A software KVM that feels slow usually has a network, clipboard-transfer, or local-software problem—not a failing monitor. Diagnose the symptom in this order: test the connection between the computers, switch from Wi‑Fi to Ethernet if latency is unstable, return logging to Info, then investigate recent updates, large clipboard transfers, macOS Handoff, antivirus controls, and screen-layout or cursor-lock settings. The exact menus and behaviors depend on the product and version; the detailed steps below use Synergy documentation as a documented example and identify where its advice should not be generalized to every software KVM.

Start with the symptom

Software KVMs share keyboard and mouse events—and often clipboard data—over a local network. They do not normally carry the desktop video signal. Deskflow describes its implementation as keyboard, mouse, and clipboard sharing over TCP, explicitly “without video”: Deskflow project description. That architecture means a cursor can lag even while the display itself remains perfectly smooth, and clipboard transfers can temporarily compete with input traffic.

What you see Most useful first check Likely area
Cursor movement is jerky or delayed, especially intermittently Test latency to the other computer; compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet Wireless quality, routing, or logging overhead
The cursor stops while copying a large image or file Check clipboard size and transfer behavior Clipboard payload competing with input
The computers never connect or switching stops at an edge Verify product/version, network, layout, firewall, VPN, and cursor-lock settings Configuration or traffic filtering
Mouse and keyboard work, but clipboard sharing does not Confirm clipboard sharing is enabled and test OS clipboard integrations Permission, platform integration, or unsupported desktop behavior

Do not apply every fix at once. Change one setting, reproduce the symptom, and record whether it improved, worsened, or did not change. That gives you a usable rollback point if a setting reset or security change is required.

Fix cursor lag or input delay

1. Test the network before changing software

Synergy’s support guide says, “The most common cause for a mouse cursor to lag is a bad Wi-Fi connection.” Its recommended first diagnostic is a ping test to the other computer: Synergy: What to do when the mouse cursor lags?. Use the normal ping utility for your operating system and target the other machine’s local IP address, for example ping 192.168.1.25. Run it while reproducing the delay and look for intermittent timeouts or obvious swings in response time. The documentation does not define a universal “acceptable” ping number, so do not treat one arbitrary threshold as proof that the network is healthy.

Test both directions when possible. A computer can have a good path to the router while the reverse path is congested, a wireless client is roaming between access points, or a VPN is sending local traffic through a remote gateway. If the delay appears only when one computer is on Wi‑Fi, that comparison is more informative than a single ping result.

2. Use Ethernet when Wi‑Fi is responsible

If the ping test or the timing of the symptom implicates Wi‑Fi, connect the affected computer to the same local network with an Ethernet cable and test again. Synergy identifies Ethernet as the best remedy when Wi‑Fi is the cause. A laptop without a built-in network port may need a USB Ethernet adapter. Keep the change conditional: wired networking will not fix a bad layout, a blocked port, or a clipboard transfer that is saturating an otherwise healthy link.

For a fair comparison, leave the software KVM configuration unchanged, move only one computer from Wi‑Fi to Ethernet, and repeat the same cursor movement and screen-switching task. If the problem disappears, investigate wireless coverage, access-point roaming, interference, or power-management settings before returning to Wi‑Fi.

3. Return Synergy logging to Info

When the computers are already wired or the ping test looks normal, check the logging level on every Synergy computer. Synergy warns that debug or verbose logging can itself contribute to lag. Set logging to Info, restart the affected components if the product requests it, and retest. This is a Synergy-specific control; other software KVMs may use different names or logging defaults.

Do not leave verbose logging enabled indefinitely just because it produces more information. Turn it on only long enough to capture a reproducible failure, then return to the documented normal level. On a managed machine, save the relevant log and ask IT before changing diagnostic or security settings.

4. If the problem started after an update, preserve the layout and reset carefully

A sudden change immediately after an application update points to changed settings, a migration problem, or a version-specific regression. Before resetting anything, take screenshots or write down the server/client roles, computer names, screen arrangement, hotkeys, and clipboard preferences. Synergy’s troubleshooting guidance recommends a clean reset or reinstall when lag begins after an update: Synergy: Basic troubleshooting steps.

