Start with the least disruptive checks: turn Bluetooth on, manually select the remembered JBL entry, and make sure another phone is not still connected. If an earbud switches on by itself or charging is unreliable, clean the charging contacts and case pins. Only after those checks fail should you factory-reset the Live Beam 4. The reset works by triple-tapping either earbud, holding on the third tap for more than five seconds, or by using the JBL Headphone app; it erases saved settings and Bluetooth data, so you must pair again.

Choose the right fix for the symptom

“Won’t connect” and “keeps disconnecting” can look identical in a phone’s Bluetooth menu, but the first action is different from a full reset. A remembered device that is simply not linked needs a manual reconnect. An earbud that powers on unexpectedly, enters pairing without you asking, or charges intermittently points you toward the charging contacts. A factory reset is the most disruptive step because it removes the earbuds’ stored settings and Bluetooth relationships.

What you observe First action Why this comes first Data impact
JBL Live Beam 4 appears in the phone’s Bluetooth list but is not connected Turn Bluetooth on and select the remembered JBL entry manually It tests the active connection without changing saved pairing information None
The earbuds may be connected to a different phone or tablet Disconnect them there, or temporarily turn off Bluetooth on that device Another active connection can prevent reconnection from your current source None
An earbud switches on and begins pairing unexpectedly, or charging is inconsistent Clean the earbud contacts and the charging-case pins JBL identifies dirty contacts as a cause of interrupted charging and unintended power-on behavior None, provided the parts are kept dry before closing the case
Simple reconnection and contact cleaning do not solve the problem Perform the Live Series factory reset The reset clears corrupted or stale settings, but it also clears Bluetooth data High: pairings and settings are erased

Before you begin: identify what is actually failing

Watch the sequence rather than relying only on the error message. If the Live Beam 4 is listed as a saved device and connects when you tap it, the pairing record is probably still usable; the issue is an inactive link. If it is listed but another source keeps taking over, investigate that source before changing anything on your phone. If an earbud is warm, wakes up in the case, or repeatedly starts pairing, treat charging-contact behavior as the first suspect. These distinctions prevent an unnecessary reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the earbuds close to the intended source while testing, and test one change at a time. After each step, try a short audio playback. That makes it clear which action changed the behavior and avoids confusing a successful fix with a temporary state change.

1. Reconnect from the source device

Bluetooth pairing and Bluetooth connection are separate states. Pairing creates a remembered relationship between the earbuds and a phone, tablet, or computer. Connection is the active link being used now. A phone can remember the Live Beam 4 while the earbuds are currently idle or linked elsewhere.

  1. Keep the earbuds near the phone, tablet, or computer you want to use.
  2. Open that device’s Bluetooth settings and confirm that Bluetooth is enabled.
  3. Find the remembered JBL entry in the list of saved or previously connected devices.
  4. Tap or click the JBL entry to request a new connection. Do not forget or unpair it yet; those actions remove the remembered relationship and require a new pairing process.
  5. Wait for the operating system to show the device as connected, then play audio briefly to verify the link.

If the entry is not shown at all, this procedure cannot restore it because there is no saved relationship to select. In that case, use the source device’s normal “add new Bluetooth device” flow after the earbuds are ready to pair. The available JBL guidance does not document the Live Beam 4’s exact initial-pairing gesture, so do not assume that a gesture published for another JBL model is guaranteed to work here.

If the entry appears twice, use the one marked saved or previously connected and remove only clearly obsolete duplicates later. Deleting entries before you know which one is active can turn a simple reconnect into a full pairing task.

2. Check for another phone or tablet holding the connection

A second source is a common reason a remembered JBL entry refuses to reconnect. JBL’s general Bluetooth guidance warns that another connected phone may prevent reconnection. This is especially easy to miss if the other device is in a bag, another room, or still has Bluetooth enabled.

  1. Think of every phone, tablet, laptop, or other source that has been paired with the Live Beam 4.
  2. On each nearby device, open Bluetooth settings and look for an active JBL connection.
  3. If one is connected, choose its disconnect option. If you cannot access it quickly, turn Bluetooth off on that device temporarily.
  4. Return to the source you want to use and select the remembered JBL entry manually.
  5. Once the Live Beam 4 connects reliably, restore Bluetooth on the other device and check which source takes the active connection when both are available.

Do not start by deleting every saved Bluetooth entry. Forgetting the earbuds is more disruptive than disconnecting a competing source and can create a second problem: you will have to pair the earbuds again.

For a clean test, leave Bluetooth disabled on the other source until audio has played continuously for a short period. Then re-enable it and observe whether the disconnect returns. That comparison tells you whether an active-source conflict, rather than missing pairing data, is the trigger.

