If your Omata Classic shows an implausible speed or distance, first obtain a fresh outdoor GPS fix and keep the bezel in RIDE for the entire ride. Then use the OMATA Utility App and an exported .FIT file to determine whether the recorded data is wrong or only the analog hands are miscalibrated. The available official instructions are labeled for OMATA One, not Classic, so the procedure below is the closest documented OMATA guidance; it does not assert an undocumented Classic-only reset or firmware method.
Start by identifying what is inaccurate
There are two different faults that look similar on the road:
- Display-only error: the physical speed hand appears too high, too low, or fails to return to its expected position, while the ride recorded by the device is plausible.
- Recorded-data error: the speed and distance in the ride itself are wrong, so the problem is not limited to hand positioning.
This distinction matters because the documented remedy for a display-only problem is hand recalibration in the OMATA Utility App. A ride file that is also wrong requires checks of GPS acquisition, operating sequence, environmental conditions, firmware, battery state, and eventually OMATA support. Do not assume that a visibly incorrect hand proves that the GPS track is bad.
A quick pre-ride check
- Take the unit outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
- Rotate the bezel to RIDE and wait for acquisition behavior to finish.
- Confirm that the hands return to their zero positions after the fix.
- Start riding without moving the bezel to STOP.
If the hands are still suspicious after this sequence, complete a ride or a short test route, then compare the physical display with the recorded file rather than trying random resets.

Obtain a clean GPS fix before every ride
OMATA speed and distance are GPS-derived. The official user guide’s instruction is: “Acquire GPS—Go outside and rotate bezel to RIDE Mode.” GPS acquisition is therefore a prerequisite, not an optional setup step.
What you should see during acquisition
While the device is searching, the speed hand aligns with the GPS mark and the time hand animates. When a GPS fix is obtained, all hands return to their zero positions. That return is the visual confirmation that the acquisition phase has completed. If you begin riding before that behavior finishes, the opening portion of the ride can lack a reliable position and speed solution.
Use an unobstructed starting location
Start outside rather than in a garage, under a substantial roof, between tall buildings, or under dense cover. The guide identifies GPS availability and topology as factors that affect operation. In practical terms, give the receiver an open view before judging accuracy. If your normal start is shielded, move to an open area and wait there for the fix.

The same documentation lists temperature, usage, and battery condition among factors that affect ride and standby times. Begin with adequate charge and use the unit within normal operating temperatures. A low battery or an unusually hot or cold device can complicate diagnosis because a short or interrupted recording may look like a distance error.
Keep the bezel in RIDE until the ride is over
Once the GPS fix is established, leave the bezel in RIDE. The documented behavior is automatic: the unit pauses when you stop and resumes recording after it obtains a new fix when you start again. You do not need to move the bezel for an ordinary traffic light, café stop, or other brief pause.

Why moving to STOP causes confusion
STOP is the end-of-ride position. Returning the bezel to STOP ends recording. If you switch to STOP during a break and later continue riding, you can create separate or incomplete recordings and an unexpectedly short distance. Finish the ride first, then rotate to STOP once you are ready to end it.
Correct operating sequence
- Before departure, go outdoors.
- Rotate the bezel to RIDE.
- Wait for the acquisition animation and the hands’ return to zero.
- Ride with the bezel left in RIDE.
- Let automatic pause handle stops.
- After the final stop, rotate the bezel to STOP to end recording.
Repeat this exact sequence on a short, familiar route when troubleshooting. A controlled ride makes it easier to decide whether the issue follows the device or was caused by the original start and stop sequence.
Use the OMATA Utility App to check and recalibrate the hands
Connect the device to the OMATA Utility App after the ride. OMATA states that the app can recalibrate the hands if their positions do not correspond to the recorded ride. This is the appropriate path for a display-only discrepancy; it is not evidence that the underlying GPS data has been corrected.
Signs that hand calibration is the likely problem
- The recorded route and distance look reasonable in the app, but the analog speed hand consistently reads high or low.
- The hand does not settle at its expected zero position after GPS acquisition.
- The hand error is repeatable across rides that began with a confirmed fix.
Recalibrate through the Utility App’s hand-calibration function, following the current on-screen prompts for your device. The available documentation does not establish a Classic-specific button combination or factory-reset sequence, so do not apply an OMATA One reset procedure unless OMATA explicitly confirms that it is valid for your Classic.
What recalibration can and cannot do
Calibration changes the relationship between the physical hand position and the value it is meant to display. It does not recreate missing GPS points, repair a truncated recording, or alter a distance that is already wrong in the ride file. Always inspect the file as well as the hands.

Export the ride as a FIT file and compare both readings
OMATA documents exporting a ride as a .FIT file over USB-C. The file gives you a practical reference for separating a display error from a recorded-data error.
Comparison procedure
- Connect the OMATA to the Utility App and review the ride summary.
- Export the same ride as a
.FITfile over USB-C. - Open the file in a compatible fitness-data viewer or import it into your normal analysis software.
- Compare the file’s recorded speed and distance with what the analog hands showed during the ride.
- Repeat the comparison with a second ride that began outdoors with a confirmed GPS fix.