5. Check whether a clipboard transfer is holding up input

Large clipboard payloads can make a healthy connection feel frozen. Synergy 3’s copy/paste documentation for version 3.7.2 says the default copy limit is 4 MB and can be adjusted with a whole-number setting from 1 to 1000 MB. Raising that limit permits larger transfers but can worsen responsiveness because more data competes with mouse and keyboard traffic. Treat those values as Synergy 3 v3.7.2 settings, not general limits for software KVMs.

Reproduce the problem without copying anything. If cursor movement is smooth until you copy a large image, reduce the clipboard limit temporarily or disable cross-computer clipboard sharing while testing. A smaller limit may make a paste fail or truncate the transfer, which is preferable to an unexplained pause when responsiveness matters.

Synergy’s lag article also describes changed clipboard behavior in Synergy 3 v3.8.0-beta and Synergy 1 v1.22.0-beta and later: clipboard data is sent after mouse movement has rested and in pieces so input is not held behind the entire transfer. Those are beta-version details, not a universal remedy or a guarantee that a stable release behaves the same way. Do not install a beta solely to solve lag on a production computer without confirming compatibility and keeping a rollback plan.

6. Test macOS Handoff when a Mac pauses

Synergy documents a macOS Handoff interaction in which cursor movement can pause. On the affected Mac, temporarily turn Handoff off and repeat the same workflow. If the pause disappears, restore Handoff first, then disable Synergy clipboard sharing if you do not need to copy between computers. That preserves Handoff for Apple-device workflows while removing the feature that is competing with the KVM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If turning Handoff off changes nothing, turn it back on; it was not the cause. This test applies to the documented macOS scenario and should not be assumed to diagnose clipboard issues on Windows, Linux, or every KVM implementation.

7. Check antivirus and endpoint security without weakening protection blindly

Antivirus or endpoint-security software can inspect the KVM process or block its local-network traffic. Synergy lists antivirus interaction as a possible cause of lag and connection trouble. On a personal computer, check whether the security product has an event or prompt for the KVM application and allow it on the trusted local network when appropriate. On a managed computer, involve IT rather than disabling protection or creating a broad firewall exception.

Use the narrowest rule possible: permit the specific application and required local-network traffic, test, and then review the rule. If the symptom remains unchanged, restore the original security setting instead of leaving a permanent exception.

Fix connection or screen-switching failures

Install the same product family and a compatible version

All computers in the KVM group must run the same product family. Synergy 1 and Synergy 3 are separate product lines; mixing them is not a supported way to upgrade one computer at a time. Synergy’s basic checklist was documented with Synergy 3 v3.7.2 and Synergy 1 v1.21.4 guidance. Check the current version supported by the product you have installed, and update the group consistently rather than guessing that similarly numbered builds are interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the local network path

Put the computers on the same reachable local network and repeat the ping test. A guest Wi‑Fi network, client isolation, VLAN boundary, or VPN can make two machines appear online while preventing direct local connections. Temporarily disconnect the VPN or use split tunneling only if your organization permits it, then retest. Restore the VPN afterward if it was not the cause.

Correct the screen layout

Open the KVM’s layout editor and place the screen edges next to one another exactly as they are positioned physically. If the pointer should move from the right edge of computer A to the left edge of computer B, those edges must be adjacent in the software layout. A gap, reversed orientation, or overlapping arrangement can look like a failed connection even when keyboard and mouse traffic is working.

Test a simple two-screen arrangement before restoring a complex three- or four-computer layout. This isolates geometry from networking and makes an incorrect edge easy to spot.

Check VPN, firewall, and antivirus filtering

Use the security product’s application or network log to see whether it blocked the KVM. Allow the application on the trusted local network only as required, then test switching again. Do not turn off the firewall on an untrusted network merely to prove a point. If a temporary test is necessary, disconnect from public networks, make the smallest change, reproduce the symptom, and immediately return the original protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Release cursor-lock or Scroll Lock behavior

Some setups intentionally keep the pointer on one computer through a cursor-lock feature or the keyboard’s Scroll Lock state. If switching appears completely dead, press Scroll Lock once and check the product’s cursor-lock setting or hotkey. A locked pointer can mimic a network failure because the KVM is connected but refusing to cross the configured boundary.

