Most Ghost image-upload failures occur in one of four places: the browser request, a reverse proxy such as NGINX, the Ghost process, or the configured image store. The quickest reliable fix is to reproduce the failure with a small JPEG or PNG, capture the HTTP status and both service logs, then change only the layer that rejected the request.
Ghost’s current documentation sets a default maximum image-upload size of 50 MB. Larger files need a matching limit at every proxy layer, while failures on small files usually point to filesystem permissions, an incorrect content path, a storage adapter, or a service configuration problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow a Ghost image upload reaches storage
When you choose an image in the Ghost editor, the request travels through a chain:
- Browser and Admin: the editor sends the image to Ghost’s upload endpoint.
- Reverse proxy: NGINX or another proxy may terminate TLS, enforce a request-size limit, and forward the request to Ghost.
- Ghost process: Ghost authenticates the request and passes the file to its storage layer.
- Storage: the active adapter writes the image to local disk or sends it to an external object-storage service.
A failure in an earlier layer prevents later layers from seeing the request. For example, a proxy that rejects an oversized body produces no Ghost storage error because Ghost never receives the file. Conversely, a Ghost write-permission error can occur even when NGINX accepts the request.

By default, Ghost stores uploaded images in the images directory under the configured content path. A conventional Ghost-CLI installation therefore uses /var/www/ghost/content/images, but Docker and custom installations can map that directory somewhere else.
Use the error signal to choose the first check
Record the exact status code, message, endpoint, Ghost version, deployment method, proxy, operating system, and active storage adapter before changing settings. The following patterns narrow the search:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Observed symptom | Most likely layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP 413 or a message about request size | Reverse proxy | Inspect client_max_body_size on every proxy handling the site. |
| Small files work but a large image fails | Proxy limit or an upstream limit | Compare the file size with each proxy’s configured body limit and reload or restart the affected proxy. |
| HTTP 403 or a Ghost message about writing a file | Filesystem ownership, mode, or path | Check the Ghost service user, directory traversal, and the configured content directory. |
| HTTP 500 with a storage or write error | Filesystem or storage adapter | Read the Ghost log at the failure time and verify the adapter destination and credentials. |
| Repeated HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects or an editor that never completes the request | Proxy protocol headers | Verify that TLS-terminating NGINX passes X-Forwarded-Proto: https. |
| Upload appears to succeed but the image URL is broken | Storage destination, public URL, or proxy routing | Check whether the file exists in the adapter’s destination and whether the generated URL is reachable in a new session. |
These are diagnostic starting points, not mutually exclusive categories. A proxy can accept a request while a storage adapter later rejects it, so confirm the conclusion in both logs.
Back up the publication before changing anything
Ownership, permissions, proxy configuration, and storage settings affect more than one image. Export or back up the publication before editing them. Ghost’s manual-backup guidance specifically includes the images/, files/, and media/ directories. Keep a copy outside the server so a mistaken recursive command does not remove your only recovery path.
- Note the current Ghost service user, content path, storage adapter, and proxy configuration.
- Save a copy of the files you plan to edit, such as the active NGINX server block and Ghost production configuration.
- Schedule changes during a quiet period if the site cannot tolerate a brief service restart.
Do not begin with a recursive ownership change or a blanket mode change. First identify the exact path that Ghost must write and the account running the Ghost process.
Step 1: Reproduce one controlled failure
Use a small, ordinary JPEG or PNG first. This separates a general upload problem from a size-specific problem and avoids filling a proxy’s temporary directory while you investigate.
- Open the Ghost editor and upload a small image that is comfortably below 50 MB.
- Repeat with the image that originally failed, if it is safe to do so.
- Write down the time of each attempt, the browser-visible message, and the HTTP status shown in the browser’s network panel or server access log.
- Capture the exact request endpoint and response body. Do not rely on a paraphrase such as “upload failed.”
- At the same time, watch the NGINX access and error logs and the Ghost log in the installation’s
content/logsdirectory.
If the small file succeeds and only the larger one fails, start at the proxy-size check. If the small file also fails, continue to the process, filesystem, and adapter checks instead of raising the upload limit blindly.

