If your iPhone lost cellular data, calling, or texting after a carrier-related prompt, first identify which service actually failed. A carrier settings update and the separate “Cellular Settings Updated” modem notice are not the same thing, and the notice alone does not change your plan or require a reset.
Use the sequence below: check the network state, refresh the connection, verify the affected line and service-specific settings, inspect the SIM or eSIM, then have the carrier check provisioning and outages. Leave Reset Network Settings until the end because it removes saved Wi-Fi, VPN, APN, and cellular settings.
First, identify which update you saw
Carrier settings update
A carrier settings update is delivered by your mobile provider. It can update network-related settings, improve cellular connectivity and performance, and add features such as 5G or Wi-Fi Calling. A newly installed SIM or eSIM may also need the settings for that provider.
If you dismissed the prompt, connect to Wi-Fi or a cellular network and open Settings > General > About. Wait briefly on the About screen. If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions. The exact labels and available features depend on the carrier, iPhone model, iOS version, and country or region.

“Cellular Settings Updated” notice
Apple uses this wording for an automatic update to the iPhone’s cellular modem configuration. Those configurations help the modem connect to 2G, 3G, 4G/LTE, and 5G networks. Apple says this modem update does not change your data plan or carrier settings and requires no action: “There is no action required by you.”
Do not keep reinstalling a modem update, delete an eSIM, or assume that the notice invalidated your plan. If service is unavailable, troubleshoot the symptom and ask the carrier to check the account and network.
Match the symptom to the right troubleshooting path
Use the status indicator, the affected line, and the type of communication that fails. Data, voice calls, SMS, iMessage, RCS, and MMS do not all use the same network path.
| What you observe | What it usually tells you to check first | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| SOS, No Service, or Searching | Refresh the radio connection, restart, check iOS and carrier settings, then check SIM/eSIM and carrier status. | The carrier prompt itself caused the outage. |
| Cellular data fails but calls work | Cellular Data switch, selected data line, per-app cellular permission, roaming status, and carrier data provisioning. | Changing a network mode is a universal fix. |
| Calls fail or cannot be received | Carrier account, outage, billing block, supported features, line selection, and software or carrier settings. | Disabling voice features will work on every model or network. |
| SMS fails while other messages work | Cellular connection, intended phone line, Wi-Fi Calling support, and carrier SMS provisioning. | Green or blue bubbles prove the update caused the problem. |
| Physical SIM or eSIM is missing | Line enabled status, SIM seating or damage, and carrier provisioning. | Deleting the eSIM is a safe routine reset. |
Official Apple guidance does not establish one setting change that fixes every post-update failure. The distinctions above prevent you from changing unrelated settings or erasing a working cellular profile.
Restore a connection when the iPhone says SOS, No Service, or Searching
Apple defines No Service and Searching as the iPhone not being connected to a cellular network. SOS indicates that normal carrier service is unavailable even though emergency-service access may still be possible, depending on local conditions.

