On a Snapdragon X laptop, an old Windows application can often run through Windows 11 on Arm’s Prism emulation layer. That does not make every part of the application compatible: a printer, scanner, audio interface, VPN client, virtual printer, capture device, or other accessory may still fail because its kernel driver, filter, service, or shell extension is not available for Arm64.
The reliable fix is to identify which layer is failing, update Windows and the laptop manufacturer’s software, install an ARM64 build whenever one exists, and check hardware-driver support separately. If the device maker has not released an Arm64 driver and Windows does not include an inbox driver for the exact model, no Prism setting, USB hub, or reinstall can create one. You then need a supported application or peripheral, or an x86-64 Windows computer.
What compatibility means on a Snapdragon X laptop
Snapdragon X systems run Windows 11 on Arm. There are two fundamentally different ways software can work:

- Native ARM64: The program was compiled for the Arm64 instruction set and runs directly on the processor. This is normally the best path for performance, battery life, installation reliability, and access to Arm-compatible components.
- Emulated x86 or x64: The program was built for conventional Intel or AMD processors. Windows uses Microsoft’s Prism emulation engine to translate its user-mode instructions so the application can run on an Arm device.
Prism is designed for everyday applications that do not yet have a native Windows-on-Arm release. It cannot translate a missing kernel driver into an Arm64 driver. Microsoft states that peripherals and devices work only when the required drivers are built into Windows 11 or the hardware developer has released Arm64 drivers for that device. That distinction explains the most confusing failure pattern: the main program opens, but printing, scanning, recording, authentication, or another device feature is absent.

Prism is available on supported Windows 11 on Arm devices, and Microsoft documents performance features that require Snapdragon X-series hardware. Emulation behavior can also change with Windows builds and application updates, so a result observed on one laptop or version is not a permanent guarantee for every installation.
First classify the failure
Do not start by repeatedly reinstalling the application. Determine whether the failure occurs in the application itself or in a component it calls.

If the application launches and only one hardware-dependent function fails, treat it as a driver problem until testing proves otherwise. An emulated executable and an Arm64 driver are separate deliverables.

Step-by-step repair sequence
1. Install current Windows and OEM updates
- Open Settings and select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates, install all offered updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and open Advanced options and Optional updates if they are present. Review driver updates that apply to the laptop, but do not install an unrelated package merely because it is listed.
- Visit the support page for the exact Snapdragon X laptop model and install its current firmware, chipset, graphics, networking, audio, and platform packages. Follow the maker’s restart instructions.
Compatibility is version-sensitive. Updating first prevents you from diagnosing a defect that has already been fixed in a newer Windows build or OEM package.
2. Find a native ARM64 application
Check the software developer’s download page for an explicit ARM64, Windows on Arm, or native Arm label. The Microsoft Store listing may identify the supported architecture as well. Prefer that package over an older x86 or x64 installer when the features you need are equivalent.
Do not infer architecture from a file name, the age of an application, or the fact that it is distributed as a universal installer. If the publisher does not state Arm support, ask which edition is supported on Windows 11 on Arm and whether its drivers, plug-ins, and services are included.

3. Install an x86 or x64 app through Prism
When no ARM64 build exists, install the current x86 or x64 release from the publisher’s normal channel. Windows 11 on Arm uses Prism for supported user-mode applications; there is usually no separate Prism download to find.
Microsoft documents optional per-application emulation and compatibility settings for uncommon failures. Use those settings only for the affected application and follow the instructions for your Windows build. They can address a program’s user-mode behavior, but they cannot repair a missing device driver, kernel service, filter, shell extension, or hardware-control component.
After installation, open the program with no peripheral attached and test its basic, non-hardware functions. If those work, connect the device and test one feature at a time. This separates an emulation problem from a driver problem.
4. Test the device with Windows’ own support
- Connect the device directly to the laptop, avoiding a dock or hub during the first test.
- Open Settings and use the relevant device page, such as Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, to choose Add device or the equivalent discovery control.
- For a printer or scanner, see whether Windows can discover the exact model and expose basic functions without the manufacturer’s installer.
- For audio or capture hardware, select it in Settings > System > Sound and test input and output before installing optional control software.
- If Windows cannot detect the device at all, confirm the cable, power, port, and exact model, then check the vendor’s Arm64 driver statement. A different revision in the same product family may use a different driver.
Microsoft warns that some manufacturer installers, including printer installers, may not work when the installer software itself lacks Arm support. A failed installer is not proof that the hardware is unusable; the built-in Windows driver may still provide basic operation. Conversely, successful discovery does not prove that advanced features or a vendor control panel will work.
5. Install an Arm64 driver only when the vendor supplies one
Search the hardware developer’s support page using the exact model and revision. The package should explicitly identify an Arm64 or Windows on Arm driver, not merely say Windows 11, Windows 10, or 64-bit Windows. Confirm whether the download includes the companion application, service, filter, and control panel required for the feature you need.
Install the driver using the vendor’s documented procedure or Windows’ normal driver-selection interface. Do not force an x64 driver onto an Arm system: an application may be emulated, but a kernel-mode driver must be compiled for the processor architecture supported by Windows. If the vendor supplies only an x86 or x64 driver, ask whether an Arm64 release is planned and whether the device is supported through an inbox Windows driver instead.

