A Kindle Scribe can appear to be “not syncing” for three different reasons: its notebooks are not backing up to Amazon, a one-time email share failed, or an export to a connected cloud service was expected to update automatically. Use the matching fix below. First turn on an internet connection and run a manual sync; then verify that you are checking a destination that actually supports the type of content you created.

First identify what is failing

“Sync” and “send” are separate operations on Kindle Scribe. Automatic cloud backup protects notebooks in your Amazon account. An email share creates a downloadable copy for a recipient. A connected cloud service receives an export that you initiate. Treating all three as one feature leads to misleading tests, such as looking for a handwritten notebook in a phone app or expecting a Google Drive copy to change after every edit.

What you want Destination How it starts What you should expect
Protect a notebook and use it on another Scribe Amazon cloud and other Kindle Scribe devices Internet connection plus Sync enabled; you can start a manual sync The notebook is backed up. Handwritten annotations are currently available across Kindle Scribe devices.
Send a snapshot to someone Registered email address or another email recipient Open Share and choose Quick send or Share via email A message containing a download link. The link expires after seven days.
Move a copy to a connected service Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote Use the service’s import or export command A manually transferred copy, not a live notebook that updates itself.
Convert handwriting and send it Email associated with the Amazon account registered to the Scribe Choose “Convert to text and quick send” Converted text in the generated email workflow; this option has an account-email requirement.

Run the section that matches your symptom instead of repeatedly toggling settings. If you do not know which symptom you have, begin with the cloud-backup check, then test a small email share separately.

Fix Kindle Scribe cloud backup and device sync

Amazon’s baseline is simple: Kindle Scribe notebooks are backed up to the cloud when the device is connected to the internet and Sync is turned on. A notebook can therefore remain only on the device if either condition is missing.

  • More room to read, write, and think – Just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, with fluid performance and a large 11" display that gives you space to work comfortably.
  • Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.

1. Confirm the Scribe is online

  1. Wake the Scribe and open its network controls.
  2. Connect to a working Wi-Fi network. If other devices cannot reach the internet on that network, resolve the connection before testing the Scribe.
  3. Leave the Scribe connected while the sync operation runs; do not put it into sleep mode midway through a large notebook transfer.

The support guidance establishes internet access as a requirement, but it does not promise a universal completion time. A slow or unstable connection can make a successful backup look delayed.

2. Turn Sync on and start it manually

  1. Open Quick Actions and tap the Sync icon.
  2. If you prefer the menu, open Menu and choose Sync and Check for Items.
  3. Wait for the command to finish, then open the notebook again and allow a moment for the library state to refresh.

The Sync setting is also documented under More > Settings > Device Options. Check that it is enabled before starting another manual sync.

3. Do not repeatedly switch Sync off and on

Amazon warns that notes, highlights or bookmarks made while Sync is turned off may be lost when Sync is turned back on. If Sync was disabled, stop editing, enable it once, and run the manual command. Repeated toggling is not a harmless first-line reset because it can put locally created changes at risk.

4. Verify the result on the right device

After the manual sync, sign in on another Kindle Scribe using the same Amazon account and check the notebook library. A successful cloud backup does not mean every annotation type appears in every Kindle application. Use the destination rules in the next section before concluding that the sync failed.

Why a synced notebook may be missing from the Kindle phone or tablet app

Amazon distinguishes text-based annotations and highlights from handwritten notebook content. After sync, text annotations and highlights can be accessed across Kindle surfaces. Handwritten annotations are currently accessible across Kindle Scribe devices. Consequently, a notebook that is present on another Scribe but absent from a phone Kindle app may reflect a supported-destination limitation rather than a failed backup.

  • Handwritten notebook pages: check another Kindle Scribe signed in to the same account; this is the documented cross-Scribe destination.
  • Typed annotations and highlights: check the relevant Kindle surfaces after sync.
  • Phone or tablet expectation: do not use the absence of a handwritten notebook there as proof that Amazon cloud backup failed.

If the notebook is missing on another Scribe as well, return to the connectivity, Sync-setting and account checks. If it appears on another Scribe but not in the app you are using, the distinction above explains the different result.

Fix notes that will not send by email

Email sharing is an explicit, one-time Share action. It is not a continuous feed of later notebook edits.

Send a notebook, document or book copy

  1. Open the book, document or notebook containing the material.
  2. Display the top bar.
  3. Tap Share.
  4. Choose Quick send to the registered email address, or choose Share via email and complete the recipient flow.
  5. Open the generated message at the destination address and use its download link.

Amazon says the download link in the generated email expires after seven days. Download the file within that window; an expired link requires you to create a new share. Editing the notebook after sending does not update the already generated file, so share again when you need a newer version.

When “Convert to text and quick send” is missing

The handwriting-conversion workflow has a narrower requirement than ordinary sharing. Amazon says the email must be associated with the Amazon account used to register the Scribe. Verify the account email in your Amazon account settings if that conversion option is absent.

That account-email requirement is documented for Convert to text and quick send. Do not assume it applies to every Share method; ordinary Quick send or Share via email may present a different path.

Separate a delivery problem from a conversion problem

  • If the Share controls are present but the recipient cannot retrieve the file, treat it as a generated-link or recipient-mailbox issue and create a fresh share after confirming the address.
  • If the conversion command itself is missing, verify the registered account email first.
  • If conversion starts but reports a sync-and-convert error, use the version-specific recovery steps below rather than repeatedly sending the same request.

