Start with Settings > Display > Motion smoothness and choose Adaptive, if your Fold shows that option. Adaptive raises the display refresh rate when appropriate, making scrolling and transitions look smoother. If the entire phone still stutters, the cause is more likely outdated software, background apps, low available memory, a power-saving profile, or a troublesome app. Work through the steps below in that order; they are reversible and do not require buying accessories or repair parts.
Menu names and available settings differ by Fold generation, One UI version, carrier, region and installed apps. The steps therefore identify the current Samsung path where it is documented and call out places where your phone may use different wording.
First, identify what is actually lagging
“Choppy animations” can describe two different problems. A display running at a lower refresh rate can make otherwise normal motion look less fluid. Separately, the phone may be struggling to process an animation, load an app or respond to touch. Changing refresh rate helps the first condition, but it cannot guarantee that a busy or malfunctioning app will render faster.
Check whether the problem is system-wide
Open and close the notification shade, move between the Home screen and Settings, scroll a long page, and switch between the cover and main screens. If all of those actions stutter, treat the symptom as a system or settings issue first. If only one app is affected, skip ahead to the app-isolation section rather than repeatedly changing display settings.

Compare the cover and main screens
Note whether the cover screen, unfolded screen, or both show the problem. A difference between screens can point to a refresh-rate or app-layout behavior specific to that display, while identical stutter on both screens makes a broader software or resource issue more likely. This observation does not by itself prove a hardware fault.
Remember what changed
Write down whether the lag began after a system update, an app installation or update, a change to battery settings, or a period of heavy multitasking. Samsung lists outdated software, background apps, insufficient available memory and temporary system errors among common reasons a Galaxy device may slow, freeze or stop responding. Samsung’s slow or unresponsive device guidance uses those possibilities as the starting point for troubleshooting.
| What you observe | Most useful first check |
|---|---|
| Scrolling and transitions look uniformly less fluid everywhere | Motion smoothness, then power-saving and performance settings |
| Only one downloaded app stutters | Update that app, then test in Safe mode if the timing matches its installation or update |
| Lag started after several apps were left open | Close recent apps and use Device care’s memory cleanup |
| The phone is frozen or touch no longer responds | Perform the forced restart described below, then check for updates |
Set Motion smoothness to Adaptive
On supported models, go to Settings > Display > Motion smoothness. Select Adaptive, tap Apply if your software presents that button, and test the same scrolling or transition that looked choppy. Samsung describes Adaptive as automatically selecting a higher refresh rate; the Galaxy Z Fold6 manual says this produces smoother animations and scrolling. The exact maximum and switching behavior depend on the model and software.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If you choose Standard, the phone prioritizes battery conservation and generally uses 60 Hz in Samsung’s Galaxy guidance. Adaptive can use a higher rate, up to 120 Hz on supported Galaxy devices, but that does not mean every app or every moment runs at 120 Hz. The setting changes how frequently the display refreshes; it does not remove delays caused by an overloaded app or a system process.
| Motion smoothness option | Visual behavior | Battery emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive | Automatically adjusts to a higher refresh rate for smoother animations and scrolling on supported devices | Uses more power than Standard in situations where the higher rate is selected |
| Standard | Uses a lower, generally 60 Hz, refresh rate | Conserves battery |
Why a higher refresh rate may not cure every stutter
Refresh rate describes how often the panel updates, not how quickly an app finishes its work. Adaptive can make a completed transition appear more fluid, but it cannot make a frozen app respond, rebuild a slow screen or compensate for a process that is consuming memory. That is why the same test should be repeated after each change: compare a Settings scroll, a Home-screen swipe and the affected app separately. If Settings becomes smooth while one app remains choppy, the display setting is doing its job and the remaining problem is app-specific.
If Motion smoothness is missing
Samsung only exposes the control on supported devices, and labels can change between One UI releases. Confirm that you are looking under Settings > Display, install available system updates, and check whether a battery-saving mode is active. Do not assume that every Z Fold generation has identical refresh-rate choices. Samsung’s general refresh-rate instructions are available at its Galaxy phone support page; use the model-specific instructions for your device when the menu differs.
Update the phone, close apps and restart
Software maintenance addresses compatibility problems and temporary system errors before you investigate more disruptive causes. Samsung says updates can improve performance, stability and compatibility, although an update is not a guarantee that every app will immediately behave correctly.