3. Investigate charging contacts when an earbud powers on by itself

Cleaning is relevant when charging is intermittent, one earbud does not appear to charge, or an earbud “switches on and begins the pairing process” while it should be resting in the case. JBL’s cleaning instructions explicitly include the Live Beam 4 and attribute these symptoms to dirt on the true-wireless charging contacts. This is a targeted check, not proof that dirty contacts cause every Bluetooth fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clean the earbud contacts

  1. Remove the earbuds from the case and inspect the small metal contact areas on each earbud. Look for visible residue, lint, or a dull film.
  2. Inspect the matching metal pins or contact points inside the charging case. Make sure no debris prevents an earbud from sitting fully in its recess.
  3. Using a clean cotton swab, gently rub the contact surfaces. JBL’s instructions mention rubbing alcohol for this cleaning task; use only enough to dampen the swab rather than wetting the earbud or flooding the case.
  4. Allow the case interior and the contact areas to become completely dry before putting the earbuds back in and closing the lid.
  5. Seat each earbud in its intended side and check whether charging starts consistently. Leave the case closed long enough to see whether an earbud remains off instead of starting a new pairing attempt.

Do not scrape the contacts with a sharp object or close the case while any liquid remains. The purpose of this step is to restore a dependable electrical connection for charging and the expected off state; it is not a substitute for a reset when saved Bluetooth data is the problem.

A cotton swab and a small amount of rubbing alcohol are the only cleaning supplies identified in JBL’s instructions. They are useful for this narrow contact-cleaning task, not a universal remedy for Bluetooth dropouts. If charging is steady and neither earbud powers on unexpectedly, move on rather than repeatedly cleaning working contacts.

4. Factory-reset the Live Beam 4 only after the simple checks fail

JBL’s Live Series reset procedure explicitly names Live Beam 4. It can be started from either earbud and uses a three-tap-and-hold gesture.

Reset with the earbuds

  1. Take either Live Beam 4 earbud out so you can operate its touch surface.
  2. Tap the earbud three times.
  3. On the third tap, press and hold for more than five seconds.
  4. Release after the hold has exceeded five seconds. JBL says the earbuds will power off and be factory-reset.

The tap count matters: the hold belongs to the third tap, not a separate fourth gesture. If the earbuds do not power off and reset, repeat the sequence deliberately and make sure the third tap becomes the longer press.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset from the JBL Headphone app

If the earbuds are available to the app, open the JBL Headphone app and use this path: Support > Reset to Factory Setting > Reset. Confirm the reset when prompted.

What the reset removes

JBL’s support wording is explicit: “This action will erase all settings and Bluetooth data from the device.” Expect saved preferences and the existing Bluetooth relationship to disappear. A reset is therefore not a harmless reconnect command; reserve it for cases where manual reconnection, checking another source, and cleaning the contacts have not solved the behavior.

Before resetting, note any settings you care about so you can restore them afterward. Also make sure you know which phone or tablet you intend to pair first. The reset itself does not establish a new connection; it only clears the old state and powers the earbuds off.

5. Pair the earbuds again after the reset

After a successful reset, the old phone-side record may still be present even though the earbuds no longer retain the matching data. If the source repeatedly tries the old record and fails, remove the old JBL entry from that source’s Bluetooth settings, then use the device’s normal new-Bluetooth-device flow.

  1. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, or computer you will use.
  2. If the previous JBL entry remains but will not connect, choose the operating system’s forget, remove, or unpair command for that entry.
  3. Start the source device’s add-new-device scan.
  4. Follow the pairing instructions shown by the source device and the JBL Headphone app, if you are using it. The available JBL material does not establish a Live Beam 4-specific initial pairing gesture, so avoid treating a generic JBL gesture as a guaranteed model instruction.
  5. Select the Live Beam 4 when it appears and wait for the source to report that pairing and connection are complete.
  6. Play audio and make a short test call or recording, if relevant, before reconnecting other previously paired devices.

If you reset because another phone was taking the connection, keep Bluetooth disabled on that other source until the first device has completed pairing. This prevents a competing connection from obscuring whether the reset worked.

Once the first source is stable, reconnect additional devices one at a time. If the problem returns immediately after adding a particular source, disconnect that source and repeat the test; this preserves the useful comparison instead of erasing all records again.

When it still disconnects after reconnection or reset

Use the symptom pattern to decide what to check next instead of repeating the reset indefinitely.

It disconnects only when another device is nearby

Return to the competing-device check. Disconnect the Live Beam 4 from the other phone or temporarily turn that phone’s Bluetooth off, then reconnect manually from the intended source. If the behavior stops, the issue was an active-source conflict rather than missing pairing data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It disconnects after an earbud was placed in the case

Inspect and clean the charging contacts again. A poor contact can prevent the earbud from charging or leave it powered on, which can make it appear to disconnect and then begin pairing. Confirm that the case interior is fully dry and that each earbud is seated correctly.

The phone remembers the earbuds but cannot reconnect after a reset

Remove the stale phone-side Bluetooth entry and run the normal add-new-device process. The reset erased the earbuds’ Bluetooth data, so an old saved record may no longer match what the earbuds expect.

