If Kindle pages look cramped, text is cut off, or the type is uncomfortable, start in the book’s Aa or Page Display controls. Increase or reduce font size, try another font or boldness level, widen the margins, change line spacing, switch alignment, and test the other screen orientation. Those changes fix most device-wide readability problems. If the problem affects only one title, check whether that book uses a fixed layout; print-replica books, comics, manga, some children’s books, and some textbooks may preserve a page design instead of reflowing text. A persistent defect in one title should be reported from its book detail page so the publisher can correct the file.
First, identify whether the problem affects every book or only one
The fastest diagnosis is to open two or three different books. A setting problem normally follows you from title to title. A layout limitation or damaged file normally stays with one book.
| What you see | Likely scope | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Every book has very large type, short lines, wide gaps, or narrow margins | Device or app reading preference | Open Aa/Page Display and adjust font, margins, spacing, alignment, or orientation. |
| Only one book ignores font-size or margin changes | Fixed-layout design or title-specific formatting | Check the book’s accessibility information, then report poor formatting if it is still defective. |
| Text is clipped at the edge, overlaps, or is missing in one title | Possible content-file error | Use the book listing’s report-issue path rather than replacing the device. |
| The issue appears only in one app or on one device | Platform-specific controls or rendering behavior | Check that platform’s available display controls and compare the same title elsewhere if possible. |
Amazon’s instructions note that labels and controls vary by Kindle model and platform. The names below describe the current reading-control paths, but your screen may omit options that your hardware or app does not support.

Amazon documents different combinations of font, spacing, brightness, page color, continuous scrolling, margins, alignment, and orientation lock for Android, iPhone and iPad, macOS, PC, and Kindle for Web. Do not assume that a control shown in one app exists in another. The platform-specific list is in Amazon’s accessible reading options for Kindle reading apps.
Adjust the settings that control how much text fits
Change font size gradually
Use the font-size control in the reading menu. If the page is hard to read, increase the size one step at a time. If the page now shows only a few words per line or seems excessively crowded vertically, reduce it one step. A large jump can make a normally formatted page appear “cut off” simply because fewer words fit on each screen.
Some e-readers also let you resize text from the reading toolbar with a pinch gesture where supported. Device-level font-size controls are supported on Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft, according to Amazon’s font-size instructions. These device-level controls are separate from the in-book menu, so an older model may offer only the book’s reading controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Try another font or boldness setting
If letter shapes look thin, uneven, or difficult to distinguish, choose another font from the typeface menu or increase boldness when that option is offered. A heavier weight can improve contrast without making the text dramatically larger. If the control is unavailable, the title may not support that adjustment or may use a fixed page image.
Widen or narrow the margins
Margins determine the usable line width. A very wide margin produces short lines and more page turns; a very narrow margin can make the text block feel crowded and may be uncomfortable to track. Move the margin setting one step toward the opposite direction, then check whether paragraphs form a more natural width.

Change alignment when spacing looks irregular
Full justification stretches words so both edges of a paragraph line up. On short lines, that can create conspicuous gaps. Choose left alignment if it is available and the spaces between words look excessive or inconsistent. Left alignment leaves a ragged right edge but generally keeps normal word spacing.
Adjust line, paragraph, word, or character spacing
Use the spacing controls when lines feel stacked together or when paragraphs are separated by unusually large gaps. Depending on the device or app, you may see separate controls for line spacing, paragraph spacing, word spacing, or character spacing. Reduce a setting that creates excessive white space; increase it if lines touch or the page is difficult to scan. Not every platform exposes every spacing control.

Test portrait and landscape orientation
On a Kindle e-reader, switch between portrait and landscape from the page-display controls if your model supports it. Landscape can make long lines easier to see in books with diagrams or wide tables, while portrait usually gives a more conventional reading width. In supported apps, orientation lock can prevent the screen from changing when you rotate the device; turn the lock off temporarily if you need to test the other orientation.
Use app-only page-display options carefully
Some Kindle apps include continuous scrolling, page-color choices, and brightness controls. Continuous scrolling changes how pages advance but does not repair a malformed book file. A page-color change can improve contrast, yet it will not make a fixed-layout page reflow. Treat each option as a readability aid rather than a fix for clipped content.
Understand reflowable and fixed-layout Kindle books
Reflowable books
A reflowable book separates the text from the physical page shape. The reading system can rearrange words when you change font size, margins, spacing, or orientation. Line breaks and page counts may change as a result. Most ordinary novels and text-heavy nonfiction behave this way.

