Most WordPress .htaccess failures can be repaired safely by backing up the file, temporarily renaming it to isolate the error, and then regenerating the rewrite rules from Settings > Permalinks. A 500 error usually points to invalid Apache directives or a corrupted file; pretty-permalink 404s require checking the rewrite block, Apache’s mod_rewrite, and file permissions.
What the WordPress .htaccess file does
.htaccess is Apache’s per-directory configuration file. A WordPress installation normally uses the copy in its document root to route friendly URLs such as /about/ or /2026/10/example-post/ through index.php. Those rewrite rules let WordPress decide which page, post, archive, or other request should be displayed.
The file is a hidden dotfile, so many FTP clients and file managers do not show it until hidden-file display is enabled. It may also contain directives added by a security, caching, redirect, or performance plugin. Keep those non-WordPress directives when replacing the standard block unless testing shows that one of them is the cause.
WordPress documentation identifies a corrupted .htaccess file as the most likely cause of some HTTP 500 errors. The file matters only on an Apache HTTP Server setup that permits per-directory overrides. An nginx or IIS server uses a different configuration mechanism, so editing a WordPress-style .htaccess cannot repair server-level routing there.

Prepare before changing anything
Make a restorable copy
Download the site-root .htaccess through SFTP, FTP, or the hosting control panel’s file manager. If downloading is unavailable, copy its complete contents into a plain-text file and record the original filename. Do not overwrite the only copy while experimenting. A backup lets you restore custom redirects, security rules, and cache directives that are not part of WordPress’s generated section.
Confirm where the file belongs
For a normal single-site installation, the file is in the same directory as wp-admin, wp-includes, and wp-content. A WordPress installation in a subdirectory has its own document-root path and requires a matching rewrite base. Editing a similarly named file in a parent directory can leave the actual site unchanged.

Identify the web server and access you have
- Use the host’s documentation or support channel to determine whether the site runs Apache, nginx, IIS, or a managed hybrid stack.
- Ensure you can reach the files with SFTP, FTP, or the host file manager before starting a dashboard-only repair.
- If the site is managed and Apache configuration is controlled by the provider, do not change server-wide settings yourself; ask the provider to verify overrides and rewrite support.
Fix an HTTP 500 error caused by .htaccess
A 500 Internal Server Error that appears immediately after an edit is a strong signal that Apache cannot parse a directive or is refusing an option. The quickest safe test is to take the file out of service without deleting it.
- Open the site’s document-root directory with SFTP, FTP, or the host file manager.
- Rename
.htaccessto a temporary name such as.htaccess_old. Keep the leading dot off the temporary suffix so you can distinguish it from the active file. - Load the home page, an administrative URL, and one previously failing URL in a private browser window. Also test after clearing any host or page-cache layer that could be serving an old response.
- If the 500 error disappears, leave the renamed copy untouched and proceed to regenerate clean rules. Do not copy the entire old file back into place.
- If the 500 remains, the fault is elsewhere. Check the Apache and PHP error logs supplied by the host, disable the most recently changed plugin or theme if you still have a safe recovery route, and contact the host when the logs point to a server restriction.
Renaming is preferable to deletion because it preserves evidence and gives you a rollback copy. WordPress’s documented wording is: “The most likely issue is a corrupted .htaccess file.” That diagnosis applies especially when the failure begins directly after a manual or plugin-generated edit.
Regenerate WordPress rewrite rules from the dashboard
When the site loads after the temporary rename, let WordPress create a fresh rule set rather than reconstructing every directive by hand.

- Sign in to WordPress administration.
- Open Settings > Permalinks.
- Review the current permalink structure, then click Save Changes. Saving the existing selection is sufficient; you do not need to choose a different structure.
- Return to the site and test the home page, a post, a page, an archive, and the login screen.
Simply visiting the Permalinks screen triggers a rewrite-rule flush. If the directory is writable, WordPress writes a new .htaccess automatically. If the screen displays a warning that the file is not writable, use the manual method below and then repeat the tests.

Install the standard single-site rule block manually
When WordPress cannot write the file, copy the rewrite block shown on the Permalinks screen into the active site-root .htaccess. For a root-level single-site installation, the baseline published by WordPress is:

Do not add Markdown fences, smart quotes, or invisible formatting from a rich-text editor. Save as plain text with the exact filename .htaccess.
The RewriteBase / line above is correct for a root installation. It is not automatically correct for a site installed at a path such as /blog/; use the exact block WordPress displays for that installation instead.

Repair pretty-permalink 404 errors
If the home page works but post and page URLs return 404, the request is usually not reaching WordPress’s front controller. Work through these checks in order.
Verify that the rewrite block exists
Open the active root .htaccess and look for the WordPress markers and rules. If the file is missing, regenerate it from Settings > Permalinks or insert the displayed block manually. A blank file, a block copied from another installation, or a rule that points to the wrong directory can produce the same symptom.
Confirm Apache mod_rewrite
Apache’s mod_rewrite module is required for WordPress pretty permalinks. Ask the host to confirm that the module is loaded and that overrides are allowed for the site directory. If the module is disabled, no amount of editing the WordPress block will make friendly URLs work; the server configuration must be corrected by someone with administrator access.
Flush rules after structural changes
After changing the permalink structure, moving the installation, or replacing the file, open Settings > Permalinks and save once. Test a newly published post as well as an older URL to distinguish a general rewrite failure from a stale cache or a redirect specific to one path.

