Fix metadata by first identifying whether the server cannot see the file, cannot match it to the right title, cannot retrieve provider data, or is being overridden by local metadata. In Plex, use Scan Library Files for file-system changes and Refresh Metadata for an item that already exists but has stale or missing details. In Jellyfin, use a dedicated library type, clear names and folders, provider identifiers when needed, and inspect local NFO files and artwork when remote data is not winning.
The same poster or title problem can therefore require completely different fixes. The procedure below separates discovery, matching, provider access, language, and local overrides so you can change only what is necessary.
Start by classifying the symptom
Before changing names or deleting metadata, check what the server is actually showing. There are four common states:

- The file is absent from the library. The server may not have access to the folder, the folder may not be included in the intended library, or the library has not been scanned since the file changed.
- The item is present but identified as the wrong work. The server found the file but matched an ambiguous name to another movie, episode, or series.
- The match is right but details are missing or stale. The title may be correct while the plot, cast, rating, poster, or other fields were not retrieved or have not been updated.
- A local file is overriding the provider result. An NFO file or local image can deliberately or accidentally take precedence over information downloaded from an online provider.
Use the first matching branch rather than repeatedly refreshing the whole library. A refresh cannot discover a file in a folder the server cannot read, and renaming a correctly matched file will not repair a local NFO that keeps supplying the wrong poster.

Plex: scan files and refresh metadata are different operations
Plex documents a deliberate distinction between scanning and refreshing. A scan checks the library’s folders for new, removed, renamed, or moved files. A metadata refresh updates information and artwork for items that are already represented in the library.
Use Scan Library Files for file-system changes
Run Scan Library Files after you add media, remove it, rename it, or move it. The scan finds new or changed files and can fetch metadata for newly discovered or unmatched items as needed.
- Confirm that the Plex server account can read the media folder.
- Confirm that the folder is included in the library you intend to use.
- Run Scan Library Files for that library.
- Wait for the scan to finish, then look for the file before changing its name or metadata.
If the item still does not appear, the problem is discovery or access rather than a poster or title match. Repeating a metadata refresh will not make an inaccessible path appear.
Use an item-level metadata refresh for one existing item
When the movie, show, album, or episode is already listed but its details are missing or outdated, use the item’s metadata refresh action. This asks Plex to retrieve current metadata and artwork for that existing item without treating the problem as a file-system change.
Use Refresh All Metadata only when the scope is intentional
Refresh All Metadata processes items that already have metadata as well as items with missing details. It is appropriate after a library-wide metadata configuration change, but a full refresh can take a long time. Do not use it as the first response to one incorrect poster when an item-level refresh is sufficient.

Why Plex matched the wrong movie or show
An incorrect match usually means Plex found a plausible title but selected the wrong result. Check the library configuration before trying a mass refresh.

Verify the library content type and scanner
Review the library’s content type and scanner. A movie library, television library, and music library provide different matching context. If the type does not describe the files, matching can be less reliable because Plex is asking the metadata system the wrong kind of question.
Check the selected metadata agent and source priority
Plex agents obtain rich metadata from local or online sources. Their settings determine which sources are used and the priority in which those sources are consulted. A source with incomplete or differently titled records can win when it is placed ahead of a source that better describes your collection.
After changing an agent or its source priority, refresh existing content if you want the change applied to items already in the library. Merely changing the agent on an existing library otherwise affects future content; it does not automatically rewrite every existing item.
Check the library’s primary language
The library’s primary language controls the metadata gathered from the internet. If the language is wrong, Plex may return titles, summaries, or artwork from an unintended language catalog. Changing the language does not retroactively update existing items. Run the appropriate item-level refresh or Refresh All Metadata, depending on whether the correction is local or library-wide.
Choose the smallest corrective action
- One wrong match: correct the item’s match or refresh that item after checking the agent and naming.
- Many existing items changed after an agent or language adjustment: use Refresh All Metadata and allow time for the operation.
- Only newly added files are wrong: correct the library settings before adding more media, then scan and refresh the affected items.
Keep the scan/refresh distinction in mind: scanning addresses whether Plex sees the file, while refreshing addresses what Plex knows about a file it already sees.

Jellyfin’s identification process depends heavily on how a library is organized and which metadata providers are reachable. Start there before adding identifiers to every filename.