Fix Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote transfers

Connected cloud-drive integration is an import/export workflow. Amazon states that files do not automatically sync between the Scribe and connected drives. A copy uploaded to one of these services is not a live notebook and will not change when you later write on the Scribe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the service as a manual destination

  1. Connect the supported service account through the Scribe’s documented connection flow.
  2. Choose the notebook export or upload command when you want a copy in Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote.
  3. Wait for that transfer to complete, then open the destination service and verify the newly created file or notebook copy.
  4. Repeat the export whenever you need to capture later edits.

The available destinations and exact export controls can vary by supported Scribe model and connected account. The important behavior is constant: these transfers are user-initiated, not background synchronization.

Resolve a service-account mismatch

  1. On the Scribe, open Settings > Your Account and note the Amazon account currently registered to the device.
  2. Restart the cloud-service connection flow.
  3. Use the same Amazon account in that connection flow as the one registered to the Scribe.
  4. Run a fresh manual export and check the destination for the new copy.

If an old connection was authorized under a different Amazon account, reconnecting with the matching account is more useful than repeatedly pressing export on the mismatched connection.

Recover from a sync-and-convert error

Amazon’s sync-and-convert instructions apply to the handwriting-conversion error path specifically. They are not a universal cure for every notebook, Wi-Fi, email or cloud-drive problem. Use the following order when conversion reports repeated sync errors or its option is unavailable.

Check internet access and software

  1. Confirm that the Scribe is connected to the internet.
  2. Check that the device is running current software.
  3. Run a manual sync from Quick Actions or Menu > Sync and Check for Items.

Restart when the conversion option is missing

Amazon’s troubleshooting notes call out software version 5.16.2 or higher: if the conversion option is missing on that version range, restart the device, then check the notebook again. This instruction is tied to the missing-option symptom and should not be presented as a guaranteed fix for unrelated failures.

Redownload after repeated conversion errors

  1. Remove the affected notebook from the device.
  2. In the library, tap the notebook’s cover to download it again.
  3. Retry the handwriting conversion after the redownload has completed.

Removing the local copy and downloading it again refreshes the notebook data used by the conversion process. Use this step only after confirming connectivity and software, because it changes the device’s local copy.

Allow extra processing time for large notebooks

Amazon notes that synced notebooks of 100 or more pages can take over 10 minutes to process for conversion. That is a processing-time note, not a general notebook-sync guarantee or a universal timeout. Keep the device connected and avoid starting repeated conversion requests while a large notebook is still being processed.

A practical decision tree

Symptom Most relevant action What not to infer
Notebook is absent on another Scribe Connect to the internet, verify Sync under More > Settings > Device Options, then run Sync from Quick Actions or Menu. Do not assume an email or cloud-drive export will repair Amazon cloud backup.
Handwritten notebook is absent from a phone Kindle app Check another Kindle Scribe and confirm the account. Do not treat the phone app’s absence as proof that the notebook was not backed up.
Email share never arrives or the link no longer works Repeat Share > Quick send or Share via email and download the new link promptly. Do not expect the old link to remain valid beyond seven days or to include later edits.
Convert to text option is missing Verify the email associated with the Amazon account that registered the Scribe; on software 5.16.2 or higher, restart if the option is still missing. Do not apply this account-email requirement to every sharing method.
Cloud-drive copy is stale Export or upload the notebook again manually and confirm the connected account matches Settings > Your Account. Do not expect a connected drive to update automatically.
Repeated sync-and-convert errors Confirm internet and software, then remove and redownload the notebook before retrying. Do not treat the redownload procedure as a fix for every sync failure.

Checks that prevent a misleading diagnosis

Confirm the Amazon account before comparing devices

Two Scribes can look identical while being registered to different Amazon accounts. Check Settings > Your Account on each device before using the other Scribe as a test. An account mismatch can make a correctly backed-up notebook appear to have disappeared.

Test one small action at a time

Do not change Sync, reconnect a cloud drive and send an email simultaneously. First run a manual cloud sync, then test a separate email share, then test a manual export if needed. Isolating the operation tells you whether the failure concerns backup, sharing or a third-party copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the content type in view

A handwritten page, a typed annotation, a highlight and converted text do not have identical destinations. Record which one is missing before choosing a fix. This prevents spending time repairing an Amazon backup when the actual expectation is unsupported display in a particular Kindle app.

Do not buy accessories as a first remedy

The documented troubleshooting steps do not establish that a new Scribe, stylus, case, cable or other accessory repairs a sync or sharing failure. Resolve the account, connection, Sync-setting, destination and conversion-path questions first.

When to contact Amazon support

Contact Amazon support when the relevant procedure still fails, especially if the same notebook cannot be restored on another Scribe after a manual sync, or if conversion continues to fail after the documented redownload sequence. The available guidance is general; it cannot inspect your account, device state, network, service availability or exact error message.

Have these details ready so support can route the issue correctly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your Kindle Scribe generation or model.
  • The software version shown on the device.
  • The exact error text, including whether it says sync, convert, share or download.
  • Whether the problem is Amazon cloud backup, an email share, handwriting conversion or a Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote export.
  • Whether the notebook is visible on another Kindle Scribe signed in to the same account.
  • Whether Sync was enabled when the missing notes or edits were created.

Describe the operation that failed rather than saying only “it is not syncing.” That distinction directs support to the correct workflow and avoids repeating unrelated fixes.
