A Logitech mouse can still move and click normally while its scroll wheel stops responding. The cause may be a blocked wheel, a USB or Bluetooth connection problem, Windows’ scrolling configuration, or a Logitech Options/Logi Options+ setting such as Smooth Scrolling, Ratchet, or Freespin.

Use the checks below in order. Start with the physical and connection tests before changing software settings. That approach helps distinguish a faulty mouse from a Windows 11 or application-specific problem.

1. Check whether the wheel fails everywhere

Before changing drivers or reinstalling software, test the wheel in more than one application. Open a browser and scroll a long webpage, then try File Explorer or Windows Settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It fails in every application: continue with the hardware, connection, and system checks below.
  • It works in some applications but not others: the mouse may not be defective. Microsoft notes that some applications do not support particular mouse features, and Logitech software can apply application-specific customizations.
  • The wheel scrolls but the center click does not work: check the middle-button assignment in Logitech software rather than treating this as a scrolling failure.

Also test whether the wheel physically turns. If it feels jammed, unusually loose, or does not produce its normal detents, dirt or mechanical damage may be involved.

Logitech M510 Full Size Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse
  • Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
  • You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
  • Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.

2. Clean around the scroll wheel

Turn the mouse off or disconnect it. Hold it so the wheel is accessible, then use short bursts of air around both sides of the wheel while turning it. You can also use a soft, dry brush to remove visible debris.

Do not pour liquid into the mouse or force the wheel sideways. Microsoft lists dirt blocking keys or sensors as a hardware problem, and Logitech specifically recommends checking the wheel’s physical behavior when troubleshooting scroll failures. If cleaning does not change anything and the wheel feels mechanically damaged, software fixes are unlikely to help.

3. Reconnect a USB Logitech mouse

For a wired mouse or a wireless Logitech mouse using a USB receiver, perform a clean connection test:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Unplug the mouse cable or USB receiver.
  2. Wait briefly so Windows can unload the device.
  3. Connect it again.
  4. Try a different USB port.
  5. If it is plugged into a USB hub, remove the hub and connect it directly to the computer.

A hub may not provide enough power or may be contributing to the connection failure. If the mouse works from a different port, the original port or hub is the more likely cause.

4. Check a wireless mouse’s power and connection

For a battery-powered Logitech mouse, install fresh batteries or fully charge its internal battery. Check the power switch and inspect the underside for a reset control if your model has one.

Bluetooth-connected mice follow a different troubleshooting branch from USB devices. Verify that Bluetooth is enabled in Windows and reconnect the mouse through Settings > Bluetooth & devices. A mouse using a Logitech USB receiver should instead be tested with another USB port and, preferably, without a hub.

Logitech M185 Compact Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse - Swift Grey
  • Compact Mouse: With a comfortable and contoured shape, this Logitech ambidextrous wireless mouse feels great in either right or left hand and is far superior to a touchpad
  • Durable and Reliable: This USB wireless mouse features a line-by-line scroll wheel, up to 1 year of battery life (2) thanks to a smart sleep mode function, and comes with the included AA battery
  • Universal Compatibility: Your Logitech mouse works with your Windows PC, Mac, or laptop, so no matter what type of computer you own today or buy tomorrow your mouse will be compatible
  • Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug in the tiny nano USB receiver and start working in seconds with a strong, reliable connection to your wireless computer mouse up to 33 feet / 10 m (5)
  • Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)

If possible, test the mouse on another computer. Logitech says that a mouse working on another computer can point to a problem with the original computer, such as its USB chipset driver. A wheel that fails on multiple computers is more suggestive of a mouse-side fault.

5. Check Windows 11 mouse and scrolling settings

Windows 11 places the relevant controls here:

Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse

Review the scrolling options on that page. Confirm that the wheel is set to scroll multiple lines or the intended scrolling behavior rather than an unexpected option. Adjust the number of lines temporarily and test the wheel again.

Windows’ settings do not repair a broken wheel, but they can expose a configuration problem. Remember that an application may ignore or handle a Windows mouse feature differently, so verify the result in at least two programs.

6. Check Logitech Options or Logi Options+

Logitech’s current software recommendation is Logi Options+ for supported devices. The older Logitech Options application may still be relevant for some legacy models, but the available controls depend on the mouse.

In Logi Options+, open your mouse settings and follow this path:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Select POINT AND SCROLL.
  2. In the right pane, select Scroll wheel on the mouse image.
  3. Review the Smooth Scrolling setting.
  4. Turn Smooth Scrolling off temporarily and test the wheel.

Logitech includes disabling Smooth Scrolling in its Windows scroll-wheel troubleshooting procedure. If scrolling immediately returns, leave the feature disabled or re-enable it later to confirm whether the problem comes back.

