Fix PS4 Remote Play problems by isolating the two network links first: the PS4-to-router connection and the Android-to-network connection. Check the actual symptom, test both endpoints, reduce Wi-Fi congestion, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Android when practical, and connect the PS4 to the router with Ethernet if possible. Then verify Remote Play, account, rest-mode, and software settings before investigating NAT.
PlayStation lists 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the baseline for Remote Play, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance. Those are recommendations, not a latency guarantee: a speed test can meet them while a noisy wireless link still causes stutter or disconnects.
Understand which connection is failing
Remote Play sends the game video from the PS4 through the router and network to the Android device, while controller input travels back. That creates two separate wireless or wired segments:
Recommended Free Tools
| Segment | Common connection | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 to router | Ethernet/LAN or PS4 Wi-Fi | Signal strength, walls and other obstructions, local wireless congestion, and whether an Ethernet cable is available |
| Android to network | 5 GHz Wi-Fi, another Wi-Fi band, or mobile data | Signal stability where you play, competing downloads, congestion, and whether other Android apps also lose connectivity |
A fast internet subscription does not prove that either radio link is stable. A brief interference burst, packet loss, or a congested access point can make the picture judder even when a speed-test result looks healthy. Conversely, a total drop usually points to a broken path, an endpoint that is not reachable, or a Remote Play setup problem rather than merely reduced image quality.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Classify the symptom before changing anything
- Consistently soft or low-quality video: the connection is staying alive but available bandwidth or signal quality is poor.
- Intermittent stuttering, freezes, or delayed controls: investigate wireless interference, packet loss, and competing traffic on either segment.
- A complete disconnect: check whether Android Wi-Fi works in other apps, confirm the PS4 is reachable and correctly configured, and then inspect NAT or port reachability.
Write down when the problem occurs: immediately at connection, only after several minutes, only in one room, or only while another person is downloading. That pattern tells you which test to run next and prevents unrelated router changes.
Run the baseline tests
Test Android independently
- Use the Android device in the same place where you normally play and open several ordinary online apps or web pages.
- If those apps also time out or repeatedly reconnect, the problem is not specific to Remote Play. Stabilize the Wi-Fi or mobile connection first; PlayStation advises contacting your internet service provider when Wi-Fi itself is unreliable.
- Run a connection speed test on the Android device. Record upload and download results, but treat them as a capacity check rather than proof of low latency or clean Wi-Fi.
Test the PS4 connection
- On the PS4, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Note the console’s upload and download results and whether the test completes consistently. A single successful test cannot reveal short wireless dropouts, so repeat it if the symptom is intermittent.
- Compare the results with PlayStation’s guidance: 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download is the stated baseline; 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download is the recommendation for best performance.
The figures apply in both directions. Upload capacity matters because the PS4 has to send the game stream, while download capacity matters on Android for receiving it. Neither figure is a published latency, jitter, or packet-loss limit, so meeting 15 Mbps does not promise lag-free play.
Reduce Android-side Wi-Fi congestion
Prefer 5 GHz when the signal is stable
PlayStation recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Remote Play device. Use that band if your router offers it and the Android device is close enough to maintain a strong, steady signal. 5 GHz often has less congestion than 2.4 GHz, but it loses strength more quickly through walls and floors. If the 5 GHz signal is weak where you sit, a stable alternative can outperform a nominally faster but intermittent connection; move closer to the router and retest rather than selecting a band by name alone.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

- Pause Android app updates, cloud backups, file transfers, and video uploads while playing.
- Stop downloads on other household devices temporarily, or ask users of those devices to pause high-bandwidth activity.
- Close or idle devices that are continuously syncing large files.
- Restart the Android device after congestion has been removed, then start a fresh Remote Play session.
Do not assume that a speed test performed after pausing traffic represents the connection during normal household use. If Remote Play improves only when other devices are quiet, congestion is part of the cause; schedule large transfers outside play sessions or reduce their bandwidth in the relevant app or router feature.

Check whether the room is the problem
Play in the same location used for the test. If moving a few metres toward the router makes the stream stable, distance or obstruction is implicated. Thick walls, floors, cabinets, and nearby electronics can weaken or disturb Wi-Fi. This test concerns the Android-to-router link only; improving Android Wi-Fi will not repair a weak PS4-to-router connection.
Strengthen the PS4-to-router link
Use Ethernet as a diagnostic and remedy
If the PS4 can be connected to the router, run an Ethernet LAN cable from the console to a LAN port on the router. This removes the PS4’s local Wi-Fi hop and is a useful diagnostic: if stuttering stops while Android remains on the same network, the PS4’s wireless link was likely the weak segment. It does not wire the Android device and cannot correct interference on the Android side or a problem beyond the router.
No particular cable category or brand is required by the guidance. The important change is replacing the PS4’s wireless connection with a wired path. Keep the cable routed safely and confirm the PS4 is using the wired connection before comparing sessions.
If the PS4 must stay on Wi-Fi
- Move the PS4 and router closer together where possible.
- Reduce walls, cabinets, and other obstructions between them.
- Retest at the same time of day, because neighboring networks and household traffic can change.
Wiring the console is optional, not a guarantee. A wired PS4 can still experience Remote Play problems if the Android link is congested, the account setup is wrong, or the upstream network is unstable.

