Star Citizen’s Installer Error can be caused by a damaged data.p4k file, an incorrect game-library path, blocked network traffic, Windows permissions, insufficient storage, or—on some Windows 11 systems—a drive sector-size problem. The correct fix depends on the message or error code shown by the RSI Launcher.
Start with the non-destructive checks below. Do not delete the entire game installation unless file verification and the targeted repairs fail.
Before troubleshooting: check the installation basics
Star Citizen currently requires at least 100 GB of free space, an SSD, and an NTFS-formatted drive. Leave additional free space for updates and temporary files. The launcher does not always detect insufficient space before starting an installation, so low storage can appear as an incomplete install, failed update, or failed verification.
Also install all pending Windows updates. RSI lists .NET Framework 3.5, .NET Framework 4.5.2, and fully updated Windows as prerequisites. Windows N and KN editions also need the latest Windows Media Feature Pack.

1. Fully close the RSI Launcher
Clicking the launcher’s X may only minimize it to the Windows system tray. A second launcher process can then keep data.p4k locked while you try to repair it.
- Look in the notification area near the Windows clock.
- Right-click the RSI Launcher icon and choose Quit.
- If it is not there, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- End any remaining RSI Launcher processes. Confirm that they have disappeared before changing game files.
To make the X exit the launcher in future, open RSI logo > Settings and enable Enable close-to-quit.
2. Check the game-library path
If the files are on the drive but the launcher says the game is not installed, the configured path may point to the wrong folder. This commonly happens after moving the game to another SSD or changing the drive letter.

- Open the RSI Launcher.
- Click the RSI logo/drop-down in the upper-left corner.
- Select Settings > Games.
- Select the affected channel, such as LIVE, PTU, or EPTU.
- Set Game Library Folder to the folder that actually contains that channel’s files.
- Click Change.
The default LIVE path is:
C:Program FilesRoberts Space IndustriesStarCitizenLIVEThe path must match the real folder. If the launcher is configured for D:GamesStarCitizen but the files are actually in D:GamesStarCitizenLIVE, select the path expected by the launcher and verify that the channel folder is present. A path mismatch makes the launcher treat the game as uninstalled.
3. Verify the Star Citizen files
Verification is the safest first repair for corrupted or incomplete files.
- Open RSI logo > Settings > Games.
- Select the affected channel.
- Confirm that Game Library Folder points to the correct installation.
- Click VERIFY.
- Allow the process to finish, even if it redownloads or reinstalls files.
Do not close the launcher during verification. A brief network interruption, antivirus scan, or interrupted download can leave the installation incomplete.
4. Repair a failed data.p4k download
The data.p4k file is large and is a frequent point of failure when an installation is interrupted. RSI documents two closely related repair methods.

Method A: rename the file
- Close the launcher completely and check Task Manager to confirm that its process has ended.
- Open the affected channel folder, for example
StarCitizenLIVE. - Rename
data.p4ktodata.p4k.part. - Start the RSI Launcher by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Click Install. The launcher should restart installation or begin verification.
Method B: delete the file on Windows 11
- Close the launcher completely.
- Delete
data.p4kfrom the affected channel folder. - Empty the Recycle Bin. Because the file is large, deleting it without emptying the bin may not reclaim the required storage.
- Restart the RSI Launcher.
- Open Settings > Games and select VERIFY.
If Windows says the file is in use, the launcher is still running in the tray or as a background process. End it in Task Manager before trying again.
5. Fix the common installer error codes

6. Reduce download pressure
The documented default settings are Concurrent Download: Max and download speed Unlimited. These settings can be difficult for an unstable connection, router, or older system to handle.
- Open RSI logo > Settings > Download.
- Lower Concurrent Download. RSI gives
10as an example. - Set the download-speed limit to
2000 KB/s. - Retry the installation or verification.
If the download succeeds at a lower rate, raise the limit gradually later. For error 5012, also power-cycle the router and test with a wired connection if possible.
7. Fix permissions and antivirus interference
Error 5009 usually means Windows prevented the launcher from creating or writing the required directory. Confirm that the selected drive is writable and that the channel folder exists. Run the launcher as administrator only for the repair attempt; do not assume that every launcher problem requires permanent administrator mode.
For error 4000, whitelist both RSI Launcher.exe and StarCitizen.exe. Antivirus and antimalware programs can also interrupt large file downloads and contribute to errors 3004 and 3005. Temporarily disabling protection can help identify interference, but only do so briefly and restore protection immediately afterward. Prefer adding an appropriate exclusion or whitelist entry.
If you see Session Expired, check VPN and security software first. RSI specifically mentions antivirus or antimalware interference and NordVPN’s Web Protect feature as examples to disable temporarily or configure correctly.
8. Apply the Windows 11 error 5021 workaround
RSI is tracking error 5021, shown as Installer Error, as a Windows 11 drive-sector-size issue. The documented workaround changes a Windows registry value.

- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command exactly:
REG ADD "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesstornvmeParametersDevice" /v "ForcedPhysicalSectorSizeInBytes" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "* 4095" /f- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Star Citizen installation.
Registry edits can cause serious Windows problems if entered incorrectly. Copy the command carefully, use an elevated Command Prompt, and do not change unrelated registry entries. If the command does not apply to your setup or the problem continues, use the other repairs instead of making additional undocumented changes.

9. Update SSD drivers and check the drive format
RSI’s Windows 11 installation guidance identifies outdated SSD drivers as a possible cause, reported most often with Samsung SSDs but not limited to them. Check the SSD manufacturer’s official support site for current firmware and drivers; avoid third-party driver-download sites.
To check the file system, open File Explorer, right-click the installation drive, select Properties, and confirm that File system is NTFS. Back up important data before changing partitions or reformatting a drive.
10. Clear the launcher cache
Clear the cache before performing a complete reset. This removes launcher cache data without deleting the entire Star Citizen installation.
- Open the launcher.
- Click RSI logo/drop-down > Settings > Application.
- Click CLEAR LAUNCHER CACHE.
- Restart the launcher and retry the operation.
The same screen has a GET LOGS button. Save the logs before deleting launcher data if you may need to contact RSI Support.

Click GET LOGS in Settings > Application, or open the log folder directly:
%appdata%rsilauncherlogsOpen log.log and inspect the newest entries at the bottom. Search for the error number, Installer exception, data.p4k, permission messages, or network failures. For error 5013, RSI gives examples such as:

Worker threw: Installer exception: @ - u001bu002Do not expect logindata.json to remain after the launcher closes. RSI says it is generated while the launcher is open and deleted when it exits.
12. Reinstall the current launcher
If you see You do not have permission to sign in, the installed launcher is not the proper current version. Uninstall it and download a fresh copy from the official RSI website.
- Sign in at the RSI website.
- Click the account icon in the upper-right.
- Click the light-blue DOWNLOAD button.
- Choose the first option, Download and install the RSI Launcher.
- Install that copy and sign in again.
Do not rely on an old direct-download link copied from Spectrum, a forum post, or another website. The official download page is the source for the current installer. After logging in, the launcher should detect an outdated version and offer an update. You can see the installed version under Settings > About.
13. Perform a complete reset only as a last resort
A complete reset removes launcher data and the game installation. Save your logs first and use this only when verification, cache clearing, path correction, and the targeted error-code repair have failed.
- Close the launcher completely, including its system-tray process.
- Press Windows+R, enter
%appdata%, and delete thersilauncherfolder. - Open Run again and delete
%localappdata%StarCitizen. - On the installation drive, delete the
Roberts Space Industriesfolder underProgram Files. - Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current launcher from the RSI website and install Star Citizen again.
If you previously ran the launcher with Run as Administrator, its AppData files may have been created under the Administrator account instead of your normal Windows account. If expected files are missing, check other accounts under C:Users<account>AppDataLocal.
To remove only one channel, sign in to the launcher, select the environment above the Launch Game or Update button, click the adjacent gear icon, and select Uninstall.
Do not delete the USER folder for every installer error
Deleting StarCitizenLIVEUSER is documented for login-access problems and rebuilding user content, not as a universal installer-error fix. If that is the specific problem, delete the LIVE channel’s USER folder, fully shut down Windows, restart, and try logging in again. It may remove local settings and user data, so do not use it as a first response to a failed download.

Additional launcher-specific issue: Sonic Studio
If the launcher log contains:
"error":"Star Citizen process exited abnormally (code: 3221225477)and Sonic Studio 3 or Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer is installed, RSI says the Sonic Studio software must be fully uninstalled. This is a separate compatibility problem rather than a damaged installer package.
Recommended repair order
- Check free space, SSD use, NTFS format, Windows updates, and required Windows components.
- Quit every RSI Launcher process.
- Correct Settings > Games > Game Library Folder.
- Run VERIFY.
- Repair or remove
data.p4kif the installation failed around that file. - Reduce downloads to 10 concurrent downloads and
