After a carrier switch, an iPhone that will not activate usually has one of four causes: Apple’s activation service or your internet connection, a carrier lock, an unsupported or incorrectly provisioned SIM/eSIM, or invalid activation information. The exact alert determines the fastest fix. Check the error first, then work through Apple’s connection steps, verify Carrier Lock, and use the SIM or eSIM method your new carrier supports. Apple can help with device-side activation and recovery, but only the previous/current carrier can remove a carrier lock and only the new carrier can provision your line.
Do not assume that every activation failure means the phone, SIM, or account is defective. A server message can clear after a short wait, while a lock or missing eSIM assignment will not change until a carrier updates the account. The sequence below separates those cases so you do not spend time repeating the wrong fix.
Identify what actually failed
Before changing settings, record the exact wording on screen. Also decide whether the iPhone itself is stuck in setup or whether setup finished but the new line has no cellular service. Those are different problems: device activation is handled through Apple’s activation process, while a rejected SIM, missing eSIM assignment, or unactivated line is controlled by a carrier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| “The activation server is temporarily unavailable” or “cannot be reached” | Temporary Apple activation-service outage or an unreliable connection | Retry on a reliable connection; Apple’s activation guidance also provides a computer method |
| “SIM not supported,” “incompatible SIM,” or “invalid SIM/eSIM” | Carrier compatibility or line-provisioning problem | Contact the new carrier |
| Carrier Lock does not say “No SIM restrictions” | The iPhone remains locked to its previous carrier | Contact the current/previous carrier for an unlock |
| “Invalid activation information” | Activation data that may require device recovery | Follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions |
Apple’s detailed troubleshooting for these messages is in If you can’t activate your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular), published March 31, 2025. Keep a note of whether the message appeared before or after you inserted a SIM or downloaded an eSIM. That timing helps support distinguish a device activation problem from a line-provisioning problem.

Fix a temporary activation-server or connectivity failure
If the alert says the activation server is unavailable or cannot be reached, do not replace the SIM immediately. Apple says to wait a few minutes and repeat the activation attempt. A short-lived service interruption or a connection that drops during setup can produce this message even when your account is correct.
- Check Apple’s System Status page. Look for the iOS Device Activation service. If it is unavailable, leave the iPhone connected and retry after the service returns.
- Restart the iPhone. A restart clears a failed activation attempt and starts a fresh connection.
- Use reliable Wi-Fi. Move to a stable private network rather than a weak or congested connection. Keep the iPhone connected while retrying.
- Wait a few minutes, then try again. Apple’s published instruction is to repeat the previous activation steps after waiting when the server is temporarily unavailable.
Do not repeatedly erase the phone or guess at cellular settings while the service is unavailable. Those actions do not make an unavailable activation server respond. If the status page shows an outage, waiting is the appropriate first response. If the status is available, complete the restart, Wi-Fi, and retry sequence once more before moving to computer activation.
If the iPhone still will not activate, Apple recommends using a computer with current macOS or current iTunes and an internet connection.
Activate with a Mac or Windows PC
- Install available updates so the Mac is running current macOS or the PC has a current version of iTunes.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a cable and open Finder on a Mac or iTunes on a Windows PC.
- Follow the on-screen activation prompts and keep the computer online until the process completes.
Use the computer method as an alternative activation route, not as a way to bypass a carrier restriction. The computer can communicate with Apple’s activation service, but it cannot unlock a phone or assign a cellular plan that the carrier has not provisioned.
If the computer reports an incompatible or invalid SIM/eSIM, stop treating the problem as an Apple server outage and contact the carrier. If it reports invalid activation information, use Apple’s recovery-mode procedure from the same support article rather than repeatedly guessing at SIM settings.
Check whether the iPhone is carrier-locked
A new SIM cannot work normally on a locked iPhone until the carrier lock is removed. Check the status before assuming the replacement SIM is defective:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Scroll to Carrier Lock.
No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked. Any other status means you need the carrier that currently controls the lock to process or confirm an unlock. Apple cannot remove it. Apple states: “Apple can’t unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier. Only your current carrier can unlock your iPhone.” Its support page, published January 22, 2026, also notes that an approved unlock may take a few days to complete. See How to unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier.