The problem continues in every documented scenario

Stop repeating gestures and contact cleaning. Record which source you used, whether another device was nearby, whether charging was intermittent, and whether the reset completed with the power-off behavior described by JBL. Then use JBL’s headphone support resources: its Bluetooth Pairing Guide for connection problems and its Reset Guide for reset questions. Those resources are the appropriate escalation route when the documented steps do not restore a stable link.

When contacting support, describe the exact sequence: whether the JBL entry was remembered, whether manual selection worked, whether another source was connected, whether cleaning changed charging behavior, and whether the three-tap reset powered the earbuds off. This is more useful than reporting only that the earbuds “keep disconnecting.”

What is—and is not—established for Live Beam 4

  • The three-tap procedure, with a hold of more than five seconds on the third tap, is supported by a JBL Live Series article that explicitly includes Live Beam 4.
  • The charging-contact cleaning advice explicitly applies to Live Beam 4 and is most relevant to unreliable charging or an earbud that powers on and starts pairing unexpectedly.
  • The Bluetooth reconnection advice about selecting a remembered entry and checking another connected phone comes from JBL’s general pairing guidance. It is useful for troubleshooting, but it is not a complete, model-specific Live Beam 4 pairing procedure.
  • The available material does not establish the exact first-pairing gesture for Live Beam 4. Follow the current on-screen instructions from your source device or JBL’s current support pages rather than borrowing a gesture from another model.
  • No verified Live Beam 4 firmware version or model-specific firmware cure for repeated disconnections is documented here. Do not install or quote a firmware version unless JBL currently lists it for this model and provides the applicable instructions.

A compact troubleshooting checklist

  1. Turn Bluetooth on at the source device.
  2. Select the remembered JBL entry manually.
  3. Disconnect any other phone or tablet that may still be connected, or temporarily turn off its Bluetooth.
  4. If charging is unreliable or an earbud powers on unexpectedly, clean the earbud contacts and case pins with a cotton swab; JBL’s instructions mention rubbing alcohol and require the case interior to be completely dry before closing.
  5. If those checks fail, triple-tap either earbud and hold on the third tap for more than five seconds, or use Support > Reset to Factory Setting > Reset in the JBL Headphone app.
  6. Forget the old phone-side entry if necessary, then pair the earbuds again using the source device’s normal new-device flow.
  7. If disconnections continue, use JBL’s Bluetooth Pairing Guide and Reset Guide or contact JBL support with the observations you recorded.

Why this order minimizes disruption

Manual reconnection changes only the active link. Disconnecting another source changes no saved data. Contact cleaning addresses a physical charging and power-state symptom without touching Bluetooth records. The factory reset is last because it clears settings and Bluetooth data and forces a new pairing. Following that order gives you the best chance of fixing the Live Beam 4 without creating an avoidable re-pairing task.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my JBL Live Beam 4 appear in Bluetooth but refuse to connect?

Select the remembered JBL entry manually, then check whether another phone, tablet, or computer is already connected. JBL notes that another active source can prevent reconnection. Disconnect that source or temporarily turn off its Bluetooth before trying again.

Why does one Live Beam 4 earbud turn on inside the case?

Inspect and clean the earbud contacts and the matching case pins. JBL says dirty true-wireless charging contacts can interrupt charging or cause an earbud to switch on and begin pairing. Use a cotton swab with the small amount of rubbing alcohol described in JBL’s cleaning guidance, and let the case interior dry completely before closing it.

How do I factory-reset JBL Live Beam 4 earbuds?

Triple-tap either earbud; on the third tap, press and hold for more than five seconds. JBL says the earbuds power off and reset. In the JBL Headphone app, use Support > Reset to Factory Setting > Reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a factory reset delete my Bluetooth pairing?

Yes. JBL states that the reset erases all settings and Bluetooth data. Remove the stale phone-side entry if needed, then use the source device’s normal add-new-Bluetooth-device process to pair again.

Is there a confirmed Live Beam 4 firmware fix for repeated disconnections?

No model-specific firmware version or cure is established in the documented support material. Check JBL’s current support pages for any new advisory rather than installing or quoting an unverified version.

What should I do if the earbuds still disconnect after resetting?

Stop repeating the reset. Note whether another device was nearby, whether charging was intermittent, whether cleaning changed the behavior, and whether the reset completed with the expected power-off. Then consult JBL’s Bluetooth Pairing Guide or Reset Guide and contact JBL support if necessary.

The Bottom Line

Reconnect the remembered JBL entry first and eliminate any competing phone or tablet. If an earbud powers on unexpectedly or charging is unreliable, clean the Live Beam 4 contacts and case pins and dry them completely. Only then use the three-tap, five-second-hold reset or the JBL Headphone app, remembering that it erases Bluetooth data and settings. Pair again afterward; if the disconnect continues, escalate to JBL support with the exact symptoms.
