Installing an SSL certificate is only one part of enabling HTTPS. The browser must reach the right server on TCP port 443, that server must select a certificate whose names match the requested hostname, it must send the complete intermediate chain, and every proxy, redirect, and application URL must agree on HTTPS. Diagnose those dependencies in order: identify the exact browser error, verify DNS and port 443, inspect the certificate actually being served, check SNI and virtual-host selection, align proxy and origin encryption, then fix redirect conflicts or mixed content.
Start with the exact symptom
Do not replace the certificate again until you know which layer is failing. Different browser messages point to different causes.

Write down the precise hostname, including whether it is the apex name, www, or a subdomain. A certificate that works for www.example.com does not automatically cover example.com, and a wildcard for *.example.com does not cover the apex or a deeper name such as api.dev.example.com.
1. Confirm DNS and port 443 before changing TLS
Resolve every public hostname
Check the address that users actually reach. From a terminal, run commands such as:

nslookup example.comThe returned IPv4 and IPv6 addresses must belong to the intended endpoint. An old AAAA record can send some visitors to a server where the certificate was never installed, while IPv4 visitors appear to work. Check the apex, www, and each important subdomain separately. If a reverse proxy or DNS-based load balancer is in use, determine whether the name resolves to the proxy or directly to the origin.
Test the HTTPS listener
Verify that a firewall, security group, hosting panel, or network appliance permits inbound TCP 443. A basic reachability test is:

A connection refusal means that nothing is listening on 443 at that address, or a firewall is actively rejecting it. If the connection succeeds but the certificate is wrong, continue with certificate and SNI checks.
Test IPv4 and IPv6 independently when both exist:

curl -6 -Iv https://example.com/These tests also reveal the HTTP status and redirect sequence. Use the same hostname that appears in the browser; testing an IP address changes SNI and can select a different virtual host.
2. Inspect the certificate the server really presents
Check names, dates, issuer, and key usage
In the browser, open the lock or warning icon, view the connection or certificate details, and inspect the subject alternative names (SANs). The exact hostname in the address bar must appear in the SAN list. Also check the validity period, issuer, and whether the certificate is intended for server authentication.

openssl s_client -connect example.com:443 -servername example.com -showcerts </dev/nullLook at the first certificate returned (the leaf certificate), its SAN entries, the issuer, and the verification result. The -servername option is essential because it sends SNI, the hostname indication used by a multi-site server to choose a certificate.

Test SNI and virtual-host selection
On a server hosting several sites, the listener can be healthy while the wrong site’s certificate is selected. This happens when the requested name is missing from the TLS server block, the default server is catching the request, or the proxy forwards a different host name.
Compare the result for each name:

openssl s_client -connect www.example.com:443 -servername www.example.com </dev/null 2>/dev/null | openssl x509 -noout -subject -issuer -dates -ext subjectAltNameIf one command shows a default or unrelated certificate, correct the virtual-host mapping and reload the server. Do not solve a name mismatch by asking users to ignore the warning; browsers will continue to treat the connection as untrusted.
3. Install and send the complete certificate chain
A server normally needs the leaf certificate plus every intermediate certificate required to connect it to a trusted root. The root certificate is generally already present in the browser or operating system and is not normally sent by the server. Sending only the leaf can produce trust errors even when the certificate itself is valid.

For Nginx, point ssl_certificate at a file containing the leaf certificate followed by the intermediate certificates in the order supplied by the certificate authority. Keep the private key in the separate key file:

}The file name is not important; its contents and order are. After editing, validate and reload:
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginxNginx documentation specifically recommends using OpenSSL to verify that the server sends the complete chain. Re-run the openssl s_client -showcerts command and count the certificates returned.
Other web servers and control panels
Apache, managed hosting panels, and application servers use different labels, but the requirement is the same: select the full-chain certificate for the site, not a leaf-only file, and select the matching private key. If the panel offers separate fields for certificate, private key, and CA bundle, paste the intermediate bundle into the CA-bundle field. Save, restart or reload the service, and inspect the live endpoint rather than trusting a configuration preview.

Do not paste a private key into a public certificate field, commit it to a repository, or email it in a support ticket. Restrict its filesystem permissions and replace the certificate and key if the key has been exposed.
4. Make the hostname, SNI, and virtual host agree
Three names must line up:
- The hostname the visitor enters.
- The hostname sent in SNI during the TLS handshake.
- The host name used by the HTTP virtual host or reverse proxy after the handshake.
For a direct connection, configure the site for every name you intend to serve and install a certificate covering all of them. Decide whether the apex redirects to www or the reverse, then configure that destination deliberately. For a proxy, preserve the original host header unless your architecture intentionally maps it to an internal name; an accidental rewrite can select the default certificate.
After changing a virtual-host file, perform a configuration test, reload the service, and retest each name with SNI. A browser may retain an earlier connection, so use a new private window or close existing connections while validating.
5. Align reverse-proxy and origin TLS
When a CDN or reverse proxy sits in front of the server, there are two TLS connections: browser-to-edge and edge-to-origin. An edge certificate can be perfectly valid while the origin connection is broken.