- Refresh the radio connection. Open Control Center or Settings, turn Airplane Mode on, leave it on for at least 15 seconds, and turn it off. Give the phone a moment to re-register.
- Restart the iPhone. Use the normal power-off and power-on procedure for your model. A restart is less disruptive than resetting network settings and can clear a temporary registration failure.
- Install an available iOS update. Open Settings > General > Software Update. Keep the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi if the update is large, and allow the installation to finish before judging cellular behavior.
- Check for a carrier settings prompt. Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular service, then open Settings > General > About. Accept a carrier update only if the iPhone presents one.
- Check the line and SIM/eSIM. On a Dual SIM iPhone, confirm that the intended line is present and turned on. Continue with the SIM/eSIM checks below if a line is absent or inactive.
- Run additional diagnostics when available. On iOS 18 or later, the Apple Support app may offer cellular diagnostics on supported iPhone models. Availability varies, and diagnostics do not identify every possible account, coverage, or hardware cause.
Move to the carrier escalation section if the phone remains in SOS, No Service, or Searching after these checks. Coverage, a local outage, an account block, an unprovisioned line, a device block, or a damaged radio cannot be repaired from an iPhone setting.
Fix cellular data when calls or signal still work
Confirm the data switch and selected line
Open Settings > Cellular and make sure Cellular Data is on. With Dual SIM, tap Cellular Data and select the line that has the data plan. Also verify that that line is enabled under the cellular plans list.
iOS can control cellular access separately for each app or service. In Settings > Cellular, scroll through the app list and turn on access for any app that cannot connect away from Wi-Fi. If only one app fails, this per-app permission is a more relevant check than reinstalling the carrier profile.
Check roaming only when your situation requires it
If you are outside your carrier’s normal coverage region, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and review Data Roaming. Roaming may be required for data on another provider’s network, but it can incur charges depending on your plan. Confirm the carrier’s roaming terms before enabling it, especially when traveling internationally.
Do not guess at APN values
Some carriers expose Access Point Name (APN) controls; others hide them. If the APN fields are visible, do not copy values from an unofficial list. Apple warns that an incorrect APN can interrupt data connectivity or result in charges. Change APN information only when directed by your carrier or a device administrator, using the exact values they provide.

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
Use a controlled test
Turn Wi-Fi off temporarily and test a known-working website or app, then turn Wi-Fi back on. This separates a cellular data problem from a Wi-Fi problem. Test more than one app so that a single service outage is not mistaken for an iPhone-wide data failure.

Call failures require both iPhone-side and carrier-side checks. Start with the connection steps above, then confirm that the iPhone has current iOS and carrier settings. Review the phone settings relevant to your model and region, but do not treat a particular network mode or voice toggle as universal: available controls depend on the iPhone, carrier, and location.
Ask the carrier to verify the account
The carrier should confirm all of the following:
- The account and specific line are set up to use the iPhone.
- There is no local outage or coverage problem at your location.
- A billing issue, suspension, device bar, or fraud-prevention block is not stopping calls.
- The plan supports the voice features and network technology available in your area.
- The carrier’s network is not rejecting calls because of a provisioning or switching error.
Give the representative the iPhone model, iOS version, carrier settings version shown in Settings > General > About, affected phone line, location, approximate time the problem began, and whether data and SMS fail separately. This information helps the carrier investigate, although each provider may use different diagnostic labels.
Fix SMS, iMessage, RCS, and MMS separately
Identify the message type
Message color is not a diagnosis. iMessage uses Wi-Fi or cellular data. RCS and MMS also need Wi-Fi or cellular data. Traditional SMS needs a cellular network connection; when Wi-Fi Calling is enabled and supported, SMS may be sent over Wi-Fi.
Determine whether the failure affects one contact or every recipient, and whether the message is SMS, iMessage, RCS, or MMS. A data outage can stop iMessage, RCS, and MMS while SMS remains available; a cellular registration or SMS provisioning problem can do the opposite.

Check the line and Messages settings
In Settings > Cellular, verify that the intended phone line is present and enabled. If you use more than one line, make sure the line associated with the number is selected for messaging. Review Settings > Messages when the problem is limited to iMessage or related options, and test again after confirming the phone has a cellular or Wi-Fi data connection.
Escalate persistent carrier messaging failures
Apple directs users with ongoing SMS, MMS, or RCS problems to the carrier. Ask whether the provider supports the affected message type on your plan and line, whether messaging is provisioned correctly, and whether there is a network-side block. Do not infer causation solely from the timing of the carrier prompt.
Check a physical SIM or eSIM without deleting service
Dual SIM and eSIM checks
Open Settings > Cellular and verify that every expected plan appears and is turned on. If the cellular data line is missing, or an eSIM still needs setup, the carrier must provision it. Follow the provider’s activation process rather than trying to create a replacement profile from an unrelated source.
Do not delete an eSIM as a routine troubleshooting step. Apple’s reset guidance warns that deleting stored eSIMs means you must set up cellular service again. Unless the carrier explicitly instructs you and can immediately reprovision the line, leave the eSIM installed.

