Start by identifying which symptom you have: a faint image left by static content, flicker limited to Windows or an application, or a completely black display. Check whether the monitor’s own on-screen menu appears, then test power, input, cables, the computer, and Windows settings in that order. OLED maintenance controls and timings vary by model, so use the monitor’s manual before running any pixel- or panel-refresh function.

Identify the symptom before changing settings

OLED problems that look similar require different fixes. A logo or taskbar outline that remains after the picture changes is possible image retention. Rapid brightness changes or flashing may be Windows-driver or application flicker. A black screen is usually a power, input, cable, graphics-output, display-mode, or hardware-isolation problem.

What you see First question Most useful next test
Faint logo, menu, taskbar, or game HUD remains Does it fade when you display changing content? Follow the model’s OLED cleaning or pixel-refresh procedure.
Image flashes or brightness pulses Does the monitor’s own menu flicker? Compare Task Manager with the rest of Windows.
Entire screen is black Is the monitor powered and on the correct input? Reseat connections, try another cable or port, and test another system.
Symptom appears before Windows loads Does it occur in the monitor menu or firmware screen? Concentrate on the monitor, cable, input, and graphics hardware rather than Windows.

The monitor’s menu is an important boundary test. If the menu is visible while the computer picture is not, the panel can produce an image and the computer-side signal path deserves attention. If the menu itself is missing, flickers, or is also black, use the manufacturer’s hardware-support procedure.

Fix a faint retained image or mark

Decide whether it is temporary retention

Static taskbars, icons, scoreboards, and game menus can leave a temporary after-image when they remain in one position for a long time. LG’s monitor guidance also notes that moving the display or making a substantial room-temperature change can produce temporary marks. Change to varied full-screen content and observe whether the mark weakens; do not label it permanent burn-in solely because it is visible immediately after changing windows.

Permanent retention is possible. Dell’s guidance for specified Alienware OLED models distinguishes routine pixel maintenance from a longer panel-maintenance operation, but neither process is a universal cure for every panel or every mark.

Run the cleaning function named in your manual

  1. Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD).
  2. Find the OLED-care, panel-care, or pixel-maintenance section. On cited LG models this is OLED Care.
  3. Choose Image Cleaning on an LG model that provides that control, and confirm the prompt. Keep the monitor connected to power and do not interrupt the cycle.
  4. Wait for the monitor to finish and then display varied content again. Menu names and behavior differ by model, so use the exact manual for your screen.

LG says Image Cleaning may run automatically when the monitor enters power-saving mode or is turned off after more than four hours of use since its previous cleaning. That trigger is specific to the cited LG guidance; it is not a universal OLED schedule.

Understand short and long refresh cycles

Dell’s Alienware instructions describe two different operations on specified models:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Operation Approximate duration in Dell’s cited guidance How to interpret it
Pixel Refresh About 6–8 minutes A shorter maintenance cycle intended for routine pixel compensation.
Panel Refresh About one hour A longer operation with model-specific conditions and triggers.

Those times apply to the specified Alienware instructions, not to all OLED gaming monitors. Do not substitute a different model’s timing or force a panel refresh more often than the manufacturer recommends. Interrupting power during a maintenance cycle can leave the process incomplete.

Check for model-specific normal features

Samsung’s US support guidance says some 2022 and 2023 OLED monitors can show an edge row or column that is part of the panel’s construction. It also advises checking whether Pixel Shift is enabled. Treat an edge line as normal only when your exact model and generation are covered by that guidance; a new line, a line that expands, or a mark outside the documented design should be reported to Samsung support.

Know when to stop repeating cleaning cycles

  • The mark remains unchanged after the manufacturer’s documented cleaning procedure.
  • The mark is visible in the monitor’s own menu or with no video cable attached.
  • New lines, color patches, or areas of non-uniform brightness appear.
  • The monitor reports a maintenance error or cannot complete its cycle.

At that point, record the model, firmware version, purchase region, and a photograph showing the mark on a neutral background. LG directs users with unresolved marks to its support team or a technician. Dell’s maintenance and warranty terms are model-specific, so use the support path for the exact display rather than applying a generic burn-in claim.

Troubleshoot flicker in Windows

Use Task Manager as a diagnostic comparison

On Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc while the flicker is occurring. Compare the Task Manager window with the rest of the screen:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If Task Manager flickers along with everything else, Microsoft identifies the display driver as the more likely direction to investigate.
  • If Task Manager stays steady while other windows flicker, an incompatible application is a stronger possibility.

