Low frame rates and stuttering usually come from one of four conditions: the laptop is limiting performance to save power, the game is assigned to the wrong GPU, other software is consuming CPU, memory or disk time, or a display/driver change has disrupted frame delivery. Work through the checks below in order, using the same game scene and settings after each change. This separates a repeatable performance limit from intermittent frame-pacing problems without promising an FPS gain that your hardware cannot provide.

First, separate low FPS from stuttering

Low FPS means the game consistently renders fewer frames than you want. The image may look smooth but slow, or it may remain slow in every scene. Stuttering is uneven frame delivery: the FPS counter can look acceptable while the picture pauses, hitches or varies sharply. A laptop can have both problems at once.

Windows support guidance can identify power, GPU-selection, background-resource, driver and display issues. It does not provide a universal FPS test, a temperature cutoff, or evidence that a particular cooling accessory or utility will cure stutter. Treat every change as a test rather than assuming one setting is the cause.

Build a repeatable baseline before changing settings

Without a consistent comparison, a busy game scene can make a fix appear to work when the workload simply changed. Record the conditions that matter:

  • Use the same game, save point or benchmark scene, resolution and graphics settings.
  • Note whether the laptop is on battery or connected to its normal power adapter.
  • Write down when the problem began and whether it followed a Windows, graphics-driver or game-settings change.
  • Observe whether the problem is constant (low FPS), periodic (stutter), or appears only after the laptop has been running for a while.

Change one item at a time, play the same section again, and keep the change only if the result is repeatable. This is a practical method for isolating causes; Microsoft does not prescribe a single universal game test protocol.

1. Put the laptop on the right power mode

Power state is the quickest check because many laptops reduce performance on battery or in an efficiency-oriented mode. Microsoft says Windows power modes trade efficiency, balanced operation and performance. In Windows 11, the performance-oriented choice is named Best performance.

Windows 11

  1. Connect the laptop to its usual power adapter.
  2. Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
  3. Under the power-mode control, select Best performance.
  4. Launch the game again and repeat your baseline scene.

Microsoft’s warning is explicit: “Selecting Best performance increases power consumption. On laptops, this setting will drain the battery more quickly and may cause the device to run warmer.” Use it when maximum performance is needed and mains power is available; switch back when you need battery life or lower heat.

Why the option may be missing

Not every PC exposes identical choices. A manufacturer’s custom power plan, firmware configuration or Windows edition can change what appears. If the setting is unavailable, note the active plan and check the laptop maker’s documentation for its power controls rather than assuming Windows is malfunctioning.

Windows 10 qualification

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s power-mode guidance. Existing Windows 10 controls may still show efficiency, balanced and performance choices, but present-day troubleshooting should prioritize a supported operating system and the exact options visible on your machine.

Power choice Use it when Trade-off
Efficiency-oriented mode Battery life and lower heat matter more than peak game performance. May reduce available performance.
Balanced You want a general-purpose compromise. May not hold the highest performance level during demanding scenes.
Best performance The laptop is plugged in and you are testing or playing a demanding game. Higher power use, faster battery drain when unplugged, and potentially more heat.

2. Make sure the game uses the intended GPU

Many laptops have more than one graphics processor: an integrated GPU for efficiency and a discrete GPU for demanding 3D work. Windows 11 lets you set a per-app graphics preference. This is a routing check, not a guarantee that the discrete GPU will solve every hitch.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Find the game in the app list. If it is not listed, use the option to browse for and add its executable.
  3. Select the game, open Options, and inspect the graphics preference.
  4. Choose High performance when that is appropriate for the game and laptop, then save.
  5. Restart the game and repeat the same test scene.

If the game was already assigned to the high-performance GPU and results do not change, leave the setting as documented and investigate resources, drivers and display configuration instead. GPU-control-panel labels and firmware behavior vary by manufacturer, so do not assume a setting from another laptop exists on yours.

Windowed and borderless games

Windows 11 also includes Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. In the same Settings > System > Display > Graphics area, change the option if you are testing a supported title, then restart the game. It does not apply universally to every API, exclusive-full-screen mode or game.

3. Find competing CPU, memory and disk activity

A game can stutter when another process repeatedly consumes a resource, even if the GPU is capable of the target frame rate. Windows Task Manager shows which applications are active and how heavily the system is being used.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, inspect the CPU, Memory and Disk columns while the game is running or immediately after a hitch.
  3. Use Performance to see whether CPU, memory or disk activity is persistently high.
  4. Close applications you recognize and do not need, then repeat the same game scene.

Examples include a browser with many tabs, an archive or file-copy operation, a software installer, or a synchronization job. Close only software you understand; do not indiscriminately disable security tools, drivers or essential Windows services. If the system remains busy after you close unnecessary programs, restart Windows and open only the game and required applications, as Microsoft suggests.

Background activity controls

Windows provides background-activity controls for supported apps, but availability depends on the app and Windows version. Use those controls only for applications you have identified as unnecessary during play. A background-process change is useful evidence only if repeating the baseline test shows the hitch has actually changed.