The FIT comparison is especially useful when another cyclist’s computer appears to disagree with your hand. A second device can provide context, but the exported file is the direct record from your OMATA and should be the first reference for deciding whether the problem is mechanical display alignment or recorded data.
Do not pair a speed sensor as a presumed fix
OMATA’s firmware notice says the supported external protocols are ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy heart-rate monitors and power meters. It also states plainly: “We do not support speed sensors at all.” Pairing a wheel or hub speed sensor is therefore not a documented way to correct an OMATA speed or distance reading.
A speed sensor may work with a different cycling computer, but it should not be treated as an input that the OMATA can use to override its GPS-derived measurements. If your file is wrong, return to GPS acquisition, the RIDE/STOP sequence, environmental checks, and support rather than buying a sensor as a workaround.
Understand the published accuracy numbers
OMATA product documentation retrieved in 2026 lists 0.18 KPH (0.11 MPH) speed accuracy and 2.5 m (8 ft) distance accuracy. Those are manufacturer-stated figures, not an independent test of the Classic, and the available documentation does not provide a Classic-specific test protocol or separate Classic accuracy result.

Use the figures as a reference for the product documentation, not as a promise that every route will match a phone, another bike computer, or a mapped road length exactly. GPS availability, topology, temperature, usage, and battery condition are identified operating factors. A disagreement on a difficult start or a route with interruptions does not by itself prove a hardware defect.
Check firmware and app state without assuming a Classic-only procedure
Connect the device to the Utility App and note the firmware information it reports. The available firmware notice documents sensor support, including the explicit exclusion of speed sensors, but it does not establish a Classic-specific firmware-recovery or reset process. Do not flash firmware from another model or follow an undocumented button sequence.
Safe review sequence
- Record the current firmware version shown by the Utility App.
- Confirm that the app can connect and read the ride.
- Check whether the app offers an official update for your exact unit.
- Back up or export any rides you need before accepting an update.
- If the app reports an error or offers no compatible update, stop there and ask OMATA/SILCA support for model-specific instructions.
Updating software is not a substitute for acquiring GPS correctly. It is a later check after you have established whether the problem is display-only or present in the FIT data.

Battery and charging
Charge the unit adequately before a diagnostic ride. Battery condition is listed as a factor affecting operation and standby time. Inspect the charging connection and cable for a secure connection, but do not assume that a mount or cable is a direct correction for inaccurate GPS speed or distance. No available documentation identifies mounting hardware as a GPS-accuracy remedy.

Temperature
Let a device that has been stored in an unusually hot or cold place return to a normal operating temperature before testing. Record the conditions when the error occurs; a fault that appears only in one extreme is useful information for support.

Route and surroundings
Repeat the test outdoors on a route with an open start. Note whether the discrepancy occurs immediately, only after a stop, or throughout the ride. This observation helps separate an acquisition problem from a persistent recording problem without requiring you to change several variables at once.
A decision tree for common symptoms
The speed hand is wrong, but the distance file is normal
Connect to the Utility App, export the FIT file, and use the app’s hand-calibration function. Verify the result on a second ride that starts after a confirmed GPS fix. Escalate if calibration cannot hold or the file later becomes inaccurate.
The distance is too short and the ride began immediately
Repeat the ride while waiting outdoors in RIDE for the acquisition animation to finish and the hands to return to zero. Keep RIDE selected through every stop and use STOP only at the end. Compare the new FIT file with the first one.
The reading becomes wrong after a pause
Leave the bezel in RIDE and allow the unit to obtain a new fix when you resume. Moving to STOP during the pause ends the recording and can explain a missing section. If the bezel stayed in RIDE and the file still fails after a new fix, document the timing and contact support.
Both the hand and FIT file are wrong on repeated controlled rides
Confirm charge, normal temperature, open-sky acquisition, and current app/firmware information. Do not add a speed sensor or open the case. Persistent recorded-data errors should be handled by OMATA support through SILCA.
When to contact OMATA through SILCA
The official guide states that the OMATA One has no user-serviceable components and directs questions to OMATA. The current OMATA homepage identifies OMATA as part of SILCA, so use the current OMATA/SILCA support route rather than disassembling the instrument.
Information to include in a support request
- That your unit is an Omata Classic, including any serial or identifying information requested by support.
- The firmware version shown in the Utility App.
- Whether the hands returned to zero after an outdoor GPS acquisition.
- Whether the bezel stayed in RIDE for the entire ride.
- Whether the discrepancy appears in the FIT file, the analog display, or both.
- The approximate temperature, battery state, and route conditions.
- The affected FIT file and a concise description of when the error began.
These details let support distinguish a calibration issue from a GPS or recording fault and avoid sending you an incompatible procedure. Do not open the device while waiting for a response.