This is a troubleshooting clue, not proof that the OLED panel is healthy or defective. A game, browser, overlay, variable-refresh setting, or driver can expose a problem that does not appear in a static desktop window.

Reset the graphics driver

  1. Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B.
  2. Wait for a brief beep or screen flash, which Microsoft says may indicate that the graphics driver reset succeeded.
  3. Reproduce the flicker in the same application or game.

If the reset helps only temporarily, continue with driver or application troubleshooting rather than repeatedly resetting the driver.

Update, roll back, or remove the likely cause

  • Install the current graphics driver supplied for your GPU and Windows version.
  • If flicker began immediately after a driver update, roll the driver back from Device Manager or the GPU vendor’s installer when that option is available.
  • If only one application flickers while Task Manager remains stable, update that application, disable its hardware acceleration or overlay features for a test, or uninstall it temporarily.
  • Restart after a driver change and test at the monitor’s normal resolution and refresh rate before adding overclocking or extra display features.

Do not treat a successful driver reset as a panel diagnosis. If the monitor’s OSD flickers, the issue appears on multiple computers, or it continues after computer-side checks, follow the display manufacturer’s model-specific support route.

Fix a black screen or “no signal” condition

Start with power and input selection

  1. Confirm that the monitor’s power indicator is on and that the power cable is fully seated at the monitor and outlet.
  2. Press the monitor’s menu button. If the OSD appears, verify that the selected input matches the connected port, such as HDMI or DisplayPort.
  3. Disconnect docks, adapters, KVM switches, and other accessories for the first test when practical. Connect the computer directly to the monitor.
  4. Secure the video cable at both ends. Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance specifically says to ensure HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA cables are securely connected.

Isolate the cable, port, monitor, and computer

Test What to do What the result suggests
Different cable Use a known-good HDMI or DisplayPort cable that matches both devices. If the picture returns, the original cable or its connection is suspect.
Different output port Try another GPU output or another monitor input, then select that input in the OSD. A single failed port or incorrect input becomes more likely.
Another computer or console Connect the monitor to a second system without the dock or adapter. A working picture shifts suspicion toward the original computer or its driver.
Another display Connect the original computer to a known-working display. If that display is also black, investigate the computer, GPU, or Windows output.

Microsoft recommends trying another cable or system as part of this isolation process. Change one variable at a time and note the result; replacing several components simultaneously makes the cause harder to identify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset Windows display output

  1. Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. Listen for a beep or watch for a brief flicker.
  2. Press Windows+P to open the projection menu.
  3. Select PC screen only for a direct monitor test, or choose Duplicate if you need to confirm that Windows is sending an image to more than one display.
  4. If the black screen started after a graphics-driver update, use the driver’s rollback option where available, then restart.

If Windows is visible on another display, check Settings > System > Display and choose the OLED monitor, its native resolution, and a refresh rate supported by both the monitor and cable. Return to higher refresh rates only after a stable image is established.

When the screen is black before Windows

If no manufacturer logo, firmware screen, or OSD appears, Windows shortcuts cannot repair the underlying signal path. Test power, input, cable, alternate ports, and another system. If the monitor remains unable to show its own menu, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider with the model and serial information.

Choose a replacement cable only when testing points to it

A new cable is justified when reseating, changing ports, or testing another system makes the cable the remaining variable. Match the connector type on both ends and the bandwidth required by the chosen resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and adaptive-sync features. A cable that works at 60 Hz may not reliably carry a higher-refresh OLED gaming signal.

  • Use DisplayPort when both devices provide it and your setup requires DisplayPort-specific features.
  • Use HDMI when the monitor and computer or console use HDMI; verify the required HDMI specification for your target mode.
  • A cable cannot remove image retention and cannot repair a defective OLED panel.
  • If the same cable works with another display at the same mode, continue testing the monitor input or source device before buying more cables.

Use a combined decision sequence when symptoms overlap

Some failures present as both flicker and black screens, or as a retained mark that is mistaken for a dead pixel. Use this order so each test answers a separate question:

  1. Check the OSD: determine whether the monitor can generate its own menu.
  2. Check timing: note whether the symptom appears before Windows loads or only after login.
  3. Change content: for a mark, display varied content and see whether the shape fades; for flicker, observe a static OSD and a Windows application separately.
  4. Change the signal path: reseat the cable, select the correct input, and test another cable and port.
  5. Change the source: connect another computer or test the computer on another display.
  6. Apply Windows fixes: use the graphics-driver reset, Windows+P, and an update or rollback only when the OSD and cabling tests point to the computer side.
  7. Escalate with evidence: provide the manufacturer with the model, firmware, input used, tested cables and systems, and whether the OSD was affected.