Treat Linux Wayland support as desktop- and version-dependent

Synergy’s general checklist advises Linux users to check what works on their desktop rather than promising universal Wayland support. Clipboard and input behavior can differ between desktop environments, display servers, and product versions. If mouse switching works under one session but clipboard sharing fails under another, record the distribution, desktop environment, display-server session, and KVM version before reporting the issue. The available guidance does not establish one fix that works across all Wayland combinations.

Fix clipboard sharing when mouse and keyboard still work

Verify that clipboard sharing is enabled

Open the product’s clipboard or Copy/Paste settings on every computer. In Synergy 3, copy/paste is enabled by default and configurable; confirm that the option has not been disabled on one side after an update or reset. Test a small plain-text phrase before testing an image. Plain text establishes whether synchronization works at all without introducing a large payload or format-conversion issue.

Separate transfer-size problems from permission problems

Use a small text copy, then a small image, then a larger image. If text works but a large image stalls or never arrives, inspect the product’s clipboard-size limit and reduce the test payload. For Synergy 3 v3.7.2, the documented default is 4 MB and the configurable range is 1–1000 MB. Synergy’s separate beta guidance describes a 128 MB default for the specified newer beta behavior, compared with 3 MB in Synergy 1 and 4 MB in Synergy 3. Those numbers belong to the named versions and should not be presented as universal software-KVM limits.

Look for competing operating-system clipboard features

An operating system or another synchronization utility may monitor and rewrite the clipboard at the same time as the KVM. Temporarily pause the competing feature, copy a short text string, and test again. Re-enable it if the result is unchanged. On macOS, use the Handoff test described above; Synergy specifically recommends disabling Synergy clipboard sharing after restoring Handoff if cross-computer clipboard use is unnecessary.

Check permissions and desktop-session limitations

Confirm that the KVM has the input, accessibility, or clipboard permissions required by the operating system. Permission names vary, so use the product’s current instructions for your OS rather than applying a Windows, macOS, or Linux fix to another platform. For Linux Wayland, record the desktop session and product version because the available documentation does not establish a universal clipboard solution.

Use a controlled recovery sequence

When several symptoms occur together, use this order so each result has a clear meaning:

  1. Write down the product name, exact version, operating systems, server/client roles, and screen layout.
  2. Reproduce the failure with a small text clipboard test and without any clipboard transfer.
  3. Ping the other computer while the problem is occurring; note timeouts or intermittent latency, not just the average response.
  4. Move the Wi‑Fi computer to Ethernet and retest if wireless quality is suspect. Use a USB Ethernet adapter if the computer has no Ethernet port.
  5. For Synergy, set logging to Info on every computer and retest.
  6. Check for an update immediately preceding the failure. Preserve the configuration before considering a clean reset or reinstall.
  7. Inspect clipboard limits, Handoff on macOS, competing clipboard tools, antivirus events, VPN routing, and firewall rules.
  8. Reduce the layout to two adjacent screens and verify that cursor-lock or Scroll Lock is not active.
  9. Restore any temporary security or OS setting that did not affect the symptom.

This sequence avoids a common mistake: changing the firewall, reinstalling the application, and altering clipboard limits simultaneously, then having no way to know which change mattered.

What a software KVM can and cannot do

A software KVM transmits control data between computers. The documented Deskflow model uses TCP for keyboard, mouse, and clipboard synchronization and does not transmit video. Consequently, it cannot reduce monitor refresh latency, fix a slow display cable, or make a remote desktop stream smoother. If only the pointer is delayed while both displays remain responsive, network and input-path troubleshooting is appropriate. If the entire screen image is delayed, investigate the display, remote-desktop, or graphics path separately.

Product-specific behavior matters. The detailed lag and clipboard settings cited here come from Synergy documentation, while Deskflow’s project description establishes the general software-KVM architecture. Do not copy Synergy menu labels, clipboard defaults, beta behavior, or Wayland assumptions to Barrier, Deskflow, or another derivative without checking that project’s current documentation.

When to escalate

Collect the exact symptom, timestamps, operating-system and desktop-session versions, KVM version, network type, ping observations, whether Ethernet changed the result, clipboard payload size, and any relevant firewall or antivirus event. Include the smallest layout that reproduces the issue. This evidence lets support distinguish packet loss from a layout error, a clipboard-size stall, an OS integration conflict, or a version-specific regression without requiring you to weaken security or repeatedly erase your configuration.