The standard conditions exclude requests that already map to a physical file or directory. A directory with the same name as a desired page, or a manually created file that intercepts a URL, can therefore behave differently from other permalinks. Remove or rename unintended conflicting paths only after confirming they are not used by the application.

Resolve “.htaccess is not writable” warnings
WordPress needs write access to the site-root file when it is expected to update rewrite rules automatically. A warning can result from restrictive permissions, the wrong owner, a read-only filesystem, or a host policy that blocks overrides.
- Use the Permalinks screen to copy the exact rules WordPress provides.
- Open the root directory through SFTP, FTP, or the host file manager and edit the file as plain text.
- Paste the generated block between the WordPress markers, retaining legitimate custom directives outside them.
- Save, reload the Permalinks screen, and confirm that the warning is gone or that the host has documented why it remains.
- Ask the host or server administrator to review ownership and permissions rather than applying broad, insecure permissions yourself.
Permission values vary by hosting account and server model. Giving every user write access can expose the site to unauthorized configuration changes, so coordinate any change with the person who administers the server. Ownership is as important as the numeric mode: a file can appear writable while still being owned by a different system account.
Find a missing or invisible .htaccess file
Enable hidden-file display
Because the filename begins with a dot, enable “show hidden files” or an equivalent setting in the FTP client or file manager. Refresh the directory after changing that option. Check both the WordPress directory and the hosting account’s document-root setting; the site may be served from a different folder than the one first opened.

A site running nginx or IIS may have no .htaccess at all. Nginx uses its server configuration, and IIS uses its own rewrite configuration. In either case, ask the host to verify the equivalent front-controller rules instead of creating an Apache file that the active server ignores.
Do not create an empty replacement blindly
If Apache is confirmed and the site uses pretty permalinks, create the file by saving the rules generated on the Permalinks screen. An empty file does not provide routing and can make troubleshooting harder by hiding whether the server reads the directory.

Correct rules after moving WordPress into a subdirectory
When WordPress is installed at a path such as example.com/blog/, its rewrite base and front-controller target must use that path. The root-install block with RewriteBase / may send requests to the wrong location.
- Confirm the WordPress Address and Site Address values under Settings > General, or use the documented recovery method if the dashboard is unavailable.
- Open the
.htaccesslocated with that subdirectory’s WordPress files. - Visit Settings > Permalinks after the move and save the existing structure so WordPress prints rules for the current path.
- Test URLs both inside the subdirectory and, if applicable, at the domain root where a separate application may still run.
Directory moves can also leave redirects, cached paths, or hard-coded links referring to the old location. Treat those as separate migration issues after the basic rewrite test succeeds.
Inspect plugin rules and server logs when regeneration is not enough
A clean WordPress block does not guarantee that the whole file is valid. Redirect managers, caching tools, authentication controls, and security plugins may add directives above or below the generated section. One unsupported directive can produce a 500 even though the WordPress block is correct.
- Compare the backup with the regenerated file and identify additions made immediately before the failure.
- Restore custom directives one logical group at a time, testing the site after each save.
- Ask the host for the Apache error-log line generated at the exact failure time. Messages about an invalid command, a disallowed override, or a missing module identify different fixes.
- For PHP-level errors that persist with the file renamed, use the host’s PHP log and WordPress recovery tools rather than continuing to edit Apache rules.
Never suppress an error by deleting an unknown directive without recording it. Some rules enforce access controls or redirects that the site owner still needs; preserve them in the backup until their purpose is understood.
Choose the repair path for your symptom and access

Verify the repair without creating a new outage
Use a consistent test set after every change. Check the front page, one published post, one page, an archive or category, the login URL, and a static asset such as an image or stylesheet. Test from a private browser session and, where available, from a second network so a proxy cache does not hide the result.
- A successful front page with failing posts usually indicates rewrite or permalink configuration, not a general PHP outage.
- A 500 that appears on every URL after restoring custom rules points to a directive or server-policy problem in the file.
- A 404 only for one path suggests a conflicting physical file, redirect, or application route rather than a missing global rewrite module.
- After confirming the fix, remove the temporary filename only when you are certain it is no longer needed, and retain the backup according to your normal change-control policy.
When to contact your hosting provider
Escalate instead of repeatedly editing the file when you cannot determine the server type, lack file access, the host forbids .htaccess overrides, mod_rewrite is disabled, or the 500 continues with the file renamed. Managed WordPress environments often maintain Apache or proxy configuration outside the account. Provide support with the exact URL, the time and timezone of the failure, the last change made, the result of the rename test, and the relevant log message. That information lets the provider distinguish a bad directive from a server-level restriction without requiring destructive trial and error.