Remove and inspect a physical nano-SIM
If the iPhone does not recognize a physical SIM, power or follow the model’s SIM-tray guidance, remove the card, and reinsert it carefully. Check the card and tray for damage, dirt, or corrosion, and ensure the card fits the tray correctly. A SIM ejector tool is only a convenience for opening the tray; it does not repair a failed line or replace carrier provisioning.

If the card is damaged, does not fit, or was transferred from another device and is not recognized, contact the carrier for a replacement. Do not sand, cut, or modify the card.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When and how to contact the carrier
The carrier is the authority for account status, plan provisioning, local outages and coverage, device bars or blocks, billing restrictions, SIM or eSIM activation, supported messaging, and carrier-system call errors. Contact it after the safe connection and settings checks, or immediately if the line is missing, the account may be suspended, or the area has an outage.
Prepare this report:
- iPhone model and whether it uses a physical SIM, eSIM, or Dual SIM.
- iOS version and the carrier settings version displayed in Settings > General > About.
- The affected phone number or line and your current location.
- Approximate onset and whether it followed a prompt, restart, SIM change, or travel.
- Exact network indicator: connected, SOS, No Service, or Searching.
- Which services fail independently: cellular data, incoming calls, outgoing calls, SMS, iMessage, RCS, or MMS.
- What you already tried, including Airplane Mode, restart, software updates, and SIM checks.
Ask the carrier to refresh or reprovision the line only after it verifies the account and plan. Follow its instructions for a replacement SIM or eSIM activation. If the carrier confirms that the account, coverage, and network are working but the iPhone still cannot register, Apple service may be appropriate because hardware could be involved.

Use Reset Network Settings only after simpler fixes fail
Resetting network settings is not a guaranteed carrier-update fix. Apple recommends reserving it for cases where other solutions have failed because it removes configuration you may need to restore.
What the reset removes
- Saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords.
- Cellular settings.
- VPN settings.
- APN settings.
Afterward, the iPhone must reconnect to Wi-Fi networks manually. A workplace, school, or other managed device may also need an administrator to restore certain settings.
How to run it
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Choose Reset Network Settings.
- Enter the device passcode if asked and confirm.
- After the restart, reconnect to Wi-Fi, verify the cellular line, and test data, calls, and messages separately.
This reset does not erase your photos, apps, or personal files, but it does erase the network credentials and profiles listed above. If the carrier has not checked provisioning or an outage, perform that check before resetting.
Common mistakes that make the problem harder
- Blaming the notice automatically: “Cellular Settings Updated” is a modem configuration notice, not proof that the plan or carrier settings changed incorrectly.
- Repeating the same update: A modem notice needs no action, and a carrier settings prompt should be accepted once when presented.
- Changing APN values from a random website: An incorrect value can stop data or create charges.
- Turning on roaming without checking the plan: Roaming can cost extra.
- Deleting an eSIM: You may need the carrier to set up the line again.
- Resetting before recording the setup: Network reset removes Wi-Fi passwords and VPN/APN settings you may need.
- Testing only one message color: SMS, iMessage, RCS, and MMS have different requirements.
- Changing network mode as a universal remedy: Options differ by carrier, model, and region.
How to decide whether the issue is the iPhone or the carrier
A failure confined to one app, one message type, or one line points to a narrower setting or provisioning check. SOS, No Service, or Searching across locations points toward registration, coverage, SIM/eSIM, account, or hardware. A problem that follows the line to another compatible phone suggests the carrier account or SIM; a problem that stays with the iPhone after the carrier verifies the line raises the possibility of device hardware. These observations guide the next question, but they do not replace the carrier’s account and network checks.
Recommended Free Tools
On iOS 18 or later, use the Apple Support app’s available diagnostics as an additional data point on supported models. If the carrier has ruled out account, coverage, and provisioning problems and diagnostics or repeated tests still show failure, arrange Apple service rather than repeatedly changing cellular settings.
