Start by identifying which iPhone feature is failing. A widget placed in the Lock Screen layout, the Today View that appears when you swipe right, and a Live Activity are different systems with different settings. On iOS 16 or later, you can restore a missing Lock Screen widget by editing the Lock Screen and adding it again. If the problem is the swipe-right view, enable Today View and Search under the passcode settings. If the item is a Live Activity, check the individual app’s Live Activities setting. Ordinary widgets do not have a documented universal refresh button or guaranteed update interval, so a stale display may require app-specific help.
First, identify what you are trying to fix
Before changing settings, look at where the information should appear. Apple documents three related but separate experiences:

A widget can be present in one of these places and absent from another without anything being broken. Use the section that matches the symptom instead of applying every setting at once. For example, turning on Today View access will not place a weather tile below the clock, and adding a calendar tile will not restart a delivery status.

Apple says Lock Screen widgets are available with iOS 16 or later. If the iPhone is running an earlier release, the Lock Screen widget editor described below will not be available. Check the installed iOS version in the Settings app before troubleshooting an empty widget area. If the phone meets the version requirement, continue with the view-specific checks rather than assuming that every app supports every widget type.

The version requirement applies to the Lock Screen widget feature itself. It does not guarantee that a particular third-party app supplies a Lock Screen widget, a Today View widget, or a Live Activity. Those choices come from the app and can vary by iOS release.
Re-add a missing widget to the Lock Screen
This is Apple’s documented path for a widget that should sit directly on the Lock Screen.
- Wake the iPhone so the Lock Screen is visible.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen until the wallpaper and Lock Screen choices appear.
- Tap Customise.
- Choose the Lock Screen you want to change, if the phone presents more than one.
- Tap Add Widgets.
- Choose a widget from the list, or drag it into the widget area.
- Tap Done to save the layout.
After tapping Done, lock the phone again and look at the exact area you edited. If you use more than one Lock Screen, make sure you changed the one that is currently active. A widget added to another saved Lock Screen can appear to be missing simply because a different Lock Screen is showing.
If the widget picker does not let you place another item, the layout may have no room. Remove one of the existing widgets and try Add Widgets again. The available choices also depend on which apps have supplied Lock Screen widgets; an app cannot be selected there if it does not offer that widget type.
When the widget is listed but will not fit
The Lock Screen area has a fixed layout. A widget that is wider than the remaining space can prevent another choice from being inserted. In Customise, remove an existing item, then add the desired widget and tap Done. This changes only the layout; it does not create a new widget type for an app that does not provide one. If you need several pieces of information, compare their sizes in the picker and choose a combination that fits the available row.

When the expected app is not in Add Widgets
Check that you are editing the intended Lock Screen and that you opened Add Widgets, not the separate Today View. If the app still does not appear in the picker, Apple’s Lock Screen instructions do not provide a setting that can manufacture a missing app widget. The app may not support Lock Screen widgets, or its support may depend on the app and iOS version. Contact the app developer for that specific availability question.

Do not infer support from the fact that an app has a home-screen widget. An app can offer one widget family in one location and not another. Likewise, an app can offer a Live Activity without offering a permanent Lock Screen widget. The picker is the practical test for what the current app installation supplies.
If the problem is the swipe-right widget screen
Swiping right from the Lock Screen opens Today View; it is not the row of widgets edited with Customise and Add Widgets. Apple provides a separate permission for seeing Today View while the phone is locked.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode on an iPhone that uses Face ID, or Touch ID & Passcode on a model that uses Touch ID.
- Enter the passcode if requested.
- Under Allow Access When Locked, turn on Today View and Search.
- Lock the iPhone and swipe right to test the view again.
This switch controls access to Today View while locked. It is not the switch for adding widgets directly below the Lock Screen clock, so changing it will not add a missing item to the Lock Screen layout. If Today View works after unlocking but not while locked, this access setting is the relevant distinction to report when asking for help.
Determine whether the stale item is a Live Activity
A Live Activity is an app-provided status display rather than an ordinary widget. Apple describes examples such as Maps directions, sports updates and delivery orders. These items are intended to show current progress, so a problem with one should be investigated through the app’s Live Activities controls.

- Tap Apps.
- Select the app that supplies the activity.
- Look for Live Activities and review its setting.
Not every app provides a Live Activities setting. If the menu is absent, that absence is not proof that the iPhone is malfunctioning; the app may simply not expose that control. The app developer is the appropriate source for questions about whether a particular event should produce a Live Activity, how long it should remain visible, or why a specific event is not represented.