Ask the previous carrier to confirm both that the request was approved and that the unlock has finished. Until Carrier Lock shows No SIM restrictions, troubleshooting the new carrier’s SIM cannot solve the lock itself. If the carrier says the request is complete but the status has not changed, ask when the change should propagate and whether it needs the iPhone online for the update. Do not treat a successful Wi-Fi connection as proof that the cellular lock is gone; Wi-Fi does not test carrier authorization.
Transfer or activate an eSIM correctly
There is no single universal eSIM transfer process. The new carrier may provide eSIM Quick Transfer, carrier activation pushed directly to the iPhone, a QR code, a web link, an app, manual activation details, or assistance from its support team. Use the method the carrier actually supplied instead of trying a different method at random. A QR code or activation link can be single-use, so ask the carrier for a replacement rather than repeatedly scanning a code that was already consumed.
eSIM Quick Transfer between iPhones
Apple’s current eSIM instructions say Quick Transfer requires all of the following:
- Both iPhones are nearby.
- Bluetooth is enabled on both phones.
- Both phones are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Both phones are unlocked with their passcodes available.
- The iPhones are running iOS 18.4 or later.
- The carrier supports eSIM Quick Transfer.
Start the transfer from the cellular setup prompts on the new iPhone and approve the request on the old iPhone. When the new plan activates, the previous SIM is deactivated. That is expected behavior, not evidence that the transfer failed. If the transfer option never appears, the carrier may not support Quick Transfer for that line, or one of the prerequisites may not be met.

If one phone is locked, signed in to a different Apple Account, running an older iOS release, or has Bluetooth disabled, the option may not appear. Even when every device prerequisite is satisfied, the carrier must support Quick Transfer for the particular line and region.
Other carrier-supported eSIM methods
- Carrier activation: The carrier assigns the plan electronically and the iPhone displays a prompt to finish setup.
- QR code: Scan the code supplied by the carrier when prompted to add a cellular plan.
- Carrier link or app: Open the link or the carrier’s app and follow its activation flow.
- Manual details: Enter the SM-DP+ address or other information only when the carrier supplies those values.
- Carrier assistance: Ask support to assign or reissue the eSIM if no profile was delivered.
Transfers from a non-Apple phone may require direct carrier assistance rather than Quick Transfer. Apple’s current instructions, published September 17, 2026, cover these methods in Set up eSIM on iPhone. Carrier support and local availability vary by country and region, so the carrier must confirm which option applies to your line. Device cellular options also differ by country: an iPhone sold without a physical SIM tray cannot be made to accept one, even if another regional version of the same model has a tray.
Use the physical-SIM path when your iPhone supports it
Physical SIM support depends on the iPhone model and the country or region where it was sold. Some models do not have a SIM tray, so check the device before looking for one. If there is a tray, Apple’s procedure is:

- Locate the SIM tray on the iPhone’s edge.
- Insert a paper clip or SIM eject tool into the tray’s small hole and press gently to open it.
- Place the new nano-SIM in the tray, matching the cut corner and contacts to the tray’s shape.
- Slide the tray fully back into the phone and wait for the line to register.
A paper clip is sufficient; an eject tool is optional. Do not force the tray or place a SIM in a model that has no physical tray. If the card does not sit flat, remove it and check its orientation rather than pressing the tray closed. Tell the carrier whether the phone has a tray when requesting a replacement, because the carrier may need to issue a physical SIM or an eSIM instead.

Never guess a SIM PIN
If the phone asks for a SIM PIN, use the PIN supplied by the carrier or the one you previously set. Apple warns that an incorrect guess can permanently lock the SIM. Stop after an unknown PIN attempt and ask the carrier for the correct code or an unlock code. Apple’s physical-SIM guidance is in the iPhone User Guide: Set up cellular service on iPhone. A SIM PIN prompt is different from the iPhone’s device passcode and from the carrier-lock status; entering the device passcode will not unlock the SIM.
Match the error to the right carrier action
“SIM not supported” or “incompatible/invalid SIM”
These messages point to the new carrier’s SIM or eSIM being unacceptable to the device or not correctly assigned to the line. Confirm that the carrier issued the profile or SIM for this exact iPhone and that the phone is unlocked. Then ask the new carrier to check compatibility and provisioning. If you used a physical SIM, tell support whether the iPhone has a tray and whether the card is seated correctly. If you used an eSIM, request a fresh assignment or QR code when the original profile was never delivered or has already been used.
Apple’s computer activation guidance treats an incompatible or invalid SIM/eSIM result as a carrier matter. The carrier may need to verify the iPhone model, the region in which it was sold, the line’s SIM identifier, and whether the account is ready for activation. A replacement profile is useful only when the carrier provisions it; downloading another profile without that account change will not fix the rejection.
The phone activates, but the new line has no service
When setup completes but the cellular line is missing or unusable, treat it as a line-provisioning case rather than repeating device activation. Contact the new carrier and ask it to verify that the number, SIM/eSIM identifier, and plan are attached to the account. The carrier also needs to confirm local eSIM availability and support for the iPhone model and region.
This symptom can occur after an eSIM transfer appears to finish but the new plan was not assigned correctly. Tell support whether the old SIM was deactivated, whether the new line appears under cellular settings, and whether the phone shows a carrier name or only emergency service. Those details help the carrier locate the incomplete assignment without confusing it with an Apple activation outage.
The activation server still cannot be reached
Return to the Apple-side sequence: check iOS Device Activation status, restart, use reliable Wi-Fi, wait briefly, and retry. If that does not work, use a computer with current macOS or iTunes. A computer-side invalid activation-information message calls for recovery mode; an invalid SIM/eSIM message calls for the carrier instead.

