First identify which connection is failing: the host game’s connection to Jackbox servers, or a player’s browser connection to the game. For a player who cannot join, check the room-code steps and browser settings. If the host game cannot connect or stay connected, restart the game, host device, and router, then check network restrictions. These problems have different fixes.
That distinction matters even when the symptom sounds the same. A wrong or expired room code, a browser that cannot maintain its controller connection, and a host game that has lost contact with Jackbox servers each call for different checks. Start with what is actually on screen, then change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
Start by locating the connection problem
Jackbox play involves two separate connections. The game runs on a host device, such as a computer, console, or supported set-top box, and connects to Jackbox’s servers. Each player uses a browser on a separate device as a controller. A problem on one side can look like a general “Jackbox won’t connect” error, but the first checks differ.
| What you see | Where to start |
|---|---|
| The host game cannot connect to, or stay connected to, Jackbox servers. | Restart the game and host device, reboot the router, and check network restrictions, VPN use, and the host’s connection type. |
| The host game is running, but one player cannot join at Jackbox.tv. | Check the four-letter room code and player-name steps, then troubleshoot that player’s browser and device. |
| The game returns to the lobby and reports trouble reaching game servers. | Treat it as a connectivity problem first. Jackbox distinguishes this message from a game crash. |
| The PC game continues to crash rather than reporting a server-connection error. | That is a separate issue. Jackbox’s PC-crash guidance suggests checking overclocking and graphics drivers. |
A “lag” complaint can mean a slow or unresponsive controller, a disconnect, or a game that returns to the lobby. The guidance below addresses connection and browser problems; it does not establish a universal latency fix or a guaranteed cause for every slowdown.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Use the pattern of the failure as a clue, not as proof of its cause. If the host game is still running normally and only one person cannot join, begin with that person’s controller device. If multiple players lose their controllers at roughly the same time, check whether the host game remains connected and then inspect the network shared by the host and players. If the host itself displays a server error or returns to the lobby, prioritize the host-side steps. These comparisons help you avoid changing router settings to solve a single-device browser problem.
Fix a player’s room-code or browser problem
Enter the code from the host’s screen
- On the player’s device, open Jackbox.tv.
- Enter the four-letter room code displayed on the host game’s screen.
- Enter a player name.
- Press Play.
The host needs a second device to act as a controller; the device running the game is not used to enter answers. Jackbox also says one user may log in per browser per device. If several people are trying to use the same browser on the same device, use a separate device and browser for each player instead.
Read the code directly from the current host screen rather than relying on a code someone remembered or copied from an earlier round. Make sure each letter is entered in the matching order. If the code is rejected, check that the host is still in the game session and that the code on the screen has not changed. Then re-enter it at Jackbox.tv and press Play again. The basic join flow is the same whether the player is beside the host or watching remotely; remote players also need to be able to see the host screen to know the current code and follow the game.
If one person is already connected and another is not, compare the devices rather than changing the room code for everyone. Confirm the second player is using a separate device and browser, and check that the host is still showing the same code. Jackbox’s one-user-per-browser-per-device guidance is especially relevant when people are sharing a phone, tablet, or computer: a second person should not expect to sign in as a separate controller in the same browser session on that device.
Refresh the controller connection and check browser settings
If the host game is active but the controller will not join or remain connected, Jackbox recommends refreshing Jackbox.tv and checking the controller’s browser. Work through these simpler checks before clearing browser data:
- Make sure cookies and JavaScript are enabled.
- Try another browser, preferably one that meets Jackbox’s listed minimum version.
- Temporarily disable ad blocking or browser extensions that could interfere with the page.
- Check whether a VPN is enabled; Jackbox suggests disabling it as a troubleshooting test.
- If the issue persists, reboot the router and try joining again.
When testing an extension or VPN, treat it as a temporary comparison: refresh the page and see whether the same join attempt behaves differently. If it does not, restore your usual settings and move to the next check. Turning off an extension or VPN is not a general requirement for playing, and a failed test does not by itself identify the cause. Likewise, if another browser works, that points toward a browser-specific setting or compatibility issue rather than proving that the host game or room code is faulty.