Live Activity versus ordinary widget

Do not use the Live Activities path to repair a normal calendar, weather or battery widget. Conversely, re-adding an ordinary widget will not recreate a missing delivery or sports activity. Identify the content first: a continuously changing trip or score is more likely to be a Live Activity, while a compact forecast or battery reading is an ordinary widget.
What to do when an ordinary widget shows old information
Apple’s consumer guides explain how to place widgets and how to allow Today View while locked, but they do not describe a universal manual refresh button or promise a fixed refresh interval for ordinary widgets. That means there is no single iPhone setting that can be guaranteed to refresh every stale widget. Avoid claims that a restart, a purchase, or one hidden switch will repair every app.
Use this order of checks:
- Confirm the location. Decide whether the old information is in a Lock Screen widget, Today View, or a Live Activity. Apply only the matching procedure.
- Verify the layout. For a Lock Screen widget, open Customise > Add Widgets, remove the item and add it again, then tap Done.
- Check locked access. If the information is in the swipe-right panel, verify Today View and Search under Allow Access When Locked.
- Check the app-specific control. For a Live Activity, open the app’s page at Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities, when that setting exists.
- Record the exact app and iOS version. Widget and Live Activity behavior can depend on the app’s implementation and the installed iOS release. This information lets Apple Support or the app developer investigate the correct component instead of treating all widgets as identical.
These steps separate a placement problem from an access problem and from app-managed status information. They do not promise that re-adding a widget will repair stale data; Apple’s available guidance does not establish that as a universal remedy.
Separate a display problem from a data problem
Ask two different questions: “Is the tile present?” and “Is the value current?” If the tile itself is gone, use the Lock Screen editor or verify Today View access. If the tile remains visible but its value is old, first identify the supplying app and whether the item is actually a Live Activity. Re-adding a tile can confirm that the layout is saved, but it cannot prove that the app is generating fresh information.
When you test, note what you saw and where. “Calendar widget is absent below the clock” points to a layout issue. “The same calendar appears in Today View only after unlocking” points to locked access. “A delivery card remains on yesterday’s order” points to an app-managed Live Activity. Describing the symptom precisely prevents support from sending you through unrelated settings.
Use the symptom to choose the next action

- Confirm the phone is on iOS 16 or later for direct Lock Screen widgets.
- Identify whether the item belongs below the clock, in Today View, or in a Live Activity.
- For the direct Lock Screen area, edit the correct saved Lock Screen and use Add Widgets.
- Remove an existing tile if there is not enough room, then tap Done.
- For swipe-right access, enable Today View and Search under the matching passcode menu.
- For a delivery, route or score, inspect the supplying app’s Live Activities page when available.
- Write down the app name, iOS version, the exact text or number that is stale, and whether the problem occurs while locked, unlocked, or both.
This checklist also tells you what not to do. Do not keep changing passcode access when the missing item is below the clock, and do not keep rearranging ordinary widgets when the missing item is an app-managed activity.

When to contact Apple or the app developer
Escalate after you have identified the feature and completed its matching documented setting. Include:
- The iPhone model’s authentication type (Face ID or Touch ID), when the issue concerns locked access.
- The installed iOS version.
- The app name and whether the item is a Lock Screen widget, Today View widget or Live Activity.
- Whether the app appears in Add Widgets or offers Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities.
- Whether removing and re-adding the Lock Screen widget changed anything.
- What information is stale and where it is displayed.
Contact the app developer for questions about an app’s widget implementation, missing widget choices or a Live Activity that the app should provide. Contact Apple Support when the documented Lock Screen editor or locked-access controls themselves are unavailable or behave differently from the steps above. Giving both parties the same precise description avoids treating an app limitation as an iOS setting problem.

Nothing in the documented procedures requires a purchase, accessory or repair tool. The fix paths are software settings, Lock Screen layout editing and app-specific controls. Buying a case, charger or other hardware will not add a widget to the picker or create a Live Activities setting. If a widget remains unavailable after the relevant checks, spend the effort on identifying the responsible app and contacting the appropriate support channel instead of replacing working hardware.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing Today View with Lock Screen widgets: the swipe-right panel has its own access switch.
- Looking for a Live Activity in Add Widgets: Live Activities are app-managed status displays, not ordinary widget tiles.
- Editing the wrong Lock Screen: a widget can be saved on one Lock Screen while another is active.
- Assuming every app supports every feature: Apple notes that not all apps provide a Live Activities setting, and an app must supply a widget before it can appear in the picker.

Why can I see widgets after unlocking but not while the phone is locked?

Is Today View the same as the Lock Screen widget row?