  • The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere

On advanced Logitech mice, also inspect these controls:

Setting What to check
Scroll speed Set it to a normal value and test in a long webpage.
Scroll direction Change it temporarily if the wheel responds in the wrong direction.
SmartShift sensitivity Review this if the wheel changes between click-to-click and free-spinning behavior unexpectedly.
Ratchet/Freespin Ratchet is the precise, detented mode; Freespin is the high-speed mode. Test Ratchet if the wheel seems to spin without producing useful scrolling.

These controls are not available on every Logitech model. If Logi Options+ does not show them, that is usually a model-support difference rather than a missing Windows setting.

7. Restore the middle-button assignment

If the wheel scrolls but pressing it does not open a link, pan a document, or perform the expected action, check the center-button mapping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Logitech Options or Logi Options+, open the mouse customization screen and inspect the control labelled Middle button. Logitech allows this button to be remapped, so assign it back to the standard middle-button action or to the function you want.

This step applies to a non-working wheel click, not to a wheel that will not rotate or scroll.

8. Check for a Windows or device-driver problem

After trying another port and another computer, check Windows for device updates through the normal Windows device-management tools. Windows may report that no driver update is available; that result does not necessarily mean you missed a newer driver, because Microsoft notes that an update may simply not exist.

Logitech M705 Marathon Full Size 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse - Black
  • Click more. Scroll more. Do more. Logitech Marathon Mouse M705 uses far less power than comparable wireless mice from other companies. That means you can go up to three full years between battery changes.*
  • Hyper-fast scrolling lets you fly through long documents and Web pages with a single spin of a nearly frictionless metal scroll wheel.
  • The sculpted, right-hand shape guides your hand to a naturally comfortable position and places customizable control within your reach. Two thumb buttons lets you move quickly between Web pages.**
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There's no need to unplug it when you move around, so there's less worry of it being broken or lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
  • Laser grade tracking delivers smooth, responsive, precise cursor control on surfaces that cause problems for standard optical mice, such as polished or wood-grain tables.***

Do not rely on random command-line “fixes” or unofficial driver-download sites. The current Microsoft and Logitech procedures for this problem use Windows Settings, reconnection and cross-computer testing, and Logitech’s supported configuration software; they do not specify a verified command-line repair.

If the mouse works on another computer but not yours, install pending Windows updates, restart the PC, and investigate the affected computer’s USB, Bluetooth, or chipset drivers through the computer manufacturer when appropriate. If it fails everywhere, the mouse or its wheel mechanism is the stronger suspect.

9. Use the result to identify the likely cause

What you observe Most likely direction Next action
Wheel fails only in one application Application support or per-app customization Check that application’s settings and Logitech’s application profile.
Wheel works after disabling Smooth Scrolling Logitech software configuration Leave Smooth Scrolling off or review the profile settings.
Mouse works in another USB port Port or hub problem Use the working port and avoid the hub.
Wireless mouse starts working with fresh batteries Low power Replace or charge the battery and check the power switch.
Mouse works on another computer Original PC, USB, Bluetooth, or chipset issue Update Windows and investigate the computer’s connection drivers.
Wheel fails on several computers and feels abnormal Mouse hardware failure Check warranty or replace the mouse.

10. Use the correct Logitech software

For a supported modern device, use Logi Options+. Logitech states that its Firmware Update Tool is no longer supported or maintained and recommends Logi Options+ for supported devices. Logitech Preference Manager is also no longer supported or maintained.

That means installing the old Firmware Update Tool should not be the default recommendation for a scroll-wheel problem. Use the software Logitech currently provides for your model, and do not assume that every mouse exposes the same wheel controls.

Should I turn off Smooth Scrolling?

It is a useful diagnostic step. In Logi Options+, open the mouse settings, select POINT AND SCROLL, select Scroll wheel on the mouse image, and turn Smooth Scrolling off. Logitech includes this change in its Windows scroll-wheel troubleshooting guidance.

Why does my Logitech scroll wheel work in Chrome but not in another application?

Some applications do not support every mouse feature, and Logitech software can use application-specific settings. Check the affected application and its Logitech profile before concluding that the mouse is broken.

How do I fix a Logitech mouse wheel that clicks but will not scroll?

Check whether the wheel physically turns, clean around it, test another USB port or connection method, and review Logitech’s wheel settings. If it fails on another computer too, the wheel mechanism may be defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install the Logitech Firmware Update Tool?

No. Logitech says the Firmware Update Tool is no longer supported or maintained. Use Logi Options+ when your mouse is supported, and follow the software guidance for your specific model.

The Bottom Line

Start by testing the wheel in multiple applications, cleaning around it, and reconnecting the mouse directly to the PC. Then check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse and, for supported Logitech devices, disable Smooth Scrolling under POINT AND SCROLL > Scroll wheel in Logi Options+.

If another USB port, fresh battery, or another computer resolves the problem, the connection or original PC is responsible. If the wheel fails across computers and has abnormal physical movement, software changes are unlikely to help—the mouse probably needs service or replacement.