Fixed-layout books
A fixed-layout book preserves a designed page. Text and images may be positioned like a printed page instead of being rebuilt for your screen. Amazon gives print replica books, comics, manga, some children’s books, and some textbooks as examples. In these titles, the font-size, margin, spacing, or alignment controls may be unavailable or may not change the page image. Increasing the device’s text size cannot force a page that was authored as a fixed design to reflow.
Check the title’s accessibility information
Open the book’s product or detail page and look for its accessibility information, including whether visual adjustments are supported. This information helps distinguish a deliberate fixed design from a title that should respond to reading controls. Amazon explains the labels and visual-adjustment information in its Kindle book accessibility guide.
Do this check when one title behaves differently from the rest of your library. Do not conclude that the e-reader is defective merely because a comic, print replica, or illustrated textbook does not respond like a novel.
What Enhanced Typesetting can and cannot correct
Some Kindle books use Amazon’s Enhanced Typesetting system. Amazon says, “Kindle with Enhanced Typesetting adjusts without customer intervention when the font size is large or the line length is short on the device page, to improve readability by preventing large gaps between words or squished text.” The description appears in Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing’s Enhanced Typesetting and Page Flip documentation.
This is a layout capability, not a guarantee that every title is correctly formatted. A book can support Enhanced Typesetting and still contain a publisher-side error, an image that extends beyond the page, or a fixed-layout section that cannot reflow. If only one title remains visibly broken after you test the available controls, proceed to the reporting step.

Report a book-specific formatting problem
When the same clipping, overlap, or cramped layout appears in one title but not others, the correction may need to happen in the book file. Amazon’s content-quality guidance provides the reporting route; see the Kindle Content Quality guide.
- Open the affected book’s detail or product page in the Kindle store.
- Find the option to report an issue with the book.
- Choose the poor-formatting or formatting-problem path.
- Describe what is cut off or unreadable. Identify the chapter, location, page, or visible text when possible.
- Submit the report and keep the title information available in case the publisher or support team asks for more detail.
Use this route for a title-specific defect, not for a normal fixed-layout limitation. A report gives the publisher a reproducible place to inspect; changing devices cannot repair an error embedded in the source file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Device and app differences that commonly cause confusion
Older e-readers versus newer models
The reading toolbar is available across many Kindle generations, but the available controls are not identical. Amazon’s general instructions cover 6th-generation and later e-readers, while device-level font-size controls are listed for 11th-generation and later e-readers, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft. If a menu item is absent, that can reflect model support rather than a fault.
Reading apps on different operating systems
Android, iOS and macOS, PC, and Kindle for Web can expose different subsets of the app controls. For example, one platform may offer margin and alignment controls while another offers only font size and type. Compare the controls documented for your platform in Amazon’s reading-app accessibility options before treating a missing setting as broken.

Orientation and screen behavior
An e-reader’s physical rotation setting and an app’s orientation lock are different controls. If the page will not rotate, check the app or device lock first. If it rotates unexpectedly, lock the orientation after selecting the view you prefer.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
Follow this order so that each test answers a different question and you do not change several variables at once.
- Test another book. If the second title looks normal, focus on the original book’s format rather than global settings.
- Open Aa/Page Display. Confirm that you are changing the settings for the open book, not only a device-level preference.
- Set a comfortable font size. Make a small increase or decrease and check whether the text reflows.
- Adjust margins. Correct lines that are too short or a text block that feels crowded against the edges.
- Try left alignment. Use it when full justification creates large holes between words.
- Change spacing. Correct line or paragraph density, using only the controls your model or app provides.
- Test orientation. Compare portrait and landscape on supported e-readers, or review orientation lock in the app.
- Check accessibility details. If the title ignores these changes, determine whether it is fixed-layout.
- Report the title. If one reflowable book still clips or overlaps text, submit a poor-formatting report from its detail page.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing only the font size: A narrow margin or full justification can be the real cause of short lines and large gaps.
- Assuming every Kindle book reflows: Fixed-layout titles intentionally preserve page design.
- Blaming the device for one bad title: Compare another book before resetting settings or replacing hardware.
- Expecting app controls on every platform: Kindle apps do not expose an identical menu on Android, Apple devices, desktop computers, and Kindle for Web.
- Using continuous scrolling as a formatting repair: It changes navigation, not the underlying book layout.
- Reporting a normal design as an error: Comics, print replicas, and illustrated books may have limited visual adjustments by design.
When the issue is genuinely hard to read but not technically broken
Readability is personal, so use the controls together rather than searching for one “correct” value. A slightly larger font with narrower margins can preserve a useful line length. A modest boldness increase may be preferable to another font-size jump. Left alignment can be easier to scan when justification creates uneven spaces. Line spacing should separate lines enough to prevent crowding without turning each page into isolated fragments.
Make changes while viewing a representative page that includes normal paragraphs, headings, and any lists or quotations in the book. A setting that looks good on a short paragraph may produce awkward lines in a long one. If the title includes wide tables or illustrations, orientation may matter more than font size, and a fixed-layout section may remain unchanged even when surrounding text reflows.