In Full (strict), Cloudflare error 526 means Cloudflare cannot verify the SSL certificate on the origin server. Check the origin certificate’s SANs, expiration, intermediate chain, and the certificate selected by SNI from the edge’s request. Testing the origin with a laptop is not always equivalent: the edge may connect using a different hostname or address.
Do not leave a weaker mode enabled as a permanent substitute for repairing the origin. Use it only as a controlled diagnostic or temporary recovery measure, then return to strict validation.
6. Eliminate redirect loops
A redirect loop usually means the edge and origin disagree about whether the current request is HTTP or HTTPS. For example, an edge can receive HTTPS from the browser, connect to an origin over HTTP, and receive an origin rule that redirects HTTP to HTTPS. The edge repeats the same HTTP origin request, producing an endless cycle.

Trace the chain
curl -IL https://example.com/Record every status code and Location value. A healthy canonical redirect normally ends at a 200 response (or an expected application response) after a finite number of redirects. A loop that alternates between two URLs, ports, or schemes identifies the conflicting rules.
Choose one owner for each redirect
- Let the edge perform the public HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect and configure the origin to understand the forwarded HTTPS state; or
- Use end-to-end HTTPS and let the origin perform the redirect after the edge connects securely; or
- Use a single application-level canonical redirect while disabling duplicate rules in the proxy and web server.
Cloudflare’s Always Use HTTPS setting only redirects visitors; it does not repair certificate validation. Ensure the origin mode and redirect policy are compatible, and configure the application to trust the proxy’s documented scheme header rather than guessing from the local connection.
7. Fix “not fully secure” mixed-content warnings
Mixed content is separate from certificate validation. The page itself may be delivered over HTTPS while it requests an image, stylesheet, JavaScript file, font, iframe, WebSocket, or API endpoint over HTTP. Browsers may block active content and warn about passive content.
Find every insecure request
- Open the page over HTTPS.
- Open Developer Tools and select the Console and Network panels.
- Reload with the Network panel recording.
- Filter for
http://requests and note the source file, template, or database field that generated each URL.
Change application references
Update hard-coded URLs, CMS settings, image fields, API base URLs, canonical tags, and sitemap entries to HTTPS. Prefer root-relative paths such as /assets/app.css for same-origin resources. For third-party resources, confirm that the provider supports HTTPS before changing the URL. Check CSS files as well as HTML: background images and imported fonts are common hidden sources.
Automatic HTTPS rewriting at a proxy can help with eligible resources, but it cannot make an HTTP-only third-party service secure and it does not replace correcting stored URLs. Test forms, checkout flows, embedded media, service workers, and API calls after the change.

Do not stop when one browser window shows a lock. Test the combinations your architecture exposes.

Use curl -I for headers and openssl s_client for the certificate. Repeat after cache expiration or a configuration reload when a proxy caches redirects. Keep a short change record containing the final SAN list, chain files, TLS mode, redirect owner, and tested hostnames; it makes the next renewal safer.

Common failure scenarios and the precise fix
The certificate was installed, but the browser shows an unrelated certificate
DNS may point to another server, or SNI may be selecting the default virtual host. Compare the resolved address with the intended host, then inspect the certificate with the correct -servername value. Correct DNS or the virtual-host mapping and reload.
Only some devices report “untrusted”
This commonly indicates a missing intermediate certificate or an outdated trust store. First fix the server’s full chain; then update affected operating systems and browsers. Do not assume that because one modern browser builds the chain, every client will.
HTTP works, but HTTPS times out
Port 80 reachability does not prove that port 443 is open. Check the 443 listener, firewall rules, load-balancer listener, security group, and IPv6 path. Install the certificate only after the TLS listener is reachable.
Cloudflare reports 526 after enabling Full (strict)
Inspect the certificate at the origin, not only the edge certificate. Ensure the origin certificate covers the name Cloudflare uses, is within its validity period, and is accompanied by the intermediates. Verify that the correct origin virtual host is selected by SNI, then retest before leaving strict mode enabled.
The lock appears, but scripts fail
The certificate is probably valid and the remaining issue is mixed content or a blocked cross-origin request. Use the browser console to identify each URL, migrate it to HTTPS, and verify the remote server’s certificate and CORS policy.
Prevent the problem at the next renewal
- List every hostname, including redirects, APIs, mail-related web endpoints, and staging names that are publicly exposed.
- Automate certificate renewal, but also automate deployment of the full-chain file and a safe web-server reload.
- Monitor the certificate served from outside your network, checking expiry, SAN coverage, issuer, and chain.
- Monitor both IPv4 and IPv6 endpoints when both DNS record types exist.
- Document whether TLS terminates at the edge, the origin, or both, and which layer owns redirects.
- Keep a staging or maintenance procedure for testing a renewed certificate before switching all traffic.
- After every renewal or proxy change, test apex,
www, subdomains, direct origin access where applicable, and representative application pages.
The reliable fix is not “install SSL again.” It is a consistent path from the requested hostname to the intended endpoint, through a matching certificate and complete chain, across correctly selected SNI and virtual hosts, with proxy encryption and redirects that agree, and with all page resources addressed over HTTPS.