4. Treat a driver change as a timeline clue, not proof

If the stutter started immediately after a Windows or graphics-driver update, the timing makes a rollback worth considering. If nothing changed before the symptoms, updating or reinstalling the display driver may still be a troubleshooting step, but the Microsoft page cited for these actions addresses flickering or scrambled display symptoms, not a measured cause of game stutter. That makes the connection an inference, not proof.

Use the exact laptop or adapter support path

Start with the laptop manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and operating system. A graphics-chip maker’s generic package may not include the laptop’s display switching, power or firmware customizations. Record the current driver version before changing it so you can reverse the test.

If the problem followed a recent update

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
  2. Open the affected adapter’s Properties and inspect the Driver tab.
  3. If Roll Back Driver is available and the timing matches the update, use it and restart Windows.
  4. Repeat the baseline scene. If the hitch remains, the rollback did not establish the driver as the cause.

If no recent update explains it

Install the correct driver supplied for the exact system, or uninstall and reinstall it only when the maker’s instructions call for that procedure. Restart after the change. Avoid installing several driver packages at once; you need a clean comparison to know whether the change mattered.

5. Check refresh rate and variable refresh rate (VRR)

Refresh rate is how often the display can update, measured in hertz. Rendered FPS is how quickly the game produces frames. A higher refresh-rate setting does not by itself make the game render more frames, and a display cannot show every frame the GPU fails to produce.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Confirm that the intended display is selected.
  3. Read the current refresh rate and the rates Windows offers.
  4. Check whether Windows reports support for variable refresh rate (VRR).

Available rates depend on the display, connection and device capabilities. Some games can use VRR dynamically when both the display and software support it. If Windows does not report VRR, do not promise that enabling a game-side option will create it. If you change the refresh-rate or VRR setting, restart the game when requested and repeat the same test.

6. Investigate heat without guessing a temperature limit

Best performance can make a laptop run warmer, but warmth alone does not establish thermal throttling. The reviewed Microsoft guidance gives no universal temperature threshold and does not validate a particular cooling pad, stand or monitoring utility as a cure for stutter. Laptop designs, sensors and firmware limits differ.

Use the laptop maker’s diagnostics and airflow instructions for the exact model. Check that vents are unobstructed and that the machine is used on a hard, stable surface if the manufacturer requires it. If the maker’s diagnostics identify a thermal or fan fault, follow its service guidance. Do not buy an accessory solely because the chassis feels warm; first establish that heat correlates with the hitch in repeatable testing.

If you do evaluate a ventilated stand or cooling pad after identifying heat as a contributor, treat it as a model-specific experiment. The available guidance does not establish that an accessory will fix the issue or work with every laptop.

7. Use the symptom to choose the next branch

Observed pattern Next check Reason
Low FPS only on battery Connect power and compare power modes. Battery policy or an efficiency mode may be limiting performance.
Low FPS in every scene, unchanged after power and GPU checks Inspect resource use, then consult the game and laptop maker’s requirements. The remaining limit may be the workload or hardware capability, which these Windows settings cannot remove.
Brief hitches coincide with CPU, memory or disk spikes Identify and close the unnecessary process; retest. Competing resource use can interrupt frame delivery.
Problem began immediately after a driver update Use the exact-model driver path and consider a documented rollback. The timeline supports a controlled driver test, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
Stutter changes with display mode or appears only on an external screen Check Advanced display, refresh rate and VRR for the selected display. Display capabilities and configuration differ by screen.
Symptoms worsen as the laptop gets warmer Use manufacturer diagnostics and airflow guidance. No universal thermal threshold is established.

8. What these fixes cannot guarantee

  • Best performance cannot create GPU or CPU capacity that the game requires; it changes Windows’ power preference and may increase heat.
  • High performance in Windows Graphics settings is a per-app preference, not proof that the game will use a discrete GPU in every mode.
  • Closing background apps helps only when those apps were consuming a resource relevant to the hitch.
  • A driver rollback is justified by timing, but it does not prove the driver caused the stutter.
  • A high refresh rate and VRR can affect display behavior, yet neither guarantees a particular rendered FPS.
  • No universal temperature cutoff, cooling-pad result, benchmark gain or percentage improvement is established by the cited Windows guidance.

Recommended order of operations

  1. Reproduce the issue in the same scene and record battery/adapter state.
  2. Connect the normal power adapter and test Best performance in Settings > System > Power & battery (Windows 11).
  3. Set the game to High performance in Settings > System > Display > Graphics when the laptop has multiple GPUs; restart the game.
  4. Use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to find unnecessary CPU, memory or disk activity.
  5. Check whether the timeline points to a driver update; use the exact-model support path and a controlled rollback or reinstall.
  6. Verify refresh rate and VRR under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  7. If heat remains a strong, repeatable correlation, use model-specific diagnostics and airflow instructions before buying hardware.

Stop when a change produces a repeatable improvement and keep a note of the setting that worked. If none of these checks changes the result, the evidence points away from a simple Windows configuration mismatch; consult the game’s documented requirements and the laptop maker for model-specific limits or faults.