Verify every Remote Play requirement
A network that appears fast enough cannot connect to a console that is offline, signed in to the wrong account, or not enabled for Remote Play. Check the following on the PS4 and Android device:
- The PS4 is powered on, or its rest-mode configuration permits Remote Play to wake it.
- Remote Play is enabled on the PS4.
- The PS4 system software and the Android Remote Play app are current.
- The same PlayStation account is signed in on the PS4 and in the Android app.
- The PS4 is activated as the primary console for that account, as required for PS4 Remote Play.
- If you start from rest mode, the PS4 power settings allow it to stay connected to the internet and allow it to be turned on over the network.
After changing a setting, fully close and reopen the app and initiate a new connection. Do not judge the result from a session that began before the console finished applying its configuration.
Restart and isolate the app or device
- Close the Remote Play app on Android.
- Restart the Android device.
- Restart the PS4 if it is behaving unusually or has not been rebooted since a system update.
- Open Remote Play again and sign in with the account used on the console.
- If the issue continues, uninstall and reinstall the Remote Play app, then test before changing router settings.
Reinstallation is a way to rule out a damaged or incomplete app installation. PlayStation’s reviewed checklist supports restarting and reinstalling, but it does not establish clearing Android app data, changing video codecs, or altering battery-optimization settings as official fixes. Treat those suggestions cautiously because they can create new sign-in or background-connection problems without addressing a weak network path.
Use NAT and port checks only when the symptom points there
Check NAT type in the mobile app
The Remote Play mobile app exposes NAT information in its Settings area. PlayStation warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play from working. NAT describes how reachable the devices are through the router or carrier; it is not a measure of raw internet speed. A connection can pass a speed test yet fail when Remote Play needs the required inbound and return traffic.

Know the required UDP port
PlayStation states that Remote Play uses UDP port 8572. If the app reports a NAT-related problem, or if the console is reachable on the home network but not from the intended network, router or carrier filtering may be relevant. Port changes are an advanced step, not a universal cure for lag.
- Record the current NAT type and the exact failure pattern before editing the router.
- Consult the router manufacturer’s instructions for UDP port 8572 and avoid changing unrelated firewall rules.
- If you do not understand port forwarding, public versus private addresses, or the router’s security implications, ask your internet service provider or router manufacturer for help.
- On mobile data, contact the carrier instead; carrier-grade NAT may not be under your control.
Do not promise that opening UDP 8572 will improve picture quality. It can address reachability, but it cannot add bandwidth, lower Wi-Fi interference, or repair packet loss. Restore any temporary router change if it has no effect or creates other connectivity issues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether mobile data is practical
Android Remote Play can use mobile data when the carrier and network support the feature. Test it only after Wi-Fi troubleshooting, and expect it to consume more data than most ordinary video-streaming services because the game video is interactive and continuously sent while you play.
- Check that the carrier permits the required Remote Play traffic and does not block or heavily restrict it.
- Review the plan’s remaining allowance before a long session.
- Monitor usage after a short test; do not extrapolate a single brief session to a full month without checking the device’s meter.
- Expect performance to vary with cellular signal, tower load, and carrier NAT even when a speed test is strong.
Mobile data is therefore an alternative path for diagnosis or occasional play, not evidence that the home Wi-Fi problem is fixed. If Wi-Fi is stable and mobile data is not, keep the Wi-Fi path for regular sessions and investigate carrier restrictions only when mobile play is essential.

A symptom-led troubleshooting sequence
When video is always blurry or quality drops immediately
- Run the Android and PS4 tests and compare both directions with the 5 Mbps baseline and 15 Mbps best-performance recommendation.
- Pause household downloads and Android background transfers.
- Try 5 GHz Wi-Fi on Android at a location with a strong signal.
- Use Ethernet for the PS4 if available, then retest.
- If quality remains low despite stable links, note whether the speed test falls under the thresholds during the actual play period; a peak result from another time may not represent the connection you are using.
When the game stutters every few seconds
- Test another Android app in the same room to see whether Wi-Fi itself is dropping packets or reconnecting.
- Move closer to the router and pause competing traffic.
- Compare a session with the PS4 on Ethernet against one with the PS4 on Wi-Fi.
- If only the wireless PS4 session stutters, keep the console wired or reposition it and the router to reduce obstructions.
- If both wired and wireless PS4 sessions stutter while Android Wi-Fi is stable, repeat the endpoint tests during the event and investigate congestion or upstream instability rather than changing codecs.
When Remote Play disconnects completely
- Confirm Android has working connectivity in other apps.
- Confirm the PS4 is powered on or correctly configured for rest-mode Remote Play, is online, and uses the same account as Android.
- Check that the PS4 is activated as the primary console and that system software is current.
- Restart both endpoints and reinstall the app if necessary.
- Inspect NAT type. If it is Type 3, or the app indicates a reachability issue, escalate UDP 8572 and router or carrier support rather than repeatedly rerunning speed tests.
When it works at home but not on mobile data
The difference points to the cellular path, carrier policy, or carrier NAT. Verify that mobile Remote Play is supported, monitor data usage, and ask the carrier about restrictions. Do not assume that changing the home router will fix a cellular-only failure.
What not to infer from a successful speed test
- It does not prove low latency: the test may measure throughput without exposing delay during gameplay.
- It does not prove low packet loss: a short test can miss intermittent wireless errors.
- It does not identify the faulty segment: test results from Android say little about the PS4’s Wi-Fi signal.
- It does not guarantee 15 Mbps throughout the session: household use and network load change over time.
Use the tests as evidence alongside symptom timing, device-to-router distance, competing traffic, and the wired-versus-wireless comparison. That combination is more useful than chasing a single number.