Use a dedicated library type
Create separate movie, show, and music libraries when those are the kinds of media you have. Jellyfin explicitly discourages the mixed library type because metadata results are unreliable when unrelated media types share one matching context.
A dedicated library gives the server an immediate clue about what a folder contains. It also makes later troubleshooting clearer: a movie title is evaluated as a movie instead of competing with show or music interpretations.
Check provider availability and geography
Jellyfin lists TMDb, the OMDb API, and local NFO files among its default metadata sources. Additional providers, including TheTVDB, may be available through the plugin catalog. Provider access is not universal by location; Jellyfin notes that some providers, including TMDb and TheTVDB, may not be accessible in mainland China.
If a title fails to match in a region where a provider is unavailable, treat that as a provider-access issue rather than proof that the filename is wrong. Use an accessible provider, local metadata, or an explicit identifier when those options fit your setup.
Make Jellyfin identify an ambiguous movie or show
Clear names and predictable folders should be the first line of defense. A movie or series name that contains extra words, multiple editions, or an unusual release label can leave several plausible provider records.
Use unambiguous names and folders
- Give each movie or series a clearly identifiable name.
- Keep movies and shows in the corresponding dedicated library.
- Use a folder structure that makes the work and, for shows, the series identity clear before Jellyfin scans it.
- Refresh the affected item after correcting the name or location.
Do not add an identifier until the ordinary name and library type are correct; an ID cannot compensate for a library that is aimed at the wrong media type.

Add a provider identifier when the title is still ambiguous
Jellyfin documents putting provider IDs in the movie or show file or folder name. Supported identifier forms include TMDb, TVDb, and OMDb/IMDb IDs. Its examples include [tmdbid-680] and [imdbid-tt12801262].

- Find the provider record that represents the exact movie, series, or edition you own.
- Copy its identifier exactly; verify that it is not the ID for a similarly titled remake, season, special, or alternate edition.
- Add the documented bracketed identifier to the movie or show file or folder name.
- Rescan or refresh the affected Jellyfin library item so the server evaluates the new name.
An identifier is a disambiguation tool, not a substitute for checking the record. A correct-looking number that points to the wrong title will make the wrong match more repeatable.
Jellyfin local NFO files and artwork can override remote metadata
If a refresh does not produce the expected title, plot, or image, inspect the media directory for local metadata. Jellyfin gives local NFO values priority over remote provider metadata. It also gives image paths or URLs in NFO files priority over remote image providers and artwork stored in the media folders.
Inspect the likely override points
- Look for an NFO file beside the movie, show, season, or episode.
- Open the NFO and check the title, plot, IDs, and image references.
- Check local poster, backdrop, and other artwork files in the media folder.
- Confirm that an image path or URL in the NFO points to the artwork you actually want.
Correct or remove an unintended override
Edit the incorrect local value, replace the image reference, or remove the unintended local metadata when remote provider data is desired. Then refresh the item. Jellyfin currently does not provide a way to disable local metadata globally, so an unwanted NFO or local image must be corrected at its source.
Keep local metadata when you intentionally curate titles, plots, artwork, or IDs; the same precedence that causes a stale poster also lets you preserve a deliberate local edit against future provider changes.

- Confirm visibility. If the item is absent, verify server access to the folder and library inclusion. In Plex, run Scan Library Files after the path is correct.
- Separate matching from fetching. If the item is present with the wrong title, investigate identification. If the title is right but details are stale, use a metadata refresh.
- Check library type. In Plex, verify content type and scanner. In Jellyfin, use a dedicated movie, show, or music library rather than a mixed library.
- Check provider configuration. Review Plex agent and source priority, Plex primary language, or Jellyfin provider availability and geography.
- Make naming unambiguous. Correct the movie or series name and folder structure before escalating to identifiers.
- Add an explicit Jellyfin ID when needed. Use the documented bracketed TMDb, TVDb, or OMDb/IMDb form and verify the ID’s target first.
- Inspect local overrides. For Jellyfin, check NFO files and local artwork before assuming the remote provider is returning bad data.
- Refresh at the right scope. Refresh one item for a local problem; use Plex Refresh All Metadata only when a library-wide change must be applied to existing items.
- Recheck the result. Confirm the title, summary, artwork, and language after the operation completes. If only one field remains wrong, return to the source that controls that field instead of repeating every earlier step.

Common mistakes that prolong metadata problems
Refreshing before making the file visible
A refresh is not a substitute for a scan or a readable path. If the server never discovered the file, fix access and library inclusion first.
Using a full refresh for every small error
Refreshing all Plex metadata reprocesses items that already have metadata and may take a long time. Start with the smallest affected item unless the underlying agent, source priority, or language setting changed across the library.
Changing a Plex agent and expecting old items to change automatically
Agent changes on an existing library otherwise affect future content. Refresh existing items explicitly when the new agent configuration should govern them.

Jellyfin discourages mixed libraries because identification results are unreliable. Separate the media types before trying more elaborate naming fixes.
Assuming an online provider is always reachable
Regional availability can determine whether Jellyfin can retrieve a match. Check provider access, especially where Jellyfin documents limitations for TMDb and TheTVDB, before treating a failed lookup as a naming failure.
Ignoring local files after a refresh
An NFO or local image can win every time a remote refresh runs. Correct the local source or remove the unintended override rather than repeatedly requesting the same remote data.