Prevent repeat problems without overusing maintenance cycles

  • Allow the monitor to enter its normal power-saving state instead of leaving a static desktop or game menu displayed for many hours.
  • Keep taskbars, fixed overlays, and HUD elements from remaining unchanged when the display is unattended.
  • Leave the manufacturer’s pixel-shift or OLED-care feature enabled unless the manual gives a specific reason to disable it.
  • Run Image Cleaning, Pixel Refresh, or Panel Refresh only as the model’s instructions describe; these controls are not interchangeable across brands or generations.
  • Avoid unplugging the monitor during an automatic or manually started maintenance operation.

Common mistakes that slow diagnosis

  • Calling every mark burn-in: first display changing content and run only the maintenance procedure documented for your model.
  • Running a long refresh repeatedly: Dell’s approximately one-hour Panel Refresh is for specified Alienware models and conditions; it is not a generic cure.
  • Buying a cable first: test the existing cable, another port, and another source before spending money. A replacement must support the required resolution and refresh rate.
  • Changing many variables at once: replacing the cable, driver, adapter, and monitor settings together prevents you from identifying the cause.
  • Using Windows shortcuts when the OSD is absent: a monitor that cannot show its own menu needs power, input, cable, hardware, or manufacturer-support testing.

When to contact the manufacturer

Contact the monitor maker when a documented cleaning cycle does not change a persistent mark, the OSD itself is affected, the display fails with multiple known-good cables and systems, or a maintenance cycle will not complete. Include the exact model and region because support procedures, menu labels, refresh timings, and warranty terms can differ.

LG’s monitor troubleshooting page, dated August 13, 2026, warns that menu names vary by model and directs unresolved marks to support or a technician. Dell’s article, last modified January 30, 2026, applies its Pixel Refresh and Panel Refresh descriptions to specified Alienware products. Samsung’s guidance is US-specific and its edge-row explanation is limited to certain 2022 and 2023 OLED monitors. Microsoft’s Windows articles cover Windows 10 and 11; localized instructions may use different labels.

Do not describe a mark as guaranteed burn-in, a flicker as a failed panel, or a black screen as a bad cable until the OSD, cable, port, and alternate-system tests support that conclusion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell temporary image retention from permanent burn-in?

Display varied full-screen content and observe whether the faint logo, taskbar, or game menu weakens. Static content and even a substantial temperature change can produce temporary marks. If the mark remains after the exact cleaning procedure in your manual, contact the manufacturer rather than assuming another refresh cycle will cure it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does an OLED pixel refresh take?

Timing is model-specific. Dell’s cited Alienware guidance lists approximately 6–8 minutes for Pixel Refresh and about one hour for Panel Refresh on specified models. Do not apply those durations to another brand or interrupt a maintenance cycle.

Why does my OLED monitor flicker only in one program?

Open Task Manager while the flicker occurs. If Task Manager stays steady while the application flickers, Microsoft’s guidance points toward an incompatible application. Update or temporarily remove the application and test its hardware-acceleration or overlay settings.

What should I do if the monitor is black but its menu works?

Verify the selected input, reseat the cable, disconnect docks or adapters, and test another cable, port, or computer. If the monitor menu works, the panel can produce an image and the computer-side signal path is the next area to isolate.

What if the monitor’s own menu is also black or flickers?

Windows driver shortcuts cannot establish that the panel is healthy. Test power, the input, alternate cables and ports, and another system. If the OSD still fails, use the manufacturer’s model-specific support or service route.

Should I buy a new HDMI or DisplayPort cable?

Only after testing indicates the cable or connection is the remaining variable. Match the connector and the bandwidth required by your resolution, refresh rate, color depth, and adaptive-sync features. A cable will not fix image retention or a defective panel.

The Bottom Line

Use the symptom and the monitor’s OSD to choose the path: model-specific OLED cleaning for a changing-content after-image, Task Manager and driver/application checks for Windows flicker, and power, input, cable, port, and alternate-system isolation for a black screen. Refresh timings and normal panel features differ by model, so stop repeating generic cycles and contact the manufacturer when the documented procedure or isolation tests do not resolve the problem.