Step 2: Correct the reverse-proxy request limit
Understand Ghost’s 50 MB default
Ghost’s FAQ states that image uploads can be affected by a default maximum upload size of 50 MB. That limit must be accommodated by the proxy in front of Ghost. Ghost’s reverse-proxy example uses:
client_max_body_size 50m;
The value is a ceiling, not a target. Set it to a size appropriate for the server, publication, and available disk space. A higher limit allows larger request bodies to reach Ghost and can increase bandwidth, memory, temporary-file, and timeout pressure.
Find the active NGINX server block
Edit the server block that actually handles the Ghost hostname, not an unused template. Put client_max_body_size in the relevant server context, or in an included HTTP configuration that applies to that virtual host. If several proxies sit in front of Ghost, check each one; the smallest limit wins.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the active NGINX configuration for the Ghost site.
- Set a deliberate value, for example
client_max_body_size 50m;or a larger value justified by your publication’s needs. - Validate the configuration with your normal NGINX syntax check before restarting.
- Restart NGINX after saving the change:
sudo service nginx restart. - Retry the same test image and confirm that the access log no longer records a request-size rejection.
A 413 response, or an NGINX error stating that the request body is too large, means Ghost was not the component that rejected the file. Changing Ghost storage permissions will not correct that response.
Preserve the original protocol behind TLS termination
When NGINX terminates HTTPS and forwards traffic to Ghost, pass the original protocol as X-Forwarded-Proto: https. Ghost uses this information when constructing secure URLs and redirects. An incorrect value can create an HTTPS redirect loop that makes an upload appear stuck even though the file itself is valid.
After changing this header, test both the Admin page and a fresh upload in a private browser window. A cached redirect can obscure whether the proxy change worked.
Step 3: Repair Ghost’s identity and filesystem access
Confirm which account runs Ghost
Ghost-CLI creates a system user and group named ghost for the Ghost process. Non-root Ghost-CLI installations normally use directory mode 775 and file mode 664; Ghost-CLI also provides doctor hooks that enforce expected Linux permissions.

Do not assume those values apply to a container or a custom service. First identify the account in the service definition or container configuration, then compare it with the owner of the configured content path.
Check the complete path, not just the final directory
Ghost needs to traverse every parent directory and write to the destination directory. For the conventional local store, inspect the content path and its images subdirectory, commonly /var/www/ghost/content/images. A directory can have a writable mode while a parent directory blocks traversal, producing the same user-visible failure.
- Verify that the configured content path is the path you are inspecting.
- Verify that the service account can traverse each parent directory.
- Verify that the target
imagesdirectory exists and is writable by that account. - Check free disk space and inode availability; a full filesystem can look like a permission or storage failure.
Use a narrow ownership repair
If a backup exists and you have confirmed that the local content tree should belong to Ghost, restore ownership on the content directory rather than changing the entire server:
sudo chown -R ghost:ghost content
Run the command from the Ghost installation directory, or replace content with the verified absolute content path. A recursive command on the wrong directory can damage unrelated files. After an ownership repair, restart Ghost with:
ghost restart
Ghost-CLI’s documented permission hooks and diagnostic commands can help restore the expected 775 directory and 664 file defaults. Use those tools on the identified installation rather than applying chmod -R 777. World-writable content removes an important security boundary and does not solve a wrong path, a wrong service account, or an unavailable external adapter.
Step 4: Verify the active storage adapter
Local-file storage
The default local-file-store writes uploaded images to the local filesystem. Confirm that the production configuration points to the content path you inspected and that the process can write there. If the file appears on disk but its public URL fails, investigate URL generation and proxy routing separately from write access.
External storage adapters
Ghost’s storage layer handles images uploaded from Admin, the API, and importer ZIP files. The active adapter may instead send files to an S3-compatible service, Cloudinary, Google Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2, BunnyCDN, or another supported destination. In that case, local directory permissions alone cannot fix the upload.