6. Retest after a clean, minimal installation
Remove only the failed vendor utility or driver package that the manufacturer’s instructions identify, restart, and test the basic Windows driver before adding optional control software. Reinstalling every component at once can hide which package caused the failure. Keep the application update and driver update separate so you can identify a regression.
If an update makes a previously working function fail, record the Windows build, application version, driver version, exact device model, and the date of the change. Give those details to the vendor; they are more useful than reporting that the program simply “doesn’t work.”
Why Prism cannot fix a driver-dependent feature
Prism translates instructions executed by an x86 or x64 application in user mode. A driver operates at a different layer and communicates with the Windows kernel, hardware, or a virtual device. Filters and services may sit between the application and the driver, while shell extensions and control panels provide the user interface. Every one of those components must be available in a form Windows on Arm can load.

This applies to more than obvious peripherals. A scanner utility, audio-interface mixer, VPN client, anti-cheat module, virtual printer, capture-device application, or security product may open its window while the component that performs the real work fails.
- Kernel or hardware driver: Talks directly to the device or exposes a virtual device to Windows.
- Filter driver: Intercepts storage, printing, networking, audio, or other traffic and must match the supported architecture.
- Background service: Performs discovery, licensing, firmware communication, or device management outside the main application.
- Shell extension or control panel: Adds dialogs or Explorer integration that may have its own architecture requirement.
- Plug-in or codec: Extends the application and may not be loadable even when the host program runs under Prism.
When any required component lacks Arm64 support, changing an emulation option cannot substitute for it. The practical question is not “Does the app open?” but “Does every component required by this workflow support Windows on Arm?”
Peripheral-specific checks
Printers and scanners
Start with Windows’ built-in printer or scanner setup for the exact model. Basic printing or scanning may work through an inbox driver even when the maker’s full installer, status monitor, OCR utility, or color-management panel does not. If discovery works but advanced functions are missing, the missing feature is likely implemented by a vendor driver or utility rather than by Prism.

Use the model and hardware revision in your support request. A generic product-family name is insufficient because different revisions can require different drivers. If the manufacturer offers no Arm64 package, choose a model explicitly supported on Windows on Arm or use the device from an x86-64 Windows computer.

Test the device with Windows’ standard sound or camera controls before installing a mixer, routing tool, firmware utility, or plug-in. If basic input or output works but low-latency modes, routing, monitoring, or capture controls do not, check each companion component separately. The main recording or video application may run through Prism while the device’s control software remains incompatible.
VPN, security, and anti-cheat software
These products commonly rely on low-level networking or security components. A graphical client can launch under Prism while its service or driver cannot load. Look for a publisher statement covering Windows 11 on Arm, not merely a statement that the user interface supports Windows 11. If the required component is unavailable, select a supported client rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same package.
Docks, hubs, and adapters
A hub can change how a device is connected, but it cannot create an absent Arm64 driver. Test directly connected first to remove the hub as a variable. Add the dock only after the device works with a supported Windows or vendor driver. If the peripheral still lacks Arm64 support, changing cables, docks, or ports will not solve the architectural incompatibility.
Choosing between native, emulated, and replacement solutions

Compare five things before deciding: whether a native build exists, whether the workflow needs a kernel or device driver, the vendor’s update commitment, the performance and feature completeness you require, and the cost of replacing the application or peripheral versus using an x86-64 PC.
How to verify support before buying or migrating
- List every component. Include the main application, plug-ins, codecs, license manager, background services, device drivers, control panels, and firmware tools.
- Check the publisher’s architecture statement. Look for ARM64 or Windows-on-Arm wording on the developer download page or Microsoft Store listing.
- Check hardware support by exact model. Confirm an inbox Windows driver or an Arm64 driver from the hardware developer. Do not rely on a general Windows 11 logo.
- Search Microsoft’s Works on WoA compatibility directory. Treat an entry as a current check, not a permanent guarantee; application versions and Windows builds change.
- Ask about the complete workflow. Vendors should confirm the driver, service, plug-ins, and advanced features you actually use, not only whether the main executable launches.
- Keep a fallback plan. If the workflow is business-critical, retain access to a supported x86-64 Windows computer until the vendor confirms Arm64 support in writing.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing settings when the evidence shows that a required component has no Arm64 version and Windows has no suitable inbox driver. There is no universal success percentage for Snapdragon X compatibility: support depends on each application’s release, each hardware model, and the Windows build.

At that point, send the vendor the application version, Windows edition and build, Snapdragon X laptop model, exact peripheral model and revision, and the failing feature. Ask three specific questions: Is the application supported on Windows 11 on Arm? Is the required driver or service compiled for Arm64? Is the advanced feature supported, or only basic operation through an inbox driver?
If the answer to the second question is no, Prism cannot provide a workaround. Use a vendor-supported alternative, replace the peripheral with one whose Arm64 support is documented, or move that workflow to an x86-64 Windows computer. Those are compatibility decisions, not failures of a USB accessory or an emulation setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will every x64 Windows application run on a Snapdragon X laptop?
No. Many x64 applications can run as user-mode programs through Prism, but compatibility is application-specific, and any required driver, service, filter, plug-in, or hardware component must also support Windows on Arm.

The utility can be emulated while its device driver or manufacturer service is not available for Arm64. Test the exact model with Windows’ built-in driver and ask the manufacturer for an Arm64 package.
Can a USB-C dock or hub add the missing compatibility?
No. A dock changes connectivity; it cannot create an Arm64 driver. Test the device directly, then use a dock only after the device works with a supported driver.
How do I know whether to keep troubleshooting or replace the device?
If Windows has no inbox driver and the manufacturer has no Arm64 driver for the exact model, further Prism or reinstall changes cannot restore the feature. Choose a documented Arm-supported alternative or use an x86-64 Windows computer.
