A migration-related traffic drop is fixed by identifying what changed, proving whether Google can crawl and index the new URLs, and correcting the signals that connect old pages to their replacements. Start by classifying the move: a domain, protocol, hostname, or path change needs an old-to-new URL map and tested permanent redirects; a hosting-only move, where visible URLs stay the same, is primarily a DNS, availability, server-response, and crawl-capacity investigation.
Do not assume every post-launch decline means the migration damaged rankings. Google says URL changes can cause temporary fluctuations while pages are recrawled and reindexed. Outages, algorithm changes, security or manual actions, seasonality, changing query demand, and altered search results can produce the same symptom.
First determine what kind of migration occurred
Write down the launch date, the old and new hostnames, protocols, paths, and any platform or infrastructure changes. The visible URL determines the first diagnostic branch.
| Migration type | Did the visible URL change? | Main work | Search Console Change of Address |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain or subdomain move | Yes | Map every important old URL, deploy permanent redirects, update canonicals, links, and sitemaps, and monitor both properties | Use where applicable |
| HTTP to HTTPS | Yes | Redirect HTTP URLs, correct mixed canonical and internal-link signals, and submit the HTTPS sitemap | Not required |
| www/non-www change | Yes | Redirect the previous hostname and make the preferred hostname consistent everywhere | Not required |
| Path or URL structure change on the same domain | Yes | Build a page-level map, test redirects, and replace old internal links | Not required |
| Hosting, CDN, or server move with unchanged URLs | No | Investigate DNS, TLS, uptime, status codes, crawl rate, capacity, and logs | Not applicable |
| Combined move | Yes, often in several dimensions | Handle URL mapping and infrastructure checks together; isolate each change in your timeline | Use only if the domain change qualifies |
Google maintains separate guidance for URL-changing moves and hosting changes. If no URL changed, do not treat the incident as a redirect migration: a broken DNS record, TLS certificate, overloaded origin, or blocked Googlebot can explain the loss without any URL mapping problem.

Separate indexing, ranking, clicks, and demand
“Not indexed” and “ranking dropped” describe different failures. A page must be crawled and selected for indexing before it can receive normal organic visibility, but an indexed page can still rank lower, receive fewer clicks, or lose clicks because the search results changed.
Use the correct comparison in Search Console
- Open Performance and compare the migration period with a comparable prior period. Google recommends using up to 16 months of data so seasonal patterns are visible.
- Break the comparison down by Pages, Queries, Countries, Devices, and Search type. Export the affected groups if the site is large.
- Compare clicks and impressions together. A click decline with roughly stable impressions points toward titles, snippets, SERP features, or changing click behavior. A fall in both impressions and clicks points toward visibility, indexing, technical availability, or demand.
- Check whether the loss is concentrated in migrated URLs, one directory, one template, one country, mobile users, or a particular query class. A narrow pattern is more actionable than a sitewide percentage.
Use Page indexing and Crawl stats for site-level patterns, then use URL Inspection on a representative sample: a high-traffic page, a page reported as not indexed, a newly migrated page, and a page that did not lose traffic. Analytics supplies behavior and revenue context, while server logs show what Googlebot actually requested.
Build and test an old-to-new URL map
For a URL-changing move, the map is the migration’s control document. Each old URL that has useful content, links, rankings, or traffic should point to the closest useful new equivalent. Preserve the page’s intent rather than sending unrelated URLs to the home page.
Recommended Free Tools
What the map should contain
- Old absolute URL, including protocol, hostname, path, and important query handling.
- New canonical URL and the reason it is the equivalent destination.
- Expected response, normally a single permanent redirect for a moved page.
- Owner or template responsible for implementation.
- Test status, launch date, and any exception such as a deliberately retired page.
Include high-value URLs from analytics, Search Console, XML sitemaps, internal-link reports, and backlink reports. Do not map only the homepage or a sample of URLs and assume the rest will follow.
Test representative URLs before and after launch
- Choose old URLs from every important template, directory, language, device variant, and status-code pattern.
- Request each old URL and verify that it returns one permanent redirect, such as HTTP 301 or another permanent redirect, to the intended new URL.
- Request the final destination and verify a successful response, the expected content, and the intended canonical URL.
- Check for redirect loops, chains, wrong destinations, redirects to nonexistent pages, and unexpected 4xx or 5xx responses.
- Crawl the complete mapping when the site is large. A bulk crawler can accelerate this audit, but Search Console, server logs, and command-line checks remain the source of truth for Googlebot behavior.
Google’s migration documentation states: “301 and other permanent redirects don’t cause a loss in PageRank.” That statement means a correct permanent redirect does not inherently discard PageRank; it does not guarantee unchanged traffic. A wrong mapping, unavailable destination, changed content, crawl block, or ordinary ranking fluctuation can still reduce visibility.