- Open Settings > Software update.
- Tap Download and install (or the equivalent label shown on your One UI version).
- Install an available update, keeping the phone charged and connected as instructed on screen.
- After the phone reboots, test system animations before reopening every app.
Next, open the Recent apps view and close apps you are not using. This is a diagnostic step, not a recommendation to force-close everything constantly: Android normally manages memory itself, but an app that is stuck or consuming resources can make the interface feel unresponsive.
Restart normally
Use the power menu and choose Restart. A restart clears temporary processes without deleting your files or app data. Test the phone for a few minutes after it comes back, before restoring a large multitasking session.
Force-restart a frozen Fold
If the screen does not respond, Samsung’s U.S. support instructions say to hold the Side key and Volume down together for more than seven seconds, until the device restarts. Button labels and timing prompts can vary by One UI version. A forced restart is for an unresponsive phone; it is not a substitute for regular updates or a way to improve refresh rate.
Use Device care without deleting the wrong things
Open Settings > Device care. Some versions and regions call this area Battery and device care. Review the memory and storage panels, then use the built-in cleanup actions that explain what they will do.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClean unused background memory
- In Device care, tap Memory.
- Choose Clean now to stop unused background apps.
- Return to the app or screen that was stuttering and test it again.
Samsung’s Quick optimization feature can close background apps and clear unneeded memory. The button may not appear when Device care considers the phone to be in good condition. Its absence is not evidence that your Fold is defective.
Review storage deliberately
Low free storage can contribute to slow behavior, but the safe action is selective cleanup. Device care asks you to choose categories or files. Remove only items you recognize and no longer need. Do not indiscriminately delete photos, downloads or recordings, and do not clear an app’s data merely because an animation is slow; clearing data can remove local settings or unsynchronized content.

Check battery-saving and performance profiles
A battery-focused setting can make a healthy phone feel less responsive. Open the battery or Device care settings and look for Power saving and Performance profile. Availability varies by Fold model and software, so do not expect every option listed below.
Power saving
Samsung documents an optional Power saving setting that can limit CPU speed to 70 percent when enabled. That figure describes the setting’s limit, not a measured reduction in animation performance for every phone. Temporarily turn Power saving off, then repeat the same animation test. If responsiveness changes, decide whether the smoother behavior is worth the additional battery use.
Light performance profile
Some Galaxy software offers a Light performance profile that prioritizes battery life over processing speed. Samsung says this profile does not apply to game performance, but it can still be relevant when you are diagnosing general interface responsiveness. Compare the phone with the profile enabled and disabled rather than assuming it is the cause.
Keep any setting that meets your normal battery needs; the purpose of this check is to separate a deliberate power trade-off from an unexplained fault. If the relevant controls are not present, continue with the other steps instead of installing a third-party “booster.”
Isolate a troublesome app
If the stutter began after downloading or updating an app, test that possibility before resetting the phone. First update the suspected app through its normal store, and check whether the problem occurs only while it is open. If the app is the only trigger, its own settings or compatibility may be responsible even when the rest of One UI is smooth.

Open Samsung Members and look for Support or Phone diagnostics, then run the available tests. Samsung Members is not installed or offered in every market, so this step is optional. Follow the app’s instructions and record any reported result rather than treating a passed test as proof that every software component is healthy.
Use Safe mode to test downloaded apps
Safe mode starts the phone with downloaded apps disabled. The exact entry sequence varies by model and software, so use the device-specific Safe mode instructions in Samsung Support if the standard key sequence shown on your Fold differs. Once in Safe mode, perform the same scrolling and transition tests.

