Incorrect WordPress thumbnails usually have one of three causes: the required size is defined in a different place than you expect, the crop mode does not match the layout, or an old derivative is still being served. Fix the source definition first, regenerate existing attachments, then verify the URL and responsive markup that the browser actually renders. Changing a Media setting or theme function does not rebuild image files that already exist.
What WordPress calls a thumbnail
When you upload an image, WordPress keeps the original file and creates derivative files at registered sizes. The standard Thumbnail size is 150 × 150 pixels by default. Medium, Large, Medium Large, and any sizes registered by the active theme or a plugin are separate derivatives, not alternate views of the original.

WordPress does not automatically recreate old derivatives when you change a setting or edit theme code.
Diagnose the actual source of the wrong size
1. Measure what is displayed
Right-click the image, choose the browser’s inspect or developer-tools command, and record both the rendered dimensions and the file’s intrinsic dimensions. A 150 × 150 file displayed in a 300 × 200 CSS box is a different problem from a 1,200-pixel file being constrained to 300 pixels by CSS.

2. Read the image URL
In the img element, inspect the current src and every URL in srcset. Common clues include:
-150x150: the default thumbnail derivative.-300x200or another numeric suffix: a proportional or cropped registered size.- A descriptive custom suffix: a theme or plugin size registered with
add_image_size(). - The original filename with no size suffix: the full-size upload, possibly being resized only by CSS.
The URL tells you what WordPress selected, not merely what your media library preview shows. Open the URL directly and check its pixel dimensions to determine whether the error is in file generation or in presentation.
3. Identify the requested size
Look at the template or block that outputs the image. A featured-image call may request post-thumbnail, while a gallery, widget, or custom block may request thumbnail, medium, or a theme-specific name. The name requested by the template must match a registered size; changing the administrator’s Thumbnail fields will not change a template that explicitly asks for another size.
Check both WordPress settings and theme registrations
Media settings
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings > Media.
- Review the pixel values for Thumbnail size, Medium size, and Large size.
- Check whether Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional) is enabled.
- Save the settings only after deciding the dimensions your layout actually needs.
The crop checkbox applies to the administrator-defined Thumbnail size. With cropping enabled, WordPress produces the requested width and height as a fixed rectangle, removing excess areas. With it disabled, WordPress scales proportionally so the image fits within the specified bounds; one dimension can be smaller than the value entered.
Theme and plugin code
The active theme can register a different featured-image size or override the apparent thumbnail behavior. Search the active theme and relevant plugins for these functions:

add_image_size( 'article-inline', 900, 0, false );The third argument in set_post_thumbnail_size() and add_image_size() controls cropping. true requests a hard crop to the exact box; false preserves the aspect ratio while fitting within the supplied dimensions. A zero height or width is commonly used when the other dimension should govern proportional scaling.

A plugin can also register its own name and use that name in a shortcode or block. If you cannot find the registration in the child theme, inspect the parent theme and plugins that control the affected component.
After editing code, clear any PHP opcode cache or page cache used by your host, and confirm that the changed code is loaded on the front end. A typo in a size name can cause a template to fall back to another image size or the original file.
Choose proportional scaling or a hard crop deliberately
Use proportional scaling when the entire image matters
Proportional scaling keeps the complete photograph or illustration visible. It is appropriate for article images, product details, diagrams, and portraits where cutting off the subject would be misleading. The resulting files may have different heights, so the surrounding layout must allow that variation.
Use a hard crop for uniform cards and grids
A hard crop gives every card the same rectangle, which keeps rows aligned. It can remove faces, logos, or other focal content if the crop position is not suitable. Test representative landscape, portrait, and square uploads; one crop setting rarely works perfectly for every composition.

If the subject is repeatedly cut off, changing only the pixel dimensions will not solve the problem. Adjust the registered crop dimensions, use a focal-point feature supplied by your image workflow, or select a different source image. Do not stretch an image to force it into a box: stretching changes the aspect ratio and produces visible distortion.
Regenerate existing attachments after correcting the definition
Changing the size definition affects future uploads immediately, but existing attachments still have the old derivative files. Regeneration creates the new derivatives from each attachment’s original full-size file. It does not improve a low-resolution original and does not replace that original.
Before regenerating
- Make a current backup of the uploads directory and database, especially on a production site.
- Confirm the active theme and the plugins that register image sizes. Deactivate or remove obsolete registrations first if they are generating unwanted files.
- Check available disk space. A large library and several new sizes can temporarily require substantial additional storage.
- Decide whether to preserve old, no-longer-used derivatives until caches and external references have expired.
Regenerate through the dashboard
A reputable thumbnail-regeneration plugin can process the Media Library after you save the new settings or code. Install one that is maintained and compatible with your WordPress version, then use its regeneration command, usually from a Tools or Media screen. Select all attachments for a library-wide repair, or select only the affected date range when the change concerns a recent import. Let the process finish; interrupting a browser-based batch can leave the library partially rebuilt.
Regeneration tools may offer a choice between all registered sizes and a selected size. Rebuilding only the changed size is faster and reduces disk use, but rebuilding all sizes is appropriate when several registrations or crop rules changed together.

wp media regenerateWP-CLI asks for confirmation and processes existing attachments. To target one registered size, use the image-size filter:
wp media regenerate --image_size=thumbnailReplace thumbnail with the exact registered name, such as post-thumbnail or a custom name. You can restrict the operation to selected attachment IDs by supplying those IDs after the command:
wp media regenerate 184 219 305 --image_size=card-landscapeRun wp media image-size to inspect registered sizes when you are unsure of a name. On a very large library, process IDs in batches and monitor disk space, execution time, and web-server load.