curl -I https://old.example/path
Follow the complete chain when needed:
curl -I -L https://old.example/path
Confirm that the final response is the intended page, that the chain is short, and that the server does not return an error after redirecting. Replace the example host and path with your own URLs; do not test only the homepage.
Remove accidental crawl and indexing barriers
Migration launches often leave staging protections on the production site or apply a rule to an entire directory. Inspect the new site and a sample of affected URLs for all three common barriers.
Robots.txt
Review the production robots.txt file for Disallow rules that cover migrated directories, assets, or the whole site. A robots.txt block can prevent crawling, so Google may not see a page’s updated canonical or content. Do not use robots.txt as a canonicalization method.
Meta robots and X-Robots-Tag
Inspect the HTML for a staging directive such as noindex and inspect HTTP headers for an X-Robots-Tag that blocks indexing. Check templates, middleware, CDN rules, and environment variables; a global setting can affect thousands of pages.
URL Inspection evidence
In Search Console’s URL Inspection, test the live URL and review whether it is accessible, which canonical Google selected, the last crawl information, and any indexing exclusion. A crawled URL is not automatically indexed: Google can fetch a page and still decide not to show it.
Also confirm that the page is not accidentally redirected, returns the expected status, and contains the intended content rather than a login screen, maintenance page, or empty shell.

Make every canonical signal agree
Choose one preferred new URL for each page and use it consistently in four places:
- Permanent redirects from the old URL.
- The page’s
rel="canonical"annotation. - Internal links, navigation, pagination, and structured content references.
- The submitted XML sitemap.
Google describes redirects and rel="canonical" as strong canonical signals and sitemap inclusion as a weaker signal. A sitemap helps discovery and communicates your preferred URLs; it is not a guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or rank every listed page.
Do not place a noindex directive on a page to select another canonical, and do not use robots.txt to choose between duplicate URLs. Those controls solve different problems and can prevent Google from evaluating the signals you intended to send.

Refresh discovery and external references
Submit the new sitemap
Generate a sitemap containing the preferred new URLs and remove old URLs that are no longer canonical. Submit the new sitemap in the correct Search Console property. Check that entries return successful responses, are not blocked, and carry canonicals that point to themselves or to the intended preferred URL.
Replace internal links
Update menus, breadcrumbs, related-content modules, XML feeds, hreflang references, pagination, and structured data so they link directly to new URLs. Internal links that continue through redirects waste crawl resources and can leave conflicting signals. Direct links also make it easier for users and crawlers to discover the replacement pages.
Use Change of Address only when it applies
For a qualifying domain or subdomain move, use Search Console’s Change of Address process while the old property and redirects remain available. Google says the tool is not needed for HTTP-to-HTTPS moves, www/non-www changes, or path changes on the same domain.

Update important external links
When practical, ask important linking sites to replace old URLs with the new ones. This is not a substitute for redirects, but direct links reduce dependence on redirect chains and help users reach the correct destination.