The browser must support cookies, WebSockets, HTML5, and JavaScript. Jackbox Games Support’s browser article, updated October 20, 2025, lists these minimum versions for jackbox.tv:
Recommended Free Tools
| Device type | Browser | Minimum version listed |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | Microsoft Edge | 79+ |
| Desktop | Mozilla Firefox | 75+ |
| Desktop | Google Chrome | 79+ |
| Desktop | Apple Safari | 13.1+ |
| Desktop | Opera | 66+ |
| Mobile | iOS Safari | 13.4+ |
| Mobile | Android Browser | 101+ |
| Mobile | Android Chrome | 101+ |
These are the minimums in Jackbox’s published list, not a guarantee that every device or browser configuration will work. Browser support can change, so consult Jackbox’s current supported-browser information if your version is close to the stated minimum.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
The list also separates desktop and mobile browser versions, so compare the right row for the device you are using. A supported version number alone is not the only requirement: cookies, WebSockets, HTML5, and JavaScript must also be available to the page. If the browser is older than the listed minimum, try updating it or using another supported browser before changing the host’s network configuration. If the version is close to the threshold, Jackbox’s current supported-browser page is the better place to confirm whether the published list has changed.
Clear cache or cookies only after the other checks
Jackbox provides device- and browser-specific instructions for clearing cache and cookies, but this is a later troubleshooting step—not the first one. Do not clear browser data while a game is in progress: Jackbox warns that doing so may prevent the player from rejoining that session. If you need to try it, wait until the current game has ended, follow the instructions for your particular browser and device, then return to Jackbox.tv and enter the room code again.
Before clearing anything, try refreshing Jackbox.tv, checking the code, changing browsers, and reviewing cookies, JavaScript, extensions, and VPN use. Clearing data is more disruptive because it can remove information the active controller session needs. If you are in the middle of a game, leave this step until the session is over rather than risking a controller that cannot rejoin. Jackbox’s mobile cache guide, dated July 14, 2023, gives device- and browser-specific directions; follow the instructions that match the browser and operating system you actually use.
Fix a host game that cannot reach Jackbox servers
If the game running on the host device cannot connect or keeps losing its server connection, start with restarts before changing firewall or router settings. Jackbox’s server-connection guidance is dated January 3, 2024.
- Close and reopen the game. Start it again and see whether the server connection returns.
- Restart the host device. This means the computer, console, or set-top box running the game.
- Reboot the router. After it has restarted, try the game again.
- Check for network blocking. On a computer, review whether the firewall or antivirus software is blocking the game’s connection.
- Test without a VPN. Temporarily disable the VPN and retry. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent security recommendation.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, if possible. Jackbox suggests switching between them. A wired test only applies if the host device supports Ethernet directly or through a suitable adapter.
For a useful comparison, keep the game and other conditions the same while you test one connection type at a time. If the host is on Wi-Fi, try Ethernet only if the host has an Ethernet port or a suitable adapter; if the host cannot use a wired connection, skip that test. A cable is an optional, modest purchase for this comparison, not a guaranteed fix. It will not address a browser setting, an incorrect room code, a blocked server connection, or a problem elsewhere in the internet connection.
Check firewall or antivirus rules only after the simpler restarts. On a computer, security software may block a game’s network access, but changing a rule should be limited to the relevant game and done according to the software’s documentation. Do not turn off security protection permanently just to test a connection. If you do not manage the computer or network yourself, ask its administrator to review the restriction rather than making broad changes.
If only one player’s controller is failing while the host remains connected, focus on that player’s browser rather than changing the host’s firewall or ports. Conversely, if the host game itself cannot reach the servers, changing one controller’s browser will not address the host-side failure.