Check the production configuration for:
- The adapter name and whether its package is installed in the same Ghost environment that is running.
- Access credentials, bucket or container name, region or endpoint, and any required public URL settings.
- Network reachability from the Ghost process, including DNS and outbound firewall rules.
- Write permission at the remote destination and read permission for the URL Ghost returns.
- Container environment variables and secret mounts if Ghost runs in Docker.
Apply configuration changes to the environment that actually serves production, then restart Ghost. An adapter can be installed on the host while missing inside a container, or credentials can exist in a shell but not in the service manager’s environment.
Step 5: Read NGINX and Ghost logs together
Look at entries generated at the exact second of the failed upload. Ghost-CLI sites keep Ghost logs under the installation’s content/logs directory. Pair the Ghost entry with the NGINX access and error entries for the same request.
What common patterns mean
- Only NGINX records the request, with a 413 or body-size message: the proxy rejected the body before Ghost received it. Adjust the active proxy limit and restart that proxy.
- NGINX forwards the request and Ghost returns a write or permission error: inspect the service identity, content path, directory traversal, disk capacity, and local adapter.
- Ghost returns 500 while an external adapter reports authentication, endpoint, or network errors: fix the adapter configuration or remote permission rather than changing local modes.
- Requests bounce between HTTP and HTTPS: inspect TLS termination and the forwarded-protocol header.
- NGINX reports a temporary-file permission error: investigate NGINX’s temporary upload directory and its service account in addition to Ghost’s content directory. A community report documents this pattern; treat it as a useful example, not a universal diagnosis.
The distinction matters because a proxy rejection and a Ghost filesystem failure occur at different stages and require different restarts. Raising every limit or changing every owner obscures the original cause.
Step 6: Apply the smallest safe repair
Once the logs identify the failing layer, use this sequence:
- Back up: archive the publication’s
images/,files/, andmedia/directories and preserve the current configuration. - Retest with a small image: keep a known-good JPEG or PNG for comparison.
- Change one layer: edit the proxy body limit, repair the verified content ownership, or correct the active adapter settings, but do not combine unrelated changes.
- Restart only the affected service: use
sudo service nginx restartafter NGINX edits andghost restartafter Ghost configuration or ownership repairs. - Repeat the original test: use the same failing image so the result is comparable.
- Check the logs again: confirm that the original error class disappeared rather than merely changing into a different failure.
If a change produces a new error, restore the saved configuration and return to the log evidence. A controlled rollback is safer than stacking additional speculative fixes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Docker and custom deployments need path-specific checks
Do not copy Ghost-CLI paths or ownership commands into a container without checking the deployment. The host path may be mounted at a different location inside the container, and the process may run under a numeric UID rather than a user named ghost.
- Inspect the container’s volume mount and identify where the persistent content directory appears inside the container.
- Check the UID and GID of the Ghost process in the running container.
- Confirm that the mount is writable and persists across container recreation.
- Check whether NGINX runs on the host, in another container, or behind an additional load balancer; each layer can impose its own request limit.
- Confirm that adapter credentials are present in the production container, not only in the host shell.
For a custom systemd or manually installed Ghost service, use the service definition to identify the working directory, user, environment file, and content path. The correct repair is tied to those values, not to a standard Ghost-CLI layout.

A successful HTTP response is not the final check. Complete all of these tests:
Recommended Free Tools
- Upload a small JPEG or PNG and confirm that it appears in the editor.
- Upload the previously failing file, if its size and format are acceptable for your policy.
- Open the generated image URL in a new browser session or private window.
- Refresh the post and confirm that the image remains attached after the editor reloads.
- Check the storage destination: the expected local file should exist, or the external adapter should show the object.
- Restart the affected service and repeat one upload to verify that the fix survives a restart.
- Review logs for new warnings, not just the absence of a browser error.
If the editor shows an image but the public URL fails, the write path is working; focus on public routing, URL configuration, CDN behavior, or remote read permissions. If the file disappears after a restart or container replacement, the storage mount or adapter persistence is the problem.
Choose a durable operating approach
Keep local storage when simplicity is the priority
Local-file storage has the fewest moving parts: one process, one content directory, and one backup target. It is practical for a single server when disk capacity, backups, and permissions are actively managed. Its risks are tied to that server’s disk failure, growth limits, and deployment changes.
Use an external adapter when durability or scaling justifies it
Object or media storage can separate uploaded assets from the Ghost server and make replacement or horizontal scaling easier. It also introduces credentials, network availability, endpoint configuration, remote permissions, and adapter-maintenance dependencies. Document those dependencies and test restore and URL access before relying on the arrangement.
Set limits with a resource plan
Do not increase the proxy limit simply because one upload failed. Estimate image sizes, concurrent uploads, available disk or temporary space, backup capacity, and request timeouts. A limit larger than the publication can safely handle turns an editor convenience into a denial-of-service and storage risk.

When to stop and escalate
Pause changes and obtain a fuller system review if the error alternates between layers, the content path is unknown, the server is out of disk space, or a storage migration is in progress. Preserve the timestamped logs and the configuration snapshot. A clear record of the request status, endpoint, deployment method, service account, adapter, and exact error lets an administrator or hosting engineer reproduce the issue without guessing.
The reliable method is always the same: identify the layer that rejected the upload, make the narrowest documented change at that layer, restart only what changed, and verify both editor behavior and the resulting public image URL.