- If the lag disappears in Safe mode, uninstall apps that were installed or updated just before the issue began. Remove one suspect at a time and test after each removal.
- If the lag remains in Safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the trigger. Continue with system settings, updates and service escalation.
Back up information that an app stores locally before uninstalling it, and check whether its account has synchronized your data. Safe mode is an isolation test; it is not intended as a permanent operating mode.
Use a repeatable test instead of judging by memory
Small frame drops are easy to misremember, especially when a Fold changes between its two displays. Pick two or three repeatable actions: scroll the same Settings page, open and close the notification shade, and launch the app that first revealed the problem. Perform them after each change, with the same screen configuration and roughly the same number of recent apps open. Note whether Adaptive, Standard, Power saving or Light mode was enabled. This simple log helps distinguish a real improvement from a change caused by switching screens or workloads.
Recommended Free Tools
Test after the phone has completed an update and rebooted, not while installation is still running. Also test both folded and unfolded states when the symptom is screen-specific. A result that changes only on one display is useful evidence for support, but it is not proof that the hinge or panel is damaged.
Pitfalls to avoid while troubleshooting
- Do not confuse smoothness with speed. A 120 Hz-capable display can show motion more fluidly while an app still takes the same time to load.
- Do not delete indiscriminately. Device Care cleanup is selective; removing files or clearing app data can cause data loss without fixing animation timing.
- Do not install “RAM booster” utilities. Samsung’s documented controls are sufficient for this diagnosis, and an extra utility can add another background process.
- Do not assume one Fold behaves like another. Refresh-rate choices, Device care labels, performance profiles and Safe mode instructions vary with model and software.
- Do not call a passed diagnostic a clean bill of health. Samsung Members tests are useful checks, but they do not prove that every app or software component is problem-free.
When the problem needs service
Request Samsung support or service if choppy performance continues after you have updated the software, restarted, checked Motion smoothness, reviewed Device care and power settings, and tested for an app cause. Provide the technician with the Fold model, One UI version, when the symptom started, whether it affects one or both screens, and which steps changed it.
Do not infer a damaged display, hinge or main board from animation stutter alone. Samsung lists faulty apps and cracked screens among possible causes of a slowly responding or frozen screen, but the symptom by itself does not establish a hardware diagnosis. Stop using the device and seek prompt assistance if you also notice physical damage, unusual heat, swelling, liquid exposure or repeated shutdowns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this troubleshooting can and cannot establish
Adaptive versus Standard is a display-refresh decision: Adaptive favors fluid-looking motion, while Standard favors battery conservation. It is not a benchmark of the Fold’s processor, and the official guidance cited here does not provide independent performance statistics or a guarantee for a particular generation or One UI release.
Similarly, a successful memory cleanup or a restart only shows that a temporary process or resource condition may have contributed. It does not prove that the phone has permanently more available memory, nor does it identify which app caused the condition. Use the before-and-after comparison to choose the next diagnostic branch, not as a hardware verdict.

A practical order of operations
- Determine whether the lag affects the whole interface, one app, the cover screen, the main screen or both.
- Set Settings > Display > Motion smoothness to Adaptive when available.
- Install pending software updates, close unused recent apps and restart.
- In Device care, run Memory > Clean now and review storage selectively.
- Compare behavior with Power saving and any Light performance profile disabled, if those controls exist on your model.
- Use Samsung Members diagnostics and Safe mode when the timing points to a downloaded app.
- Contact Samsung support or request service when the issue survives these checks or is accompanied by physical or thermal symptoms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Adaptive Motion smoothness fix every laggy animation?
No. Adaptive can use a higher refresh rate, up to 120 Hz on supported Galaxy devices, so scrolling and completed transitions look smoother. It cannot repair an overloaded app, low available memory or a system process that is not responding.
Which is better on a Fold: Adaptive or Standard?
Choose Adaptive when visual fluidity is the priority. Choose Standard when conserving battery matters more; Samsung’s general guidance describes Standard as generally using 60 Hz. Compare both with the same test because the best choice depends on your usage.
Why can’t I find Motion smoothness?
The control is limited to supported models and can move or change names between One UI versions. Check Settings > Display, install updates, and consult model-specific Samsung instructions. Do not assume every Z Fold generation offers identical choices.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does Power saving slow animations?
Samsung documents an optional Power saving setting that can limit CPU speed to 70 percent. That is a setting specification, not a guaranteed performance loss. Turn it off temporarily and repeat your test to see whether responsiveness changes on your Fold.
What does Device care’s Clean now do?
Device care’s Memory > Clean now stops unused background apps. Quick optimization can also close background apps and clear unneeded memory. The button may be absent when Samsung considers the phone to be in good condition.
Should I clear app data to stop stutter?
Not as a first step. Clearing data can remove local settings or unsynchronized content. Update the app, test whether it alone triggers the lag, and use Safe mode to isolate recently installed or updated apps before considering more disruptive actions.
How do I know whether an app is responsible?
If the issue started after an app installation or update and disappears in Safe mode, uninstall apps added or updated around that time one at a time, testing after each removal. Safe mode entry steps vary by model, so follow Samsung’s device-specific instructions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When should I contact Samsung service?
Escalate after updates, restarts, Motion smoothness checks, Device care cleanup, power-setting comparisons and app isolation fail to help. Give support your model, One UI version, start date, affected screen and test results. Physical damage, swelling, unusual heat or repeated shutdowns warrant prompt assistance.
The Bottom Line
Set Motion smoothness to Adaptive first, then update One UI, close unused apps, restart and run Device care > Memory > Clean now. Compare Power saving and Light profile settings, and use Safe mode when a recent app is suspect. These steps separate a refresh-rate preference from a broader software problem; persistent or physically accompanied symptoms belong with Samsung support.