Check ports only when the game edition matches Jackbox’s guidance
Port advice depends on the game generation. Do not apply a port list to every Jackbox title by default. Jackbox’s January 3, 2024 server-connection article gives the following scope:
Rank #3

| Game edition covered | Ports listed by Jackbox | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Games before Party Pack 7 | 80, 443, 843, 38202, and 38203 | These are the ports Jackbox lists for games before Party Pack 7. |
| Party Pack 7, 8, 9, and 10 | 80 and 443 | Jackbox says these packs do not use the high-numbered ports and use 80 and 443 if the game is affected. |
| Titles later than Party Pack 10 | Not established by that article | Do not infer their requirements from the older list; check the support guidance for the specific title. |
Before changing router or firewall settings, confirm the exact game or Party Pack. If you are unsure how to make a network rule safely, consult the router or firewall documentation or its administrator rather than opening ports indiscriminately.
In practical terms, first identify the game edition you launched, then compare it with the scope in Jackbox’s article. The older list includes ports 843, 38202, and 38203 in addition to 80 and 443; the listed Party Pack 7 through 10 guidance does not use those high-numbered ports. Do not assume that the older list applies to a newer pack, or that the Party Pack 7–10 statement automatically covers titles released after Party Pack 10. The article does not establish requirements for every later title.
Port changes are a later and more technical step, not a routine first fix for a controller that cannot enter a room. Confirm that the host game is the part losing its server connection and try the restart, VPN, and connection-type checks first. If a port rule is appropriate, follow the router or firewall maker’s instructions and keep the rule limited to the stated ports and relevant game. Opening a broad range of ports without confirming the edition can introduce unnecessary network exposure and still fail to solve the actual issue.

A game that returns to the lobby with an error about reaching game servers is reporting a connectivity problem, according to Jackbox’s troubleshooting guidance. That is different from a game process that crashes or closes. If the PC game continues to crash, Jackbox’s separate setup and crash guidance suggests checking for overclocking and updating graphics drivers; those steps do not substitute for the network checks when the error is specifically about reaching game servers.
Use the exact behavior to choose the path. A visible server-reachability error or a return to the lobby points to the connection checks in this guide. A game that closes unexpectedly or repeatedly crashes on a PC calls for the separate crash checks instead. Jackbox’s setup/crash article is dated July 14, 2023. The guidance cited here does not say that updating a graphics driver will fix a room-code rejection or a controller browser that cannot connect, so keep the diagnosis focused on the symptom you actually have.
When players are remote
Remote players need a way to see the host’s game screen as well as a device to use as a controller. Jackbox notes that a remote screen-sharing service can provide a view of the host screen. That viewing arrangement is separate from entering the code at Jackbox.tv: players still use the displayed four-letter code and a controller device. The support guidance cited here does not establish a particular screen-sharing service or a specific network-speed requirement.
For a remote game, think of seeing the host screen and connecting a controller as two separate needs. A screen-sharing service can let distant players see the game, but it does not replace Jackbox.tv or make the player’s phone or computer the host. The host still runs the game, shows the room code, and uses one device; each player enters that code in a browser on a controller device. If a remote player can see the host screen but cannot join, follow the browser and code checks. If the host game cannot reach servers, work through the host-side connection steps regardless of how the screen is shared.

- Only one player cannot join: re-enter the host’s four-letter code at Jackbox.tv, check the player name, refresh, and test browser settings or another supported browser.
- Several controllers fail while the host game runs: check cookies, JavaScript, browser extensions, VPN use, and the router connection; avoid clearing data during an active game.
- The host game cannot connect or stay connected: restart the game and host device, reboot the router, test VPN and network restrictions, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if available.
- You are considering port changes: identify the exact game edition and follow only the port guidance Jackbox gives for that generation.
- The game returns to the lobby with a server error: troubleshoot connectivity. If the PC game actually crashes, use the separate crash checks instead.
Keep the troubleshooting order low-risk: verify the symptom, refresh or restart, check the relevant device and browser, then move to network settings. A room-code problem does not justify opening router ports. A host server error is unlikely to be solved by clearing a player’s browser cookies. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to see whether the issue is fixed and to undo a test that made no difference.