Check hosting, DNS, and server capacity
Google may crawl the new site more heavily during a URL move. Review server logs for Googlebot requests, response times, status codes, and repeated failures.
- Look for unexpected 4xx and 5xx responses, especially on migrated templates and assets.
- Verify DNS records resolve consistently and that the TLS certificate covers every production hostname.
- Check load balancers, firewall rules, bot controls, CDN settings, and rate limits for Googlebot blocks or throttling.
- Confirm the origin can handle increased concurrent crawling without timing out or returning intermittent errors.
- Compare log requests for old and new URLs. A healthy transition generally shows old requests declining while new URL requests increase.
Do not identify a crawler solely by a user-agent string if your log analysis supports reverse-DNS or other validation. The practical question is whether Googlebot can repeatedly retrieve the intended pages with the expected responses.
Look for penalties, security problems, and removed URLs
In Search Console, inspect Manual actions, Security issues, and any removed-URL settings. This check is particularly important if the destination domain was previously used by another organization. A migration can coincide with a manual action or inherited security problem without being its cause.
Also review deployment history, incident records, uptime monitoring, and application errors. A brief outage during launch may explain a sharp crawl or ranking change, while a continuing error requires infrastructure remediation rather than more redirects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDistinguish a normal transition from a technical failure
| Evidence | More consistent with normal recrawling | More consistent with a migration defect |
|---|---|---|
| Old versus new indexed URLs | Old URLs decline while new URLs gradually appear | Old URLs disappear but equivalent new URLs remain excluded or absent |
| Impressions and clicks | Short-lived movement across many pages with no common error | Both collapse for one template, directory, hostname, or launch batch |
| Status codes | Old URLs redirect directly and destinations return expected success responses | Loops, chains, wrong targets, 4xx/5xx responses, or intermittent timeouts |
| Crawl logs | Googlebot shifts from old URLs toward new URLs | Googlebot receives blocks, errors, or cannot reach the new host |
| Search Console controls | No new manual action or security issue | A manual action, security warning, or removed-URL configuration appears |
| Broader market pattern | Your site changes in line with seasonal demand or a known search-result change | Your decline begins exactly at launch and is isolated to migrated content |
Interpret the recovery timeline realistically
Google says medium-sized sites may take a few weeks for it to notice moved URLs, and larger sites can take longer. This is an observation about recrawling, not a recovery guarantee or an average. Timing varies by crawl demand, site size, server reliability, URL importance, and the quality of the migration signals.

Monitor the old and new properties separately. During a normal transition, old-URL indexing and traffic tend to trend down as new-URL indexing and traffic rise, but each URL can move on a different schedule. Keep redirects, the old property, and reliable server responses in place while the transition proceeds.
A sitemap can improve discovery but cannot force crawling, indexing, or ranking. Avoid radical redesigns, mass deletions, or repeated URL changes based only on a small position fluctuation. Investigate severe or persistent losses with evidence from logs, URL Inspection, indexing reports, and the affected page groups.
A repeatable incident runbook
- Record the change. Capture launch time, migration type, affected hosts and paths, deployment versions, and the first observed decline.
- Confirm the symptom. Compare clicks, impressions, indexed URL patterns, queries, devices, countries, and search type in Search Console and analytics.
- Choose the branch. If URLs changed, audit mapping and signals. If URLs did not change, prioritize DNS, TLS, availability, status codes, crawl rate, and logs.
- Test critical URLs. Inspect old URLs, final destinations, canonicals, robots directives, status codes, and representative templates.
- Repair launch blockers. Remove accidental noindex or robots restrictions, fix redirects and chains, restore successful responses, and correct server capacity issues.
- Align discovery. Submit the new sitemap, replace internal links, apply Change of Address when applicable, and request important external-link updates.
- Check independent causes. Review outages, algorithm changes, manual actions, security issues, seasonality, query demand, and search-result layout changes.
- Monitor trends. Track old and new URLs, crawl logs, indexing states, impressions, and clicks over successive comparable periods rather than relying on one day’s position.
Why common fixes fail
Redirecting everything to the homepage
This discards page intent and leaves users and crawlers without a close replacement. Map each old page to its most relevant new equivalent; retire a page only when there is genuinely no useful replacement.

A sitemap is a discovery and canonicalization hint, not an indexing command. If robots, noindex, canonicals, redirects, or server responses conflict, submitting the file alone will not repair the migration.
Using noindex to solve duplication
Noindex removes a URL from indexing; it does not select a canonical. Use the canonical signal appropriate to the duplication problem and make the preferred URL consistent across the site.
Changing content before finding the fault
Large content or template changes can make diagnosis harder and introduce a second variable. First establish whether Google can access the intended page, whether the URL is mapped correctly, and whether the canonical signals agree.
Promising a fixed recovery date
Google provides no guaranteed crawl, indexing, ranking, or recovery schedule. A few weeks is illustrative guidance for noticing moves on medium-sized sites, not a deadline by which every page should recover.
Quick Recap
What to preserve during the investigation
- Keep the old URLs responding with tested permanent redirects for as long as users and crawlers may follow them.
- Retain access to the old and new Search Console properties and preserve analytics annotations around the launch.
- Save redirect maps, deployment versions, sitemap files, robots.txt revisions, and server-log samples so changes can be correlated with effects.
- Fix one evidence-backed issue at a time when possible, then observe whether the affected URL group changes.
- Escalate when the site has persistent 5xx errors, widespread indexing exclusions, security warnings, or a migration map too large to validate manually.