Carrier Lock is not “No SIM restrictions”
Only the current carrier can unlock the phone. Ask it to confirm eligibility, submit or complete the unlock, and tell you when the change has propagated. Apple cannot override that account-level restriction. Once the status changes to No SIM restrictions, retry the new carrier’s supported SIM or eSIM activation method; if it still fails, give the new carrier the updated status and exact error.
What to tell support so the issue is resolved faster
Activation cases often stall when support receives only “my phone won’t work.” Prepare the following details before calling or chatting:

- For an eSIM, which method you attempted: Quick Transfer, carrier activation, QR code, link, app, manual details, or carrier-assisted transfer.
- Whether you tried reliable Wi-Fi and, if applicable, computer activation.
Contact the previous/current carrier for an unlock confirmation. Contact the new carrier for a rejected SIM or eSIM, a missing eSIM assignment, a replacement QR code, or a line that was never provisioned. These account and network actions cannot be completed from iPhone settings. If support asks you to repeat a step, tell it which path you already tried and what changed; that prevents an already-consumed eSIM code or an unresolved lock from being mistaken for a new failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision path
- Read the alert. Separate activation-server wording, invalid activation information, SIM rejection, and a lock status.
- For an activation-server message, check Apple’s iOS Device Activation status, restart, connect to reliable Wi-Fi, wait a few minutes, and retry.
- If it still fails, activate through a computer with current macOS or iTunes.
- For invalid activation information, follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions.
- For a SIM/eSIM rejection or no assigned line, contact the new carrier with the exact message and device details.
- For a lock, verify Carrier Lock and ask the previous/current carrier to unlock the iPhone.
- For eSIM Quick Transfer, verify proximity, Bluetooth, the same Apple Account, passcodes, iOS 18.4 or later, and carrier support before retrying.
- For a physical SIM, confirm the model has a tray, reseat the card, and never guess the SIM PIN.
This order matters because it assigns each symptom to the party that can actually change it. Apple-side retries are appropriate for an activation-server message, the current carrier owns the lock, and the new carrier owns SIM acceptance and line provisioning. A paper clip or SIM eject tool can open a tray, but no accessory or software utility can replace those account actions.
When to stop troubleshooting on the iPhone
Escalate once the evidence identifies a carrier-controlled issue. An iPhone setting cannot remove a carrier lock, create a missing eSIM assignment, approve a rejected SIM, or complete line provisioning. Give the carrier the exact error, model, SIM type, and Carrier Lock result so it can act on the correct account record. If Apple’s activation service is available, reliable Wi-Fi and computer activation both fail, and the phone reports invalid activation information, use Apple’s recovery guidance rather than cycling through SIM replacements.
Carrier and regional support are not uniform. The availability of Quick Transfer, physical SIMs, QR codes, and particular iPhone cellular features depends on the carrier, model, and country or region. Confirm those details directly with the carrier instead of assuming that a method available on another iPhone or in another country will work on yours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my iPhone activate after I switch carriers?
Read the exact alert first. An activation-server message calls for an Apple System Status check, restart, reliable Wi-Fi, a short wait, and possibly computer activation. “SIM not supported” or missing service points to the new carrier. A Carrier Lock status other than “No SIM restrictions” means the previous/current carrier must unlock the phone.

How do I check whether my iPhone is unlocked?
Open Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. Any other status must be addressed by the carrier that controls the lock; Apple cannot remove it.
Why does eSIM Quick Transfer not appear?
Quick Transfer requires nearby iPhones with Bluetooth enabled, the same Apple Account, passcodes available, iOS 18.4 or later, and carrier support. If any prerequisite is missing—or the carrier does not offer Quick Transfer for your line—use the carrier’s QR code, link, app, activation prompt, manual details, or support-assisted method.
What should I do if my iPhone says SIM not supported?
Confirm the phone is unlocked, then contact the new carrier. Ask it to verify the iPhone model and region, the physical SIM or eSIM identifier, and line provisioning. For an eSIM, request a new assignment or QR code if the profile was never delivered or has already been used.
Can Apple unlock my iPhone for a new carrier?
No. Apple says only the current carrier can unlock an iPhone. Ask that carrier to process or confirm the unlock, and allow the stated processing time; retry the new carrier activation only after Carrier Lock shows “No SIM restrictions.”
Is a SIM eject tool required?
No. If your model has a physical SIM tray, Apple’s instructions allow a paper clip or an optional SIM eject tool. Do not force the tray, and never guess a SIM PIN because an incorrect guess can permanently lock the SIM.
The Bottom Line
Match the message to the owner: Apple handles temporary activation-service failures and recovery, the current carrier handles Carrier Lock, and the new carrier handles SIM/eSIM acceptance and line provisioning. Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock, use the carrier-supported eSIM or physical-SIM path, and escalate with the exact error and device details when the issue is account-controlled.
