The right fix depends on what is loose. A moving ball joint or peg needs a reversible fit correction that preserves articulation; a stationary armor panel can be permanently bonded only when the materials and intended assembly are suitable; a cracked, snapped, missing, or defective component may be a replacement-policy issue rather than a glue job. Do not treat solvent cement as a general-purpose coating for loose articulated joints. Bandai’s published cement instructions describe seam bonding, not joint tightening.
Start by identifying the kit, the exact connection, whether it must move, and whether the plastic is damaged. Then choose the least irreversible path that solves that specific problem.
Choose the repair path before touching the part
| What you see | Does the connection need to move? | Most appropriate first path | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| A peg, hinge, or ball moves but will not hold a pose | Yes | Inspect the fit and use a cautious, reversible friction correction only after confirming the kit and materials | Solvent cement on the moving surface; any change that prevents disassembly |
| An armor piece or other connection repeatedly falls off but is meant to stay fixed | No | Recheck orientation and the manual; consider a permanent plastic bond only when the materials and final assembly are suitable | Bonding a joint, weapon socket, or part that must be removed for transport |
| A component is cracked, snapped, missing, or clearly defective | Not the deciding issue | Photograph it, identify the kit and part, and check the current manufacturer or retailer replacement route | Forcing a damaged connection or assuming every country follows the same replacement policy |
| A connection is merely a little loose on an otherwise usable kit | Maybe | Treat it as a fit problem, not automatically as a warranty defect | Expecting replacement eligibility where the policy excludes minor looseness |
There is no official, universal Bandai recipe for tightening every loose Gunpla joint. The manufacturer’s documented method concerns bonding mating edges to remove seams. That distinction matters because a solvent that permanently joins plastic can also lock articulation, prevent maintenance, or damage a part that was supposed to remain adjustable.

1. Identify the exact connection
Do not diagnose an entire arm or leg as “loose.” Name the connection: shoulder ball, elbow hinge, wrist peg, hip socket, ankle ball, armor tab, backpack mount, or weapon handle. A model can have one weak interface and several perfectly fitted ones. The repair should affect only the faulty interface.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check the instructions and orientation
Remove the part without twisting harder than necessary and compare its orientation with the kit manual. Many apparent retention problems are an incorrectly oriented tab, a peg that has not been fully seated, or two halves that were swapped. Check that no seam, nub, flash, paint, topcoat, or trapped debris is preventing the intended surfaces from meeting. If the part is under stress when correctly assembled, stop and reassess rather than forcing it.
3. Decide whether movement is required
Ask what the connection is supposed to do after assembly. A shoulder or hip must articulate; a removable shield mount may need to come off; an armor plate may be intended to remain fixed. The answer determines whether a permanent bond is acceptable. If you cannot disassemble the part later without damaging it, treat the intervention as permanent.
4. Separate looseness from damage
A loose but intact peg is a different problem from a hairline crack, a snapped pin, a missing piece, or plastic that arrived malformed. Photograph the part before modifying it. Keep the kit box, manual, receipt, warning sticker, and UPC if a replacement request may be appropriate.

How to approach a loose moving joint
For an articulated joint, the objective is increased holding friction without eliminating the designed range of motion. The official sources available for this topic do not validate one product, thickness, coating, or home recipe as a universal joint-tightening method. Therefore, work conservatively and regard any friction adjustment as a model-specific fit correction, not as a manufacturer-approved standard procedure.

A cautious inspection sequence
- Disassemble only as far as needed. Separate the loose interface so you can see the peg, socket, hinge pin, or ball. Do not pry against thin armor or twist a cracked part.
- Inspect both mating surfaces. Look for incomplete seating, molding residue, a misaligned hinge, paint or finish buildup, stress whitening, and cracks. A visible crack is a damage case, not an invitation to increase friction.
- Reassemble dry and test the intended movement. Use the manual’s orientation, seat the part fully, and move it through its normal range with gentle pressure. Note whether the looseness occurs in one direction or throughout the rotation.
- Make one reversible change at a time. If you choose a friction aid, use the smallest practical amount, keep it away from hidden hinges and adjacent surfaces, and allow it to settle before testing. Confirm material compatibility on an inconspicuous area or a spare part before committing the visible piece.
- Stop when the joint holds without binding. A joint that is difficult to move can transfer stress to the peg, socket, or surrounding armor. Do not keep adding material simply because the first adjustment was insufficient.
- Retest the full assembly. Verify that the joint still reaches the poses you need, that armor does not collide, and that the part can be removed for transport or maintenance if that was part of the design.
These steps describe a risk-controlled decision process, not a guaranteed formula. Plastic type, geometry, paint, and topcoat can change the result. If you do not know what plastic or finish is present, avoid a chemical treatment and seek kit-specific guidance before proceeding.
Why solvent cement is the wrong default for articulation
Solvent cement is intended to soften compatible plastic surfaces so they fuse as the solvent evaporates. That is useful for a permanent seam, but a moving peg or ball needs to remain a separate, functioning interface. Applying cement to that interface can bond the parts, alter tolerances, or leave a brittle or damaged surface. Bandai’s official directions do not establish cement as a friction coating for articulated joints, so do not infer that use from the seam-removal method.
When a stationary part can be permanently bonded
Use a permanent bond only when the part is intended to stay fixed and you have confirmed that the adhesive and the specific plastics are compatible. Examples can include a decorative seam or a permanently installed armor connection, but not a shoulder, elbow, hip, ankle, wrist, weapon socket, or any attachment you expect to pose or remove.

