Start by lowering the game’s graphics quality and frame-rate target, then choose a frame rate the phone can sustain without becoming uncomfortably hot. Separate network latency from rendering stutter, use Game Mode according to whether you need short-term performance or longer battery life, keep the phone ventilated, and avoid heavy gaming while charging. These steps address the common cycle in which high CPU/GPU load creates heat, heat triggers thermal throttling, and throttling causes falling FPS and faster battery drain.
Identify which problem you actually have
“Lag” is not one fault. In a competitive match, a delayed response can come from the network, while a choppy picture can come from the phone failing to render frames consistently. Overheating and battery drain can contribute to the second problem, but they do not create network latency by themselves.

Android Developers explains that high CPU and GPU utilization generates heat. Once the device becomes too hot, thermal throttling downclocks CPU and GPU speed; that affects both game performance and the rate at which the battery drains. A phone can therefore begin a match smoothly and stutter later without any change to the network.
Use this order of operations during a match
Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to tell what helped. Use the following sequence and test one match or training session after each major change.

- Lower the game workload. Set graphics quality to a lower option and reduce the frame-rate target. In PUBG Mobile, the official Help Center specifically suggests lower screen options such as “smooth” or “balance” to lower heat and battery consumption.
- Choose a sustainable frame rate. If 90 or 120 FPS cannot remain stable, use 60 FPS. Consistent frame pacing is usually more useful for aiming than a high number that collapses after the phone heats up.
- Apply Game Mode deliberately. Select a performance-oriented mode for a short competitive session only when temperatures remain controlled. Select a battery-oriented mode when the session is long or heat is already limiting performance.
- Cool the device safely. Move to a hard, ventilated surface, remove conditions that trap heat where safe, and take a break if the phone becomes uncomfortably hot.
- Check the connection separately. If the image is smooth but players teleport or actions arrive late, troubleshoot the network instead of raising graphics or performance limits.
- Review charging and battery condition. Use the supplied or manufacturer-approved adapter and inspect battery-health information when the platform provides it.
Lower graphics before raising performance limits
Reduce the work the phone must render
Open the game’s graphics or display section and lower the screen-quality preset first. The exact labels vary by game, but common choices include a lower-quality mode, “smooth,” or “balance.” Then reduce shadows, effects, anti-aliasing, view distance, or similar options if the game exposes them. Lower settings reduce the amount of work demanded from the GPU and can prevent the heat buildup that causes later stutter.
Do not assume the highest preset is best for esports. A visually richer scene can consume enough power to force the phone into a slower thermal state. A slightly less detailed image that remains consistent for the whole match gives you a more predictable view of moving targets.
Test FPS targets one step at a time
After lowering quality, select the highest frame-rate option that remains stable in a full-length session, not merely in the opening menu. If the phone starts at 90 or 120 FPS and falls sharply once hot, try 60 FPS. A stable 60 FPS can feel more responsive than an unstable 90 or 120 FPS because each frame arrives at a predictable interval.

Frame-rate labels are targets, not guarantees. The actual result changes with the phone model, game engine, map complexity, ambient temperature, background activity, and battery condition. Record how the game behaves after 10 to 15 minutes, when heat has had time to accumulate, rather than judging only the first few minutes.
Keep visual and control settings separate
Lowering graphics quality does not require lowering every control setting. Keep touch sensitivity, button placement, gyroscope behavior, and aim configuration unchanged while testing rendering changes. That isolates the performance variable and prevents a graphics fix from being confused with a change in muscle memory.

Understand why a stable 60 FPS can beat an unstable 120 FPS
Higher FPS can reduce the time between visual updates, but only while the phone can sustain it. When thermal limits reduce CPU or GPU speed, frame delivery becomes irregular. Irregular frame pacing is perceived as hitching even if a counter briefly reports a high peak.
Android’s FPS-throttling documentation describes throttling as a way to stabilize frame rate and reduce battery use. It reports up to a 50% reduction in GPU power and up to a 20% reduction in overall system power, with results dependent on the device and conditions. Those figures are maximums from the documented intervention, not a promise for every phone or game.

Configure Android Game Mode without creating more heat
Android Game Mode can expose performance and battery priorities, although the menu name and location differ by manufacturer and Android version. Look for a Game Mode, Game Dashboard, or gaming panel in Settings or in the game’s overlay. If the game is not listed, the phone may require you to add it manually.
Performance mode
Performance mode prioritizes responsiveness and may allow a higher sustained workload. Use it for a short ranked session only after reducing graphics enough that the phone remains comfortable. If the chassis becomes hot, brightness changes automatically, or FPS declines, performance mode is adding demand that the thermal system cannot sustain. Switch to a lower frame-rate target or a battery-oriented mode rather than continuing to raise limits.
Battery mode
Battery-oriented mode favors longer runtime and lower power use. It is appropriate for extended practice, travel, or any situation in which heat is the limiting factor. The game may run at a lower frame rate, but the reduced workload can keep frame delivery steadier over time.

Backbuffer resizing
Android’s Game Mode intervention documentation reports that backbuffer resizing can reduce GPU load by up to 30% and overall system power by up to 10%, with results varying by device and game. If your phone exposes this option, treat it as an efficiency tool rather than a guaranteed FPS increase. Verify the result in the actual game: a lower GPU load is useful only if input and frame pacing remain acceptable.