When the file is correct but the page still looks wrong
WordPress has native responsive-image support: since WordPress 4.4, generated image markup can include srcset and sizes attributes. The browser uses those hints, the viewport, and the device pixel ratio to choose a candidate. The URL visible in the initial HTML may not be the URL ultimately downloaded.
Inspect responsive selection
- In developer tools, open the final
imgelement and expandsrcsetandsizes. - In the Network panel, reload the page and identify the image request that actually completed.
- Compare that file’s dimensions with the CSS-rendered width. If the browser chooses a 150-pixel candidate for a 600-pixel slot, the
sizeshint or the requested WordPress size is too small. - Check whether a lazy-loading, optimization, CDN, or caching layer rewrites the URL. Purge that layer after regeneration.
A correct srcset still cannot fix an incorrect sizes value. For example, a layout that occupies 50vw on desktop should not advertise itself as 100vw, because the browser may download a larger file than necessary; advertising a tiny slot can produce blur. Use a sizes expression that reflects the actual layout at each breakpoint.

Check CSS and theme markup
CSS controls presentation, not the pixels stored in the derivative. Inspect width, height, max-width, aspect-ratio, and object-fit. A fixed height combined with object-fit: cover creates a visual crop even when the source file is proportional. A fixed width and height without an appropriate fit rule can stretch the image. Remove conflicting declarations from page-builder or block styles, and verify that the theme is not applying a background image or a separate mobile source.
If the HTML requests a named size that no longer exists, the theme may fall back to a larger file and rely on CSS. That can look acceptable at one breakpoint while appearing soft or oddly cropped at another. Correct the template’s size name, regenerate that registered size, and then purge caches.
Match the fix to the scope of the problem

Common symptoms and targeted fixes
Featured images are cropped to the wrong subject
Confirm that the template requests post-thumbnail and identify the dimensions and crop flag used to register it. If the theme’s crop is intentional but the focal point is not, change the crop dimensions or use a source image with safer margins. Regenerate the affected attachments after the code change.
Thumbnails have inconsistent dimensions
Look for proportional scaling. A non-square source will not become a uniform rectangle when crop is disabled. If the design requires equal cards, register a hard-cropped size and ensure every card uses that name rather than the generic proportional Thumbnail size.
Images are blurry after regeneration
Open the regenerated file itself. If it is sharp at its intrinsic dimensions, inspect the browser’s selected srcset candidate, the sizes attribute, and any optimization or CDN rewrite. If the regenerated file is already soft, the original upload may not contain enough pixels for the requested display size.
New uploads look right but old posts do not
This is the expected result when definitions changed without regeneration. Rebuild the old attachments, purge page and image caches, and check an old post in a private browser window. Do not re-upload every image unless the originals are missing or damaged.

Verify that you edited the active theme, not an inactive theme; that the registered size name is exact; and that the page is not serving a cached or CDN URL. Check the file modification time and dimensions in the uploads directory, then inspect the final network request again.
Verify the repair with old and new images
- Choose one attachment uploaded before the change and one uploaded afterward.
- Check their generated files in the Media Library or uploads directory for the intended pixel dimensions and crop.
- Open a post or archive that uses the affected component and confirm the final downloaded URL.
- Test a narrow mobile viewport, a normal desktop viewport, and a high-density display. Confirm that the selected candidate is large enough without being unnecessarily huge.
- Check landscape, portrait, and square source images so a crop that works for one composition does not hide important content in another.
- After verification, purge page, object, optimization, and CDN caches in the order specified by your hosting setup.
Prevent future thumbnail mismatches
- Document every custom image-size name, width, height, and crop rule in the theme or plugin repository.
- Keep image-size registration in the active theme or a site-specific plugin rather than scattering it across temporary snippets.
- Use descriptive names such as
card-landscapeand request those names explicitly in templates. - Define responsive
sizesvalues from the real layout widths, then check them after major breakpoint changes. - Run a targeted regeneration whenever a size definition or crop rule changes; schedule a full-library rebuild only when several sizes changed.
- Retain the original uploads and maintain backups before bulk operations.
- Review a representative set of existing posts after every theme replacement, because a new theme can register different sizes while old derivatives remain on disk.
A concise decision sequence
Start with the URL and rendered dimensions, not with another upload. If the wrong derivative is named, inspect Settings > Media and theme/plugin registrations. Decide whether the layout needs proportional scaling or a hard crop. Save the corrected definition, regenerate the relevant attachments, and then inspect srcset, sizes, CSS, and caches if the downloaded file is still not the one you expect. This sequence separates file-generation errors from browser-presentation errors and prevents unnecessary re-uploads.
