you recognize and do not need. Select the app, choose End task, and do not terminate Windows processes merely because their names look unfamiliar.
- Switch to Performance and watch CPU, memory, disk, and GPU graphs during a repeatable section of the game.
A high utilization percentage is a clue, not a diagnosis. A game can be limited by one busy CPU thread even when the overall CPU percentage is not near 100 percent, and a GPU can be fully occupied because the game is rendering normally rather than malfunctioning. Look for a change that coincides with each hitch: a background process waking up, memory pressure, disk activity, or a GPU that is not the one you expected.

Review startup activity
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and review programs that launch automatically. Disable startup entries you do not need by selecting the entry and choosing Disable. Do not disable security software or a component you cannot identify. Restart after making changes and repeat the same game test. Startup cleanup helps when unwanted programs consume resources after every sign-in; it does not increase the capability of the laptop’s processor or graphics hardware.
Install Windows and optional driver updates
Open Windows Update and check for updates. Microsoft notes that optional updates can include non-critical drivers that may help with device behavior. Install updates that are appropriate for your laptop, restart when requested, and test again before making another change.
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and allow required updates to install.
- Open the Optional updates area if it is offered, then review optional driver updates. Install a driver only when its device description matches your laptop.
- Restart Windows, even if the update did not explicitly demand it.
- Repeat the same in-game test and compare the result with your baseline.
Keep the timeline in mind. If stuttering started immediately after a driver or application change, that relationship is worth investigating. It is not evidence that every new driver is bad, nor that every hitch is caused by a driver.

Check free storage and unexpected activity
Microsoft identifies low disk space as a possible performance factor. Check the system drive in Windows Storage settings and remove temporary files or other unneeded data with Windows’ built-in cleanup tools. Keep enough free space for Windows, updates, the game, and normal temporary files; the available guidance does not establish a universal percentage or gigabyte threshold, so do not treat one as a guaranteed FPS target.

If Task Manager shows unexpected CPU, memory, or disk consumption, run a malware scan with Windows Security. A scan is especially appropriate when a process you do not recognize repeatedly consumes resources, pop-ups appear, or browser behavior changes. Complete the scan, restart if Windows requests it, and then repeat the controlled game test.
Assign the game to the intended GPU in Windows 11
A Windows 11 laptop with integrated and discrete graphics can expose per-app choices. If a game is assigned to a power-saving GPU when it needs the high-performance processor, changing the app preference is a useful test. It is not guaranteed to improve every system: some laptops route displays and applications through their graphics hardware in ways that make the setting irrelevant.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the game in the app list. If it is not listed, use the option to browse for and add the game’s executable.
- Select the game and choose Options.
- Compare the available choices: Let Windows decide, Power saving, and High performance.
- Select High performance when the game needs the discrete or faster GPU, then choose Save.
- Close and restart the game before judging the result.

Windows 11 also provides Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless modes. Microsoft says the feature can reduce frame latency and enable supported features, but compatibility and the actual effect depend on the game and system. If the option is available on your laptop, enable it as a separate test, restart the game, and keep it only if the repeatable result is better.

Windows offers Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance power modes. The performance-oriented mode can let the processor operate at higher performance when needed, but Microsoft warns that selecting Best performance increases power consumption. It can drain the battery faster and make the laptop warmer.

- Connect the laptop to its normal charger.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery on Windows 11.
- Find Power mode and select Best performance.
- Run the same game scene used for your baseline.
- Return to Balanced or Best power efficiency when maximum performance is no longer needed, especially before unplugging the laptop.

Power mode is a controlled experiment, not a guaranteed FPS cure. If Best performance changes nothing, switch back to the mode that fits your battery and heat needs.
Handle driver and display symptoms carefully
When the symptom is flickering, flashing, or a scrambled display, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance suggests comparing the behavior of Task Manager with the rest of the screen. Open Task Manager and observe both at the same time:
- If Task Manager flickers too, a display driver is more likely. Depending on the situation, update the display driver, roll it back to the previous version, or uninstall the problematic driver so Windows can redetect it.
- If Task Manager remains stable while the rest of the screen flickers, an incompatible application is more likely. Update, disable, or uninstall the app that coincided with the symptom.
This comparison is specifically for flickering symptoms. It should not be presented as a universal way to diagnose ordinary game stutter or low FPS. For a game-only hitch, continue with the resource, GPU-assignment, power-mode, and hardware checks instead.
Compare the result with the laptop’s hardware limits
After software checks, ask whether the laptop’s hardware can meet the game’s requirements at the desired settings. Compare the game’s published requirements with the laptop model’s processor, graphics processor, memory, and storage configuration. A setting change can correct a wrong GPU assignment or an avoidable background load, but it cannot turn an older processor or graphics chip into a newer one.

Microsoft states that "Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps." If the game remains slow after updates, cleanup, correct GPU selection, and a power-mode test, the evidence may indicate a hardware ceiling rather than a Windows configuration error.
Do not buy a charger, cooling accessory, memory kit, solid-state drive, or repair service solely from the symptom description. Compatibility and need depend on the exact laptop model, installed components, firmware, and the measured bottleneck. Identify the model and collect Task Manager observations first; then consult the laptop manufacturer’s support documentation for model-specific upgrade or repair information.
Windows version and support considerations
The per-app graphics preference and windowed-game optimization instructions above apply to Windows 11. Microsoft’s general performance and power-mode guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Do not interpret that older page coverage as a promise of ongoing free Windows 10 security updates. If the laptop still runs Windows 10, verify its support and upgrade options before treating an update-related problem as a normal current configuration.

- One game only: repeat the test after closing background apps, check its Windows 11 GPU preference if applicable, and investigate any game or driver change that preceded the problem.
- Several games: check GPU assignment, Windows updates, optional drivers, power mode while plugged in, and whether the same GPU and resource pattern appears in Task Manager.
- All Windows activity is slow: prioritize CPU, memory, disk, startup, storage, and malware checks before changing graphics settings.
- Flicker or corruption is present: use the Task Manager flicker comparison, then update, roll back, or remove the implicated driver or application as appropriate.
- No software change helps: compare the laptop’s hardware with the game’s requirements and treat a persistent shortfall as a likely hardware limitation requiring model-specific advice.
Common mistakes that hide the cause
- Changing several settings at once, which makes it impossible to know which change mattered.
- Judging performance immediately after an update or restart while background tasks are still active.
- Ending unfamiliar Windows processes in Task Manager without knowing what they do.
- Running Best performance on battery and then mistaking faster battery drain or extra warmth for a new fault.
- Assuming that High performance in the Graphics settings always selects a discrete GPU or always raises FPS.
- Using the flicker diagnostic as proof of the cause of ordinary stuttering.
- Buying hardware before measuring the bottleneck and confirming compatibility with the exact laptop model.
What a successful fix should look like
A valid improvement is repeatable: the same game scene produces fewer pauses or a consistently higher frame rate after one documented change, while the laptop remains stable. Keep the setting that solves the measured problem and revert changes that only increase heat, power use, or inconvenience without improving the game. If every software test produces the same result and the hardware is below the game’s needs, the honest conclusion is that Windows troubleshooting has reached its limit.