Improve the playing environment
- Play on a hard, ventilated surface rather than a blanket, bed, or other material that blocks the phone’s heat path.
- Keep the phone out of direct sun and away from other warm electronics.
- Remove a thick case temporarily if the case clearly traps heat and the phone remains protected from drops and debris.
- Keep vents and openings unobstructed, and do not cover the back of the phone with your hand for the entire session.
- Take a break when the chassis becomes uncomfortably hot, when the screen dims unexpectedly, or when performance begins falling.
Do not put a hot phone in a freezer or against a wet surface. A sudden temperature change can create condensation, and moisture can damage the device. Let it cool gradually in a dry, shaded, ventilated place.
Optional clip-on cooling
A clip-on phone cooler can be an optional accessory when sustained heat is the main constraint. It cannot fix a poor network connection, and it does not remove the need to lower an excessive graphics or FPS target. Check that the cooler fits the phone, does not block buttons or cameras, and does not interfere with wireless charging or the case. Condensation risk, noise, extra power draw, and portability are practical trade-offs; stop using any cooler that creates moisture.
Why charging can make the problem worse
Gaming while charging combines the game’s power demand with charging heat. It can keep the phone warm even after you lower the FPS target. Charging is not a cooling strategy. If you must play while connected, use an approved adapter, keep the phone ventilated, and stop if temperature rises uncomfortably.
Google Android Help warns: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use. This kind of drain can damage your battery.” Heat therefore affects both the current match and long-term battery condition.

Separate network lag from frame-rate stutter
Signs of a network problem
Network latency is an arrival-time problem. Players may teleport, shots may register late, or the game may briefly freeze and then catch up while the phone remains cool and the local animation is otherwise smooth. Use the in-game ping or connection indicator if available. A high or fluctuating value points toward the connection rather than the GPU.
Low-risk connection checks
- Pause app updates, cloud backups, video streaming, and large downloads on the phone and on heavily used devices sharing the connection.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point or test a different network if the game’s connection indicator shows instability.
- If Wi-Fi is unreliable, compare one short session on a stable cellular connection, subject to your data plan and local coverage.
- Restart the network equipment only when you are not in a match and have permission to do so.
- Return to the same graphics and FPS settings after the connection improves. Network fixes cannot compensate for thermal throttling, and graphics changes cannot repair packet loss.
Do not diagnose from a single ping number alone. Matchmaking region, server load, routing, signal quality, and local congestion can change the result. Compare several matches and note whether the symptom is teleporting opponents, delayed hit registration, or visibly uneven animation.

Use the supplied or approved charger
Google recommends the supplied or manufacturer-approved adapter. Other adapters can charge slowly or damage the phone or battery. Inspect the cable and connector for damage, and do not continue using a charger that becomes unusually hot or intermittently disconnects.
Measure drain under comparable conditions
Battery percentages are difficult to compare when brightness, network type, frame rate, and temperature change at the same time. For a useful comparison, keep the same game, screen brightness, network, and session length. Test one configuration at a time: first your usual settings, then lower graphics and 60 FPS, then the preferred Game Mode. Record starting and ending battery percentage and whether the phone was charging.

On iPhone 6 and later, Apple provides Battery Health information and can recommend battery replacement when needed. Open the battery settings and review the maximum-capacity and performance messages shown by the phone. A worn battery may lose charge quickly or trigger performance management sooner, so a settings change alone may not restore the runtime of a newer battery.

Android battery-health menus vary by manufacturer and model. Use the built-in battery settings and the manufacturer’s support guidance rather than assuming that a third-party reading is definitive. If the phone becomes hot during light use, shuts down unexpectedly, swells, or shows physical battery damage, stop gaming and seek qualified service.

Device model, game engine, ambient temperature, network quality, and battery age change every result. There is no universal preset that is optimal for every mobile esports game.
Practical setups for common situations
Short ranked session with a cool phone
- Use the game’s balanced or smooth graphics option.
- Select the highest frame-rate target that remains stable in a complete match.
- Use performance Game Mode only if the phone stays comfortable.
- Play on a ventilated surface and avoid charging unless necessary.
Long practice session or travel
- Use lower graphics and a stable 60 FPS or lower target.
- Select battery-oriented Game Mode.
- Keep the phone shaded and ventilated, and schedule breaks.
- Carry the approved charger, but charge between sessions when possible rather than using charging as a heat-management method.
Phone becomes hot and FPS drops mid-match
- Finish the immediate safe action in the match, then exit rather than repeatedly restarting the game.
- Remove the case if it is trapping heat, move to a hard surface, and let the phone cool gradually.
- Lower graphics and FPS before the next match.
- Use battery Game Mode or disable extra performance features if the phone offers that control.
- If the problem occurs in light games or ordinary phone use, check battery condition and seek service for abnormal heat.
Animation is smooth but opponents teleport
- Keep the graphics settings unchanged while checking the in-game ping.
- Stop competing downloads and backups.
- Test a closer or less congested network.
- Compare several matches before changing FPS or buying cooling accessories.
When a setting change is not enough
Persistent stutter after lowering graphics, capping FPS, and cooling the phone can indicate a game update, a device-specific compatibility issue, storage pressure, background activity, or hardware wear. Note the game version, phone model, operating-system version, temperature symptoms, and whether the problem occurs in more than one game. Update the game and operating system through their normal official channels, then contact the game developer or device manufacturer if the issue is reproducible.
Stop using the phone and obtain professional help if you see battery swelling, a damaged charging port, a burning smell, repeated thermal warnings, or shutdowns during light use. Performance tuning is not a safe substitute for battery or hardware repair.
A repeatable test plan
Use this checklist whenever you change a setting:
- Start with the same battery level, network, brightness, and game mode.
- Play a representative match or training period long enough for heat to build.
- Record ping behavior separately from FPS or visible stutter.
- Note chassis temperature by comfort and warnings rather than touching the phone with a thermometer substitute.
- Compare battery percentage used over the same duration.
- Keep the change only if it improves the symptom you intended to fix without creating an unacceptable trade-off.
The goal is not the highest benchmark number. It is a frame rate that remains predictable, a connection that does not introduce avoidable delay, and a temperature that the phone can sustain for the length of your session.