- Apply cement to the mating edges of the two plastic halves.
- Close the halves and squeeze them together while the cement dries.
- After the bonded seam has cured, sand it progressively.
- Begin with 400–600 grit sanding paper for the initial cleanup.
- Finish with 1000-grit or finer paper for polishing.
This process is for creating a permanent plastic bond and finishing the resulting seam. It is not a loose-joint tightening technique. Read the product label for the cement you own, keep it off transparent parts and areas that must remain movable unless the product directions specifically support that use, and test an unseen area when compatibility is uncertain.
Ventilation and handling
Bandai’s Gunpla tips page states: “Most importantly! Please do this in a well-ventilated area; open a window or a door.” Follow that advice, avoid breathing cement fumes, keep the container closed when not in use, and follow the product’s safety label. Work where a spill cannot reach finished surfaces, and let the bonded part dry before sanding or loading it into the model.

What to do when a part is broken, missing, or defective
Do not use a joint-tightening treatment to compensate for a cracked or snapped component. Photograph the defect, identify the kit and the part location from the manual, and check the current support policy before sanding, gluing, or discarding anything. A replacement can preserve the original engineering better than a repair that changes the fit.

Bandai Namco America’s U.S. and Canada policy
For customers living in the United States or Canada, Bandai Namco America says certain broken, lost, or defective model-kit components may qualify for replacement, subject to manufacturer availability. The policy allows up to six parts per kit purchase and asks for requests within 90 days of receipt or delivery, or with an eligible Bandai Namco event purchase receipt. “Minor looseness” is expressly excluded, so an intact joint that simply feels loose should not be presented as a defective part.
Information to gather before contacting support
- Clear images of the defective component and the area where it belongs.
- The complete purchase receipt.
- A photograph of the warning sticker.
- The kit’s UPC.
- The kit name, purchase date, and your country of residence.
Availability and terms can change, and the U.S./Canada policy should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Check the live Bandai Namco America defective-replacements policy before submitting a request. If the manufacturer does not cover your region or the issue is excluded, ask the retailer about its current return or replacement process.
Compare the three practical paths
| Path | Best for | Articulation after the intervention | Reversibility | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reversible fit or friction correction | An intact moving joint that will not hold a pose | Should remain, if the correction is controlled | Potentially reversible, depending on what is used | Over-tightening, chemical incompatibility, or stress on a thin peg |
| Permanent cement bond | A stationary plastic connection or seam that should never separate | Not applicable; the connection becomes fixed | Low | Accidentally immobilizing a joint or bonding incompatible materials |
| Manufacturer or retailer replacement | A missing, broken, or defective component | Preserves the original design if an appropriate part is supplied | Not a repair; the defective part is replaced | Regional limits, deadlines, exclusions, or unavailable stock |
Common mistakes and how to recover
You glued a moving joint
Stop moving it immediately. Do not force the joint to “break free,” because that can tear the peg or socket. Let the product cure according to its label, then assess whether the parts can be separated without damage. If the connection is now cracked or permanently seized, document it and investigate replacement or kit-specific repair advice rather than applying more solvent.
The stationary part still falls off after assembly
Return to the manual and verify orientation, seating, and the condition of the tabs. Check whether paint, topcoat, or a nub is preventing full insertion. If the connection is intended to remain removable, do not escalate automatically to permanent cement; correct the fit or use a reversible approach appropriate to the confirmed materials.

The joint became too tight
Do not force a pose. Remove the part, inspect for stress marks, and reduce or remove the added friction material if that can be done without damaging the plastic. Test through a smaller range first, then restore the full motion gradually.
You cannot identify the plastic or adhesive compatibility
Do not guess from appearance. Keep the intervention reversible, test only on an inconspicuous area or spare piece, and obtain kit-specific information before using a solvent or permanent adhesive on a visible component.
The defect appeared before you assembled the kit
Photograph the unopened or newly inspected component, retain proof of purchase and packaging information, and check the applicable support or retailer policy before attempting a repair. A repaired part may be harder to document as received defective.

- Dry-fit critical joints before adding paint, topcoat, or adhesive.
- Follow the manual’s orientation for pegs, hinges, and ball joints; do not force a part that resists normal seating.
- Keep cement away from articulation points and removable accessories.
- Use gradual sanding when correcting a fit, and stop before a connection becomes stressed or permanently altered.
- Support large limbs and backpacks when posing so a small joint is not carrying unnecessary leverage.
- Store the model so gravity is not continuously pulling on a weak connection.
- Keep records of the kit name, purchase date, receipt, and UPC while replacement eligibility may still matter.
A concise decision checklist
- Is the part moving when it should be fixed, or failing to hold when it should move?
- Is the plastic intact, or is there a crack, break, missing piece, or manufacturing defect?
- Does the manual show a different orientation or seating position?
- Must the connection remain poseable or removable?
- Have you confirmed the plastic and finish are compatible with any proposed adhesive or friction aid?
- Can you test a reversible change before committing the visible part?
- If the part is defective, are you within the applicable regional deadline and able to provide the requested photos and proof?
If the answers point to an articulated, intact connection, use a cautious fit correction and preserve movement. If they point to a stationary connection, a permanent bond may be appropriate after a compatibility check. If they point to damage or a defect, pursue support first.
